Beyond online and offline activism: #SaveSheikhJarrah and contemporary resistance in Palestine

ABSTRACT This article focuses on the interconnections between online and offline activism in Palestine, with a detailed analysis of the case of Sheikh Jarrah (east Jerusalem). We examine current strategies of Palestinian digital resistance that have highlighted the relevance of interlinking struggles both at the grassroots level and on the internet. Within the settler colonial framework, the hashtag #SaveSheikhJarrah stands as one of the most emblematic contemporary struggles against the Israeli military occupation, particularly against the ongoing evictions taking place in areas such as Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. In recent years, this hashtag has drawn unprecedented global attention to the Palestinian cause. This article is based on extensive digital ethnography and semi-structured interviews with young Palestinian activists conducted from 2021 to 2023. Through an exploration of activists’ narratives surrounding the #SaveSheikhJarrah movement, we critically examine the interplay of diverse forms of resistance in the age of social media. Our lens of analysis links grassroots and online struggles, offering a fresh perspective on digital activism in the current discourse on culture and communication within Palestinian studies.

Antibiotic utilization at an orthopedic inpatient department in a large governmental hospital in the north of the West Bank, Palestine; a retrospective observational study

BackgroundStudies evaluating the patterns of antibiotic consumption are becoming increasingly necessary as a result of the increased use of antibiotics and development of antibiotic resistance globally. This study aimed to evaluate the use of antibiotics in in terms of both quantity and quality at the largest surgical hospital in the north of the West Bank, Palestine.MethodsAn observational retrospective study with a total population sampling method was conducted to collect data from the inpatients of the orthopedic departments of a large governmental hospital in the northern West Bank, Palestine. The data were collected from patients’ files and evaluated using the anatomical therapeutic chemical and defined daily dose (ATC/DDD) methodology, and the drug utilization 90% (DU90%) index. The ATC/DDD methodology, designed by the World Health Organization (WHO), as a well-trusted and standardized tool that allows measuring and comparing antibiotic utilization across different contexts. Antibiotic prescriptions were classified using the World Health Organization Access, Watch and Reserve classification (WHO AWaRe).ResultsOf the 896 patients who were admitted to the hospital in the year 2020 and included in the study, 61.9% were males, and 38.1% were females. The percentage of patients who received antibiotics was 97.0%, and the overall antibiotic usage was 107.91 DDD/100 bed days. The most commonly prescribed antibiotic was cefazolin (50.30 DDD/100 bed days), followed by gentamicin (24.15 DDD/100 bed days) and ceftriaxone (17.35 DDD/100 bed days). The DU90% segment comprised four different agents. Classification of antibiotics according to the WHO AWaRe policy revealed that 75.9% of antibiotics were prescribed from the access list.ConclusionThis study comes as part of the efforts exerted to combat the growing problem of antibiotic resistance in Palestine. Our results showed that the consumption of antibacterial agents in the orthopedic unit at a large governmental hospital in Palestine was relatively high. The results of this study provide valuable insights for the decision-makers to create policies aimed at regulating antibiotic prescriptions. This study also aims to provide a look into the antibiotic prescription patterns, offering a clearer understanding of the current situation of antibiotic consumption in Palestine. It also emphasizes the need for antibiotic stewardship and surveillance programs.

The Materiality of Power and Bodily Matter(ing): Embodied Resistance in Palestine

To resist the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank, Palestinian prisoners are smuggling sperm samples out of Israeli prisons to enable their wives to undergo fertility treatment. Bodies and bodily matter figure as central actors in this practice of resistance. In this article, I draw from fieldwork I conducted with Palestinian women and medical staff in the occupied West Bank to examine the tension between carcerality and matter(ing). I argue that bodies and bodily matter are constitutive of the relationship between oppression and resistance. I analyze how Israeli military authorities assign evidentiary status to Palestinian bodies and illustrate how Palestinian families challenge the Israeli carceral system through new modes of embodied resistance. This article demonstrates how intersecting forms of oppression shape and are being shaped by bodies and their materiality. It also suggests that theorizing the materiality of power from Palestine offers new ways of understanding the political work that bodies do.

