What is ‘high-risk research’? Comparing the social sciences and humanities and the natural sciences

Abstract Although high-risk research is a key concern for research policy and science studies, there is little knowledge about what funding agencies or researchers mean by risks. This paper draws on 80 grant proposals from the social sciences and humanities (SSH) and the natural sciences (NSC) that have been submitted to the Reinhart Koselleck funding program of the German Research Foundation. The qualitative analysis shows both similarities and differences in how applicants in the two fields claim risks: in both fields, the most prominent notions refer to results and methodologies. While results at risk are interpreted similarly, methodological risks differ between the two fields. The analysis also reveals a greater variety of different risks in the SSH compared to the NSC. The paper suggests that research policy and science studies should avoid treating “riskiness” as a given and consider different notions of risk across a disciplinary spectrum that includes the SSH.

Assessing corporate climate action: Corporate climate policies and company-level emission reductions

Private investment decisions are expected to play a decisive role in redirecting capital flows in line with the Paris Agreement. The financial sector and policymakers have emphasized the role of corporate climate action and climate-related disclosure, including backward-looking emissions figures and forward-looking information on corporate climate policies to enable investors to reallocate capital to firms with promising emission reduction pathways. However, there is at best inconclusive evidence on the relationship between corporate climate policies and subsequent company-level emission reductions. Previous research was limited by small sample sizes and short observation periods, impeding the analysis of time-lagged effects or the inclusion of company-level fixed effects. To overcome these shortcomings, we draw on a new dataset with 17,198 observations from 1,749 companies that disclosed their corporate climate policies between 2010 and 2022. While our results show only a weak link between individual policies and company-level emissions, we find some evidence for an improved climate performance for absolute emissions for companies that introduced a comprehensive corporate climate policy mix. This is in line with public policy research that has found comprehensiveness to be an important dimension for public policy mixes and emphasizes the role of a mix of corporate climate policies rather than relying on individual measures.

Addressing barriers to post-graduate research training in low resource settings: an innovative approach in an institution of higher learning in Kenya

BackgroundNumerous barriers hinder health research training in Post-Graduate Medical Education Programs, especially in developing countries. Research training is pivotal for medical residency, providing essential knowledge and skills for dissertation completion, fostering evidence-based medical practice, and nurturing future independent clinical researchers. A holistic approach to research education is imperative to surmount these barriers. We describe here a dissertation-centric research curriculum, delivered longitudinally, an innovative strategy undertaken by Aga Khan University's Medical College in East Africa (AKU-MCEA) to deliver postgraduate research.MethodsA review of AKU-MCEA post-graduate research methods curriculum was conducted based on implementing Departments' experience, institutional policies, and residency program output.Program implementationThe Master of Medicine program requires a well-executed dissertation for graduation. Residents undergo structured research training across four modules, with interactive sessions and workshops supporting their research milestones. Protected time allows residents to develop and report on their dissertation work. Faculty receive specialized training in dissertation supervision to ensure residents benefit from expert guidance in producing high-quality research.OutcomesThis approach achieves a dissertation completion and graduation rate of 98–100%. Notably, 68.5% (n = 126) of those who graduated in 2013–2023 have published two or more papers (i.e., range 2–36) in their current portfolio, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing research endeavors even after graduation. Residents' research covers diverse themes and is disseminated through departmental presentations, university-wide Faculty Academic Rounds, peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and the Annual Early Career Researchers symposium.Lessons learntA comprehensive approach featuring a structured research curriculum, longitudinal delivery with predetermined milestones, dedicated supervision, financial and resource support, protected research time, ongoing faculty development in dissertation supervision, and clear institutional research policies accelerates dissertation completion and enhances effective research dissemination.

