The 2023 American Burn Association Research and Advocacy Summit: Our Roadmap.

Research is one of the American Burn Association's (ABA) strategic priorities. Advocacy is required not only to promote burn research, but also, the ABA's other strategic priorities (Prevention, Quality, and Education). The ABA convened a two-day Research and Advocacy (R&A) Summit in September 2023, to develop a roadmap for the organization's research and advocacy efforts. The in-person summit identified fourteen key R&A initiatives. A multidisciplinary workgroup then developed strategies to achieve each initiative. The initiatives and strategies were then approved by the ABA's Board of Trustees as our organization's roadmap for research and advocacy. The next task will be to implement the initiatives. This will require not only oversight from the ABA's Board of Trustees, but also, effort from and collaboration between several of the ABA's committees and panels, including the Burn Science Advisory panel (BSAP), the Research Committee, the Prevention Committee, The Governmental Affairs Committee, The Organization and Delivery of Burn care Committee, the Quality and Burn Registry Committee, the ad hoc Coding Committee, and the ABA's Central Office.

Let's Talk About Grief: Building a Theoretical Framework for Grief Counseling with Systematic Literature Review

Grief is a universal life experience characterized by the loss of an affective bond, leading to Normal Grief responses. Grief Counseling is a specialized therapeutic intervention aimed at facilitating adaptation to the new reality and preventing complications from prolonged grief. A systematic literature review was conducted to inform the development of a curricular program for training in Grief Counseling in the Portuguese context. From Research Summit 2022.

Abstract Introduction

Abstract The 6th Kidney Cancer Research Summit (KCRS) took place on July 11th & 12th, 2024 as a hybrid event both in Boston, Massachusetts at the InterContinental Boston, and virtually via Zoom webinar. The conference format consists of oral presentations in an intimate setting that enables dynamic discussion among attendees. The meeting began with a keynote titled “How the Air We Breathe Can Impact Cancer,” showing the biological processes underlying how airborne microparticles drive inflammatory processes that fuel tumorigenesis. Sessions included Exploring Novel Drug Targets for RCC, Novel Imaging and Biomarkers to Guide RCC Patient Management, State of the Science, Trials in Progress, Clinical and Scientific Updates in Kidney Cancer, Immunotherapy Advances and Research, Oral Abstracts, and Rapid Abstracts. The KCRS was inaugurated in 2019 to congregate the community of researchers conducting projects involving kidney cancer with clinicians, industry partners, and patient advocates in order to foster new collaborations and generate constructive feedback. KCRS is funded through sponsors, partnerships, and grassroots supporters organized by KidneyCAN, a nationwide network of kidney cancer patients, caregivers, and family members who are committed to accelerating cures for kidney cancer. Basic through translational and clinical research are included, and the program is centered on projects funded through the Department of Defense’s Kidney Cancer Research Program awards. The goal is to give current and future projects the best chance to succeed and ensure the orientation of goals towards raising the standard of care and improving patient outcomes across all histological subtypes and stages of this disease. This supplement contains a complete list of scheduled abstract presentations that were accepted as of June 17th, 2024. Reducing the global burden of cerebral venous thrombosis: An international research agenda.

Due to the rarity of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), performing high-quality scientific research in this field is challenging. Providing answers to unresolved research questions will improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and ultimately translate to a better outcome of patients with CVT. We present an international research agenda, in which the most important research questions in the field of CVT are prioritized. This research agenda has three distinct goals: (1) to provide inspiration and focus to research on CVT for the coming years, (2) to reinforce international collaboration, and (3) to facilitate the acquisition of research funding. This international research agenda is the result of a research summit organized by the International Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Consortium in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in June 2023. The summit brought together 45 participants from 15 countries including clinical researchers from various disciplines, patients who previously suffered from CVT, and delegates from industry and non-profit funding organizations. The research agenda is categorized into six pre-specified themes: (1) epidemiology and clinical features, (2) life after CVT, (3) neuroimaging and diagnosis, (4) pathophysiology, (5) medical treatment, and (6) endovascular treatment. For each theme, we present two to four research questions, followed by a brief substantiation per question. The research questions were prioritized by the participants of the summit through consensus discussion. This international research agenda provides an overview of the most burning research questions on CVT. Answering these questions will advance our understanding and management of CVT, which will ultimately lead to improved outcomes for CVT patients worldwide.

