Efficient Catalytic Elimination of Toxic Volatile Organic Compounds via Advanced Oxidation Process Wet Scrubbing with Bifunctional Cobalt Sulfide/Activated Carbon Catalysts.

Advanced oxidation process (AOP) wet scrubber is a powerful and clean technology for organic pollutant treatment but still presents great challenges in removing the highly toxic and hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we elaborately designed a bifunctional cobalt sulfide (CoS2)/activated carbon (AC) catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient toxic VOC removal in an AOP wet scrubber. By combining the excellent VOC adsorption capacity of AC with the highly efficient PMS activation activity of CoS2, CoS2/AC can rapidly capture VOCs from the gas phase to proceed with the SO4•- and HO• radical-induced oxidation reaction. More than 90% of aromatic VOCs were removed over a wide pH range (3-11) with low Co ion leaching (0.19 mg/L). The electron-rich sulfur vacancies and low-valence Co species were the main active sites for PMS activation. SO4•- was mainly responsible for the initial oxidation of VOCs, while HO• and O2 acted in the subsequent ring-opening and mineralization processes of intermediates. No gaseous intermediates from VOC oxidation were detected, and the highly toxic liquid intermediates like benzene were also greatly decreased, thus effectively reducing the health toxicity associated with byproduct emissions. This work provided a comprehensive understanding of the deep oxidation of VOCs via AOP wet scrubber, significantly accelerating its application in environmental remediation.

Photocatalytic removal of VOCs on TiO2 nanotube layers. Effect of layer thickness and humidity

The current work is focused on the influence of TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layer thickness, texture properties and chemical nature of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the efficiency of their photocatalytic oxidative removal. Attention was also given to the evaluation of the degree of mineralisation and the influence of air humidity. The fabricated TNT layers have a thickness from 2to13 μm, TiO2 mass from 0.27 to 1.15 mg cm−2, tube diameter of 108 ± 17 nm and porosity of 74 ± 5 %. Values of areal SBET determined from Kr adsorption are higher than the inner surface area of the TNT layer calculated from morphology parameters, this suggests the rough nature of the inner surface of nanotubes. Acetaldehyde was more easily degraded in comparison to hexane which was explained by a simpler chemical structure. The degree of acetaldehyde mineralisation was almost 100 %, suggesting the formation of no intermediates, analysis confirmed negligible formation of formaldehyde. In contrast, degree of hexane mineralisation was lower, 80 %. An increase in humidity has a negative effect on the photocatalytic performance; this effect is more significant for non-polar hexane compared to water-miscible acetaldehyde. The conversion of hexane and absorptance of the TNT layer at 365 nm increase similarly with increasing thickness. Hexane conversion increases significantly up to a layer thickness of about 4 μm where more than 80 % of incident light is absorbed. The simultaneous degradation of four pollutants (acetaldehyde, acetone, heptane and toluene) results in the highest degradation rate of acetaldehyde and the lowest for heptane, this was attributed to their different solubility in water as well as to their different adsorption.

Micro- and Mesoporous Structural Effects of Beta Zeolites for Volatile Organic Compound Sorption.

To fully exploit pore engineering in the design of more efficient zeolite adsorbents for volatile organic compound (VOC) treatment, the roles of meso- and micropores need to be clarified to provide the theoretical basis and feasible measures. In this work, the three VOC sorption properties of conventional and hierarchical porous beta zeolites were comparatively investigated to study the roles of meso- and micropores. There is a division of functions between micro- and mesopores, with micropores being the main VOC adsorption sites and mesopores greatly enhancing VOC diffusion and adsorbent reusability. On the one hand, micropores should be preserved as much as possible because obtaining mesopores by sacrificing micropores (i.e., alkali treatment) results in 28-60% decreases in adsorption capacities. On the other hand, mesopore introduction is highly desirable, which results in an enhancement of VOC intraparticle diffusion rates by 1.3-2.3 times (at the VOC concentration of 600 ppm) and chlorobenzene adsorption capacity on the 20th cycle increasing from 78% of the initial value to 89 and 93%. The findings may provide valuable information about zeolite-based adsorbents for adsorption removal or recovery of VOCs.