Researcher identities and values in the impact agenda: the case of artificial intelligence academics

AbstractA major shift in the research sector has been the increased expectation from policymakers and funders that academic research should yield some socioeconomic benefits or ‘impacts’ rather than merely new knowledge. In this paper, we explore the role that impact has in academics’ motivations and values and how impact is being integrated into academics’ core functions of research and education. We do this through in-depth interviews (n = 60) with scientists who work on the development or application of artificial intelligence (AI), broadly defined. This AI’s focus situates our participants within a strategically important, high-priority area of research for all three national contexts included in our study—Australia, the UK and the USA. Our findings reveal that the impact mission has become central to understanding the motivations and values of academics, but unevenly. We identify divergence between those who work on AI from a foundational computer science perspective and those who develop and apply AI within other scientific domains. The two groups have different understandings of key notions such as ‘impact’ and ‘applied research’, as well as different ways of integrating the impact agenda into their research and education activities. The study highlights the importance of flexible approaches to research policy and governance that are based on a deeper understanding of what motivates researchers, and that take into account academics’ educational role. Greater holistic understanding of how academic identities and practices are accommodating the impact agenda is essential to maximise synergy across activities and avoid unintended consequences.

Health Experiences of LGBTQ+ People Living With Dementia and Their Care Partners: A Scoping Review of Research and Policy

Objectives This scoping review aimed to synthesize research on the health experiences of LGBTQ+ people living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers, and the impact of health policies on this population. Methods Six databases were searched for research studies and policy literature. Titles, abstracts, and full texts were reviewed by a three-member team. Data was extracted and thematically analyzed. Feedback from 7 LGBTQ+ adults was collected through a community consultation session. Results A total of 9257 unique research and 945 policy citations were identified, of which 60 research and 19 policy papers were reviewed. Nine research studies and ten policy papers met eligibility criteria. Themes emerged through the analysis of research findings, the community listening session, and policy findings. Discussion Future work needs to disentangle the impact of policies on the health experiences of this population. Dementia-specific and LGBTQ+ inclusive services and policies are needed to address growing health disparities.

Exploring Edible Insects: From Sustainable Nutrition to Pasta and Noodle Applications—A Critical Review

Edible insects provide an alternative source of high-quality proteins, essential lipids, minerals, and vitamins. However, they lack the acceptability and consumption rates of more common staple foods. In contrast, pasta and noodles are globally appreciated foods that are consumed across various cultures. These products contribute greatly to the population’s energy intake but generally lack essential nutrients. Recently, edible insects have gained in popularity due to their numerous benefits, both environmental and nutritional. Current research indicates that incorporating edible insect ingredients into pasta and noodle formulations enhances their nutritional quality by increasing protein and fiber content and reducing carbohydrates. However, adding new ingredients to enrich common foods often carries technological and sensory challenges, such as changes in processing parameters, texture, flavor, and appearance. Technology assessment, scientific research, information campaigns, and public policies can help overcome these issues. This review aims to summarize the benefits of entomophagy (the consumption of insects as food) for sustainability, nutrition, and health; highlight the potential of pasta and noodles as carriers of nutritious and bioactive ingredients, including insects; and critically address the advancements in insect-enriched pasta and noodle technology, identifying current challenges, knowledge gaps, and opportunities.

A Call for Afrocentric Decolonial Endogenous Marketing and Public Policy Research and Practice: Toward Sustainable Peace and Well-Being in African Societies

Africa experiences one-third of all conflicts globally, resulting in the diminishment of human, social, and economic well-being; high levels of insecurity; poverty; and disrupted marketing systems. Drawing on the experiences of African countries, the article illuminates the ways in which the slave trade and, later, the colonization of the African continent fomented the social and economic convulsions that continue to erupt into continuing cycles of social conflict. Today these are manifested in the neocolonial influence of public policy on the continent by international organizations, funding bodies, and local and international institutions that control the public policy discourse and resources. The authors argue that if marketing systems are to enhance well-being and reduce social conflict, marketing policy makers need to contest failed “external to Africa” policy frameworks and look to endogenous policies better suited to contemporary African challenges. A case study of Rwanda illuminates how endogenous, “home-grown” decolonial and Afrocentric policy can create enduring peace and improve marketing systems and well-being. The authors call for research at the nexus of public policy and African marketing systems that adopts decolonized, endogenous, and Afrocentric perspectives to address this lacuna in marketing and public policy research and practice.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Relationship Between GDP and the Global Hunger Index Over the Last 20 Years

This study examines the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and the Global Hunger Index (GHI) over the past two decades. By analyzing data from various countries across different income levels, the research explores how economic growth intersects with hunger dynamics. The study utilizes reputable sources, including reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and the World Bank. The findings highlight that while GDP per capita is an important factor in reducing hunger, other elements such as income inequality, education, health expenditure, agricultural productivity, and governance significantly influence hunger outcomes. The research underscores the necessity for holistic approaches that integrate economic growth with social equity and effective policy interventions to eradicate hunger globally.

