NURSING RESEARCH IN VICTORIA: A SNAPSHOT OF CURRENT POLICY

The primary aim of this study was to determine the current profile of nursing research in the acute and psychiatric domains of hospitals/health services in Victoria. A self-administered questionnaire was developed by the authors to obtain information on the individual, environmental and organisational characteristics influencing nursing research activity within these settings. The questionnaire was distributed to 422 health services in Victoria. Eighty-eight responses were received representing a return rate of 20.9%. The respondents indicated a high level of interest in research and research utilisation, with a preparedness to provide organisational support. However, relatively few reported the articulation of nursing research into the organisations’ mission statement or employing nurses in dedicated research positions. The results suggest that organisations continue to be hampered by a number of barriers to increasing research activity and utilisation by nurses.

Building a Foundation for Excellence: Advancing Evidence-Based Practice and Nursing Research in a Multi-campus Healthcare Setting

Nurse-generated research is imperative to improve patient outcomes and requires strategic investment and a proactive approach to supporting nursing research activities and education. This paper describes facets of a robust, comprehensive infrastructure to advance nursing research. Nurse leaders may adopt these strategies to meet Magnet® Sources of Evidence and foster a culture of inquiry in their organizations.

Global nursing research activity from 2009 to 2020: A bibliometric analysis.

Bibliometric analysis of the nursing literature can provide insights into the current state and dynamics of the nursing profession. This study aimed to assess global nursing-related research activity from 2009 to 2020. The corpus of nursing papers was harvested from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The bibliometric indicators and VOSviewer mapping of the retrieved papers were presented. The search found 109,782 papers, and 39.0% of papers reported funded studies. Publication numbers were increasing. The USA was the most prolific country in literature production and international collaboration in nursing studies. International cooperation in nursing research was dominated by developed regions. Among the 20 most cited articles, 75% were published in first quartile journals, and review papers received a higher number of citations than original research articles. Author keyword analysis identified 'quality of life', 'mental health', 'nursing students' education' and 'adolescent' as common nursing focus topics. The publication trend of nursing papers was positive. However, several problems were associated with nursing research activity, including low research funding, regionally centred research activity and inactivity of developing regions in terms of international collaborations, which need to be addressed by policy makers, nursing managers and scholars.

IntroductionThe effective integration of professional nursing staff with university training into care processes is associated internationally with better patient outcomes. In Germany, there is a current lack of reliable figures on graduates and their areas of responsibility. Therefore, the aim of this follow-up survey, designed as a repetition of a previous one, was to ascertain the number of nurses with a Bachelor's or Master's degree involved in direct patient care at university medical centers. MethodIn a cross-sectional study, chief nursing officers in university medical centers were asked to quote the number of professional nurses with a university degree (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate). Additional questions focused on their tasks and responsibilities and the measures undertaken to facilitate their integration into the organization. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. ResultsIn total, n=29 valid questionnaires from 35 university medical centers were included in the analysis, resulting in a response rate of 82.85%. For a total of 18 centers, the number of university-qualified nurses had increased by n=786 between 2015 (n=593) and 2018 (n=1,379).The overall percentage of nurses with a university degree working at a university medical center in the study was 3.16% (SD=1.66; min – max=1.09 – 6.69; Q1 – Q3=1.49 – 4.04; 95% CI 2.30 to 3.95). In direct patient care, the quota was 2.11% (SD=1.40; min – max=0.47 – 5.42; Q1 – Q3=0.87 – 3.16; 95% CI 1.36 to 2.76). The main focus of their duties was on standard care and patient education (graduates with a Bachelor's degree), evidence-based nursing practice development (Master's degree) and research activities (doctoral degree). DiscussionCompared to 2015, the proportion of professional nursing staff with university training has increased but remains at a very low level. These nurses perform relevant clinical tasks and are involved in the development of good practice. However, there is a need for better competence-based differentiation.

