Literature Study: The Phenomenon Of Chemical Bonding's Misconceptions And Opportunities For Remediation

This research aims to analyze the misconceptions that occur in chemical bonding materials and offer remediation processes. This type of research was library research with data taken from library materials or information. There were 32 scientific journals related to the research topic, then grouped within the last five years, and four scientific journals were produced that discussed misconceptions in chemical bonding material and four scientific journals that discussed the process of remediation of misconceptions in chemical bonding material. Based on the results of the review, misconceptions about chemistry occur in almost every sub-topic. The offer to remediate misconceptions that occur in this material is the ECIRR learning model, cognitive conflict strategy, and conceptual change strategy.

Enhancing pupils’ understanding via discussion based POE method

The Predict-Observe-Explain method (POE) stands out as an efficient method in order to overcome misconceptions in human understanding. This approach is characterized by its flexibility and variability. Researchers have created an altered version of the POE which is based on discussion and therefore called “discussion-based POE” (short POE-DE). The current research aims to examine the effect of this teaching method by reviewing students’ academic success and the remediation of misconceptions. A total of 63 eight-graders (aged 12-14 years) took part in the underlying study. 32 pupils were part of the experimental group participating in courses with POE-DE based activities. The remaining 31 represented the control group with teaching activities in line with the current science curriculum. The subject of the unit was Simple Machines. The Simple Machines Academic Achievement Test (AAT) was employed to measure the change in the students’ academic accomplishmen. The two-tier Simple Machines Conceptual Test (SMCT) was administered to determine the students’ misconceptions and observe whether they had been rectified. According to the statistical data, POE-DE based teaching activities had a substantial impact on both the academic success rate and SMCT scores of the students.

Use of concept cartoons within the conceptual change model to address students’ misconceptions in biology: a case study

ABSTRACT As some misconceptions remain persistent, comforting and highly resistant to change, it is imperative to use methods and strategies that are centred around students’ abilities, interests and needs to address those misconceptions. This study investigates the appropriateness of using ‘concept cartoons’ to address misconceptions held by forty grade 9 students on the topic ‘plant nutrition’. A mixed research methodology, using the ‘conceptual change model’ and ‘reflective teaching model’ as underpinning theoretical frames, was used to develop a methodological framework comprising key stages; namely (i) analysis of the literature to identify common misconceptions held by students on plant nutrition, (ii) implementation of a pre-test to identify the most prevalent misconceptions held by the sampled students, (iii) use of concept cartoons within the conceptual change model to clear the identified misconceptions, and (iv) capture of students’ perceptions on the use of a concept cartoon-based strategy to bring conceptual change. The findings showed that the most prevalent misconceptions held by the sampled students were related to photosynthetic pigments, leaf adaptation, definition, raw materials, and the equation of photosynthesis. With more than 80% remediation of misconceptions showcased in this study, the use of concept cartoons within the conceptual change model was found to be appropriate in addressing students’ misconceptions.

Identifikasi dan Remediasi Miskonsepsi dengan Pendekatan Perubahan Konseptual pada Materi Kesetimbangan Kimia

Identifying misconceptions in chemistry learning is important to improve the quality of learning. The use of appropriate learning approaches is needed to correct students' misconceptions. This research aims to identify and remediate students' misconceptions about chemical equilibrium material by using a conceptual change approach. The method used was a quantitative-pre-experimental method with a one-group-pretest-posttest-design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with number of samples was 63 student of eleventh grade. The instrument used was a four-tier diagnostic test based on CRI. Data was obtained by giving the tests to students twice, before and after the remediation of misconceptions using a conceptual change approach. Based on the results of identifying the initial level of students understanding, it was found that the category of understanding the concept about 41%, misconceptions about 41%, and did not understand the concept about 18%. Misconceptions with high criteria were identified in the equilibrium constant sub-material of about 65%. The remediation of misconceptions was carried out by using a conceptual change approach to chemical equilibrium material. The changes in students' understanding level are based on the average N-gain value, namely students' concept understanding of 0.77 in the high category, misconceptions of -0.79 in the decreasing category and not understanding the concept of -0.72 in the decreasing category. The reduction of high criteria misconceptions in the equilibrium constant sub-material with an N-gain value of -0.78 in the decreasing category. It was concluded that remediation using the conceptual change approach could reduce students' misconceptions.

