Intra-Day and Inter-Day Reliability of Measurements of the electromyographic signal on masseter and temporal muscles in patients with Down syndrome

The aim of the present study was to evaluate intra-day (test) and inter-day (re-test) reliability of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals of the masseter and temporal muscles in patients with Down syndrome (DS). We determined the reliability of sEMG variables in 33 patients with DS. EMG signals were recorded at rest as well as during maximum voluntary clenching and maximum habitual intercuspation (MHI). The signals were analyzed considering the amplitude in the root mean square (RMS), mean frequency (MNF), median frequency (MDF) and approximate entropy (ApEn). The intraclass correlation (ICC2,1) for the three trials recorded during MHI in the two sessions (test and retest) revealed excellent intra-session and inter-session reliability (ICC2,1 = 0.76 to 0.97) for all sEMG variables and muscles. In the rest position, excellent reliability was found for RMS and ApEn (ICC2,1 = 0.75 to 1.00) and good to excellent reliability was found for MDF and MNF (ICC2,1 = 0.64 to 0.93). The intra-session (test) and inter-session (re-test) analyses demonstrated the reliability of nonlinear sEMG variables of the masticatory muscles in adults with Down Syndrome.

Evaluation of the Electromyography Test for the Analysis of the Aerobic-Anaerobic Transition in Elite Cyclists during Incremental Exercise

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of surface electromyography (EMG) for automatic detection of the aerobic and anaerobic thresholds during an incremental continuous cycling test using 1 min exercise periods in elite cyclists. (2) Methods: Sixteen well-trained cyclists completed an incremental exercise test (25 W/1 min) to exhaustion. Surface bipolar EMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, and gluteus maximus, and the root mean square (RMS) were assessed. The multi-segment linear regression method was used to calculate the first and second EMG thresholds (EMGT1 and EMGT2). During the test, gas exchange data were collected to determine the first and second ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2). (3) Results: Two breakpoints (thresholds) were identified in the RMS EMG vs. time curve for all muscles in 75% of participants. The two breakpoints, EMGT1 and EMGT2, were detected at around 70%–80% and 90%–95% of VO2MAX, respectively. No significant differences were found between the means of VT1 and EMGT1 for the vastii and biceps femoris muscles (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences between means of EMGT2 and VT2 (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: It is concluded that the multi-segment linear regression algorithm is a valid non-invasive method for analyzing the aerobic-anaerobic transition during incremental tests with 1 min stage durations.

Validity and Reliability of Surface Electromyography in the Assessment of Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia

The study aims to evaluate the reliability and the discriminative validity of surface electromyography (sEMG) in the assessment of patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). The study design is cross-sectional. Fifteen patients with primary MTD (mean age: 34.07 ± 10.99 years) and 15 healthy volunteers (mean age: 34.53 ± 10.63 years) were included. All participants underwent evaluation of sEMG to record the electrical activity of the thyrohyoid and cricothyroid muscles. The outcome measures were the root mean square (RMS), activity peak, duration, and time to the peak activity, which were obtained during /a/ and /i/ prolongation for test-retest reliability. The test-retest reliability was good to excellent for the RMS and peak activity measures (intraclass correlation coefficient [agreement] [ICCagreement] = 0.49-0.98). The reliability for the activity duration was poor to excellent (ICCagreement = 0.19-0.9). Poor test-retest reliability was found for the time to peak measure (ICCagreement = 0.15-0.37). The standard error of measurement for all sEMG measures was between 0.41 and 2.05. The smallest detectable change (SDC) was calculated between 1.13 and 5.66. The highest SDC values were obtained for the peak and the lowest SDCs were documented for the duration (5.66 and 1.13, respectively). All sEMG measures were not able to discriminate between the MTD patients and healthy subjects (P > 0.05). The sEMG is a reliable tool to measure the RMS, the peak activity, and the activity duration in primary MTD. However, it is not able to discriminate the patients with primary MTD from healthy subjects.

Absolute and relative intrasession reliability of surface EMG variables for voluntary precise forearm movements

The reliability of surface electromyography (EMG) derived parameters is of high importance, but there is distinct lack of studies concerning the reliability during dynamic contractions. Especially Amplitude, Fourier and Wavelet parameter in conjunction have not been tested so far. The interpretation of the EMG variables might be difficult because the movement itself introduces additional factors that affect its characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine the relative and absolute intrasession reliability of electromyographic (EMG) variables of selected arm muscles during concurrent precise elbow extension/flexion movements at different force levels and movement speed. Participants (all-male: n=17, range 20–32years) were asked to adapt to a gross-motor visuomotor tracking task (elbow extension/flexion movement) using a custom-built lever arm apparatus. After sufficient adaptation surface electromyography was used to record the electrical activity of mm. biceps brachii, brachioradialis and triceps brachii, and the signal amplitude (RMS [μV]) and the mean frequency of the power spectrum (MNF [Hz]) were computed. Additionally Wavelet analysis was used. Relative reproducibility (intraclass correlation) for signal amplitude, mean frequency of the power spectrum and Wavelet intensity during dynamic contractions was fair to good, independent of force level and movement speed (ICC=0.71–0.98). The amount of absolute intrasession reliability (coefficient of variation) of EMG variables depends on muscle and force level.

