Investigation on cellular LTE C-V2X network serving vehicular data traffic in realistic urban scenarios

The need for reliable vehicular communication is an essential precondition of future Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS). The C-ITS applications and their diverse requirements necessitate a hybrid approach that combines ad hoc and cellular networks to support seamless and robust connectivity. While the research showed tremendous potential, the successful adaptation of the hybrid approach depends on the optimal understanding of its impact on network and protocol performance in an actual reference scenario. This work, which has practical implications for the field, focuses on creating a realistic representation of the dual-link-enabled Hybrid Vehicular Network (HVN) in the simulator. Several enhancements were implemented into a network simulator, including multiple Radio Access Technologies (multi-RAT) support, models for path loss predictions, static subscribers, background interference, and SINR throughput mapping within a multi-cell environment. We then presented a parameterized data traffic steering algorithm that enables switching between Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) RAT based on channel congestion and cell load conditions. The simulation result shows the high potential of a dual-link-enabled hybrid approach and its implications on both networks under realistic vehicular networking conditions. The investigations reveal that an intelligent decision to steer traffic can target balanced connectivity and highly reliable vehicular communication at a reduced network load.

IoT-Driven solutions for VANET trustworthiness: Examining misconduct and position security challenges

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) improve the traffic management and road safety by exchanging real-time data between automobiles and roadside infrastructure. Reliable Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) solutions tend to boost VANET data security, integrity and dependability. These systems communicate VANET data between infrastructure and automobiles using sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and communication technologies. IoT-driven includes a Real-Time Traffic Observation optimizes VANET route design. Traffic management and safety improve with ITS-connected cars and infrastructure. Remote communication technologies enhance traffic management and decision-making by sending a real-time data between cars and infrastructure. Smart parking systems use real-time parking availability data from IoT sensors and devices to maximize space use and reduce congestion. Security and misbehavior are dependable problems in 40 IoT-driven VANET studies. Miscommunication and unstandardized are the main security issues which pose hazards. This review shows VANETs that requires authentication, encryption and anomaly detection to prevent attacks and IoT for transportation sector. This extensive review covers VANET reliability and IoT-driven real-time traffic monitoring, ITS, remote communication and intelligent parking systems. This review analyzes the metrics to assess the many detection techniques which includes, misconduct-Aware On-Demand Collaborative Intrusion Detection System (MACIDS) and Collision-Induced Dissociation Spectroscopy (CIDS), (i) Accuracy (ii) False Positive Rate, (iii) precision, (iv) recall (v) False Negative Rate and (vi) F1-Score in VANET security in Attack Detection Rates (ADR), misbehavior detection, evaluation metrics and detection algorithms were studied using CIC-IDS data. Due to misconduct and security issues, a strong IoT-driven solutions are required to improve VANET trustworthiness and offers a secure and reliable vehicular communication networks for safer and more efficient transportation systems.

An approach for offloading with multi-hop considerations in an RSU signal overlay setting

In recent years, significant advancements in vehicle technology have spurred growing interest in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs). This interest is driven by concerns for road safety and the need to alleviate network congestion, leading to the emergence of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). ITS focuses on improving road traffic management and safety through the utilization of wireless and mobile network communication technologies. VANETs play a pivotal role within the realm of ITS, facilitating tasks such as enhancing road safety, traffic monitoring, and ensuring passenger comfort by mitigating accidents and congestion. These objectives rely on the timely and accurate delivery of data to vehicle agents and relevant authorities, facilitated by reliable VANETs and Road Signal Units (RSUs). Achieving this necessitates identifying optimal routes with minimal distance, high radio access, and quality-awareness levels. To address these objectives, this study proposes the utilization of the Congestion Network with Predicted K-means multi-hop RSU algorithm (CN-MHMR) to enhance vehicular networking and communication. This algorithm facilitates efficient node transfer from base nodes to destination nodes via the shortest and energy-efficient paths, thereby enabling viable and reliable vehicular communications. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated based on various metrics, including energy consumption, throughput, delay, packet delivery ratio, accuracy, precision, and recall values.

Vehicular Channel Characterization in Urban Environment at 30 GHz considering Overtaking and Traffic Flow

To realize reliable and stable millimeter-wave (mmWave) vehicular wireless communication, the research of vehicular channel characteristics in the dense urban environment is becoming increasingly important. A comprehensive research on the channel characteristics for 30 GHz vehicular communication in the Beijing Central Business District (CBD) scenario is conducted in this paper. The self-developed high-performance ray-tracing (RT) simulator is employed to support intensive simulations. Based on simulation results, the effects of multiantenna and beam switching on the key channel parameters are analyzed, as well as the impact of different traffic flows. The results can provide theoretical and data support for the evaluation of vehicular channel characteristics and will help for the design of the vehicular communication system enabling future intelligent transportation.