Experimental and theoretical studies on effective synergistic low-temperature removal of NO and typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from flue gas based on Cu@VWTi catalyst

The transition metal-modified VWTi structural catalysts hold great promise for simultaneously removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial flue gases. A series of Cu@VWTi catalysts were prepared to investigate their synergistic low-temperature removal performance towards NO and typical VOCs, including toluene, benzene, chlorobenzene (CB), p-chlorotoluene (p-CT), and dichloromethane (DCM). The copper-enhanced samples prepared via ultrasound-assisted impregnation exhibited irregular globular and varying crystallinity. The catalysts displayed a typical anatase crystal structure with high TiO2 content or high dispersion of V and W species along with a certain adjustment effect on the morphology. Various controlling factors affecting the synergistic removal of NO and VOCs were evaluated. It was observed that the presence of VOCs in flue gas has weak impact on NO removal, except for the waste incineration using the Cu@VWTi catalyst. However, a high initial NO concentration had an adverse effect on VOCs removal. Impressively, the optimized copper-doped catalyst (5wt% Cu loaded of smelting plant and coal-fired power plant used catalyst) exhibited excellent performance for p-CT, toluene and DCM removal of 95.0%, 99.6% and 100% at 300 °C, respectively. The toluene and p-CT conversion efficiencies were highest over the catalyst used in the smelting plant after Cu loading, surpassing the benzene conversion efficiency. Cu@VWTi demonstrated excellent performance for p-CT, toluene, and DCM removal at 250 °C. Although 5wt% Cu loading on the catalysts significantly enhanced the stability and anti-jamming of VOCs removal, as well as their tolerance to both SO2 and water vapor. The enhanced mechanism of Cu decoration attributed to the enhanced intensity of acid sites and the stable relative proportion of Oads/Olatt species in the used 5% Cu loaded catalyst due to the redox cycles of Cu and V species. Compared with Brønsted acid, which primarily adsorbs NH4+, Lewis acid mainly adsorbs gas phase acid and forms coordinated NH3 in gas phase. The bonding between toluene and the Cu site was enhanced with an adsorption energy of -130.9 kJ·mol-1, as well as the cracking adsorption of the CH2Cl2 on the Ti site with a bonding energy of -436.7 kJ·mol-1, both indicating strong chemical adsorption. The first step of dechlorination and demethylation was thermodynamically and kinetically favorable for DCM and toluene decomposition.

Cooperative and Bifunctional Adsorbent-Catalyst Materials for In-situ VOCs Capture-Conversion.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes and are major components of air pollution that significantly deteriorate air quality and seriously affect human health. Different types of metals, metal oxides, mixed-metal oxides, polymers, activated carbons, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and mixed-matrixed materials have been developed and used as adsorbent or catalyst for diversified VOCs detection, removal, and destruction. In this comprehensive review, we first discuss the general classification of VOCs removal materials and processes and outline the historical development of bifunctional and cooperative adsorbent-catalyst materials for the removal of VOCs from air. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to design of strategies for cooperative adsorbent-catalyst materials, along with detailed discussions on the latest advances on these bifunctional materials, reaction mechanisms, long-term stability, and regeneration for VOCs removal processes. Finally, challenges and future opportunities for the environmental implementation of these bifunctional materials are identified and outlined with the intent of providing insightful guidance on the design and fabrication of more efficient materials and systems for VOCs removal in the future.

Tackling the challenge of efficient VOCs removal across varied molecular sizes over zeolite adsorbent under humid conditions

Efficient removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with different molecular sizes over a single zeolite remains a great challenge, especially under humid conditions. Here, we introduced an innovative base leaching strategy to construct hierarchical pores within high-silica MFI zeolite on premise of maintaining a similar high micropore volume. The key points were the introduction of Al3+ and B3+ as pore directing agents into the base solution and meticulous regulation of the acid washing process. Because of the introduction of mesopores, the adsorption capacities for m-xylene increased by 16.1 times compared to that on conventional MFI adsorbent. Meanwhile, it exhibited comparable adsorption capacities for smaller VOCs, including dichloromethane and toluene. The adsorption capacities for ethanol showed a notable increase, accompanied by a decrease in the desorption temperature. This was attributed to the generation of additional silanol adsorption sites, as confirmed by 1H MAS NMR and in situ FT-IR spectra. Moreover, the optimal adsorbent presented good regeneration performance throughout the four dynamic adsorption–desorption cycling tests for all VOCs.

