Trends in Research on Representation in Chemistry Learning: A Systematic Review

Representation plays an important role in helping students understand chemistry learning. This is due to the many chemical concepts that require visualization. Representation is something that still needs to be studied. So this study aims to see the development of representation research in chemistry education. The articles used in this study are articles from 2018 to 2022. This Systematic Literature Review research used Publish or Perish software, then filtered and extracted data according to the criteria for the research objectives to create 30 relevant articles and combined using the Prisma Protocol. The results showed that research related to representation in chemistry learning is still frequently conducted in the last 5 years. This research often discusses related to cognitive ability, which is most associated with chemistry concepts and conceptual understanding. Students and teachers are commonly used samples in research. In addition, stated of matter is most widely used subject in chemistry research.

Trends in Chemistry Education Research on Student Transformation in the Philippines: A Meta-analytic Review

Creating innovative methodologies and interventions in chemistry education is essential to promote positive student transformation outcomes. Although chemistry educators are key in utilizing its potential in the classroom, very little is known about its efficacy in teaching and learning. This study aims to determine the current research trends in chemistry education. It examines the effect of chemistry education research findings included in the meta-analysis on using varied teaching methodologies on student transformation outcomes. A systematic review and meta-analysis of a pool of studies related to chemistry instruction in the Philippines and through on site or online browsing were conducted. Results show that the country's pedagogical trend in chemistry education centers mainly on cooperative and inquiry-based learning, which aligns with and supports the framework and goals of 21st-century teaching. Results suggested that chemistry teachers can consider employing one of the various pedagogies and methods that effectively improve students' cognitive and affective outcomes. Heterogeneity test warrants that significant differences exist between the grouped features. The effect size data are directly influenced by the significance of the test derived from each study. Studies with significant results tend to have a larger effect size and significantly affect the study variables.

Innovative strategies to strengthen teaching-researching skills in chemistry and biology education: a systematic literature review

The dynamic field of scientific education, particularly in chemistry and biology, demands the implementation of innovative teaching strategies, driving the need for continuous research to enhance skills in both educators and students. This systematic literature review (SLR) delves into the evolving landscape of chemistry and biology education research, shedding light on key trends, strategies, and skills. Employing the PRISMA methodology, we scrutinized 81 papers to assess the employment of resources, technologies, and methods conducive to effective learning and research. Searches were conducted in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases, with inclusion criteria spanning English and Spanish studies from the last five years. The analysis reveals a notable shift in recent years, emphasizing the diversification of instructional approaches, integration of sustainable practices, and a heightened focus on fostering essential research skills for both educators and students. The study underscores the significant adaptation to digital tools and virtual environments, potentially influenced by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkable findings include the growing importance of cognitive, social, and emotional competence in student development. This work provides valuable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers cross-talking the dynamic intersection of teaching and research in chemistry and biology education.Systematic review registration: Identifier 001-RS-FCIC-PQB-UNACH-2023.

Alternative grading strategies in organic chemistry: a journey

The global pandemic forced educators at all levels to re-evaluate how they would engage content, generate relevance, and assess the development of their students. While alternative grading strategies were not necessarily new to the world of chemical education research (CER) in 2020, the pandemic accelerated the examination of such principles for instructors who wished to prioritize learning over compliance with course policies and eschew points for grading. This article describes the transformation of a traditional lecture organic chemistry course under new, standards-based principles. Working from a discrete set of grouped learning outcomes, these courses aim to clearly define standards, give helpful feedback, indicate semester-long student progress, and allow for reattempts without penalty using a token system. Students explore both core (all of which must be passed in order to show progress) and non-core (students can choose a majority of these to pass) learning outcomes in a variety of formative and summative assessment approaches. Unique to the reformatting of these courses is the use of collaborative, take-home assessments, integration of multiple-choice questions, ungrading of student-submitted summary notes, live solving of select problems with peer feedback, and a learning check system that reinforces the flipped nature of content delivery. Another distinctive feature of the courses is the requirement for students who reach a certain threshold of repeating learning outcomes to perform in-person problem solving for the instructor. Overall, students report that the structure of the courses reduces their general and specific anxiety, lowers the temptations to challenge their academic integrity, and increases their own learning self-monitoring, reflecting known pedagogies of metacognition. The instructor reports that alternative grading strategies take far less time, generates more meaningful feedback, and shifts student attitudes away from final grading and toward genuine learning.