Propagation Models in Vehicular Communications

In the advent of becoming reality, the era of autonomous vehicles is closer than ever, and with it, the need for faster and reliable wireless connections. The propagation channel determines the performance limits of wireless communications, and with the aid of empirical measurements, channel modeling is the best approach to predict and recreate how signal propagation conditions may perform. To this end, many different approaches and techniques have been implemented, from specific applications to general models, considering the characteristics of the environment (geometry-based or non-geometry-based) as well as seeking high performance algorithms in order to achieve good balance between accuracy and computational cost. This paper provides an updated overview of propagation channel models for vehicular communications, beginning with some specific propagation characteristics of these complex heterogeneous environments in terms of diverse communication scenarios, different combinations of link types, antenna placement/diversity, potentially high Doppler shifts, or non-stationarity, among others. The presented channel models are classified in four categories: empirical, non-geometry-based stochastic, geometry-based stochastic, and deterministic models, following the classical approach. The features and key concepts of the different vehicular communications channel models are presented, from sub 6 GHz to millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands. The advantages and disadvantages of the main works in the area are discussed and compared in a comprehensive way, outlining their contributions. Finally, future critical challenges and research directions for modeling reliable vehicular communications are introduced, such as the effects of vegetation, pedestrians, common scatterers, micro-mobility or spherical wavefront, which in the context of the near future are presented as research opportunities.

Performace Evaluation of Vehicular Communication

Abstract Modern societies are built on good road infra-structure and efficient transport system. Safety is a high-priority consideration in development of road traffic systems. In recent years the weather information has become becomes very vital for road traffic safety because slippery roads are the key source of road accidents in northern regions of Europe, America and Canada as well. In this article we are presenting the test experiences and pilot road weather related services by executing a set of Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication scenarios by using IEEE 802.11p and 5G test networks. We have made an effort to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11p and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) 5G test network. We also analyzed the performance of IEEE 802.11p with and without safety feature for secure and reliable vehicular communication. The combination of IEEE 802.11p with 5G test network cellular network makes the traffic system heterogeneous for traffic safety. This heterogeneous system provides the opportunity to exploit the vehicle-based actuators, sensor, and observation data in order to produce the intelligent service platform and up-to-date real time services for vehicles. In this article we have also made a comparison by using an IEEE 802.11p system having safety feature of SafeCOP (Safe Co-operating Cyber-Physical Systems using Wireless Communication) project. SafeCOP is a European project that aims cyber-physical systems-of-systems relying on wireless communication for safe and secure cooperation. This safety feature will help to decrease the amount of road accidents (Car crashes, injuries and fatalities) by offering safe and secure V2V and V2I co-operation. The fundamental advantage of this kind of performance analysis is that the communication between Vehicle-to-Road Weather station (V2RWS) can be exchanged safely and reliably, at the cost of network resources consumed by a safety feature in IEEE 802.11p. It’s clearly presented in this paper, that the use of heterogeneous network and SafeCOP feature for vehicular networking has a clear potential in near future for vehicle’s safety and security of vehicular network.

LCPPA: Lattice‐based conditional privacy preserving authentication in vehicular communication

AbstractVehicular ad hoc network (VANET) plays an extremely important role in intelligent transportation systems. It enables vehicles equipped with smart devices to communicate with vehicles or available road side units or infrastructure. It has been observed that the security of data and privacy of user are two key challenges for vehicular communication to enable sharing of resources among unfamiliar vehicles. The existing classical cryptography‐based schemes are not secure in the quantum computing world due to Shor's algorithm. To address the challenges in post‐quantum era, we have presented a framework based on short integer solution problem in some lattice that attains all effective identification and authenticity of the user to get authorized access, along with revocation to services. The integrity of proposed framework ensures that information is accurate and can be trusted. This paper ensures conditional autonomous driving and efficient vehicular traffic flow in a VANET. As a result, the presented protocol is suitable for practical applications even in the post‐quantum environment, which can be utilized for reliable vehicular communication.

