A nonintrusive load identification method for residential applications based on quadratic programming

The decomposition of household power consumption is highly desired for scheduling household appliances and reducing home energy consumption. This paper presents a novel nonintrusive load identification method based on quadratic programming. Extensive simulation and laboratory tests have demonstrated that the proposed technique can provide adequate load identification accuracy for residential energy monitoring such that it is suitable for nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) systems in residential and commercial buildings.

Developments of the in-home display systems for residential energy monitoring

In order to efficiently reduce the amount of electricity usage in residential areas, the demand response (DR) of consumers is of importance. The in-home display (IHD) system provides energy monitoring information for the consumer DR. Considering the building structures and the existing automatic meter systems, several types of IHD systems have recently been developed based on the 2.4 GHz ZigBee radio, the power line communication technique, and the sub 1-GHz narrow-bandwidth radios. In this paper, five cases of IHD system developments and implementations are introduced and their technologies including network architectures compared <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1</sup> .

Residential Energy Performance Metrics

Techniques for residential energy monitoring are an emerging field that is currently drawing significant attention. This paper is a description of the current efforts to monitor and compare the performance of three solar powered homes built at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The homes are outfitted with an array of sensors and a data logger system to measure and record electricity production, system energy use, internal home temperature and humidity, hot water production, and exterior ambient conditions the houses are experiencing. Data is being collected to measure the performance of the houses, compare to energy modeling programs, design and develop cost effective sensor systems for energy monitoring, and produce a cost effective home control system.

Residential energy monitoring and computerized surveillance via utility power flows

The author notes that all novel technologies have the potential to affect society in a complex manner, with both beneficial and detrimental consequences. He considers an illustrative case study: a nonintrusive appliance load monitoring technique that can provide vital information to help avoid future energy crises, but can also be used for surveillance purposes. He notes that there appears to be a significant potential for the technology to be abused. The danger that the technology might eventually lead to an erosion of civil liberties and privacy rights leaves its developers in an ethical quandary.