Direct activation and hydrophobic modification of biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon for toluene adsorption under high humidity

Hierarchical porous starch-based carbon (PSC) with tunable pore structure (surface area 1974 ∼ 2721 m2/g and pore volume 0.80 ∼ 1.74 cm3/g) was prepared through direct activation. Due to its high surface area and large pore volume, PSC shows great potential for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal. Water vapor commonly exists along with VOCs and the competitive adsorption between VOCs and water vapor would significantly restrict the VOCs adsorption of PSC under high humidity. To address this issue, hydrophobic porous starch-based carbon composite (PSCC) was also prepared by physically mixing PSC with poly-divinylbenzene (PDVB) for toluene adsorption under high humidity to suppress the influence of water vapor. As relative humidity increased from 0 % to 80 %, the toluene adsorption capacity of PSC-2 decreased by 46 % while PSCC only experienced a decrease of 22 %. PSCC could also maintain its toluene adsorption performance (close to 100 %) after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Theoretical computations were also proved that the addition of PDVB inhibits water vapor adsorption and promotes its desorption, thereby enhancing the toluene adsorption of PSCC under high humidity. This work provides a controllable preparation and facile modification of porous carbon to improve its toluene adsorption under high humidity, offering a great application prospect for VOCs removal.

Microstructure regulation and enhanced VOC removal performance of carbon aerogels by surface carbon nanotube grown

Carbon aerogels were newly employed in adsorption for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as an emerging material. In contrast, the microstructure and high carbon consumption are the primary factors restricting their application scenarios. Carbon nanotubes, recognized for their controllable cylindrical hollow structure and hydrophobic walls, generally possess higher adsorption capacities than typical carbon adsorbents. In this study, carbon nanotubes were grown on the surface of carbon aerogels using the chemical vapor deposition method by controlling different deposition conditions. The results showed that the modified samples displayed the maximum adsorption capacity of 145.0 mg/g and 178.3 mg/g for toluene and 1,2- dichlorobenzene, respectively. After ten regeneration cycles, the performance decreased by 7.9 % and 5.6 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the carbon replenishment was about 0.2 g/g, which is an excellent complement for carbon consumption. Various characterization patterns showed that deposition temperature was reflected in its deposition rate, deposition times influenced the formation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and deposition concentration affected the length of carbon nanotubes. This study offers valuable insight into the growth patterns of carbon nanotubes and the microscale regulation of carbon material surfaces, and this method is expected to be an effective means of carbon replenishment, carbon addition to carbon-poor materials, and enhancement of VOCs removal performance, and the growth mechanisms investigated are instructive for practical applications.

Efficacious destruction of typical aromatic hydrocarbons over CoMn/Ni foam monolithic catalysts with boosted activity and water resistance

Developing cost-effective monolith catalyst with superior low-temperature activity is critical for oxidative efficacious removal of industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the complexity of the industrial flue gas conditions demands the need for high moisture tolerance, which is challenging. Herein, CoMn–Metal Organic Framework (CoMn–MOF) was in situ grown on Ni foam (NiF) at room temperature to synthesize the cost-effective monolith catalyst. The optimized catalyst, Co1Mn1/NiF, exhibited excellent performance in toluene oxidation (T90 = 239 °C) due to the substitution of manganese into the cobalt lattice. This substitution weakened the Co–O bond strength, creating more oxygen vacancies and increasing the active oxygen species content. Additionally, experimentally and computationally evidence revealed that the mutual inhibiting effect of three typical aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene and m–xylene) over the Co1Mn1/NiF catalyst was attributed to the competitive adsorption occurring on the active site. Furthermore, the Co1Mn1/NiF catalyst also presents outstanding water resistance, particularly at a concentration of 3 vol%, where the activity is even enhanced. This was attributed to the lower water adsorption and dissociation energy derived from the interaction between the bimetals. Results demonstrate that the dissociation of water vapor enables more reactive oxygen species to participate in the reaction which reduces the formation of intermediates and facilitates the reaction. This investigation provides new insights into the preparation of oxygen vacancy–rich monolith catalysts with high water resistance for practical applications.