Reliability of Surface Electromyography in the Assessment of Paraspinal Muscle Fatigue: An Updated Systematic Review

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to review the literature to determine whether surface electromyography (EMG) is a reliable tool to assess paraspinal muscle fatigue in healthy subjects and in patients with low back pain (LBP). MethodsA literature search for the period of 2000 to 2012 was performed, using PubMed, ProQuest, Science Direct, EMBASE, OVID, CINAHL, and MEDLINE databases. Electromyography, reliability, median frequency, paraspinal muscle, endurance, low back pain, and muscle fatigue were used as keywords. ResultsThe literature search yielded 178 studies using the above keywords. Twelve articles were selected according to the inclusion criteria of the study. In 7 of the 12 studies, the surface EMG was only applied in healthy subjects, and in 5 studies, the reliability of surface EMG was investigated in patients with LBP or a comparison with a control group. In all of these studies, median frequency was shown to be a reliable EMG parameter to assess paraspinal muscles fatigue. There was a wide variation among studies in terms of methodology, surface EMG parameters, electrode location, procedure, and homogeneity of the study population. ConclusionsThe results suggest that there seems to be a convincing body of evidence to support the merit of surface EMG in the assessment of paraspinal muscle fatigue in healthy subject and in patients with LBP.

Establishment of a recording method for surface electromyography in the iliopsoas muscle

We examined the availability and reliability of surface electromyography (EMG) signals from the iliopsoas muscle (IL). Using serial magnetic resonance images from fifty healthy young males, we evaluated whether the superficial region of IL was adequate for attaching surface EMG electrodes. Subsequently, we assessed EMG cross-talk from the sartorius muscle (SA)—the nearest to IL—using a selective cooling method in fourteen subjects. The skin above SA was cooled, and the median frequencies of EMG signals from IL and SA were determined. The maximum voluntary contraction during isometric hip flexion was measured before and after selective cooling, and surface EMG signals from SA and IL were measured. The superficial area of IL was adequately large (13.2±2.7cm2) for recording surface EMG in all fifty subjects. The maximum perimeter for the medial–lateral skin facing IL was noted at a level 3–5cm distal to the anterior superior iliac spine. Following cooling, the median frequency for SA decreased significantly (from 70.1 to 51.9Hz, p<0.001); however, that for IL did not alter significantly. These results demonstrated that EMG cross-talk from SA was negligible for surface EMG signals from IL during hip flexion.

Future Directions in Surface Electromyography

Abstract The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) has increased exponentially in the past four decades. SEMG is one of the most widespread measures employed today in psychophysiological assessment and one of three primary biofeedback modalities. This article briefly outlines three areas that the author believes are important for SEMG to address if it is to continue to flourish in the future: applications in telehealth, the use of telemetry and ambulatory monitoring, and studies on the stability or reliability of surface electromyography.

Reliability of Surface Electromyography During Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contractions, Jump Landings, and Cutting

The reliability of electromyographic (EMG) data has been examined for isometric and slow dynamic tasks, but little is known about the repeatability of this data for ballistic movements. The purpose of this study was to examine the within-session, trial-to-trial reliability of a variety of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles during isometric and ballistic activities. Data were analyzed by way of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), intersubject coefficients of variation (CVinter), and intrasubject coefficients of variation (CVintra). Twenty-four subjects performed 3 repetitions each of 2 randomly ordered test exercises, including landing from a depth jump (J) and cutting after a 10-m sprint (C). Data were acquired and processed with root mean square EMG for the muscles assessed, and data were analyzed for each exercise using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Results revealed that all ICC values were greater than 0.80, with most values greater than 0.90, CVinter values ranged from 5.4% to 148.7%, and CVintra values ranged from 11.5% to 49.3%. This study indicates that EMG is a reliable method for assessing the reproducibility of both the quadriceps and hamstrings muscle activation during either isometric or ballistic exercises.

RELIABILITY OF SURFACE EMG MEASUREMENTS OF THE QUADRICEPS DURING MAXIMAL ISOMETRIC CONTRACTIONS FOLLOWING WATER IMMERSION

Background: The influence of water immersion on neuromuscular function is of importance to a number of disciplines; however, the reliability of surface electromyography (SEMG) following water immersion is not known. This study examined the reliability of SEMG amplitude during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) of the vastus lateralis following water immersion. Methods: Using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer and in a randomized order, 12 healthy male subjects performed four MVICs at 60° knee flexion on both the dominant and nondominant kicking legs, and the SEMG was recorded. Each subject's dominant and nondominant kicking leg was then randomly assigned to have SEMG electrodes removed or covered during 15 min of water immersion (20°C–25°C). Following water immersion, subjects performed a further four MVICs. Results: Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the relative standard error of measurement (%SEM) of SEMG amplitude showed moderate to high trial-to-trial reliability when electrodes were covered (0.93% and 2.79%) and removed (0.95% and 2.10%, respectively). Conclusions: The results of the this study indicate that SEMG amplitude of the vastus lateralis may be accurately determined during maximal voluntary contractions following water immersion if electrodes are either removed or covered with water-resistive tape during the immersion.
