Dynamic physiological response of tef to contrasting water availabilities

Global climate change is leading to increased frequency of extreme climatic events, higher temperatures and water scarcity. Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is an underutilized C4 cereal crop that harbors a rich gene pool for stress resilience and nutritional quality. Despite gaining increasing attention as an “opportunity” crop, physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of tef to drought stress have not been sufficiently investigated. This study was aimed to characterize the dynamic physiological responses of tef to drought. Six selected tef genotypes were subjected to high-throughput whole-plant functional phenotyping to assess multiple physiological responses to contrasting water regimes. Drought stress led to a substantial reduction in total, shoot and root dry weights, by 59%, 62% and 44%, respectively (averaged across genotypes), and an increase of 50% in the root-to-shoot ratio, relative to control treatment. Drought treatment induced also significant reductions in stomatal conductance, transpiration, osmotic potential and water-use efficiency, increased chlorophyll content and delayed heading. Tef genotypes exhibited diverse water-use strategies under drought: water-conserving (isohydric) or non-conserving (anisohydric), or an intermediate strategy, as well as variation in drought-recovery rate. Genotype RTC-290b exhibited outstanding multifaceted drought-adaptive performance, including high water-use efficiency coupled with high productivity under drought and control treatments, high chlorophyll and transpiration under drought, and faster drought recovery rate. This study provides a first insight into the dynamic functional physiological responses of tef to water deficiency and the variation between genotypes in drought-adaptive strategies. These results may serve as a baseline for further studies and for the development of drought-resistant tef varieties.

Interactions between an arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum and the root-associated microbiome in shaping the response of Capsicum annuum “Locale di Senise” to different irrigation levels

Abstract Background and aims The use of root-associated microorganisms emerge as a sustainable tool to enhance crop tolerance and productivity under climate change, particularly in drought-affected areas. Here, the impact of an inoculum based on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was evaluated on pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivation at varying water irrigation treatments (well-watered, reduced irrigation and rain-fed) under open-field conditions. Methods Agronomic and ecophysiological parameters, as well as biochemical analyses on stress markers and phytohormones in leaves and on fruit quality traits, were evaluated, along with the shifts in soil- and root-associated microbial communities. Results Rain-fed water treatment caused reduced fruit sizes, while no differences were detected among well-watered and reduced irrigation. Reduced irrigation did not cause a reduction in stomatal conductance. The highest AM fungal colonization rates were observed under reduced irrigation, and the enhanced flavonoid content and reduced oxidative stress markers in AMF-inoculated plants suggested a synergistic effect of AM fungal inoculation in boosting plant tolerance against stress. A shift in microbial community composition in the different irrigation treatments, associated with different enzymatic activity, highlighted the potential role of microbial dynamics in plant stress response under water-limited conditions. Conclusion The study suggests that a reduced irrigation comes along with beneficial impacts on pepper root associated microbes, while not impairing crop performance and yields, indicating a potential of saving water. All together, our results imply that optimization of irrigation and beneficial plant–microbe interactions, such as AM fungal symbiosis, can improve pepper physiological and productivity features under climate change.

Stomatal response to VPD in C4 plants with different biochemical sub-pathways.

C4 NAD-malic enzyme (NAD-ME) species occurs in drier regions and exhibit different drought responses compared to C4 NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) species. However, a physiological mechanism explaining the geographical discrepancies remains uncertain. This study examined gas exchange patterns that might explain different distributions observed between two subtypes of C4 photosynthesis. We measured the response of leaf gas exchange to vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and CO2 in plants from six distinct C4 clades having closely related NAD-ME and NADP-ME species using a Li-Cor 6400 gas exchange system. We found that NAD-ME species exhibited greater relative reductions in stomatal conductance with increases in VPD than NADP-ME species but observed no consistent subtype differences in C4 cycle activity as indicated by the initial slope of the A response to intercellular CO2 concentration. Based on these results, we hypothesise the greater response of gs to increasing VPD may enable NAD-ME plants to outperform NADP-ME plants in hot, dry environments where VPD is normally high.

