A Simulation Study of Low-power Relativistic Jets: Flow Dynamics and Radio Morphology of FR-I Jets

Radio galaxies are classified into two primary categories based on their morphology: center-brightened FR-I and edge-brightened FR-II. It is believed that the jet power and interactions with the ambient medium govern the deceleration and decollimation of the jet-spine flows, which, in turn, influence this dichotomy. Using high-resolution, three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations, we follow the development of flow structures on sub-kiloparsec to kiloparsec scales in kinetically dominant low-power relativistic jets. We find that the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet spine and the advance speed of the jet head, which depend on the energy injection flux and the jet-to-background density contrast, primarily determine the dynamics and structures of the jet-induced flows. The entrainment of ambient gas and the background density and pressure gradient may also play significant roles. To emulate radio morphology, we produce the synthetic maps of the synchrotron surface brightness for the simulated jets, by employing simple models for magnetic field distribution and nonthermal electron population and considering relativistic beaming effects at different inclination angles. Both the flow structures and radio maps capture the longitudinal and transverse structures of the jet-spine and shear layer, consistent with observations. We also compare different background effects and argue that the loss of pressure confinement beyond the galactic core may be a key factor in the flaring and disruption of FR-I jets. Our results confirm that mildly relativistic jets could explain the one-sidedness or asymmetries with the boosted main jet and deboosted counterjet pairs.

Late Jets, Early Sparks: Illuminating the Premaximum Bumps in Superluminous Supernovae

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) radiate ≳10–100 times more energy than ordinary stellar explosions, implicating a novel power source behind these enigmatic events. One frequently discussed source, particularly for hydrogen-poor (Type I) SLSNe, is a central engine such as a millisecond magnetar or accreting black hole. Both black hole and magnetar engines are expected to channel a fraction of their luminosity into a collimated relativistic jet. Using 3D relativistic hydrodynamical simulations, we explore the interaction of a relativistic jet, endowed with a luminosity L j ≈ 1045.5 erg s−1 and duration t eng ≈ 10 days compatible with those needed to power SLSNe, launched into the envelope of the exploding star. The jet successfully breaks through the expanding ejecta, and its shocked cocoon powers ultraviolet/optical emission lasting several days after the explosion and reaching a peak luminosity ≳1044 erg s−1, corresponding to a sizable fraction of L j . This high radiative efficiency is the result of the modest adiabatic losses the cocoon experiences owing to the low optical depths of the enlarged ejecta at these late times, e.g., compared to the more compact stars in gamma-ray bursts. The luminosity and temperature of the cocoon emission match those of the “bumps” in SLSN light curves observed weeks prior to the optical maximum in many SLSNe. Confirmation of jet breakout signatures by future observations (e.g., days-long to weeks-long internal X-ray emission from the jet for on-axis observers, spectroscopy confirming large photosphere velocities v/c ≳ 0.1, or detection of a radio afterglow) would offer strong evidence for central engines powering SLSNe.

Signatures of low-mass black hole–neutron star mergers

ABSTRACT The recent observation of the GW230529 event indicates that black hole–neutron star binaries can contain low-mass black holes. Since lower mass systems are more favourable for tidal disruption, such events are promising candidates for multimessenger observations. In this study, we employ five finite-temperature, composition-dependent matter equations of state and present results from ten 3D general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations for the mass ratios $q = 2.6$ and 5. Two of these simulations target the chirp mass and effective spin parameter of the GW230529 event, while the remaining eight contain slightly higher mass black holes, including both spinning ($a_{\mathrm{ BH}} = 0.7$) and non-spinning ($a_{\mathrm{ BH}} = 0$) models. We discuss the impact of the equation of state, spin, and mass ratio on black hole–neutron star mergers by examining both gravitational-wave and ejected matter properties. For the low-mass ratio model we do not see fast-moving ejecta for the softest equation of state model, but the stiffer model produces on the order of $10^{-6}\,\mathrm{ M}_\odot$ of fast-moving ejecta, expected to contribute to an electromagnetic counterpart. Notably, the high-mass ratio model produces nearly the same amount of total dynamical ejecta, but yields 52 times more fast-moving ejecta than the low-mass ratio system. In addition, we observe that the black-hole spin tends to decrease the amount of fast-moving ejecta while increasing significantly the total ejected mass. Finally, we note that the disc mass tends to increase as the neutron star compactness decreases.

