Key competencies for global health research: systematic literature review and mapping

Abstract Background Despite a boom in global health programmes and trainings, there is a lack of clarity and standardisation about which competencies are essential for researchers in global health, who stem from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The objective was to map key competencies for global health research and approaches to progressively develop them in education and training. Methods We performed a systematic review in English in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Psychinfo/EBCSO host of literature published since 1 January 2010. 1827 articles were screened in duplicate. Data was extracted from 84 publications about focus in global health, recommended competencies and educational approaches, with two researchers giving a relevancy rating. AI-assisted extraction was conducted on 40 high-relevance publications to garner further information, informing development and application of a coding framework to these articles. Results Emerging results point to eight main domains and numerous subdomains related to competencies seen as critical for global health research. In addition to traditionally emphasised cognitive competencies (e.g. methodological), the literature underlined the importance of critical analyse of how systems related to globalisation, political economy and structural injustice shape health at local level. Also highlighted was the need for more focus on affective and practical competencies for conducting global health research in alignment with equity principles, including through innovative pedagogical approaches. Conclusions Our review identifies competencies seen as essential for global health researchers, including skills to critically analyse geopolitical, colonial and structural drivers, as well as self-reflexivity, (cultural) humility and other key affective competencies. It also highlights, however, the significant diversity of perspectives, lack of consensus, and ongoing disconnect between principles and practice. Key messages • Greater clarity and consensus is needed around the specific competencies required to work as a researcher in global health, taking account of diversity across disciplines, sectors and stages. • Global health researchers require skills to critically analyse geopolitical, colonial and structural drivers, as well as self-reflexivity, (cultural) humility and other key affective competencies.

Public health resilience and recovery in Ukraine: Academic partnerships to improve population health

Abstract Background Strengthening the public health workforce is among top priorities for the transformation of Ukraine’s public health system. As part of the USAID Public Health System Recovery and Resilience Activity, an Academic Partnership Collaborative brought together three Ukrainian universities (National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Sumy State University), two American universities (Temple University and Drexel University), and the All-Ukrainian Association of Public Health Specialists (UPHA) to enhance the competencies of public health graduates in Ukraine. Objectives The collaborative focuses on strengthening the Ukrainian universities’ public health curricula and the teaching and research competencies of the Ukrainian faculty, making the curricular changes in Ukraine better aligned with US and European academic standards. The university partners are collaborating with the newly established UPHA in building partnerships with peer organizations in the US (American Public Health Association) and Europe (EuPHA) and sharing advancements in public health education with the broader community of public health practitioners in Ukraine to enhance their competencies to improve population health and align with European systems of public health. Results We have established linkages among all partners via an initial meeting in Uzhhorod, Ukraine in April 2024. We anticipate results by November 2024 to include curriculum review recommendations, coaching on prioritized topics for the Ukrainian partners, faculty development plans, and the establishment of continuing professional development programs in collaboration with UPHA. Conclusions Through this partnership, selected Ukrainian universities will have an enhanced and sustainable capacity to train the public health workforce and will become leading examples for other public health programs to simulate and collaborate with beyond the project. Key messages • Ukraine’s resilience and recovery relies upon the strength of the current and future public health workforce; mechanisms for building public health training are essential to a healthy population. • A collaborative process of strategic activities among American and Ukrainian universities and professional associations can be effective in building a resilient public health system in Ukraine.

THE PROBLEM OF DEVELOPING THE RESEARCH COMPETENCE OF SPECIAL EDUCATORS

The article deals with the problem of developing the research competence of special educators. The article analyzes foreign and domestic experiences in the development of research competence. The essence of the concept of research competence is revealed, and its features and capabilities are defined and disclosed. The characteristics of the concepts of competence, competence approach, and research competence are given. Research competence is the formation of skills necessary for carrying out research activities, and the presence of motivation for scientific activity It is characterized by achieving the result necessary to achieve the set goals, planning, designing, conducting research, discussing and demonstrating their results. Research objectives: to identify the theoretical and methodological foundations of the problem of developing the research competence of special teachers; to systematize the methodological foundations of the problem of developing the research competence of special teachers. The purpose of the study: theoretical methodological substantiation of the problem of developing the research competence of special teachers, the development of a methodology and experimental verification of its effectiveness. In order to identify the effectiveness of the problem of developing the research competence of special teachers, an ascertaining experiment and a questionnaire survey of students were conducted. Based on the results of the survey, the levels and content of the problem of developing the research competence of special teachers were determined. The results have been verified and displayed on the chart.

