Exploring sex differences in collaborative virtual environments for participation equality and user experience

Communication technology plays a crucial role in facilitating remote collaborative work. This study investigated sex differences in Perceived Participation Equality and User Experience across different communication formats, i.e., face-to-face communication, conventional video conferences, and Virtual Reality (VR). An empirical study was conducted involving 15 groups, each comprising three participants, who engaged in a decision-making task. A research model was developed to evaluate the interplay between perceived participation equality, empathy, and immersion. This model was employed across three communication conditions and included both male and female participants. These findings on sex differences in user experience could help create a connected, cohesive, and productive remote collaborative work environment.

Viewpoint-sharing method with reduced motion sickness in object-based VR/AR collaborative virtual environment

We propose a viewpoint-sharing method with reduced motion sickness in an object-based remote collaborative virtual environment (CVE). The method is designed with an assumption of asymmetric, object-based CVE where collaborators use non-homogeneous devices, such as immersive virtual reality head-mounted display (VR HMD) and tablet-based augmented reality (AR), and simultaneously interact with 3D virtual objects. Therefore, collaborators interact with different interfaces such as virtual reality (VR) users relying on controllers for virtual locomotion and object manipulation, while AR users perform physical locomotion and multi-touch input for object manipulation. The proposed viewpoint-sharing method allows both users to observe and manipulate the objects in interest from the shared point of view, enabling participants to interact with the objects without the need for virtual/physical locomotion. While viewpoint-sharing, instead of changing point of view, the proposed method performs seamless object transformation to provide a shared point of view, reducing motion sickness and associated discomfort. From our user experiment, the viewpoint-share condition resulted in a 35.47% faster task completion time than the baseline condition which is without proposed viewpoint-sharing. The advantage of viewpoint-sharing regarding system usability was significant, while task workloads were similar in the baseline and viewpoint-sharing conditions. We expect that the proposed viewpoint-sharing method allows users to quickly, efficiently, and collaboratively communicate in an object-based CVE, and represents a step forward in the development of effective remote, asymmetric CVE.

Effects of Reward Schedule and Avatar Visibility on Joint Agency during VR Collaboration.

Joint agency, a group-level sense of agency, has been studied as an essential social cognitive element while engaging in collaborative tasks. The joint agency has been actively investigated in diverse contexts (e.g., performance, reward schedules, and predictability), yet the studies were mostly conducted in traditional 2D computer environments. Since virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology for remote collaboration, we aimed to probe the effects of traditional reward schedule factors along with novel VR features (i.e., avatar visibility) on joint agency during remote collaboration. In this study, we implemented an experiment based on a card-matching game to test the effects of the reward schedule (fair or equal) and the counterpart's avatar hand visibility (absent or present) on the sense of joint agency. The results showed that participants felt a higher sense of joint agency when the reward was distributed equally regardless of the individual performance and when the counterpart's avatar hand was present. Moreover, the effects of reward schedule and avatar hand visibility interacted, with a bigger amount of deficit for the absent avatar hand when the reward was distributed differentially according to performance. Interestingly, the sense of joint agency was strongly correlated to the level of collaborative performance, as well as to perceptions of other social cognitive factors, including cooperativeness, reward fairness, and social presence. These results contribute to the understanding of joint agency perceptions during VR collaboration and provide design guidelines for remote collaborative tasks and environments for users' optimal social experience and performance.

Architectural design creativity in Multi-User Virtual Environment: A comparative analysis between remote collaboration media

Previous studies have argued that a Multi-User Virtual Environment has the potential to foster creative collaboration, but empirical studies that examine this claim are rare. With a focus on architectural design, this study has investigated the affordance of Multi-User Virtual Environment for the production of novel and appropriate solutions in remote collaborative environments. Forty-four participants produced design solutions using Multi-User Virtual Environment and online sketching in remote collaboration. Four expert-judges assessed the novelty and appropriateness of the collaborative results, following the Consensual Assessment Technique. The results analyzed by paired samples T-test indicated that in remote collaboration, Multi-User Virtual Environment’s scores for both novelty and appropriateness were partially higher than those of online sketching. In remote collaboration, the immersion by avatars and co-presence with others in Multi-User Virtual Environment were perhaps more effective due to explicit communication cues used to share spatial information and collaborative procedure, compared to the two-dimensional, static representation of online sketching.

Dynamic reconfiguration in multigroup multicast routing under uncertainty

Motivated by high quality multimedia and remote collaborative environments, we solve the problem of multigroup multicast routing with a~number of features important for real-world deployment of the interactive media technologies. Based on the ant colony optimization metaheuristic, our algorithm is the first to work with uncertain knowledge of underlying network capabilities and support on-the-fly media transcoding inside the multicast tree. New contributions of this work are described next. We present two extensions of the algorithm, which improve quality of the solution. We introduce an~integrated approach to solution of the problem, which is effective for both original solving from scratch as well as for new dynamic reconfiguration of multicast tree, where minimum perturbation of existing solution is desired. Experiments show that our algorithm is not only successful in maintaining existing communication with low number of unnecessary disruptions, but also capable of keeping the multicast trees efficient.