A Revisited Equilibrium Solution of the Fishbone and Moncrief Torus for Extended General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations

Accretion physics has become more important recently due to the detection of the first horizon-scale images of the supermassive black holes of M 87* and Sgr A* by the Event Horizon Telescope. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of magnetized accretion flows onto a Kerr black hole have been used to interpret them. However, further testing the theory of gravity by using horizon-scale images requires performing consistent GRMHD simulations in non-Kerr spacetime. In this paper, we revisited the hydrodynamical equilibrium solution of the Fishbone and Moncrief (FM) torus that can be used to study any stationary, axisymmetric, vacuum, or nonvacuum spacetime. Further, we check the stability of the FM torus in non-Kerr spacetime by general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. We find that FM torus in non-Kerr spacetime is indeed stable under long-term evolution. We conclude that the generalized FM torus solution would be very useful for creating new GRMHD libraries in extended Kerr black holes.

Can the Symmetric Fermi and eROSITA Bubbles Be Produced by Tilted Jets?

The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope reveals two large bubbles in the Galaxy, extending nearly symmetrically ∼50° above and below the Galactic center (GC). Previous simulations of bubble formation invoking active galactic nucleus (AGN) jets have assumed that the jets are vertical to the Galactic disk; however, in general, the jet orientation does not necessarily correlate with the rotational axis of the Galactic disk. Using three-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic simulations including cosmic rays (CRs) and thermal gas, we show that the dense clumpy gas within the Galactic disk disrupts jet collimation (“failed jets” hereafter), which causes the failed jets to form hot bubbles. Subsequent buoyancy in the stratified atmosphere renders them vertical to form the symmetric Fermi and eROSITA bubbles (collectively, Galactic bubbles). We find that (1) despite the relativistic jets emanating from the GC at various angles ≤45° with respect to the rotational axis of the Galaxy, the Galactic bubbles nonetheless appear aligned with the axis; (2) the edge of the eROSITA bubbles corresponds to a forward shock driven by the hot bubbles; (3) followed by the forward shock is a tangling contact discontinuity corresponding to the edge of the Fermi bubbles; (4) assuming a leptonic model we find that the observed gamma-ray bubbles and microwave haze can be reproduced with a best-fit CR power-law spectral index of 2.4; The agreements between the simulated and the observed multiwavelength features suggest that forming the Galactic bubbles by oblique AGN failed jets is a plausible scenario.

Dynamical properties of mildly relativistic ejecta produced by the mass-loading of gamma-ray burst jets in dense ambient media

Abstract We present the results of a series of 3D special relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) jet in a massive circumstellar medium (CSM) surrounding the progenitor star. Our simulations reproduce the jet morphology transitioning from a well-collimated state to a thermal pressure-driven state for a range of CSM masses and outer radii. The jet–CSM interaction redistributes the jet energy to materials expanding into a wide solid angle and results in a quasi-spherical ejecta with four-velocities from $\Gamma \beta \simeq 0.1$ to 10. The mass and kinetic energy of the ejecta with velocities faster than $0.1c$ are typically of the order of $0.1\, M_{\odot }$ and $10^{51}\:\mbox{erg}$ with only a weak dependence on the CSM mass and radius for the explored CSM parameter ranges. We find that the numerically obtained density structure of the mildly relativistic ejecta is remarkably universal. The radial density profile is well approximated as a power-law function of the radial velocity with an index of $-5$, $\rho \propto v^{-5}$, in agreement with our previous simulations and other studies, as well as those suggested from recent studies on early-phase spectra of supernovae associated with GRBs. Such fast ejecta rapidly becomes transparent following its expansion. Gradually releasing the trapped thermal photons, the ejecta gives rise to bright UV–optical emission within ${\sim} 1\:$d. We discuss the potential link of the relativistic ejecta resulting from jet–CSM interaction to GRB-associated supernovae as well as fast and blue optical transients.

