A novel development of h-CSLQFL controller for optimal sizing and economic pricing of battery in electric vehicle system

This paper proposes a novel design of h-CSLQFL controller for reducing the battery size (kWh) and battery cost (US$/kWh) of electric vehicle (EV) system. The h-CSLQFL controller is a hybrid controller which is formed by the combination of Cuckoo search optimization (CSO), linear quadratic regulator (LQR), and fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The higher battery cost is one of the biggest challenges with EV due to which a significant number of consumers cannot afford to purchase it. The replacement of conventional vehicles with EV creates ecofriendly and sustainable solutions. For attaining the optimal reduced cost of battery, a strategy has been demonstrated by framing a multi-objective function which is controlled with h-CSLQFL controller. It commences with the design of mathematical model of EV in which supply voltage and current are the input parameters whereas the speed and torque are the output parameters. Thereafter, LQR controller was designed and implemented for analyzing the performance parameter of EV. Afterwards, CSO controller in support with LQR controller has been formulated in closed loop manner. At the end, the multi-objective function is controlled with LQR based CSO and LQR controller. It is observed that the least optimal economic cost and size of EV battery have been attained with h-CSLQFL controller in comparison to the LQR based CSO and LQR controller. In addition to this, the least risk factor and reduced sensitivity have been also attained with the proposed approach. The validation of the proposed h-CSLQFL controller has been done on a hardware set up.

The influence of household characteristics on the purchase of clean cars. The case of Spain

This paper determines the socioeconomic characteristics of Spanish households that use clean cars, with the aim of identifying how these characteristics influence the market penetration of these vehicles. This study is one of the few in the literature that analyses the characteristics of car users based on a broad sample of data, that is representative of 11.5 million households. The results allow us to identify socioeconomic challenges and opportunities regarding the goal of replacing combustion vehicles with clean vehicles. We estimate a logit model finding that high-income households are 29.3% more likely to use a clean vehicle than medium–low-income households. On the contrary, the gender and age of the household’s main breadwinner present opportunities: if he is a male, it is more likely to use clean vehicles than if she is a woman, and households whose main breadwinner is over 55 or under 30 are more likely to use it. These results provide guidelines for a better design of public policies aimed at decarbonizing the transport sector through the replacement of conventional vehicles by clean ones. To do so it is important to consider the features of the social reality in which that objective is to be achieved.

Barriers in Replacement of Conventional Vehicles by Electric Vehicles in India

Electric vehicles are an emerging and evolving technology that brings in remarkable environmental gains over conventional vehicles, contributing significantly towards a decrease in fossil fuel dependence. However, infiltrating into the existing automobile market requires huge investment in charging facilities and intricate planning to make it more approachable to the consumers. Identifying the crucial challenges and finding a solution has been a major hurdle to the manufacturers. While various non-government agencies and government policies are urging both consumers and manufacturers to adopt electric mobility, many industries remain unguided. The paper aims to identify, study, and rank 12 of these influential challenges faced by the manufacturers based on their impact on enhancing the manufacturing and sales of electric vehicles in India using the triangular fuzzy number (TFN) method. Results obtained reveal that inadequate charging infrastructure is one of the biggest hurdles.

The menace and mitigation of air pollution in the built environment: A review

Air pollution has become one of the leading causes of death globally. This paper investigates the causes as well as sources of air pollution in the indoor and outdoor environment. It identifies anthropogenic activities related such as transportation and other activities involving the combustion of fossil fuel as the major causes of air pollution. The several and diverse health implications of air pollution were highlighted. The dangerous nature of carbon monoxide was x-rayed and the common indoor and outdoor sources were discussed. The risks of carbon monoxide poisoning from generator fumes and vehicle exhaust were clearly enumerated. Particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5 and ultra fine PM) were clearly shown to be the major casue of chronic and fatal respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Indoor air quality, which is usually overlooked was brought to the fore and shown to be worse than outdoor air quaility in some cases, especially where ventilation is poor. The inextricable link between air pollution and climate change was also established. Mitigative measure such as policies/acts, replacement of fossil fuel with solar PVs, replacement of conventional vehicles with electric vehicles and establishment of urban forests were discussed. Frequent and evenly distributed air quality monitoring, especially using android-enabled portable devices was broached. Besides, policies and other global approaches, individuals must adopt personal protective measures to protect themselves from the menace of air pollution.

Analysis of Green Self Identity and Environment Concern on Adopt Electric Vehicle Intention with Perception of EV and Subjective Norm as Mediation Variables

The issue of environmental damage often arises in recent years, as a result of continuous and uncontrolled emission of harmful atmospheric pollutants. through various human activities. The consumption of fossil fuels by industry as well as the transportation system is considered to be the main reason, from which several studies have paid considerable attention to the pollution caused by vehicles. As indicated by the statistics of the International Energy Agency (IEA), a recent estimate of the number of one million vehicles used worldwide, with daily consumption of about 60 million barrels per day (nearly 70% of total oil production); nearly 36 million barrels of daily oil consumption is attributed to private vehicles, which cause the emission of 14 million tons of carbon dioxide. As a result, the replacement of conventional vehicles with renewable energy vehicles can be considered as a promising solution. In this regard, electric vehicles are expected to reduce negative effects on the environment and also help conserve scarce non-renewable fuel reserves throughout the life cycle. Electric Vehicles are considered an effective alternative to sustaining transportation through the reduction of oil dependence and subsequent air pollution, leading to significant health and environmental benefits. The purpose of this study is to analyze consumer behavior towards the intention to adopt an electric vehicle by involving the variables of Green Self Identity, Environment Concern, Perception of Electric Vehicle, and Subjective Norms. With 250 respondents spread across Indonesia and using the SmartPLS software, the results of a partial analysis of Green Self Identity proved to have an effect on Environment Concern. Meanwhile, Environment Concern was proven to affect Perception of EV and Subjective Norms, but did not affect Adoption Intention. For the indirect effect analysis, Perception of EV and Subjective Norms variables proved to be mediating variables between Environment Concern and Adoption Intention.