RECT: A Cloud-Based Learning Tool for Graduate Software Engineering Practice Courses With Remote Tutor Support

Nowadays, remote collaborative learning tools for computer science education mostly emphasize providing learning resources and realizing virtual collaborative learning environment for students. Many people in this field tend to have their mind fixed on the process improvement of such a collaboration as a whole, while few notice that individuals may have different roles and impacts on this type of teamwork. There usually is a “supervisor” on the team, who offers support to all members in the collaborative learning environment. However, such support may not always be as accessible as students demand it to be. Therefore, this paper describes a cloud-based tool to support software engineering practice courses in collaboration with remote tutors. This system utilizes a cloud storage platform to provide sharing of multimedia study materials and a better management of project developing cycles. A remote collaborative component called the Virtual Debug Laboratory is designed to improve and share students’ debugging experience in the same team. The most innovative feature of this system is that it amplifies the role of tutoring in remote collaborative learning environments so that tutors can, in real time, assist students in debugging during actual project developing and demonstrate step by step to the students the process of debugging. The results of the analyzed data regarding the use of this system indicate that the system can potentially enhance students’ abilities in project developing and debugging in software engineering practice courses. It is our hope that these preliminary data can provide a future reference for the software education community.

Collaborative learning in multi-user virtual environments

Multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) have captured the attention and interest of educators as remote collaborative learning environments due to their immersion, interaction and communication capabilities. However, productive learning interactions cannot be considered a given and careful consideration of the design of learning activities and organizational support must be provided to foster collaboration. In this paper, a model to support collaborative learning in MUVEs is presented. This model enables the scaffolding of learning workflows and organizes collaborative learning activities by regulating interactions. Software architecture is developed to support the model, and to deploy and enact collaborative learning modules. A user-centered design has been followed to identify successful strategies for modeling collaborative learning activities in a case study. The results show how interactions with elements of 3D virtual worlds can enforce collaboration in MUVEs.

Tele-immersive environment with tiled display wall for intuitive remote collaborative work

In remote collaborative work via WAN, sharing and recognizing various high-quality visual contents such as photography, visualization image, and real video streaming is extremely important. Supporting a high-quality display of these contents on a large-scale display system is necessary to support intellectual remote collaborative work. However, these contents are currently magnified in low resolution on a general projector used as large-sized display equipment, and these equipments are difficult to display the contents with sufficient quality. In this paper, we have focused on the tiled display wall technology which configure a wide-area screen with two or more LCD and tried to display realistic high-resolution visual contents to solve these issues. We have constructed a tele-immersive environment with a tiled display wall, and have studied the availability for intuitive remote collaborative work by implementing various collaborative applications for the effective display of high-resolution contents as well as developing interaction techniques for enormous visual contents in this environment. As a result, we have showed that the practical use of a tiled display wall is useful in the construction of intellectual remote collaborative environment.

Hybrid client–server architecture and control techniques for collaborative product development using haptic interfaces

In this paper, a collaborative product development and prototyping framework is proposed by using distributed haptic interfaces along with deformable objects modeling. Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) is a promising technique for industrial product development and virtual prototyping. Network control problems such as network traffic and network delay in communication have greatly limited collaborative virtual environment applications. The problems become more difficult when high-update-rate haptic interfaces and computation intensive deformable objects modeling are integrated into CVEs for intuitive manipulation and enhanced realism. A hybrid network architecture is proposed to balance the computational burden of haptic rendering and deformable object simulation. Adaptive artificial time compensation is used to reduce the time discrepancy between the server and the client. Interpolation and extrapolation approaches are used to synchronize graphic and haptic data transmitted over the network. The proposed techniques can be used for collaborative product development, virtual assembly, remote product simulation and other collaborative virtual environments where both haptic interfaces and deformable object models are involved.

Carpeno: interfacing remote collaborative virtual environments with table-top interaction

Creativity is enhanced by communication and collaboration. Thus, the increasing number of distributed creative tasks requires better support from computer-mediated communication and collaborative tools. In this paper we introduce “Carpeno”, a new system for facilitating intuitive face-to-face and remote collaboration on creative tasks. Normally the most popular and efficient way for people to collaborate is face-to-face, sitting around a table. Computer augmented surface environments, in particular interactive table-top environments, are increasingly used to support face-to-face meetings. They help co-located teams to develop new ideas by facilitating the presentation, manipulation, and exchange of shared digital documents displayed on the table-top surface. Users can see each other at the same time as the information they are talking about. In this way the task space and communication space can be brought together in a more natural and intuitive way. The discussion of digital content is redirected from a computer screen, back to a table where people can gather around. In contrast, collaborative virtual environments (CVE) are used to support remote collaboration. They frequently create familiar discussion scenarios for remote interlocutors by utilizing room metaphors. Here, virtual avatars and table metaphors are used, where the participants can get together and communicate with each other in a way that allows behaviour that is as close to face-to-face collaboration as possible. The Carpeno system described here combines table-top interaction with a CVE to support intuitive face-to-face and remote collaboration. This allows for simultaneous co-located and remote collaboration around a common, interactive table.

INTELLIGENT PROTOCOL ADAPTATION IN A MEDICAL E-COLLABORATION ENVIRONMENT

Distributed multimedia e-health applications have a set of specific requirements which must be taken into account if effective use is to be made of the limited resources provided by public telecommunication networks. Moreover, there is an architectural gap between the provision of network-level Quality of Service (QoS) and user requirements of e-health applications. In this paper, we address the problem of bridging this gap from a multi-criteria decision-making perspective in the context of a remote collaborative environment for back pain treatment. We propose adaptable data transport mechanisms, capable of responding to evolving networking, application and user requirements. To this end we present a framework which allows for not only construction of tailored multimedia communication protocols, but also for the inclusion of user requirements in such protocols. This is achieved by equipping our protocol adaptation mechanism with multi-criteria decision making based techniques that can be used to allocate resources according to their ratio-scale priorities in response to detection of system degradation or evolving user preferences. The applicability of our approach is illustrated in three usage scenarios.