Assessment of nurses’ involvement in health research and policy development at a Federal Teaching Hospital in South East Nigeria

Background: Nurses account for a significant proportion of the health-care workforce in most countries; however, they are marginally represented in policy decision-making. Aim: To assess nurses’ involvement in health research and policy making at a Federal Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional design was adopted by using 305 nurses. Data collection was done by means of a validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively by using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Results: The findings revealed that 71.1% of the respondents had been involved in research activity; however, only 16.6% had participated in a research study after school. The result also revealed that only 23.6% of the respondents had been involved in health policy decision-making in the hospital. Educational qualification did not have any influence on their involvement with research and policy development. The major barriers identified were lack of knowledge and relevant skills (89.8%), lack of organizational support (84.5%), and professional dichotomy (67.2%). The respondents strongly agreed that organizational support (94.4%), having interest in politics (89.8%), mentoring in research (84.6%), higher education in nursing (84.2%), funding of research (80%), and belonging to professional organizations (80%) will enhance their involvement in research and health policy decision-making. Conclusion: Nurses have not been adequately involved in research and policy development. Findings revealed organizational and individual factors as barriers to nurses’ involvement in the research and policy-making process. These findings, therefore, suggest strengthening nurses for effective participation in health policy and building support for research activities in nursing.

Exploring sociodemographic factors related to practice, attitude, knowledge, and skills concerning evidence-based practice in clinical nursing.

This study aimed to explore sociodemographic factors related to evidence-based practice (EBP) competency in Japanese nurses in university hospitals. In March 2016, a survey was distributed to 843 clinical nurses who directly provide nursing care at two university hospitals in Japan. Multiple regression analyses were conducted on data received from 472 nurses using the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (Japanese version). Sociodemographic factors related to EBP competency were experience with conducting nursing research as a part of continuing education, education about EBP, advanced practice certification (certified nurse specialists/certified nurses), and years of experience in clinical nursing. These factors differed across the four subscales of the questionnaire: Practice, Attitude, Knowledge of Research and Practice, and Skills of Research and Practice. Specifically, experience with two or more nursing research activities was significantly positively associated with Attitude and Knowledge/Skills Concerning Research and Practice of EBP, but not related to the implementation of EBP itself. Advanced practice certification was significantly positively associated with Practice and Attitude of EBP. Our study quantitatively identified sociodemographic factors including experience with conducting nursing research and advanced practice certification status that were found to be related to EBP competency and these factors were differently associated with the four subscales of the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (Japanese version). EBP education should depend on nurses' levels of EBP competency, and nursing educators and managers need to be cognizant of their nurses' sociodemographic factors when providing EBP education.

It is my pleasure to highlight nursing research at Seattle Children's. This column offered by the Journal of Pediatric Nursing is commendable, drawing attention to nursing research activities at pediatric centers as well as pediatric units embedded within larger health care systems. First, a brief introduction to Seattle Children's is provided. Before describing the research program at Children's, I'll outline of the role of research in the world of evidence-based nursing practice and offer an argument for the needs for increased pediatric nursing research, particularly research in hospital settings.

Ground-up-top down: a mixed method action research study aimed at normalising research in practice for nurses and midwives

BackgroundImproving health, patient and system outcomes through a practice-based research agenda requires infrastructural supports, leadership and capacity building approaches, at both the individual and organisational levels. Embedding research as normal nursing and midwifery practice requires a flexible approach that is responsive to the diverse clinical contexts within which care is delivered and the variable research skills and interest of clinicians. This paper reports the study protocol for research being undertaken in a Local Health District (LHD) in New South Wales (NSW) Australia. The study aims to evaluate existing nursing and midwifery research activity, culture, capacity and capability across the LHD. This information, in addition to input from key stakeholders will be used to develop a responsive, productive and sustainable research capacity building framework aimed at enculturating practice-based research activities within and across diverse clinical settings of the LHD.MethodsA three-phased, sequential mixed-methods action research design underpinned by Normalization Process Theory (NPT).Participants will be nursing and midwifery clinicians and managers across rural and metropolitan services. A combination of survey, focus group, individual interviews and peer supported action-learning groups will be used to gather data. Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, together with thematic analysis of qualitative data to produce an integrated report.DiscussionUnderstanding the current research activity and capacity of nurses and midwives, together with organisational supports and culture is essential to developing a productive and sustainable research environment. However, knowledge alone will not bring about change. This study will move beyond description of barriers to research participation for nurses and midwives and the promulgation of various capacity building frameworks to employ a theory driven action-oriented approach to normalisation of nursing and midwifery research practice. In doing so, our aim is to make possible the utilisation, generation and translation of practice based research that informs improved patient and service delivery outcomes.