The purpose of study was to determine the effectiveness of remediation of misconceptions by using the Connecting, Organizing, Reflecting, and Extending (CORE) learning model to reduce the number of student who had misconceptions about heat at SMP Negeri 6 Sambas. The form of design was pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. This study used a random sampling method in intac group involving 35 students of class VIIIA who were tested using a multiple-choice diagnostic test consisting of 9 questions. Based in data analysis, there was a decrease in the percentage of the students who experienced misconceptions with an average of 75.75%. The result of McNemar’s test shows that the calculated 2 of 28.26 is greater than 2 table of 3.84, so there is a significant conceptual change after remedial activities using the CORE model. The effectiveness of remediations based in the DQM price with an average of 83.27% (high category). The CORE model is expected to be used as an alternative to remediation activities to reduce the number of students who experience misconceptions.

The Impact of the E-Learning Module on Remediation of Misconceptions in Modern Physics Courses

The misconception in mastering physics concepts occurs in basic physics and is also found in advanced physics, such as Modern Physics or Quantum Physics. Efforts to remediate misconceptions have been done manually or offline but are often constrained at too long an interval between identification activities and remediation actions. Through the advancement of online learning systems, E-learning media, these obstacles can easily be overcome. This article will discuss one way of remediation using Moodle-based E-Learning modules. A total of 2 classes (45 students) were randomly selected for the experimental group and two classes (64 students) for the control group. The experimental group used a representative module based on E-Learning as a remediation treatment, while the control group used a conventional module. The results of the validation of the material and the design of the E-Learning modules were obtained as very feasible to use. Data collection uses a two-tier Modern Physic Diagnostic Test or MPDT (Modern Physic Diagnostic Test) of 30 items combined with the CRI (Certainty of Response Index) index. It is carried out twice, namely before and after treatment. The N-Gain normality analysis results showed the percentage of misconception reduction was more significant in the experimental group than in the control group. Important note obtained by implementing E-Learning is more appropriate to be used simultaneously between conventional face-to-face and E-Learning.

Using CCOText assisted by dynamic model and analogy to fostering students’ misconception about the concept of heat conduction

The aim of this study was to obtain an overview of the effect of using conceptual change oriented text (CCOText) assisted by dynamic models and analogy in the remedial teaching of the concept of heat conduction towards the remediation of misconceptions of high school students. CCOText consists of four text sections. In the third section of the text, which is the text part of the scientific explanation, the description is aided by dynamic model and analogy. The method used in this study is a pre-experiment with one group pretest-posttest design. The number of research subjects was 38 students consisting of 22 female and 16 male students, in one of the high schools in the Bandung district of West Java province. The subjects were selected by purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by conception test in the four tier test format related to the concept of heat conduction. The results showed that the use of CCOText in remedial teaching could be remediating 95% of high school students who had misconceptions on the concept of heat conduction. These results indicate that the use of CCOText assisted by Dynamic models and analogy has a high effectiveness in fostering students’ misconception about the concept of heat conduction.

Remediation of misconception on straight line motion concept using guided inquiry model assisted by student worksheet based on science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) on junior high school students

This study aims to remediate science misconceptions on the concept of straight line motion using guided inquiry models assisted by Student Worksheet Based on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This study uses an experimental method with one shoot case study technique. The test instrument in the form of three tiers multiple choice test questions was used to identify students’ misconceptions of straight line motion concept. The results showed that students’ misconceptions on straight line motion concept amounted to 47.30%. Remediation of science misconceptions through the implementation of guided inquiry models assisted by Student Worksheet Based on STEM showed the results of students’ concept understanding in the conceptual understanding category of 58.58%, misconceptions of 25.49%, guessed 3.19%, and did not understand 12.75%. It was concluded that the application of the guided inquiry model assisted by Student Worksheet Based on STEM could be applied as an alternative learning model to remediate science misconceptions.

Misconceptions on Photosynthesis and Plant Respiration Topics Based on Thinking Styles

Photosynthesis and plant respiration is an important science concept included in the curriculum in many countries, one of which is Indonesia. This topic is repeatedly taught at different age levels from elementary until tertiary education. Students who have misconceptions will assume that the concept they believe is true, but in reality does not conform to the existing scientific concept. Misconceptions will affect students’ knowledge. This knowledge will then be brought continuously to the next level of education and affect the learning achievement. Students’ thinking styles are one of the factors causing misconceptions. This study aimed to identify misconceptions based on the thinking styles of the seventh grade students about photosynthesis and plant respiration. The method used in this study was survey method. The data were collected by employing Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT) and Four Tier Test in three schools with high, medium, and low grades. The result showed that the students with impulsive and slowly imprecise thinking style had a higher percentage of misconception than those with reflective and quickly precise thinking styles. This study can be used as a reference to do remediation of misconceptions to improve the quality of learning.