Building search and analytical competences of master’s students for scientific reviewing

Today, scientific reviewing is not the area of strength of Russian researchers. In many ways, it is due to the lack of research competences taught to the graduate students, and, in particular, search and analytical competences that correspond to the active-operational component of the competence. To overcome this shortcoming, the authors have developed and tested an approach to selecting publications for scientific reviewing. The approach comprises five steps: selecting the starting sample, its expansion, truncation, analysis, and final selection. The pedagogical experiment accomplished with the small groups demonstrated significant increase in the level of research competences in the master’s students who took the specialized course Science Communication based on the above approach. The course resulted in increased competences essential for effective search and analysis of scientific information. Further implementation of the method will improve the educational environment for building research competences in graduate students.

Methodological Diversity in Health Care master’s Thesis in Finland: A Pilot Study

Objectives: Master’s level education could strengthen the efforts to sustain and retain professionals in health and social care by providing possibilities of career development. The master’s educations thesis process the students demonstrate their research competence could be one answer to research competence in clinical practice. This research examines what kind of research methods have been used in the master’s level health care education theses in Finland. Methods: 1056 master’s theses in health care educations in Finland in 2017-2018 were analyzed with the document analysis and categorized as qualitative, quantitative, literature reviews and other methods. Results: 30% of theses were conducted with qualitative and 12 % with quantitative methods. 6 % were literature reviews while the most were categorized in the other methods (52%). Conclusions: Results could be partially explained with the context of the study, but at the same time they raise a critical question and need for future research.

The effect of nursing students' attitudes towards scientific research and related factors on individual innovativeness profiles

BackgroundEvaluating the attitudes of nursing students towards scientific research is pivotal for enhancing the quality of care and reinforcing evidence-based nursing practices. Therefore, nursing students to embody a disposition towards openness to cultivate innovative thinking to effectively discern and address the evolving needs within nursing care services. AimThis study was conducted to determine the effects of nursing students' attitudes towards scientific research and related factors on their individual innovation profiles. MethodsA total of 375 nursing students were included in the study. The data were collected using a Demographic Information Form, Individual Innovativeness Scale and Attitude towards Scientific Research Scale. For between-group comparisons, the student t-test and One-way ANOVA were utilized for normally distributed data, whereas the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied for non-normally distributed data. Linear regression analysis was employed to predict the individual innovativeness profiles of nursing students based on their attitudes towards scientific research and associated factors. ResultsAccording to the model created as a result of linear regression analysis, nursing students' attitudes towards scientific research and associated factors elucidate 22.9 % of the variance in individual innovativeness profiles. In this study, it was discerned that participants with elevated computer skills, a sense of competence in research conduct, a proclivity for engaging in scientific research, and a penchant for monitoring Turkish publications exhibited higher mean scores in the Individual Innovativeness Scale. ConclusionThis study established that nursing students' attitudes towards scientific research and associated factors possessed predictive capacity for individual innovativeness profiles.

Improving Instrumental Research Competencies in Master's Degree Students: Research Education Program as a Strategy for Training Productive Researchers

Purpose: The present study evaluated instrumental research competencies in master's degree students using the application of a research program as a strategy. Theoretical framework: It was based on the theoretical foundations on research and instrumental research competencies, as well as the types of scientific production, as ways of providing this knowledge to future researchers. Previous studies that addressed the relationship between the research education program and the training of researchers with research competencies were reviewed, identifying the key elements that contribute to the success of this strategy. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design was developed with the participation of 25 master's degree students with mention in university teaching from a public university in the Loreto region of Peru. Results and Discussion: A significant relationship was found between the research educational program and instrumental research competencies (p<0.005) in which the training of master's degree students in instrumental research competencies partially had this relationship. The results indicated that the master's degree students with mention in university teaching who were part of the study had better instrumental research competencies. Research, practical and social implications: It can be affirmed that research-based learning is important to improve scientific writing, since it allows for a better formation of competent researchers. Originality/value: This study contributes original value to the field of master's study by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the research education program to improve instrumental research competencies in master's degree students in Peruvian universities.