Selective dissolution of micro-spherical Ca-Mn mixed oxides for efficient propane oxidation

The improvement of catalytic efficiency is of great significance to the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a class of key air pollutants leading to ground-level ozone pollution. Herein, a series of micro-spherical Ca-Mn mixed oxides (CaxMnyOz), namely CaMn3O6, Ca2Mn3O8 and CaMnO3, were prepared by a two-step precipitation method, and defects were constructed on which by selective dissolution to enhance the low-temperature catalytic performance in the oxidation of propane (C3H8) as a representative short-chain alkane VOCs. The synthesized CaxMnyOz oxides demonstrated drastically different response to the dissolution modification initiated by acid treatment. Specifically, after acid dissolution, while CaMn3O6 and Ca2Mn3O8 maintained largely their original structures, the perovskite-type CaMnO3 underwent lattice rearrangement and was transformed into γ-MnO2-like product with only a tiny amount of Ca. In C3H8 oxidation, the catalytic performance of CaMnO3 was significantly improved after selective dissolution, as indicated by a significant decrease of T90, i.e. the temperature to achieve 90% C3H8 conversion, from 455 °C to 240 °C. Mechanistic investigation by in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed that selective dissolution led to higher Mn4+ concentrations and more oxygen vacancies on the oxide surfaces, thus facilitated electron transfer and O2 activation in C3H8 oxidation reactions. This study paves a new path for the design of cost-effective oxide catalysts toward the abatement of short-chain alkane VOCs.

Synchronous removal of gaseous toluene and benzene and degradation process shifts in microbial fuel cell-biotrickling filter system

Illustrating the biodegradation processes of multi-component volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will expedite the implication of biotechnology in purifying industrial exhaust. Here, performance shifts of microbial fuel cell and biotrickling filter combined system (MFC-BTF) are investigated for removing single and dual components of toluene and benzene. Synchronous removal of toluene (95 %) and benzene (97 %) are achieved by MFC-BTF accompanied with the output current of 0.41 mA. Elevated content of extracellular polymeric substance facilitates the mass transfer of benzene with the presence of toluene. Strains of Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi contribute to the removal of dual components VOCs. Empty bed reaction time and the VOCs concentration are the important factors influencing their dissolution in the system. The biodegradation of toluene and benzene proceeds with 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde and o-hydroxybenzoic acid as the main intermediates. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of multi-component VOCs removal by MFC-BTF and guide the system design, optimization, and scale-up.

Microalgal biochar assisted simultaneous removal of particulate matter, formaldehyde, and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC's) from indoor air

Biochar-based materials for air treatment have gained significant attention for removing health-detrimental volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM) in indoor air settings. However, high turnaround time, multiple pretreatment processes involved, and high pore size and low surface area (>10 μm, <100 m2 g−1) of lignocellulosic feedstocks demand alternative biochar feedstock material. Considering this, we designed a simple first-of-its-kind indoor air scrubbing material using diatoms-enriched microalgae biochar. In the present study, the microalgae were cultivated on waste anaerobic digestate (biogas slurry) and were pyrolyzed at three different temperatures: 300 °C (BC300), 500 °C (BC500), and 700 °C (BC700). The BC500 and BC700 showed the highest removal efficiencies (99 %) for total volatile organic carbons (TVOCs) and formaldehyde (HCHO) at concentrations of 1.22 mg m−3 HCHO and 8.57 mg m−3 TVOC compared to 50% efficiency obtained with commercially available surgical, cloth, and N95 masks. The biochar obtained showed a high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 238 m2 g−1 (BC500) and 480 m2 g−1 (BC700) and an average pore size of 9–11 nm due to the mesoporous characteristic of diatom frustules. The comparatively poor performance of BC300 was due to lower surface area (150 m2 g−1) arising from incomplete organic removal, as evidenced by FESEM-EDX and FTIR. The high removal efficiencies in BC500 and BC700 were also attributed to the presence of reactive functional groups such as –OH and R–NH2. Concurrently, the average particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1) removal efficiency for BC500 and BC 700 ranged between 66 and 82.69 %. The PM removal performance of BC500 and BC700 was lower (15–20%) than commercially available masks. Overall, the present study highlights the importance of diatoms (reactive Si) present inside the pores of microalgal biochar for enhanced removal of PM, TVOCs, and HCHO at temperatures above 500 °C. This complete approach signifies a step towards establishing a self-sustainable and circular process characterized by minimal waste generation for indoor air treatment.