Militant Kites and Balloons: Anti-Colonial Resistance in Palestine's Great March of Return

This paper examines the Palestinian use of incendiary kites and balloons that emerged during Gaza's Great March of Return. Kites and balloons are rarely thought of as unstoppable weapons in contemporary theatres of war and resistance. Yet, for an extended period the Israeli military was unable to halt these aerial explosives from burning large quantities of agricultural fields and natural forests surrounding the Gaza Strip. The article critiques the security literature that discusses this new method of Palestinian resistance as another instance of terrorism. Instead, by drawing on Palestinian and Fanonian theorisations of violence in anti-colonial movements, I attempt to make the kites and balloons legible as a form of indigenous resistance to settler colonialism that can be an internally mobilising tool for Palestinians. The paper argues that the low-tech aerial explosives were mobilised as a response to high-tech militarism and long-standing settler colonial processes still shaping dynamics on the ground. These innovative forms of resistance momentarily broke the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and in burning trees planted to cover destroyed Palestinian villages open up questions surrounding the struggle over land in Israel/Palestine. The paper concludes by delineating how despite some immediate breakthroughs, it remains questionable whether these militant kites and balloons are long-term politically viable techniques of resistance.

Religious symbolism and politics: hijab and resistance in Palestine

ABSTRACT The covering of Muslim women has become a topic of contention on a global level. Relying on in-depth interviews in the Palestinian territories, our study illustrates the motivation to wear hijab under a colonial context and compares the justifications women give for wearing the hijab under two different types of political subjugation. Palestinian Muslim women in both the West Bank and East Jerusalem, frequently provided political justification for wearing the hijab. In the West Bank, where interactions with the occupier are limited to tense encounters with soldiers, they use the hijab as a defiant symbol against the Israeli occupation. In East Jerusalem, Palestinian women use the hijab as a visible representation of their identity and resilience, but at the same time they are more cautious and consider the way the hijab might be viewed by Jewish-Israeli civilians, whom they encounter on a daily basis.

Ramallah ravers and Haifa hipsters: gender, class, and nation in Palestinian popular culture

ABSTRACT Palestinian popular music is usually researched through two fram eworks: as folkloric identity or resistance to Israeli occupation. This paper stretches beyond these theoretical straitjackets. Based on two-years of qualitative fieldwork in Ramallah and Haifa, it explores how DJs and partygoers negotiate ‘everyday’ power through popular culture. It argues that dancefloors create semi-public spaces where young adults rehearse unconventional identities. Dress and dance assert femininities, masculinities, and queer subjectivities centred on pleasure, joy, and fun. Audience spaces are important sites of identity formation and negotiation. However, since such subjectivities are forged through consumption, youth require money (for clothes, tickets, time) to participate. Undoing gender and sexuality codes therefore relies on class-based hierarchies. Tracing identity embodiments on dancefloors reveal neither dissent nor acquiescence to hegemonic controls. Rather, as class structures cement, gender and sexuality modes shift (which instantiates novel controls). While scholarship tends to link music to resistance in Palestine, gender performances on dancefloors yield nuanced insights into power, play, and social (re)imagination. This, I argue, underscores the pressing need to approach popular culture in MENA and elsewhere beyond the now overdetermined resistance/compliance binary.

The Palestinian Resistance: Nonviolent Praxis in a Gramscian Paradigm

This article analyses the praxis of nonviolent resistance in Palestine through the lens of Gramsci. First, it begins with a historical inquiry into the major phenomena of the Palestinian resistance tradition. Its nonviolent expressions are highlighted in order to prove their continuity as well as their effectiveness, focusing on three uprisings of the national movement where this form of resistance was deployed: the Arab revolt, the First Intifada, and the Al Aqsa Intifada. Then, it presents the framework of the theoretical tradition of nonviolent struggle in order to interpret Palestinian popular resistance actions and strategies. Finally, these forms of resistance are embedded, and subsumed, in a Gramscian alternative hegemonic paradigm, so as to enhance the discussion around an organic nonviolent strategy of political resistance.

Neoliberal Developments, National Consciousness, and Political Economies of Resistance in Palestine

This essay explores the concept of political economies of resistance in Palestine as an alternative to the anticolonial imaginary articulated by nationalist visions, and the potential for liberation offered by local actors who articulate these political economies of resistance. It considers Frantz Fanon’s vision of national consciousness, its relevance to Palestinian resistance in the context of settler colonialism, and its aid in the articulation of political economies of resistance as a way to imagine otherwise in global politics. The impact of the Oslo peace process is discussed as a signalling of the end of a sort of Palestinian anticolonial utopia, with particular attention to the Palestinian nationalism embodied by leadership such as the Palestinian Authority, and its weddedness to liberal notions of economics and politics. It then considers contemporary Palestinian claims of politics and economies of resistance that are both local and transnational in their articulation, arguing that nationalist commitments to anticolonial utopias foreclose, not only the ability to imagine otherwise in global politics, but also obscure the otherwise already interrupting the histories of colonial modernity.