Mitigating urban heat island effect and carbon dioxide emissions through different mobility concepts: Comparison of conventional vehicles with electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles and public transportation

Research has shown, that the replacement of conventional vehicles (CVs) by electric vehicles (EVs) can reduce urban heat island intensity (UHII). This leads not only to a more comfortable climate during summer but also to a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from the vehicles themselves and to a reduction in the need for air conditioning (AC) and associated emissions. The current study examines to what extent a range of different mobility concepts, can lead to a reduction in urban heat island intensity and carbon dioxide emissions in the city of Beijing, China. For this purpose, the impact that electric vehicles fuelled with the average energy mix, hydrogen vehicles (HyVs) fuelled with hydrogen from electrolysis from the regular energy mix, HyVs fuelled with hydrogen produced through wind power, energy efficient CVs, EVs fuelled with wind power and energy efficient metro light railway (metro) travel have on summer heat island intensity (SHII) and CO2-emissions is analysed. The lowest SHII mitigation effect was found for a replacement of CVs with fuel efficient diesel cars while hydrogen cars that are fuelled with hydrogen generated from the average electricity mix even leads to higher SHII and higher CO2 emissions. The largest SHII mitigation effect was found for a scenario where conventional vehicles are replaced with energy efficient metro travel. The CO2 saving potential is highest for EVs which are powered with electricity generated from wind turbines, closely followed by HyVs that are fuelled with hydrogen generated from electrolysis of water using wind electricity.The paper helps policymakers and consumers to make the right choices when it comes to environmentally friendly mobility options.

Optimal Scheduling of Micro Grid for Plug-In Electrical Vehicle

Owing to several advantages of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) like less noise, emission less, good efficiency and the reduced cost has attention to the governments, researchers and manufactures in recent time. The Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) plays a vital role in replacement of conventional vehicles in future, because of penetration of renewable energy resources in conventional generation. The modernized of micro grid is happening due to usage of clean energy for EV charging. The cost of electric vehicle charging is challenging issue in the development of plug-in electric vehicle. The coordination between renewable generation and conventional generation is very much needed in near future. The dynamic nature of renewable energy resources causes frequent interrupts in electric vehicle charging. The problem of nonlinear power generation with renewable resources is overcome by electric vehicle battery storage system which enables the EV battery to charge during low demand period and gets discharged into the micro grid during high demand periods. This paper developed an optimal schedule for stationary Plug-in Electric Vehicle charging in operation with micro grid. The obtained optimal schedule provides balance between active and reactive power in generation and load as well. The integration of renewable energy resources is achieved through solar, wind in Vehicle-2-Grid (V2G) approach which is used to safeguard to renewable energy resources by store additional energy produced during peak load period and feeding back to the micro grid during low load period. As a result the stable operation of the micro grid and EV charging with low cost is achieved in this paper.

Hidden benefits of electric vehicles for addressing climate change.

There is an increasingly hot debate on whether the replacement of conventional vehicles (CVs) by electric vehicles (EVs) should be delayed or accelerated since EVs require higher cost and cause more pollution than CVs in the manufacturing process. Here we reveal two hidden benefits of EVs for addressing climate change to support the imperative acceleration of replacing CVs with EVs. As EVs emit much less heat than CVs within the same mileage, the replacement can mitigate urban heat island effect (UHIE) to reduce the energy consumption of air conditioners, benefitting local and global climates. To demonstrate these effects brought by the replacement of CVs by EVs, we take Beijing, China, as an example. EVs emit only 19.8% of the total heat emitted by CVs per mile. The replacement of CVs by EVs in 2012 could have mitigated the summer heat island intensity (HII) by about 0.94°C, reduced the amount of electricity consumed daily by air conditioners in buildings by 14.44 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) and reduced daily CO2 emissions by 10,686 tonnes.

Numerical analysis of the benefits achievable by after-market mild hybridisation of conventional cars

It is recognised worldwide how hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) currently represents a key technology to reduce automotive fuel consumption and related emissions. Nevertheless, since HEV market share is still insufficient to produce a significant impact on global energy consumption, also due to the recent global financial crisis, a substantial replacement of conventional vehicles is unlikely to occur in a short time. Therefore, a solution is proposed in this paper, consisting of a kit for after-market mild solar hybridisation of conventional vehicles. The mild hybridisation is obtained by replacing original rear wheels by in-wheel motors, on one hand, and, on the other, by adding a photovoltaic (PV) panel, a second battery pack and a dedicated control unit. The substantial benefits obtainable in terms of fuel consumption are evaluated by running a numerical analysis on different kit designs and original conventional cars converted via the kit.