Moral Injury in Correctional Health Care.

Due to the complex nature of correctional facilities, correctional health care professionals (CHPs) are at high risk of experiencing the harms of helping such as burnout, vicarious trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although traditionally applied to military populations, the construct of moral injury has gained increasing application to health care and bears relevance to correctional health care. This qualitative study examines the prevalence of moral injury among CHPs while considering the moral dilemmas and ethical challenges of delivering care in a carceral environment. Employing an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of CHPs, selected through nonprobability, purposive sampling. Rigorous thematic analysis, guided by IPA principles, was used. The data revealed five key themes: moral injury is an occupational hazard for correctional health care workers; incidental versus cumulative moral injury; role of institutional betrayal; the intersectional relationship among moral injury, PTSD, and burnout; and the road to moral repair. These themes offer insights into the prevalence and effects of moral injury in correctional health care while offering solutions to navigating moral injury. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex ethical and psychological dynamics within correctional health care settings and explore implications for practice, policy, and future research.

Antecedent and Consequence of Innovation Output: Evidence from Thailand

The study aims to examine the impact of research and development (R&D) investment (the antecedent) on competitive advantage (the consequence) for the innovation output of private firms in Thailand. The population of this study includes all private Thai firms which have registered with the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council. Path analysis and factor confirmation, including correlation matrix, are used to test the mediator effect of innovation output on the relationship between R&D investment and firm performance competitive advantage. The research data are tested and analyzed by the structure equation model. The results reveal that R&D investment was not found to directly influence competitive advantage, while R&D investment indirectly affects competitive advantage through innovation output. The findings of this study demonstrate that innovative output plays a mediating role between R&D investment and competitive advantage. In addition, dynamic capability theory can be used to explain the influences of R&D investment and innovation output on competitive advantage for private firms in Thailand.

Impact of agricultural extension services on rice productivity and profitability in Bangladesh

Agricultural extension services play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agriculture, particularly in developing countries where many farmers are resource-poor. Enhancing farmers’ profitability and productivity is essential to meet the increasing demand of a growing population. This study aims to examine the impact of agricultural extension services on the profitability and productivity of rice farmers in Bangladesh. The analysis uses unbalanced panel data from the International Food Policy Research Institute’s Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey for 2015 and 2018. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to assess whether the differences between the participant and non-participant groups were statistically significant. Additionally, a probit regression model is used to identify the determinants of participation in agricultural extension services. The findings reveal that participation is positively influenced by access to subsidies, distance to market, occupation and livelihood vulnerability. The impact of agricultural extension services on farm productivity and profitability is assessed using difference-in-difference and random effect generalized least squares models. The results show that agricultural extension services significantly contribute to both farm profitability and productivity. This suggests that governments should intensify and monitor the delivery of agricultural extension services, particularly focusing on the timely provision of support resource-poor farmers.

Bridging Public Health Research and State-Level Policy: The Texas Research-to-Policy Collaboration Project.

Significant barriers to the implementation of evidence-based policy exist. Establishing an infrastructure and resources to support this process at the state level can accelerate the translation of research into practice. This study describes the adaptation and initial evaluation of the Texas Research-to-Policy Collaboration (TX RPC) Project, focusing on the adaptation process, legislative public health policy priorities, and baseline researcher policy knowledge and self-efficacy. The federal Research-to-Policy Collaboration (RPC) method was adapted to the Texas legislative process in 2020. Policymakers and public health researchers were recruited using direct outreach and referrals. Legislators or their aides were interviewed to determine health policy needs, which directed the development of legislator resources, webinars, and recruitment of additional public health researchers with specific expertise. Researchers were trained to facilitate communication with policymakers, and TX RPC Project staff facilitated legislator and researcher meetings to provide data and policy input. Baseline surveys were completed with legislators to assess the use of health researchers in policy. Surveys were also administered before training to researchers assessing self-efficacy, knowledge, and training needs. Qualitative data from the legislator interviews were analyzed using inductive and deductive approaches. Quantitative survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for scales and individual survey items. Legislative offices (n = 21) identified health care access, mental health, and health disparities as key health issues. Legislators reported that health data were important but did not actively involve researchers in legislation. Researchers (n = 73) reported that policy informed their work but had low engagement with legislators. Researcher training surveys indicated lower policy self-efficacy and knowledge and the need for additional training. Adaptation of the RPC model for state-level health policy is feasible but necessitates logistical changes based on the unique legislative body. Researchers need training and resources to engage with policymakers.