Implementation and Evaluation of a Team-Based Electrochemistry Module in a Large Undergraduate Class

Introductory chemistry courses at the undergraduate level offer students a foundation in chemistry principles and an opportunity to develop problem-solving skills. These principles and skill sets are widely applicable across disciplines, and thus first year chemistry courses are a gateway for many programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While first-year chemistry courses are essential for STEM students, the resulting large-enrolment classes in universities can lead to challenges in implementing active learning and in helping students to reach the course learning outcomes. The evolving field of Chemistry Education Research (CER) offers data and insight for improving teaching and learning strategies at the undergraduate level. We propose and evaluate an electrochemistry team-based problem-solving module as an active learning component of a large, first-year, blended chemistry course. In this paper, we explore the process for developing the module and evaluate this learning approach through focus groups, a large class survey, and student experience interviews. Through a preliminary case study approach, our findings suggest the interactive module is useful for enhancing conceptual understanding and problem-solving in chemistry, and improving academic confidence in electrochemistry learning outcomes. Moreover, students valued their engagement with the team-based problem-solving modules as an opportunity to build community, learn collaboratively, and successfully approach relevant problems.

Bridging chemistry education research and practice through research-practice partnerships

This perspective article is a call to establish research-practice partnerships (RPPs) to foster collaborations between instructors and education researchers to tune into the needs of practice, share evidence-based practices, and solve modern organic chemistry education problems. I begin the article by discussing some limitations of the traditional approach of “translating” research into practice and suggest RPPs as an alternative model for “bridging” research and practice. Importantly, RPPs have been shown to address persistent problems of practice and improve educational outcomes. While more common at the secondary level, RPPs are rarely leveraged in post-secondary chemistry education. The article goes on to provide a concrete and relevant context for potential future RPP efforts to improve aspects of organic chemistry education—RPPs between education researchers and organic chemistry instructors to work toward designing, administering, and testing interventions to support learners’ representational competence (RC). RC is a set of skills that allow for the reflective use of a variety of representations to think about, communicate, and act on chemical phenomena. Current instruction often falls short of effectively supporting learners in developing RC. It is often tacitly assumed that learners will develop RC without explicit instruction that scaffolds the development of the RC skills. While it is important to improve the teaching about and with representations, implementing innovative pedagogical approaches can be challenging, particularly when instructors feel isolated in their efforts within their work environments. The RPP model could catalyze solutions to these challenges by pooling diverse expertise, thus enabling more robust and sustainable educational innovations.

Why comparing matters – on case comparisons in organic chemistry

When working with domain-specific representations such as structural molecular representations and reaction mechanisms, learners need to be engaged in multiple cognitive operations, from attending to relevant areas of representations, linking implicit information to structural features, and making meaningful connections between information and reaction processes. For these processes, appropriate instruction, such as a clever task design, becomes a crucial factor for successful learning. Chemistry learning, and especially organic chemistry, merely addressed meaningful task design in classes, often using more reproduction-oriented predict-the-product tasks. In recent years, rethinking task design has become a major focus for instructional design in chemistry education research. Thus, this perspective aims to illustrate the theoretical underpinning of comparing cases from different perspectives, such as the structure-mapping theory, the cognitive load theory, and the variation theory, and outlines, based on the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, how instructors can support their students. Variations of this task design in the chemistry classroom and recommendations for teaching with case comparisons based on current state-of-the-art evidence from research studies in chemistry education research are provided.

How Chemistry Education Research & Practice serves chemistry education

This editorial coincides with my start as Editor for Chemistry Education Research and Practice (CERP). Since the purpose of CERP is to serve the chemistry education community of authors and readers, this editorial describes my reflection on how CERP serves the chemistry education community. CERP provides a ready venue for authors to share chemistry education research (CER) and for researchers and educators to learn from this research. By focusing exclusively on CER, it has served to differentiate CER from more general education research and scholarship in teaching and learning products. As a result, CERP provides clear recognition of CER including to those outside the field of chemistry education. A particular strength of CERP is the number of reviewers who provide constructive feedback within their reviews. This feedback supports authors in advancing their work and serves the readers by improving the quality and relevance of the work that appears in CERP. In closing, possibilities for how CERP may better serve the chemistry education community are raised as an ongoing discussion with the community.