The state of European nursing research: dead, alive, or chronically diseased? A systematic literature review.

Reviews of nursing research have suggested that most is descriptive; with no more than 15% providing strong evidence for practice. No studies have examined this from the perspective of nursing research conducted in Europe. The aim of this study was to review reports of European clinical nursing research in the top 20 nursing journals in 2010 to establish a baseline of nursing research activity in the year immediately prior to the launch of a European Science Foundation network to increase the proportion of intervention research in Europe. We identified eligible reports that were then data-extracted by two independent reviewers. Disagreements were resolved through pair discussion and independent arbitration. We appraised and synthesized topics, methods, and the extent to which studies were programmatic. We synthesized data as proportions of study reports meeting our a priori categorization criteria. We identified 1995 published reports and included 223 from 21 European countries, of which 193 (86.6%) reported studies of primary research only, 30 (13.5%) secondary research, and three (1.4%) a mix of primary and secondary. Methodological description was often poor, misleading, or even absent. One hundred (44.8%) articles reported observational studies, 87 (39.0%) qualitative studies. We found 26 (11.7%) articles reporting experimental studies, 10 (4.5%) of which were randomized controlled trials. We found 29 (13.0%) reports located within a larger program of research. Seventy-six (34.1%) articles reported studies of nursing interventions. European research in nursing reported in the leading nursing journals remains descriptive and poorly described. Only a third of research reports concerned nursing interventions, and a tiny proportion were part of a programmatic endeavor. Researchers in nursing must become better educated and skilled in developing, testing, evaluating, and reporting complex nursing interventions. Editors of nursing journals should insist on systematic reporting of research designs and methods in published articles.

An exploration of nursing research perceptions of registered nurses engaging in research activities at a metropolitan hospital in Western Australia

To explore perceptions about nursing research of registered nurses (RNs) who were engaged in research activities at a metropolitan hospital in Western Australia. In order to improve RNs' research engagement and promote evidence-based practice, Nurse Research Consultants (NRCs) were appointed jointly by the study hospital and a local university. This joint appointment commenced in 2004 in the hospital's emergency department. Early findings indicated that the NRC role was effective in assisting registered nurses with research activities and hence the NRC role was expanded to all areas of the hospital. However, no formal investigation had been carried out to explore the effect of the NRC role on RNs' engagement with nursing research across the hospital. A qualitative interview process. Ten RN participants from the adult and paediatric wards were interviewed. Audio-recorded data were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was undertaken. Four main themes were identified, namely: perceptions of nursing research, perceived enablers, perceived barriers and improving research engagement. There was some overlap with some sub-themes being linked with more than one theme. This appeared to be due to differing levels of research education and research engagement. 6pc some of the RNs that participated in this study were experienced in the conduct of research, finding adequate support from NRCs in the workplace, whilst others experienced barriers limiting their involvement in nursing research activities. These barriers could be reduced with additional education, support, improved communication, time and opportunities to undertake research activities.

Nursing research capacity building in a Spanish hospital: an intervention study

To evaluate a contextually framed intervention to increase nursing research capacity among clinical nurses in a Spanish hospital. In Spain, there has been a paucity of nursing research and a lack of nursing research culture. Currently, with the European Convergence of educational programmes and qualifications, there is a growing interest in promoting nursing research in this country. A quasi-experimental design. Using a control (n = 81) and an intervention group (n = 89) of nurses, pre- and postintervention data were collected from both groups to evaluate the impact of the intervention at three times. The intervention, implemented over one year, consisted of the establishment of a mentors' network and an educational programme with research courses and journal clubs. Data collection methods included questionnaires, objective tests and scales. The nursing research capacity of the hospital developed moderately after the intervention, with an increase in participants' research capability (knowledge, skills and attitudes) and a decrease in some of the inhibiting factors identified in the context. A new comprehensive and contextually framed intervention to develop nursing research capacity has been designed, implemented and evaluated in a hospital. It contributed to the development of the nursing research culture in the context. Relevance to clinical practice. An increase in nursing research activity could improve the quality of nursing care through the incorporation of research evidence in practice. This intervention could be used as a model in other hospitals, and it should be evaluated in other contexts.