Healthcare Simulation Training Guidelines and Literature Reviews From the Third Society for Simulation in Healthcare Research Summit.

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare held its third research summit in January 2023 with the aim of establishing evidence-based guidelines for healthcare simulation training. A panel of researchers, clinicians, and subject-matter experts conducted reviews of the literature addressing 12 key topics and followed a formal process to generate 16 guidelines for simulation-based training in healthcare. Eleven peer-reviewed literature reviews accompany these guidelines. Over the last 12 years, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare research summits have evolved with a consistent aim to advance simulation research, culminating in the formal set of guidelines published in this special issue.

The 5th Kidney Cancer Research Summit: Research Accelerating Cures for Renal Cell Carcinoma in 2023.

The 5th Kidney Cancer Research Summit was a hybrid event hosted in Boston, MA in July 2023. As in previous editions, the conference attracted a wide representation of global thought leaders in kidney cancer spanning all stages of clinical and laboratory research. Sessions covered tumor metabolism, novel immune pathways, advances in clinical trials and immunotherapy, and progress toward biomarkers. The abstract presentations were published as a supplement in The Oncologist (https://academic.oup.com/oncolo/issue/28/Supplement_1). Aiming to be more concise than comprehensive, this commentary summarizes the most important emerging areas of kidney cancer research discussed and debated among the stakeholders at the conference, with relevant updates that have occurred since.

IX International Conference on Forest Fire Research and 17th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit: special issue introduction (Part 4)

The 9th International Conference on Forest Fire Research, organised by the Forest Fire Research Center of the Association for Developmental of Industrial Aerodynamics every 4 years since 1990, was held in November 2022 in Coimbra, Portugal. The conference was held in conjunction with the 17th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit, sponsored by the International Association of Wildland Fire. The number and quality of the submissions for this joint event was very high, and the authors were encouraged to submit a full paper to a special issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire (IJWF). Given the large number of submissions, the Journal decided to publish the special issue in four parts. Part 1 was published in January 2023, with eight papers, Part 2 in March 2023, with 10 papers and Part 3 in June 2023 with 15 papers. This fourth part presents 10 original papers, in three areas: Decision Support Systems and Tools (3), Risk Assessment & Reduction (3) and the Wildland Urban Interface (4). All the papers in this special issue are published Open Access.

Sessions included Modulating the Tumor Microenvironment, Biology of Non-Clear Cell Renal Cancer Subtypes, Clinical Trials in Progress, Breaking Barriers to Trial Enrollment, Clinical and Scientific Updates, Immunotherapy Advances and Research, Oral Abstracts, and Rapid Abstracts. Additionally, there was also a symposium on the current state of development of kidney cancer biomarkers, one of the greatest unmet needs for a malignancy with multiple approved drugs and combinations. KCRS was inaugurated in 2019 to congregate the community of researchers conducting projects involving kidney cancer with clinicians, industry partners, and patient advocates in order to foster new collaborations and generate constructive feedback. KCRS is funded through sponsors, partnerships, and grassroots supporters organized by KidneyCAN, a nationwide network of individuals with kidney cancer, caregivers, and family members who are committed to accelerating cures for kidney cancer. IX International Conference on Forest Fire Research and 17th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit: introduction to special issue (Part 2)

The ninth International Conference on Forest Fire Research, together with the 17th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit was held in November 2022. This joint conference brought together several hundred presentations in the field of wildfire research. This special issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire includes several papers describing work presented at the conference. Due to the large number and variety of papers submitted, the special issue is being published in several parts. Part 1 of the special issue was published, in January 2023, with a set of eight papers. This Foreword to Part 2 of the special issue introduces 10 new papers on various topics that include: modelling of ignition probability, fire behaviour modelling, wildfire hazard mapping, fire management policies, imagery and mapping, and wildland–urban interface. All papers in the special issue are published Open Access.