Impact of collective knowledge on individual research competence: exploring the mediating influence of knowledge management processes

PurposeThe purpose of the current study is to investigate the impact of collective knowledge on individual research competence. Further, the study investigates the mediation effect of the knowledge management process (KMP).Design/methodology/approachThe cross-sectional study adopts a quantitative conclusive research design. The study collects data specifically from academicians of Uttarakhand higher education institutions (HEIs). The study uses random sampling because the list of faculty members is uploaded on the website of the university portal. The author directly sends the questionnaire to the email of the respondents and uses social media platforms. For the data analysis, the study used SMART-PLS 4.0.FindingsThe findings of the study reveal that KM infrastructure (KMI) and KM strategy directly impact KMP. The study also reveals that the KMP significantly impacts individual research competence. The current study also finds partial mediation support among KMI, KMP and individual research competence, and between KM strategy, KMP and individual research competence.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study uses a cross-sectional research design, future studies may include the longitudinal design to measure the effect of KM elements on individual research competence. The current study includes the data from the Uttarakhand region only, and it is difficult to generalize the results specifically to other states.Practical implicationsThe study emphasizes the importance of KM system development, a supportive KMI and a balanced KM strategy in HEIs.Originality/value Investigating collective knowledge’s impact on individual research competence, this study unveils mediation in KMP. Future research can broaden horizons by using the model.

Unlocking potential: exploring the interplay between entrepreneurship and research competence across diverse academic disciplines

This study aims to identify and analyze the self-assessment of entrepreneurship sub-competences among students at Latvian higher education institutions. The research questions addressed include: What is the self-assessment of students’ entrepreneurship competence at different levels of education? How and to what extent does the self-assessment of students’ entrepreneurship competence vary across different thematic groups? How and to what extent does the self-assessment of students’ entrepreneurship competence differ between academic and professional programs? Do bachelor’s and Master’s students’ entrepreneurship competences improve during the study process? Additionally, the study explores the correlation between students’ self-assessment of their entrepreneurship competence and their research competence. Data were collected using an assessment tool for students’ transversal competences developed in the ESF project “Development and implementation of the education quality monitoring system”, which consists of an online survey data and were analyzed with SPSS Statistics v.21. The results show that students evaluated their entrepreneurship competence just above average. Bachelor-level students improved their entrepreneurship competences during their studies, but there were no statistically significant differences between Master’s students’ evaluations in their first and last study years. Network analysis indicates that the entrepreneurship sub-competence “Identification, mobilization, and efficient use of internal and external resources” is connected with most research competence dimensions, and improving this sub-competence will therefore have the most effect on influencing research competence.

Affordances of community-oriented praxis in teacher education: a configurative review

This configurative review explores how nurturing and enacting a community-oriented praxis (COP) in teacher education can enhance teacher candidates’ preparedness for teaching roles whilst addressing some broader educational and societal concerns. Here, CoP is defined as practices that consider, connect with, and draw on local community strengths, needs, and aspirations for the good of individuals, communities, and society more broadly. We review 31 cases in 37 articles on explicitly community-oriented teacher education (COTE) initiatives from nine country contexts where teacher educators, school-based mentors, and members of local communities collaboratively facilitate the learning experiences of participants in teacher education (i.e., teacher candidates). An analysis of the motivations, processes, and outcomes of the initiatives in the COTE cases highlights benefits such as developing teacher candidates’ pedagogical content knowledge and research competence; fostering social justice consciousness and critical action; and facilitating the sustainable recruitment and retention of teachers especially in marginalised contexts. Implications and possible directions for teacher education are discussed.

IMPROVING STUDENTS’RESEARCH COMPETENCE IN TEACHING THE KAZAKH LANGUAGE

The article discusses the enhancement of students’ research competence within the context of teaching the Kazakh language. Developing learners’ research skills is becoming a significant factor in higher education system. This research seeks to undertake a detailed examination of students’ attitudes toward the Kazakh language, identify existing obstacles, and design effective strategies to assist the development of research competency within the context of Kazakh language and culture studies. This study examines both foreign and local studies to provide a methodology for teaching languages and culture. It also attempts to promote a successful integration of research approaches into the learning process for Kazakh language acquisition. This study paper applies a qualitative method, using semi-structured interviews, to collect thorough data on students’ opinions and experiences with developing research abilities while learning the Kazakh language. The methodology intends to explore the many features of competence, language acquisition issues, and the significance of research activities in improving students’ language proficiency.