Representing chemistry culture: ethnography's methodological potential in chemistry education research and practice

A goal in chemistry education research and teaching is to make chemistry education inclusive to our diverse students. Ethnography is one approach that can support this goal, because it supports researchers and educators in questioning what is considered ordinary by exploring chemistry as a culture. By exploring chemistry as a culture, we can understand how we represent the discipline of chemistry to our students in what we teach, how we teach, and who we teach. Questioning the ordinary aspects of research and teaching can help us work towards creating a more inclusive chemistry culture for our students, researchers, and instructors. Within this perspective, the authors explore ethnography as a research methodology and an approach to understanding experiences in practice. This perspective explores how different choices in research design, such as the research questions, theoretical framework, methods, and methodology framing, lead to different goals and representations of chemistry culture. This perspective aims to start conversations around what we can learn from different representations of chemistry culture for chemistry practice by questioning what is taken for granted in the learning theories chosen, approaches to interventions, and systematic barriers. In its potential to illuminate how chemistry culture is represented and transmitted to students, ethnography can help create more inclusive, accessible, and supportive spaces for learning and interdisciplinary research.

A recent study in Chemistry Education Research and Practice highlights the common pattern of student thinking known as ‘the octet framework’, and notes how it seems to relate to, but be inconsistent with, the octet rule: an idea commonly taught in introductory chemistry classes. The study noted the common feature of learners extending the octet rule into ‘a driving force’ for chemical change, but analysis also noted two other features of the alternative conceptual framework. It is argued here that these research findings reflect a key problem in chemistry education: one that the research community should prioritise for further investigation.

Analysis of organic chemistry students’ developing reasoning elicited by a scaffolded case comparison activity

Recent efforts in organic chemistry education research focus on investigating activities and strategies designed to elicit students’ mechanistic reasoning. This study investigates how a scaffolded case comparison activity implemented in an introductory organic chemistry course elicits and supports students’ mechanistic reasoning in an authentic classroom setting. The activity included an adaptation of a previously reported reasoning scaffold to support small-group student discussions comparing organic reactions. We analyzed students’ written responses to the in-class activity using Hammer's resources framework and Toulmin's argumentation model, interwoven to create an anti-deficit approach to exploring students’ developing reasoning. The analysis of students’ written artifacts sought to identify ways in which a scaffolded case comparison implemented in a collaborative class setting may support students’ engagement in complex reasoning and argumentation development. We found that the in-class activity elicited students’ writing about various aspects of mechanistic reasoning, including identifying explicit and implicit properties, dynamic reasoning, and multivariate reasoning. These findings indicate that the activity can engage students in complex mechanistic reasoning aspects in the classroom setting. Furthermore, this study extends the literature by detailing the nuances of students’ developing causal reasoning with energetic and electrostatic accounts as shown in their writing. The results highlight students’ emerging causal reasoning with varying levels of complexity and conceptual integration. This study provides direct implications for instructors seeking to implement similar classroom activities. The findings indicate directions for future research on the development of instructional activities and tools that further support students’ developing causal reasoning, such as adapting existing scaffolding structures to support argumentation development and the integration of challenging concepts such as energetics.

Factors associated with chemistry faculty members’ cooperative adoption of evidence-based instructional practices: results from a national survey

Despite institutional reform efforts to increase use of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) in undergraduate chemistry and STEM courses, didactic lecture remains the predominant mode of instruction. Research to inform these initiatives routinely focuses on drivers and barriers to EBIP adoption, with recent work investigating factors associated with faculty members’ cooperative adoption of EBIPs from five STEM disciplines including chemistry. To understand the role of these specific factors within undergraduate chemistry education across a broad set of institutions, we conducted a national survey of chemistry faculty members (n = 1105) from the United States in Spring 2023. The survey targeted constructs that may underlie the cooperative adoption of EBIPs, including faculty members’ perception of (1) using EBIPs as mutually beneficial, (2) having their success and failure intertwined, and (3) institutional climate around teaching. The survey also included items targeting teaching-specific social interactions, another potential aspect of cooperative adoption. Results from multilevel modeling suggest that EBIP adoption is associated with chemistry faculty members’ perception of using EBIPs as mutually beneficial, aligning with prior findings on STEM faculty members’ cooperative adoption of these practices. However, there is no evidence of an association between EBIP adoption and chemistry faculty members’ perception of campus climate around teaching, where prior findings indicate an inverse association among STEM faculty members. Results further indicate that EBIP adoption is associated with the number of people with whom one specifically discusses pedagogy, instruction, and assessment. Collectively, our results demonstrate that differences exist between STEM disciplines and point toward the chemistry education research community's responsibility to further explore EBIP adoption from a disciplinary lens. Our investigation also provides insight into factors associated with the cooperative adoption of EBIPs among chemistry faculty members on a national level; we identify several implications for how chemistry faculty member change agents (e.g., course coordinators, department leaders) may effectively promote EBIP adoption across the undergraduate chemistry curriculum.