Jetsimpy: A Highly Efficient Hydrodynamic Code for Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows are emissions from ultrarelativistic blast waves produced by a narrow jet interacting with surrounding matter. Since the first multimessenger observation of a neutron star merger, hydrodynamic modeling of GRB afterglows for structured jets with smoothly varying angular energy distributions has gained increased interest. While the evolution of a jet is well described by self-similar solutions in both ultrarelativistic and Newtonian limits, modeling the transitional phase remains challenging. This is due to the nonlinear spreading of a narrow jet to a spherical configuration and the breakdown of self-similar solutions. Analytical models are limited in capturing these nonlinear effects, while relativistic hydrodynamic simulations are computationally expensive, which restricts the exploration of various initial conditions. In this work, we introduce a reduced hydrodynamic model that approximates the blast wave as an infinitely thin two-dimensional surface. Further assuming axial symmetry, this model simplifies the simulation to one dimension and drastically reduces the computational costs. We have compared our modeling to relativistic hydrodynamic simulations and semianalytic methods, and applied it to fit the light curve and flux centroid motion of GRB 170817A. These comparisons demonstrate good agreement and validate our approach. We have developed this method into a numerical tool, jetsimpy, which models the synchrotron GRB afterglow emission from a blast wave with arbitrary angular energy and Lorentz factor distribution. Although the code is built with GRB afterglow in mind, it applies to any relativistic jet. This tool is particularly useful in Markov Chain Monte Carlo studies and is provided to the community.

Probing nuclear physics with supernova gravitational waves and machine learning

ABSTRACT Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are sources of powerful gravitational waves (GWs). We assess the possibility of extracting information about the equation of state (EOS) of high density matter from the GW signal. We use the bounce and early post-bounce signals of rapidly rotating supernovae. A large set of GW signals is generated using general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations for various EOS models. The uncertainty in the electron capture rate is parametrized by generating signals for six different models. To classify EOSs based on the GW data, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Even with the uncertainty in the electron capture rates, we find that the CNN models can classify the EOSs with an average accuracy of about 87 per cent for a set of four distinct EOS models.

Dynamics of baryon ejection in magnetar giant flares: implications for radio afterglows, r-process nucleosynthesis, and fast radio bursts

ABSTRACT We explore the impact of a magnetar giant flare (GF) on the neutron star (NS) crust, and the associated baryon mass ejection. We consider that sudden magnetic energy dissipation creates a thin high-pressure shell above a portion of the NS surface, which drives a relativistic shockwave into the crust, heating a fraction of these layers sufficiently to become unbound along directions unconfined by the magnetic field. We explore this process using spherically symmetric relativistic hydrodynamical simulations. For an initial shell pressure PGF we find the total unbound ejecta mass roughly obeys the relation $M_{\rm {ej}}\sim 4\!-\!9\times 10^{24}\, \rm {g}\, (P_{\rm GF}/10^{30}\, \rm {erg}\, \rm {cm}^{-3})^{1.43}$. For $P_{\rm {GF}}\sim 10^{30}\!-\!10^{31}\, \rm {erg}\, \rm {cm}^{-3}$ corresponding to the dissipation of a magnetic field of strength $\sim 10^{15.5}\!-\!10^{16}\, \rm {G}$, we find $M_{\rm {ej}}\sim 10^{25}\!-\!10^{26}\, \rm {g}$ with asymptotic velocities vej/c ∼ 0.3–0.6 compatible with the ejecta properties inferred from the afterglow of the 2004 December GF from SGR 1806-20. Because the flare excavates crustal material to a depth characterized by an electron fraction Ye ≈ 0.40–0.46, and is ejected with high entropy and rapid expansion time-scale, the conditions are met for heavy element r-process nucleosynthesis via the alpha-rich freeze-out mechanism. Given an energetic GF rate of roughly once per century in the Milky Way, we find that magnetar GFs could be an appreciable heavy r-process source that tracks star formation. We predict that GFs are accompanied by short ∼minutes long, luminous $\sim 10^{39}\, \rm {erg}\, \rm {s}^{-1}$ optical transients powered by r-process decay (nova brevis), akin to scaled-down kilonovae. Our findings also have implications for the synchrotron nebulae surrounding some repeating fast radio burst sources.