Artificial intelligence in developing doctoral students' research competencies

The study deals with the topical issue of introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the students’ professional training at the third educational and research level of higher education. The aim of the study is to empirically verify the AI role in building the research competence of future doctors of philosophy (PhDs). The research employed the following methods: monitoring, quantitative, qualitative, comparative data analysis, modelling. The study involved monitoring the development of the students’ research competence of the third educational and research level of higher education according to substantive, design, procedural, optional, communicative components. The method of using AI in building the research competence of PhD students was developed and tested. The level of research competence increased during the implementation of the method of using AI. So, the growth was the following: substantive – by 7.5%, design – by 10%, procedural – by 8.4%, optional – by 11.4%, and communicative – by 8.5% components. The results of the study can be used in the educational process of higher education institutions (HEIs) to create the content of the training of applicants. The prospect of research is the development of recommendations regarding the use of AI tools in the development of their research skills.

University students’ research work as the most important component of professional training (the case of specialty 32.05.01 Medical and preventive care and training program 43.03.02 Tourism)

Scientific research and innovation play a key role in the modern world as determinants of the development of society, the economy and the state. It is quite obvious that awareness of the importance of developing research competencies in the process of professional training at a university will stimulate the involvement of students in scientific activities, which in the future will make a significant contribution to the development of society as a whole. The problem of the research is to identify students’ ideas about the state of research work at a university.The goal of the research is to reveal the state of students' research work in universities based on students' opinions. The research methods used are general scientific ones (analysis, comparison, generalization, synthesis), survey, explanatory and illustrative methods.The research results are the following: the importance of students' research activities has been substantiated; the opinions of students at a number of universities in the Russian Federation on modern trends in student research work was carried out; Factors that hinder the effective development of students' research work have been identified.Key conclusions: research work of students is an integral basic component of professional training; problems in organizing this type of activity have been identified (lack of understanding of the place of research work in the process of professional training, weak involvement of students, students’ research competencies are not sufficiently developed, etc.); factors inhibiting the active involvement of students in research efforts are employment of students, funding problems, the lack of an effective mechanism for motivating and stimulating young scientists, etc.

Development of Research Core Competencies for Academic Practice Among Health Professionals: A Mixed-Methods Approach.

Of the 4 pillars of academic practice for nursing and allied health, research has been the least developed and no standard competency framework exists that is embedded in health professional scopes of practice. The objective of this article is to report on the preliminary development and pilot-testing of research and academic scholarship core competencies for nonphysician health professionals working within a large urban academic health sciences center. We conducted an internal and external environmental scan and multiphase consultation process to develop research and academic core competencies for health professionals working within an interprofessional setting. The final framework outlines 3 levels of research proficiency (novice, proficient, and advanced) and the relevant roles, specific competencies, and observable actions and/or activities for each proficiency level. Organizations should consider the integration of the framework within performance management processes and the development of a road map and self-assessment survey to track progress over time and support health professionals with their academic practice goals.

Importance and Didactic Conditions of Teaching the Pedagogical Heritage of Beyimbet Maylin

The article analyzes the pedagogical heritage of Beyimbet Maylin, which has not yet entered scientific circulation, and has not been noticed by methodologists-scientists, and their importance in the development of domestic science is evaluated. For the first time, four educational books written by Beyimbet Maylin, a prominent writer, who have their own place in Kazakh literature, are being studied. In the study, the ways of studying the history of the writing of textbooks left behind by the writer, introducing their content-structural system to future philology teachers were differentiated. Providing information about the history of the formation of domestic textbook science, the possibilities of forming professional-cognitive and research competences of students are analyzed. The main idea in the research work is that students need to effectively use new educational technologies and interactive teaching methods during the analysis of historical heritage, because this, in turn, expands the opportunities for improving the quality of professional education of students. The scientific importance of the article is demonstrated by the unified methodological system of applied teaching and the analysis of educational materials and the effectiveness of using their selection criteria in the organization of students' project work, in the performance of complex text analysis tasks. This proves the innovativeness of the proposed research work, dedicated to a new topic. The article analyzes the effective ways of presenting textbooks written by Beyimbet Maylin to philology students, systematizes the technological conditions. During the pedagogical experiment, it is planned to develop students' professional qualifications related to theoretical and historical-pedagogical heritage, critical thinking skills related to educational materials. They are followed by analyzing the progress and results of work included in one module of a special elective subject. Such complexity ensures the integrity of the research results presented in the article and the reliability of the proposed principles. Historical-pedagogical, system-typological, genre-style analyzes were used in the research work in conjunction with teaching technologies in accordance with modern requirements. The results of the study fully demonstrated the effectiveness of this unit.