The effect of remediation on reducing misconception: a metaanalysis of student thesis on physics education

The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of various remediation practices in reducing the number of student misconceptions on physics concepts. This research synthesizes 68 thesis undergraduate students of physics education which are published in Tanjungpura University library 2009-2016 period. In this study, the guidance in the form of checklist in conducting the study arranged to facilitate the understanding and assessment of the scientific work. Based on the analysis result, the average of effect size of all the synthesized thesis is 1.13. There are six forms of remedial misconceptions performed by physics education students, such as re-learning, feedback, integration of remediation in learning, physical activity, utilization of other learning resources and interviews. In addition, sampling techniques and test reliability were have contributed to the effect size of the study. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study can be considered in preparing the remediation of misconceptions on physics learning in the future.

 This study aims to 1 find out the percentage change of kinematic misconscope of motion straight after remediation, 2 Student Response in remediation implementation with cooperative learning approach Student Team Achievement Division class 10 MAN 1 Model Lubuklinggau. Subjects were 21 students based on purposive sampling technique based on previous research conducted by Novitasri. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Technique of data collecting done by triangulation that is diagnosis understanding student concept, interview and questionnaire of student response in learning. Remediation of misconceptions with cooperative learning approach Student Team Achievement Divisions showed that from 17 items tested before remediation mean misconception percentage 80,11 percent and after remediation to 37,53 percent 42.58 percent. Student response after remediation using STAD learning is very good.

Preservice chemistry teachers in action: an evaluation of attempts for changing high school students' chemistry misconceptions into more scientific conceptions

Previous research has revealed that students may hold several misconceptions regarding fundamental topics of chemistry. With the idea that teachers play a critical role in diagnosis and remediation of students' misconceptions, a “course” for preservice chemistry teachers was designed. The purpose of this study was to describe the views and understandings of preservice chemistry teachers on issues related to nature, diagnosis and remediation of misconceptions in the aftermath of this specially designed “course”. This course placed the collaborative, active and reflective practices of preservice teachers at its center. The data sources were self-reflection reports written by preservice teachers at the end of the “course” and high school students' answers to questions regarding some misconceptions after preservice teachers applied their lessons to these students. Results showed that the majority of the participating preservice teachers realized the importance and variety of misconceptions, as well as ways of dealing with them. Also, there is satisfying evidence that many of the high school students' misconceptions changed after the applied lessons.

Problem‐based learning in an eleventh grade chemistry class: ‘factors affecting cell potential’

The purpose of this research study was to examine the effectiveness of problem‐based learning (PBL) on eleventh grade students’ understanding of ‘The effects of temperature, concentration and pressure on cell potential’ and also their social skills. Stratified randomly selected control and experimental groups with 20 students each were used in this study. To determine their misunderstandings and misconceptions about closely related, previously covered subjects, such as oxidation‐reduction reactions and electrochemical cells, interviews were conducted. Following a preparatory lesson where remediation of misconceptions were undertaken, a pre‐test was given, and no significant difference was found between the two groups of students (p>0.05). Then, the same teacher taught factors that affect cell potential using a teacher‐centred traditional format to the control group, and a PBL format to the experimental group. Results from the post‐test of both groups (p<0.05) showed that PBL is effective on students’ achievement, remedying formation of misconceptions in a significant way. Interviews were also conducted with PBL students to determine their beliefs according to PBL activity. The findings according to interviews revealed that students in the PBL class were more motivated, self‐confident, willing to problem‐solve and share knowledge, and were more active in cooperative group activities than the traditionally‐taught students.

Case study analysis and the remediation of misconceptions about respiratory physiology

Most students enter the physiology classroom with one or more fundamental misconceptions about respiratory physiology. This study examined the prevalence of four respiratory misconceptions and determined the role of case analysis in the remediation of one of them. A case study was used to help students learn about oxygen transport in the blood and a conceptual diagnostic test was used to assess student understanding of the relation between Po(2) and hemoglobin saturation by probing for the corresponding (Sa/Po(2)) misconception. A 36% remediation of the Sa/Po(2) misconception was found to be associated with case analysis. This repair was selective since the frequency of three other respiratory misconceptions was found to be unchanged after classroom instruction about respiratory physiology in lectures and laboratories. Remediation of the Sa/Po(2) misconception before an instructor-led, in-class case review was superficial and temporary. Explanations provided by students who correctly answered the Sa/Po(2) conceptual diagnostic test showed improved conceptual understanding following case analysis. These results suggest that a learning strategy where students actively confront their faulty notions about respiratory physiology is useful in helping them overcome their misconceptions.