Model Spectrum of Ultrahigh-energy Cosmic Rays Accelerated in FR-I Radio Galaxy Jets

Nearby radio galaxies (RGs) of Fanaroff–Riley Class I (FR-I) are considered possible sites for the production of observed ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Among those, some exhibit blazar-like inner jets, while others display plume-like structures. We reproduce the flow dynamics of FR-I jets using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. Subsequently, we track the transport and energization of cosmic ray (CR) particles within the simulated jet flows using Monte Carlo simulations. The key determinant of flow dynamics is the mean Lorentz factor of the jet-spine flow, 〈Γ〉spine. When 〈Γ〉spine ≳ 6, the jet spine remains almost unimpeded, but for 〈Γ〉spine ≲ 3, substantial jet deceleration occurs. CRs gain energy mainly through diffusive shock acceleration for E ≲ 1 EeV and shear acceleration for E ≳ 1 EeV. The time-asymptotic energy spectrum of CRs escaping from the jet can be modeled by a double power law, transitioning from ∼E −0.6 to ∼E −2.6 around a break energy, E break, with an exponential cutoff at Ebreak〈Γ〉spine2 . E break is limited either by the Hillas confinement condition or by particle escape from the cocoon via fast spatial diffusion. The spectral slopes primarily arise from multiple episodes of shock and relativistic shear acceleration, and the confinement–escape processes within the cocoon. The exponential cutoff is determined by nongradual shear acceleration that boosts the energy of high-energy CRs by a factor of ∼〈Γ〉spine2 . We suggest that the model spectrum derived in this work could be employed to investigate the contribution of RGs to the observed population of UHECRs.

Numerical Simulation of Photospheric Emission in Long Gamma-Ray Bursts: Prompt Correlations, Spectral Shapes, and Polarizations

We explore the properties of photospheric emission in the context of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using three numerical models that combine relativistic hydrodynamical simulations and Monte Carlo radiation transfer calculations in three dimensions. Our simulations confirm that photospheric emission gives rise to correlations between the spectral peak energy and luminosity that agree with the observed Yonetoku, Amati, and Golenetskii correlations. It is also shown that the spectral peak energy and luminosity correlate with the bulk Lorentz factor, as indicated in the literature. On the other hand, synthetic spectral shapes tend to be narrower than those of the observations. This result indicates that an additional physical process that can provide nonthermal broadening is needed to reproduce the spectral features. Furthermore, the polarization analysis finds that, while the degree of polarization is low for the emission from the jet core (Π < 4%), it tends to increase with viewing angle outside of the core and can be as high as Π ∼ 20%–40% in an extreme case. This suggests that the typical GRBs show systematically low polarization compared to softer, dimmer counterparts (X-ray-rich GRBs and X-ray flashes). Interestingly, our simulations indicate that photospheric emission exhibits large temporal variation in the polarization position angle (Δψ ∼ 90°), which may be compatible with those inferred in observations. A notable energy dependence of the polarization property is another characteristic feature found in the current study. Particularly, the difference in the position angle among different energy bands can be as large as ∼90°.