Differential flood insurance participation and housing market trajectories under future coastal flooding in the United States

Communities respond to flooding events based upon risk perceptions and available adaptive behaviors (e.g., emigrating, purchasing insurance, constructing levees). Across the United States, sea level rise, intensifying storm-surges, and extreme rainfall may alter human-flood dynamics. Here, we use calibrated Socio-Environmental models of contiguous US coastal census tracts and two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP245 and SSP585). We project that by 2100, total flood insurance claims will increase by +25% to +130% under low (SSP245) and high (SSP585) emissions scenarios, respectively. The increase in flood insurance claims will impact mainly socially vulnerable communities. Further, we project that active NFIP policies will increase from +30% under low emission scenario to +60% under high emission scenario. Our finding also suggests the growing debt of the National Flood Insurance Program under higher emissions. Raising the water elevation threshold for coastal flooding by +1 meter via levees may reduce future surge-related losses by 95% and 40% under low and high emission scenarios and stabilize housing markets. Our future projections of flood insurance claims, policy coverage, and the impact of water elevation serve as credible hypotheses for the evolution of human flood dynamics under climate change. They can inform national flood policy and future research.

Minority stress and psychological well-being in queer populations

Queer individuals experience unique stressors related to their minority status, negatively impacting their mental health. One factor contributing to these disparities is exposure to minority stress, which involves social stressors related to minority status. Previous research has focused on the negative impacts of minority stress, with less attention to its impact on positive psychological functioning. This study explored the relationship between minority stress and psychological well-being among 270 queer individuals in German-speaking countries. Participants completed an online survey assessing minority stress and psychological well-being. Analyses of Covariance indicated that proximal factors of minority stress—such as self-stigma, concealment, and expectations of rejection—had a particularly negative impact on psychological well-being, but no effects could be found for gender and sexual orientation. Additionally, gender identity but not sexual orientation had a significant effect on minority stress, with non-binary and other gender identities reporting higher minority stress compared to females. Thematic analysis revealed concerns about survey inclusivity, gender identity challenges, and intersectionality of minority identities. Our findings emphasize the significant impact of minority stress on the psychological well-being of queer individuals, particularly non-binary people and those with diverse gender identities, while demonstrating the need for inclusive research methodologies, tailored interventions, and policies addressing the diverse experiences within the queer community.

ARC Life Course Centre International Data for Policy Workshop

ObjectivesIdentify factors that support development of socially acceptable next generation linked data ecosystems that deliver higher standards in research, evaluation, and evidence-based policy. ApproachAustralian speakers showcased Australia’s current state of play in linked, longitudinal life course data. This was contrasted with examples of data settings in other countries, via international speakers. ResultsSeveral points of agreement emerged as areas for global improvement, such as: Developing best practice guidelines for inclusion of non-government organisation (NGO) service data into government funded, research accessible, safe-sharing, linked data systems Standardising user accreditation and credentialing that can be recognised across multiple data systems, to prevent duplication and aid efficiency Advocate for building evaluation funding into NGO service contracts Consider developing Community Data Labs/Data Explorers/Data Concierge Services to facilitate easy access and intuitive use of data by non-expert users (E.g. government, NGO, philanthropic, general public users, etc…) Encourage publication of measures of linkage quality by both custodians of data linkage systems and researchers Consider Indigenous Data Sovereignty, and sovereignty of other population groups, when collecting, linking, using, and reporting from administrative data about them. Conclusion The ARC Life Course Centre Data for Policy Portfolio members will determine how to prioritise our approach to each of these points and get a better understanding of how we could pursue them in partnership with key stakeholders domestically and internationally.