Nonthermal plasma coupled with Mn/N-doped carbon catalysts for highly efficient removal of toluene

In order to ensure the excellent performance of a nonthermal plasma (NTP)-catalysis system, a highly efficient catalyst is generally required. In this study, nitrogen-enriched hollow hybrid carbon (N-C) catalysts were designed, synthesized through facile pyrolysis of a zeolitic imidazolate framework precursor, and used as a support on which to disperse Mn species. Notably, the coupling of NTP with the Mn/N-C catalysts resulted in strong activity. Mn loading of 6 % was found to remove almost all toluene (98 % efficiency) and to have COx selectivity (82.1 %) when the specific energy density (SED) value was 252 J·L−1; when the SED value was 102 J·L−1, the energy yield was 10.6 g·kWh−1. The performances of the developed Mn/N-C catalysts were related to their highly dispersed nature and strong ability to activate oxygen and dissociate O3. Hereafter, the toluene decomposition pathway is described. The present findings demonstrate the potential applications of porous N-C-supported metal oxide catalysts in the removal of volatile organic compounds through a catalyzed NTP process.

Hypercrosslinked Hydrogel Composite Membranes Targeted for Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds via Selective Solution-Diffusion in Membrane Distillation.

Membrane distillation (MD) has attracted considerable interest in hypersaline wastewater treatment. However, its practicability is severely impeded by the ineffective interception of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which seriously affects the product water quality. Herein, a hypercrosslinked alginate (Alg)/aluminum (Al) hydrogel composite membrane is facilely fabricated via Alg pregel formation and ionic crosslinking for efficient VOC interception. The obtained MD membrane shows a sufficient phenol rejection of 99.52% at the phenol concentration of 100 ppm, which is the highest rejection among the reported MD membranes. Moreover, the hydrogel composite membrane maintains a high phenol interception (>99%), regardless of the feed temperature, initial phenol concentration, and operating time. Diffusion experiments and molecular dynamics simulation verify that the selective diffusion is the dominant mechanism for VOCs-water separation. Phenol experiences a higher energy barrier to pass through the dense hydrogel layer compared to water molecules as the stronger interaction between phenol-Alg compared with water-Alg. Benefited from the dense and hydratable Alg/Al hydrogel layer, the composite membrane also exhibits robust resistance to wetting and fouling during long-term operation. The superior VOCs removal efficiency and excellent durability endow the hydrogel composite membrane with a promising application for treating complex wastewater containing both volatile and nonvolatile contaminants.

Data-driven autonomous operation of VOCs removal system

Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air has been an important issue in many industrial fields. Traditionally, the operation of VOCs removal systems has relied on fixed operating conditions determined by domain experts based on their expertise and intuition. In practice, this manual operation cannot respond immediately to changes in the system environment. To facilitate the autonomous operation of the system, the operating conditions should be optimized properly in real time to adapt to the changes in the system environment. Recently, optimization frameworks have been widely applied to real-world industrial systems across various domains using different approaches. The primary motivation for this study is the effective implementation of an optimization framework targeting a VOCs removal system. In this paper, we present a data-driven autonomous operation method for optimizing the operating conditions of a VOCs removal system to enhance the overall performance. An optimization problem is formulated with the decision variables denoting the parameters associated with the operating condition, the environmental variables representing the measurements for the system environment, the constraints specifying the control ranges of the parameters, and the objective function representing the system performance as determined by the operating conditions and environment. Using the previous operation data from the system, a neural network is trained to model the system performance as a function of the decision and environmental variables to approximate the objective function. For the current state of the system environment, the optimal operating condition is derived by solving the optimization problem. A case study of a targeted VOCs removal system demonstrates that the proposed method effectively optimizes the operating conditions for improved system performance without intervention from domain experts.