Updated Research Priorities for Neuroscience Nursing

In 2007, the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation (NNF) convened a research panel to update NNF's research priorities used to guide funding. The research panel identified leaders in neuroscience nursing and conducted a review of neuroscience nursing research literature and an American Association of Neuroscience Nurses membership survey on research priorities. A workgroup of leaders in neuroscience nursing was then convened to draft and set priorities on the basis of the review of the literature and the membership survey. The updated priorities were submitted to the NNF Board of Trustees for approval. The revised document reviews the mission of NNF and outlines six strategies and five program areas (including specific subareas) that represent priorities for NNF research funding. The purpose of the updated priority document is to provide guidelines for the systematic development of knowledge in neuroscience nursing through the encouragement of selected neuroscience nursing research activities.

Design and validation of an instrument to measure nursing research culture: the Nursing Research Questionnaire (NRQ)

To describe the development of a self-administered questionnaire to study the nursing research culture in a Spanish hospital. There is urgent need to promote nursing research in Spain. To do this, it is imperative to understand the Spanish nursing research culture. As no valid Spanish instrument was available, a new instrument called the Nursing Research Questionnaire was developed. A survey and psychometric approach. The development and testing of the instrument had three phases which included: identification of concepts and questions; pilot work of the first draft of the tool; and a survey and further test of the instrument. The new instrument was a self-administered questionnaire which contained 43 items divided into three main sections: nurses' research capability; research related activity; and factors influencing research development. The pilot work and the survey results indicated adequate content and face validity of the tool. The internal consistencies of the tool for the four subscales ranged from 0.25-0.93, and the intraclass correlation coefficients in three subscales were over 0.70. This paper describes the development of a self-administered questionnaire to gather information about the nursing research culture in a Spanish hospital. After further refinement, its use will provide information that will contribute to the development of nursing research in Spain. The new instrument could be used to provide an understanding of the research culture among nurses in Spain, which will help to design targeted interventions to promote nursing research activity and improve the quality of nursing practice and patient care.

What we write and what we cite: A comment on Mantzoukas (2009)

Recently Mantzoukas (2009) undertook the very ambitious task of carefully reading and content analyzing the abstracts from all 2574 research articles published in the top 10 general nursing research journals from 2000 to 2006. The overall goal of his efforts was to identify potential barriers that limit the implementation of published research evidences in the practice context. His approach was to group articles using three categorization schemes: research methodology employed, type of evidence produced, and issue of study. In addition to addressing his stated objective, the aggregate-level analyses he provides are informative in their own right in that they describe the overall state of recent research activities in nursing. For example, he reports that only 7% of all articles published employed experimental methods. The data he tabulated have considerable value beyond that discussed in his article. For instance, the detailed tables he presents allow for calculation of correlations between journal impact factor scores and the characteristics of the research articles (according to his categorization schemes) published in these top nursing research journals. Peer‐reviewed publication output of psychiatric nurses in the Republic of Ireland

Pre-registration psychiatric nursing education, in the Republic of Ireland, has recently moved to a 4-year degree programme, with the first cohort of psychiatric nursing graduants graduating in 2006. In addition, a number of other policy initiatives have taken place that will have a significant impact on psychiatric nursing practice, education and research activity. To provide a baseline for future benchmarking and evaluation, the year 2005 seemed an appropriate time to reflect on and record publications by psychiatric nurses in the Republic of Ireland. This article reports the findings of a study undertaken to identify psychiatric nursing publications in peer-reviewed journals, with a view to establishing trends in publication, such as the type of publication, subject area and journal type. Emerging trends are identified and discussed in light of concurrent changes in psychiatric nursing and mental health care, and suggestions are made for future development of publication capacity.