Forming Readiness of Students to Implement Research Activities in Pedagogical Practice

The article discusses ways to increase the effectiveness of research competence during practice from the whole set of problems of developing students' research abilities. The process of developing the readiness of physics students to conduct research work during internships in schools in the city of Pavlodar is described. A step-by-step plan for preparing students for teaching practice in a modern educational environment is proposed. The relevance of this article lies in the need to prepare students of pedagogical universities to organize and conduct research study with schoolchildren. The purpose of the study is to prepare students to conduct research activities at school during teaching practice. The main signs of the development of research skills in future teachers should be, in our opinion, the ability to structure lessons with elements of research activity; skills in drawing up a research plan; preparation of creative lesson and home research assignments; increasing the level of knowledge of students in physics and developing research skills. The article also discusses the stages of preparation for the implementation of research skills that reveal the teaching abilities and professionally important personal qualities of students.

THE ESSENCE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF RESEARCH COMPETENCE IN THE PERSONAL AND EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS

The article defines the essence of students’ research competence, characterizes its role in the formation of a teenager’s personality, which includes promoting the development of critical thinking, fostering the skills of independent learning and self-organization, and stimulating students’ creative activity by encouraging idea generation. It also ensures the development of social skills, such as cooperation, communication, and more. The main components of research competence are identified, namely: knowledge, abilities, and skills that ensure successful research and develop the capacity for independent, creative, and critical work with information. The importance of research competence is described, which lies in the development of creative and intellectual potential, subject-specific and general skills, as well as in stimulating students’ interest and motivation for learning activities. An analysis of the scientific contributions of scholars who, based on pedagogical theory and practice, demonstrate the importance of developing research competence in teenagers during the learning process is provided. We have demonstrated the importance of a favorable learning environment for the formation of students’ research competence, which includes interactive lessons, projects, experiments, pedagogical support, free access to educational resources, and more. The factors of successful research activity are also analyzed, and its influence on motivating teenagers to learn and develop is characterized, as it provides an opportunity to apply acquired knowledge in practice, making learning more meaningful and purposeful. The statement that the development of research competence is essential for the formation of a competent, creative, and independent citizen capable of adapting to the challenges of the modern world is substantiated.

RESEARCH APPROACH IN METHODOLOGICAL FUTURE SCIENCE TEACHER TRAINING

The article is devoted to a research approach implementation in the methodological training of future science teachers. The author emphasizes the need to develop research competence in higher education students majoring in the subject specialty 014.15 Secondary Education (Natural Sciences) and obtaining a professional qualification of a teacher of natural sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology to work in the New Ukrainian School. The article’s purpose is to reveal the essence of the research competence of future science teachers and the peculiarities of implementing the research approach in their methodological training. It has been established that the research approach involves the organization of the educational process in which learning takes place through research activities. The research competence of future science teachers is interpreted as an integrative quality of a personality that combines motivation for research, methodological knowledge and knowledge of research technologies, research skills, the ability to carry out research activities, organize them with students in teaching science subjects, and evaluate their effectiveness. It is determined that this research competence combines motivational, cognitive, activity-operational, and reflective components. The importance of methodological disciplines in the formation of research competence of future teachers of natural sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology is emphasized. It has been found that the research approach in the methodological training of future teachers requires the use of specific teaching methods and technologies (project, contextual, case technology, research laboratory work). It contributes to the research competence of higher education students development, in particular, their ability to organize students’ research activities in science classes in general secondary education institutions.