Exploring factors within an introductory course that influence students’ perception of chemistry

A large number of students across the globe each year enroll in general chemistry courses as an academic requirement to obtain their degree. Although many take chemistry courses, it is not a subject sought out by many as a potential career. In some instances, chemistry hinders students from achieving their career goals. A plethora of chemical education research has focused on improving student attitude, self-efficacy, and motivation to enhance academic performance and retention in chemistry. However, only a few reports focus on the factors that affect student perception and self-efficacy towards chemistry. These factors are important as they can help us implement targeted interventions to improve perceptions and self-efficacy as we seek to increase diversity in STEM fields. In this research study, the most influential factors that affect a student's perception of chemistry are uncovered, and whether these factors are related to gender identity, letter grade, or pursuit of chemistry as a career. For our study population, the course instructor and course structure are the two most influential factors in a student's perception of chemistry. In addition, academically low-achieving students (i.e., students who earned Cs or lower in a course) are more likely to list the course structure as an influential factor, and high-achieving students (i.e., students who earned Bs or higher in a course) are more likely to select the course instructor as an influential factor. The majority (66%) of students who selected the course instructor as an influential factor believed that they would perform well in future chemistry courses, while 47% of those who selected the course structure had the same belief in their future chemistry performance. Overall, less than 11% of the study population (51 of 447 students) were interested in pursuing chemistry as a career after completing CHEM 1. However, the answer to increasing the number of chemistry majors could be held within course design and teaching pedagogy. This research study seeks to highlight the relationship between gender and letter grade with factors that influence perception of chemistry, and we hope the results can guide instructors as they consider course structure and teaching pedagogy.

Literature Review Regarding PCK of Chemistry Teachers and Prospective Chemistry Teachers

This research aims to provide an overview of the research methodology used in conducting a literature review of 21 journals indexed by Scopus and included in the Q1 category during the 2013-2022 period. This research uses a literature review method, this method is a scientific approach that provides a comprehensive picture of the development of a research topic. Through this literature review, researchers can obtain information regarding the year of publication, research methods applied, instruments used in each journal, and the focus of studies conducted by each journal. At the results and discussion stage, this research details the concept of Z score as a statistical value, factor analysis, correlation between factors, and coding analysis in the context of qualitative research. The concept of in-depth analysis which includes an in-depth examination of a subject or phenomenon is also discussed in detail. In addition, various research methods such as constant-comparative, person map items, PCS, TSPCK rubric, questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation are explained in depth. The importance of pedagogical competence in implementing the educational process is in the main spotlight, and analysis of the literature in the journal "Chemistry Education Research and Practice" shows the dominance of the use of qualitative methods in 2020. Interviews are recognized as an irrelevant method. only flexible but also in-depth, supported by the application of observation and analysis of supporting factors

Developing and validating an Next Generation Science Standards‐aligned construct map for chemical bonding from the energy and force perspective

AbstractChemical bonding is central to explaining many phenomena. Research in chemical education and the Framework for K–12 Science Education (the Framework) argue for new approaches to learning chemical bonding grounded in (1) using ideas of the balance of electric forces and energy minimization to explain bond formation, (2) using learning progressions (LPs) grounded in these ideas to support learning, and (3) engaging students in 3D learning reflected in integrating the three dimensions of scientific knowledge to make sense of phenomena. The dimensions include disciplinary core ideas, scientific and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. While the Framework describes the theoretical basis of 3D learning, empirical evidence for the development and validation of LPs for 3D learning is limited. This work addresses that issue for the topic of chemical bonding. We develop and validate a 3D construct map for chemical bonding grounded in the idea of balance of electric forces and energy minimization. A construct map represents a finer‐grained LP spanning a shorter period and focusing on specific aspects of a larger‐scale LP. An NGSS‐aligned validated 3D LP has never been reported for the topic of chemical bonding. The LP is based on data from 9th grade Mid‐Western and Western students who used the NGSS‐aligned curriculum. Multiple validity evidence sources, including interview and item response theory analysis using an assessment tool developed to probe the 3D construct map levels, were used. We demonstrate the feasibility of using the assessment tool for assigning levels to individuals and groups of learners, which is essential for the practical applicability of the 3D construct map and provides teachers with information on how to promote learning. We hope that the 3D LP presented here will serve as a guide to develop instructional and assessment approaches for chemical bonding grounded in the fundamental scientific principles and aligned to NGSS.