Building the foundation for a community-generated national research blueprint for inherited bleeding disorders: facilitating research through infrastructure, workforce, resources and funding

ABSTRACT Background The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) conducted extensive, inclusive community consultations to guide prioritization of research in coming decades in alignment with its mission to find cures and address and prevent complications enabling people and families with blood disorders to thrive. Research Design and Methods With the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, NHF recruited multidisciplinary expert working groups (WG) to distill the community-identified priorities into concrete research questions and score their feasibility, impact, and risk. WG6 was charged with identifying the infrastructure, workforce development, and funding and resources to facilitate the prioritized research. Community input on conclusions was gathered at the NHF State of the Science Research Summit. Results WG6 detailed a minimal research capacity infrastructure threshold, and opportunities to enable its attainment, for bleeding disorders centers to participate in prospective, multicenter national registries. They identified challenges and opportunities to recruit, retain, and train the diverse multidisciplinary care and research workforce required into the future. Innovative collaborative approaches to trial design, resource networking, and funding to surmount obstacles facing research in rare disorders were elucidated. Conclusions The innovations in infrastructure, workforce development, and resources and funding proposed herein may contribute to facilitating a National Research Blueprint for Inherited Bleeding Disorders.

The National Hemophilia Foundation State of the Science Research Summit initiative: executive summary

ABSTRACT Introduction The National Hemophilia Foundation State of the Science Research Summit initiative sought to unify research efforts in the US inherited bleeding disorders (BDs) community around key topics of importance to people living with inherited BDs, the lived experience experts. Areas covered This community-led and -informed project focused on six broad areas – hemophilia A or B; von Willebrand Disease (VWD), platelet dysfunctions and other mucocutaneous inherited BDs; ultra-rare inherited BDs; the unique challenges of people with the potential to menstruate with inherited BDs; diversity, equity and inclusion, health services research, and implementation science; and facilitating research in the inherited BD community through designing an optimizied research infrastructure, enabling resources and funding, and furthering workforce capabilities required to execute the research priorities. Expert opinion The work summarized here, and in the accompanying supplement manuscripts , has implications not only for the US population but for people globally who have inherited BDs. The information is equally relevant to people living with hemophilia, VWD, the spectrum of inherited platelet disorders, ultra-rare factor deficiencies, and all other inherited BDs as it is to the health care providers and researchers focused on the care and treatment of inherited BDs in the US and globally.

Building the foundation for a community-generated national research blueprint for inherited bleeding disorders: research priorities to transform the care of people with hemophilia

ABSTRACT Background Decades of research have transformed hemophilia from severely limiting children’s lives to a manageable disorder compatible with a full, active life, for many in high-income countries. The direction of future research will determine whether exciting developments truly advance health equity for all people with hemophilia (PWH). National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network conducted extensive inclusive all-stakeholder consultations to identify the priorities of people with inherited bleeding disorders and those who care for them. Research design and methods Working group (WG) 1 of the NHF State of the Science Research Summit distilled the community-identified priorities for hemophilia A and B into concrete research questions and scored their feasibility, impact, and risk. Results WG1 defined 63 top priority research questions concerning arthropathy/pain/bone health, inhibitors, diagnostics, gene therapy, the pediatric to adult transition of care, disparities faced by the community, and cardiovascular disease. This research has the potential to empower PWH to thrive despite lifelong comorbidities and achieve new standards of wellbeing, including psychosocial. Conclusions Collaborative research and care delivery will be key to capitalizing on current and horizon treatments and harnessing technical advances to improve diagnostics and testing, to advance health equity for all PWH.

Building the foundation for a community-generated national research blueprint for inherited bleeding disorders: research to advance the health of people with inherited bleeding disorders with the potential to menstruate

ABSTRACT Background People who have or had the potential to menstruate (PPM) with inherited bleeding disorders (BD) face particular challenges receiving appropriate diagnosis and care and participating in research. As part of an initiative to create a National Research Blueprint for future decades of research, the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network conducted extensive all-stakeholder consultations to identify the priorities of PPM with inherited BDs and those who care for them. Research design and methods Working group (WG) 4 of the NHF State of the Science Research Summit distilled community-identified priorities for PPM with inherited BDs into concrete research questions and scored their feasibility, impact, and risk. Results WG4 identified important gaps in the foundational knowledge upon which to base optimal diagnosis and care for PPM with inherited BDs. They defined 44 top-priority research questions concerning lifespan sex biology, pregnancy and the post-partum context, uterine physiology and bleeding, bone and joint health, health care delivery, and patient-reported outcomes and quality-of-life. Conclusions The needs of PPM will best be advanced with research designed across the spectrum of sex and gender biology, with methodologies and outcome measures tailored to this population, involving them throughout.