General relativistic moving-mesh hydrodynamic simulations with arepo and applications to neutron star mergers

ABSTRACT We implement general relativistic hydrodynamics in the moving-mesh code arepo. We also couple a solver for the Einstein field equations employing the conformal flatness approximation. The implementation is validated by evolving isolated static neutron stars using a fixed metric or a dynamical space–time. In both tests, the frequencies of the radial oscillation mode match those of independent calculations. We run the first moving-mesh simulation of a neutron star merger. The simulation includes a scheme to adaptively refine or derefine cells and thereby adjusting the local resolution dynamically. The general dynamics are in agreement with independent smoothed particle hydrodynamics and static-mesh simulations of neutron star mergers. Coarsely comparing, we find that dynamical features like the post-merger double-core structure or the quasi-radial oscillation mode persist on longer time scales, possibly reflecting a low numerical diffusivity of our method. Similarly, the post-merger gravitational wave emission shows the same features as observed in simulations with other codes. In particular, the main frequency of the post-merger phase is found to be in good agreement with independent results for the same binary system, while, in comparison, the amplitude of the post-merger gravitational wave signal falls off slower, i.e. the post-merger oscillations are less damped. The successful implementation of general relativistic hydrodynamics in the moving-mesh arepo code, including a dynamical space–time evolution, provides a fundamentally new tool to simulate general relativistic problems in astrophysics.

Are Odd Radio Circles phoenixes of powerful radio galaxies?

Abstract Odd Radio Circles (ORCs) are a class of low surface brightness, circular objects approximately one arcminute in diameter. ORCs were recently discovered in the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) data and subsequently confirmed with follow-up observations on other instruments, yet their origins remain uncertain. In this paper, we suggest that ORCs could be remnant lobes of powerful radio galaxies, re-energised by the passage of a shock. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations with synchrotron emission calculated in post-processing, we show that buoyant evolution of remnant radio lobes is alone too slow to produce the observed ORC morphology. However, the passage of a shock can produce both filled and edge-brightnened ORC-like morphologies for a wide variety of shock and observing orientations. Circular ORCs are predicted to have host galaxies near the geometric centre of the radio emission, consistent with observations of these objects. Significantly offset hosts are possible for elliptical ORCs, potentially causing challenges for accurate host galaxy identification. Observed ORC number counts are broadly consistent with a paradigm in which moderately powerful radio galaxies are their progenitors.

A numerical study of relativistic oblique shock reflection

Shocks are ubiquitous in astrophysical sources, many of which involve relativistic bulk motions, leading to the formation of relativistic shocks. Such relativistic shocks have so far been studied mainly in one dimension, for simplicity, but the complex nature of the relevant astrophysical flows often requires higher-dimensional studies. Here, we study the two-dimensional problem of the reflection of a planer shock off of a wall for a general incidence angle and a cold unshocked medium. We use primarily relativistic hydrodynamic numerical simulations and elaborately compare the results to an analytic treatment. The simulations are performed both in the rest frame S of the unshocked fluid, where the dimensionless proper speed of the singly shocked fluid is u1=Γ1β1 and the shock incidence angle is α1, and in the rest frame S′ of the point P of intersection of the incident shock and the wall for regular reflection (RR). Good agreement is obtained between the simulations in these two frames and with the analytic solution. The establishment of a steady flow in frame S′ is explored, along with the transition between the strong and weak shock RR solutions. The transition line between RR and Mach reflection is studied numerically in the u1 − α1 plane and found to coincide with the analytic detachment/sonic line. The flow properties along the sonic line are investigated in detail focusing on how they vary between the Newtonian and relativistic limits.

General relativistic simulations of high-mass binary neutron star mergers: rapid formation of low-mass stellar black holes

ABSTRACT Almost a hundred compact binary mergers have been detected via gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration in the past few years providing us with a significant amount of new information on black holes and neutron stars. In addition to observations, numerical simulations using newly developed modern codes in the field of gravitational wave physics will guide us to understand the nature of single and binary degenerate systems and highly energetic astrophysical processes. We here presented a set of new fully general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of high-mass binary neutron star systems using the open-source EINSTEIN TOOLKIT and LORENE codes. We considered systems with total baryonic masses ranging from 2.8$\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ to 4.0$\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ and used the SLy equation of state. We analysed the gravitational wave signal for all models and report potential indicators of systems undergoing rapid collapse into a black hole that could be observed by future detectors like the Einstein Telescope and the Cosmic Explorer. The properties of the post-merger black hole, the disc and ejecta masses, and their dependence on the binary parameters were also extracted. We also compared our numerical results with recent analytical fits presented in the literature and provided parameter-dependent semi-analytical relations between the total mass and mass ratio of the systems and the resulting black hole masses and spins, merger frequency, BH formation time, ejected mass, disc mass, and radiated gravitational wave energy.

General relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of perturbed transonic accretion

Contact. Comparing horizon-scale observations of Sgr A* and M 87* with numerical simulations has provided considerable insight into their interpretation. Most of these simulations are variations of the same physical scenario consisting of a rotation-supported torus seeded with poloidal magnetic fields. However, this approach has several well-known limitations such as secular decreasing trends in mass-accretion rates that render long-term variability studies difficult; a lack of connection with the large-scale accretion flow, which is replaced by an artificial medium emulating vacuum; and significant differences with respect to the predictions of models of accretion onto Sgr A* fed by stellar winds. Aims. We aim to study the flow patterns that arise on horizon scales in more general accretion scenarios that have a clearer connection with the large-scale flow, and are at the same time controlled by a reduced set of parameters. Methods. As a first step in this direction, we performed three-dimensional general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of rotating transonic flows with velocity perturbations injected from a spherical boundary located far away from the central object (1000 gravitational radii). We studied the general properties of these flows with varying perturbation amplitudes and angular momentum. We analyzed time series of mass and angular-momentum radial fluxes, angle- and time-averaged profiles, and synthetic bremsstrahlung light curves, as well as the three-dimensional structure of the flow, and quantified shock and sonic transitions in the solutions. Results. We observe a rich phenomenology in accretion patterns, which includes smooth Bondi-like flows, turbulent torus-like structures, shocks, filaments, and complex sonic structures. For sufficiently large perturbations and angular momentum, radial profiles deviate from the constant entropy and constant angular-momentum profiles used for initialization and resemble those of advection-dominated accretion flows, showing evidence of entropy generation and angular-momentum redistribution not mediated by magnetic fields. Time series do not show the secular decreasing trend and are suitable for long-term variability studies. We see that the fluctuations are amplified and extend further in frequency than the injected spectrum, producing a red noise spectrum both for the mass-accretion rate and the synthetic light curves. Conclusions. We present a simulation setup that can produce a wide variety of flow patterns at horizon scales and incorporate information from large scale accretion models. The future inclusion of magnetic fields and radiative cooling could make this type of simulation a viable alternative for the numerical modeling of general low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs).

Partial stellar tidal disruption events and their rates

ABSTRACT Tidal disruption events (TDEs) of stars operated by massive black holes (MBHs) will be detected in thousands by upcoming facilities such as the Vera Rubin Observatory. In this work, we assess the rates of standard total TDEs, destroying the entire star, and partial TDEs, in which a stellar remnant survives the interaction, by solving 1D Fokker–Planck equations. Our rate estimates are based on a novel definition of the loss cone whose size is commensurate with the largest radius at which partial disruptions can occur, as motivated by relativistic hydrodynamical simulations. Our novel approach unveils two important results. First, partial TDEs can be more abundant than total disruptions by a factor of a few to a few tens. Second, the rates of complete stellar disruptions can be overestimated by a factor of a few to a few tens if one neglects partial TDEs, as we find that many of the events classified as total disruptions in the standard framework are in fact partial TDEs. Accounting for partial TDEs is particularly relevant for galaxies harbouring a nuclear stellar cluster featuring many events coming from the empty loss cone. Based on these findings, we stress that partial disruptions should be considered when constraining the luminosity function of TDE flares; accounting for this may reconcile the theoretically estimated TDE rates with the observed ones.