Exploring the Nexus of Electric Vehicles, Environmental Health and Sustainability: A Comprehensive Bibliometric Review

This study analysed 636 papers from the Scopus database using bibliometric and graphical techniques to trace the evolving research on sustainability, environmental health (EH), and electric vehicles (EVs). Research patterns, notable authors, most contributing nations, associations, leading journals, and the most widely referenced publications were all noted. Although the top journals for EV policy research are Sustainability and Journal of Cleaner Production, Sovacool Bk is acknowledged as the most active contributor. The top two contributions are the USA and China, underscoring their vital roles in the creation of EVs and creative policies. The primary contributor to the field research is Tsinghua University. With the maximum citations, the study by Egbue (2012) in Energy Policy suggests a significant long-term influence. The study uses Bradford's Law to confirm that important research is concentrated in specific publications and Lotka's Law to analyse author productivity. The results indicate that certain authors are quite prolific, which are in line with Bradford's Law but not Lotka's Law. The seven thematic clusters that emerged were (a) "Sustainable transportation and policy," (b) "Sustainable mobility and energy," (c) "Environmental Impact and Circular Economy," (d) "Electric Vehicles Adoption and Climate Change," (e) "Battery and Lithium-Ion Technology," (f) "Shared and Connected Mobility," and (g) "Smart Grid and Vehicle-to-Grid Integration." Overall, the study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary EV research as well as the need for infrastructure, regulatory, and technology improvements to support sustainable EV adoption. By employing keyword co-occurrence analysis, the study offers academics and policymakers valuable information, establishing the framework for resolving problems and promoting innovation in the EV ecosystem.

Evidence use in higher education decision-making and policy: a scoping review of empirical studies from 2010 to 2022

In this article, we review empirical studies on the use of evidence in higher education decision-making and policy from 2010 to 2022. In our scoping review, we identify 77 studies in English or German, of which 69 meet minimum quality standards. We map the current state of knowledge on the use of data and research evidence in higher education and research institutions, and higher education and research policy, using qualitative coding. The results depict a growing, US-dominated, research field characterised by a large variety of methodological approaches, influenced by heterogeneous sets of paradigms and shaped by professional publications. We compare studies on evidence use in higher education and research institutions, and higher education and research policy, and find conceptual and empirical differences regarding the studied dimensions of evidence use, the types of evidence taken into account, and factors influencing evidence use. Our review highlights the need for comparative organisational research on evidence use, further research on mechanisms and pathways of evidence uses and a closer linkage between concepts and empirical findings.

Drosophila melanogaster experimental model to test new antimicrobials: a methodological approach

Given the increasing concern about antimicrobial resistance among the microorganisms that cause infections in our society, there is an urgent need for new drug discovery. Currently, this process involves testing many low-quality compounds, resulting from the in vivo testing, on mammal models, which not only wastes time, resources, and money, but also raises ethical questions. In this review, we have discussed the potential of D. melanogaster as an intermediary experimental model in this drug discovery timeline. We have tackled the topic from a methodological perspective, providing recommendations regarding the range of drug concentrations to test based on the mechanism of action of each compound; how to treat D. melanogaster, how to monitor that treatment, and what parameters we should consider when designing a drug screening protocol to maximize the study’s benefits. We also discuss the necessary improvements needed to establish the D. melanogaster model of infection as a standard technique in the drug screening process. Overall, D. melanogaster has been demonstrated to be a manageable model for studying broad-spectrum infection treatment. It allows us to obtain valuable information in a cost-effective manner, which can improve the drug screening process and provide insights into our current major concern. This approach is also in line with the 3R policy in biomedical research, in particular on the replacement and reduce the use of vertebrates in preclinical development.

Policy-based evidence: the schools inspectorate in England, research and school mathematics policy

ABSTRACT Increasingly, debates about school mathematics curriculum and pedagogy refer to evidence. The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), the inspection service in England, published a series of research reviews, including one on mathematics. Using features of education review quality, we analyse Ofsted’s departure from scholarly norms, identifying a lack of transparency, weakness of research design and search strategy, and lack of rigour in the selection of evidence. Further, cited research is frequently misinterpreted and unwarranted causal claims made due to overgeneralisation and oversimplification. A specific example of this is the misappropriation of research on problem solving leading to recommendations conflicting with both the National Curriculum in England and the findings of other, more rigorous, research reviews. From this analysis, we argue that the mathematics review is an example of “policy-based evidence” and point to alternative ways that inspection evidence can complement mathematics education research to support evidence-informed policy and practice.