The Leaky Feeder, a Reliable Medium for Vehicle to Infrastructure Communications

Reliable vehicular communications is fast becoming a necessity. Vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication, which is critical for safety, is often interrupted when vehicles travel in tunnels. Leaky Feeder (LF) or radiating cable have been the primary solution to provide wireless access in tunnels and mines, but being overlooked until now. The LF is a natural multi antenna transceiver ideal for broadband short rage access. In this work, we model the LF as a linear antenna array and derive the average bit error rate (BER) in Rayleigh fading channel considering Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and M-Array Quadrature Amplitude (M-QAM) Modulations. We consider maximal ratio transmission (MRT) at the transmission end and coherent detection and maximal ratio combining (MRC) at the receiving end. Analytical expressions are derived for the BER. The effects of slot spacing and carrier frequency on the BER are also studied. Numerical evaluations show that the LF is a strong candidate for tunnels with much lower BER than a single antenna transmitter with the same SNR.

Estimation of Neighbors Position privacy scheme with an Adaptive Beaconing approach for location privacy in VANETs

In this work, we consider the issue of designing a location privacy scheme that preserve the Quality of Service (QoS) of the road safety applications. We propose a privacy mechanism, denoted Estimation of Neighbors Position privacy scheme with an Adaptive Beaconing approach (ENeP-AB), in which the change of pseudonym is based on the number of neighbors and their predicted positions. Then, we show that the Adaptive Beaconing approach, used to manage efficiently the wireless channel and to provide reliable vehicular communications, guarantees the same performances in terms of location privacy as well as the radio silence technique. Hence, the proposed privacy scheme is extended with an Adaptive Beaconing approach, called Extended Adaptive Beaconing Rate Protocol (E-ABRP). Our simulations demonstrate clearly that the beaconing rate approaches create a confusion in location and time where the change of pseudonym occurs while improving the quality of safety applications.

Resource Allocation for D2D-Enabled Vehicular Communications

The widely deployed cellular network, assisted with device-to-device (D2D) communications, can provide a promising solution to support efficient and reliable vehicular communications. Fast channel variations caused by high mobility in a vehicular environment need to be properly accounted for when designing resource allocation schemes for the D2D-enabled vehicular networks. In this paper, we perform spectrum sharing and power allocation based only on slowly varying large-scale fading information of wireless channels. Pursuant to differing requirements for different types of links, i.e., high capacity for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links and ultrareliability for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links, we attempt to maximize the ergodic capacity of the V2I connections while ensuring reliability guarantee for each V2V link. Sum ergodic capacity of all V2I links is first taken as the optimization objective to maximize the overall V2I link throughput. Minimum ergodic capacity maximization is then considered to provide a more uniform capacity performance across all V2I links. Novel algorithms that yield optimal resource allocation and are robust to channel variations are proposed. Their desirable performance is confirmed by computer simulation.

Software defined P2P architecture for reliable vehicular communications

Vehicular networking is considered a promising and enabling technology that helps in the realization and diversification of vehicle related applications such as road traffic safety, emergency management, and infotainment. For applications such as the road traffic safety, the system has to respond in certain bounded time and ensure higher reliability. A major bottleneck of the existing architectures is the reliability and scalability that results in a considerable performance degradation. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a software defined peer to peer (P2P) architecture for reliable vehicular communications solution that scales out overall network intelligence into the system components (Road side units, on-board units, Gateways, Control centre) and offer an unprecedented reliability, adaptability and scalability. The reliability of the communication is achieved by using redundant system components such as multiple switches and GWs links that are deployed to achieve lower communication latencies and higher packet success rates. Furthermore, higher reliability is achieved by the application of fast-failover and fast recovery techniques. The proposed architecture is implemented using Docker, and containerized ONOS and Cassandra. The obtained results show that the proposed architecture offer higher reliability by offering higher packet success rate (PSR) and smaller round trip time (RTT).

A micro-artificial bee colony based multicast routing in vehicular ad hoc networks

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have drawn great attention in wireless communications. Prompt and reliable vehicular communication is a must to provide a good service. Routing is the key problem in information transmission of VANETs. This paper studies quality of service (QoS) constrained multicast routing problem. This problem has been proved to be NP-complete problem, and swarm intelligence algorithms are more suitable than classical algorithms. A micro artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm is proposed to deal with the problem. The QoS constraints include maximize network lifetime and minimizing delay cost. Multicast routing is abstracted to a continuous optimization problem. Then, it is linked with MABC. Numerical simulation is implemented on a traffic scenario with three instances. Results show that the MABC algorithm successfully attains the optimal routes. Moreover, the routing framework can be applied in real time given the network structure does not change too frequently.