A comprehensive review on removal of VOCs from air using fly ash as an adsorbent

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) play a critical role in the atmosphere and are produced from biogenic and anthropogenic sources. These chemicals have serious health consequences for humans. Among many types of industrial waste available, Coal Fly Ash (CFA) are mostly produced by coal- fired power plants with the ability to capture VOCs from the air. The use of an inexpensive, high-performance electrospun nanofiber membrane to filter out airborne impurities. Adsorption is thought to be the best approach out of all of them due to its convenience, ease of usage, and easy-to-understand design. This review article covers the procedure, and environmental effects of employing fly ash for the adsorption of VOCs. The main concerns with fly ash disposal are the need for massive land areas for landfills and the harmful effects and groundwater pollution caused by the accumulation of heavy metals. Additionally, the methods for overcoming the benefits of using fly ash are also examined.

Simultaneous removal of NOx and VOCs by Si doping CeO2 based catalysts: An acidity and redox properties balance strategy

The synergetic catalytic removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhibits huge potentials in reducing cost with high efficiency in the field of environmental catalysis, the key point is to adjust the balance of acidity and oxidizability over one catalyst. Herein, we develop a modifited CeO2-based catalyst by doping Si to balance acidity and redox properties. Consequently, the mosted optimizted Si-doped CeO2 catalyst showed superior synergistic removal of NOx and toluene compared to pure CeO2. It was demonstrated that Si-doped CeO2 improved markedly the number of acidic sites, increased the Ce3+ concentration, and adjusted the adsorption interaction between catalyst and NH3/toluene. These led to a wider temperature window of 300–375 °C for the simultaneous removal of NOx and toluene. It is believed that this work provides a simple strategy to balance acidity and redox properties and offers novel insights for multi-pollutant removal catalyst design.

Light-induced in-situ transformation from MOF to construct heterostructured Co3O4/Co catalyst for efficient photothermal catalytic oxidation

The construction of hybrid nanocatalysts with enhanced active surfaces/interfaces is crucial for the catalytic oxidative removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we report an in-situ conversion approach to synthesize a heterostructured Co3O4/Co catalyst (Co@NC-0.5) for efficient photothermal catalytic oxidation of acetone. The catalysts were prepared by pyrolyzing a mixture of ZIF-67 and melamine. The exposed cobalt species underwent in-situ oxidation to form a Co3O4/Co heterostructure under photothermal conditions. This unique catalyst structure exhibited over 90% conversion within 16 minutes under full solar spectrum irradiation and excellent reusability with continuous maintenance of 100% acetone conversion rate after nine cycles performance tests. Notably, its specific mass activity under thermocatalytic conditions was 2.13 times higher than that of Co3O4. Our work provides a facile and effective strategy for developing highly active and durable non-precious metal catalysts suitable for various photothermal catalytic reactions.

Unveiling the confinement and interface effect on low temperature degradation of toluene over mesoporous zeolite encapsulated Pt-CeO2 catalyst

The efficient degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low temperatures is urgently needed due to the serious environmental and health hazards they pose. While precious metal-based catalysts offer excellent performance, their application is limited by high-temperature sintering and aggregation. Therefore, inhibiting the migration and aggregation of precious metals during the reaction process can effectively improve their utilization and alleviate catalyst deactivation. In this study, a novel encapsulated catalyst (Pt-CeO@meso-S1) containing Pt-CeO2 interfaces was constructed using mesoporous-rich zeolite as a shell layer and applied to the catalytic oxidation of toluene. The introduction of CeO2 constructed a Pt-CeO2 active interface that promoted the low-temperature degradation of toluene, achieving complete oxidation of toluene at 160 ℃. The crystalline phase transition strategy enhanced the specific surface area, improving the dispersion of platinum and facilitating the construction of the Pt-CeO2 interface. The zeolite shell and mesoporous pores effectively confined/stabilized the Pt-CeO2 active components and inhibited platinum sintering, resulting in outstanding water resistance and high-temperature stability. DFT calculations demonstrated that the presence of the Pt-CeO2 active interfaces reduced oxygen vacancy formation energy and facilitated gas-phase oxygen activation. DFT calculations demonstrated that the presence of the Pt-CeO2 active interfaces reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy and boosts the activation of gas-phase oxygen. The Mars-van-Krevelen (MvK) mechanism governing toluene degradation over Pt-CeO2@meso-S1 was revealed by in situ DRIFTS. This work provides a promising candidate for industrial high-performance catalytic removal of VOCs at low temperatures.