Analytic model for off-axis GRB afterglow images – geometry measurement and implications for measuring H0

ABSTRACT We present an analytic model for measuring the jet core angle (θc) and viewing angle (θobs) of off-axis gamma-ray bursts independently of the jet angular structure outside of the core. We model the images of off-axis jets, and using this model, we show that θobs and θc can be measured using any two of the three following observables: the afterglow light curve, the flux-centroid motion, and the image width. The model is calibrated using 2D relativistic hydrodynamic simulations with a broad range of jet angular structures. We study the systematic errors due to the uncertainty in the jet structure and find that when using the light curve and centroid motion to determine θobs and θc, our formulae can be accurate to a level of 5–10 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively. In light of the Hubble tension, the systematic error in cos θobs in GRBs originating in a binary compact object merger is of special interest. We find that the systematic uncertainty on the measurement of cos θobs due to the unknown jet structure is smaller than 1.5 per cent for well-observed events. A similar error is expected if the microphysical parameters evolve at a level that is not easily detected by the light curve. Our result implies that this type of systematic uncertainty will not prevent measurement of H0 to a level of 2 per cent with a sample of well-observed GW events with resolved afterglow image motion. Applying our model to the light curve and centroid motion observations of GW170817, we find $\theta _{obs}=19.2\pm 2~\deg$ (1σ) and $\theta _c=1.5-4~\deg$.

Studying the link between radio galaxies and AGN fuelling with relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of flickering jets

ABSTRACT We present two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of ∼kpc-scale AGN jets with mean jet powers in the range 1–7 × 1045 erg s−1, in which the jet power varies (through variation of the Lorentz factor) according to a flicker or pink noise power spectrum. We find the morphology and dynamics of the jet–cocoon system depends on the amplitude of the variability with a clear correspondence between the shape of the cocoon and the historical activity. The jet advances quickly during high-power states, whereas quiescent periods instead produce passive periods of inflation resembling Sedov–Taylor blast waves. Periods of high activity preferentially produce hotspots and create stronger backflow as they maximize the pressure gradient between the jet head and cocoon. The variability can also lead to propagating internal shock structures along the jet. Our work suggests that variability and flickering in the jet power has important implications, which we discuss, for observations of radio galaxies, ultrahigh energy cosmic ray acceleration and jet power to luminosity correlations. We explore the link between morphology and fuelling, and suggest that chaotic cold accretion should introduce a relatively small scatter in radio luminosity (∼0.2 dex) and modest imprints on morphology; sources such as Hercules A and Fornax A, which show evidence for more dramatic variability, may therefore require redder power spectra, or be triggered by mergers or other discrete events. We suggest ways to search for jet flickering observationally and propose that radio galaxies may be an important diagnostic of Myr time-scale AGN fuelling, due to their ‘long-term memory’.

Evolution and explosions of metal-enriched supermassive stars: proton rich general relativistic instability supernovae

ABSTRACT The assembly of supermassive black holes poses a challenge primarily because of observed quasars at high redshift, but additionally because of the current lack of observations of intermediate mass black holes. One plausible scenario for creating supermassive black holes is direct collapse triggered by the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. This scenario allows the creation of supermassive stars with solar metallicity. We investigate the behaviour of metal enriched supermassive stars which collapse due to the general relativistic radial instability during hydrogen burning. These stars contain both hydrogen and metals and thus may explode due to the CNO cycle (carbon–nitrogen–oxygen) and the rp process (rapid proton capture). We perform a suite of stellar evolution simulations for a range of masses and metallicities, with and without mass-loss. We evaluate the stability of these supermassive stars by solving the pulsation equation in general relativity. When the stars becomes unstable, we perform 1D general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations coupled to a 153 isotope nuclear network with cooling from neutrino reactions, in order to determine if the stars explode. If the stars do explode, we post process the nucleosynthesis using a 514 isotope network which includes additional proton rich isotopes. These explosions are characterized by enhanced nitrogen and intermediate mass elements ($16\ge \rm {A}\ge 25$), and suppressed light elements ($8\ge \rm {A}\ge 14$), and we comment on recent observations of super-solar nitrogen in GN-z11.