The Optimum Substrate Moisture Level to Enhance the Growth and Quality of Arugula (Eruca sativa)

Arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) is a nutritious vegetable, commonly used in salads, known for its high glucosinolate content and various health benefits and flavors. However, arugulas may contain -excessive nitrate levels, potentially harmful to human health. We aimed to examine the effect of substrate moisture levels on the growth and quality of arugula under controlled irrigation conditions to investigate a proper irrigation practice for the quality production of arugula. The plants were cultivated using a sensor-based automated irrigation system to maintain the substrate volumetric water content (VWC) levels at 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, and 0.50 m3·m−3 over three weeks (vegetative stage). The treatment with VWC of 0.20 m3·m−3 resulted in reduced shoot growth, primarily attributed to drought-induced constraints on leaf expansion. Despite the initial reductions in stomatal conductance in arugulas subjected to lower VWC treatments, they eventually recovered and exhibited similar stomatal conductance levels across all VWC treatments 15 days after treatment, indicating acclimation to drought stress. The VWC treatment did not affect the nitrate and total glucosinolate contents of arugula, except for a decrease in glucoerucin content observed in the lowest VWC treatment. Maintaining a VWC level at 0.20 m3·m−3 could impair both the growth and quality of arugula due to severe drought conditions. Alternatively, maintaining the VWC at 0.30 m3·m−3 would ensure a high water use efficiency while securing the growth and quality of arugula.

Tight coupling between leaf δ13 C and N content along leaf ageing in the N2 -fixing legume tree black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.).

N2 -fixing legumes can strongly affect ecosystem functions by supplying nitrogen (N) and improving the carbon-fixing capacity of vegetation. Still, the question of how their leaf-level N status and carbon metabolism are coordinated along leaf ageing remains unexplored. Leaf tissue carbon isotopic composition (δ13 C) provides a useful indicator of time-integrated intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi). Here, we quantified the seasonal changes of leaf δ13 C, N content on a mass and area basis (Nmass , Narea , respectively), Δ18 O (leaf 18 O enrichment above source water, a proxy of time-integrated stomatal conductance) and morphological traits in an emblematic N2 -fixing legume tree, the black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), at a subtropical site in Southwest China. We also measured xylem, soil and rainwater isotopes (δ18 O, δ2 H) to characterize tree water uptake patterns. Xylem water isotopic data reveal that black locust primarily used shallow soil water in this humid habitat. Black locust exhibited a decreasing δ13 C along leaf ageing, which was largely driven by decreasing leaf Nmass , despite roughly constant Narea . In contrast, the decreasing δ13 C along leaf ageing was largely uncoupled from parallel increases in Δ18 O and leaf thickness. Leaf N content is used as a proxy of leaf photosynthetic capacity; thus, it plays a key role in determining the seasonality in δ13 C, whereas the roles of stomatal conductance and leaf morphology are minor. Black locust leaves can effectively adjust to changing environmental conditions along leaf ageing through LMA increases and moderate stomatal conductance reduction while maintaining constant Narea to optimize photosynthesis and carbon assimilation, despite declining leaf Nmass and δ13 C.

The legacy of past droughts induces water-sparingly behaviour in Grüner Veltliner grapevines.

Drought is becoming more frequent and severe in numerous wine-growing regions. Nevertheless, limited research has examined the legacy of recurrent droughts, focusing on leaf physiology and anatomy over consecutive seasons. We investigated drought legacies (after 2 years of drought exposure) in potted grapevines, focusing on stomatal behaviour under well-watered conditions during the third year. Vines were subjected for two consecutive years to short- (SD) or long-term (LD) seasonal droughts, or well-watered conditions (WW). In the third year, all plants were grown without water limitation. Water potential and gas exchange were monitored throughout the three seasons, while leaf morpho-anatomical traits were measured at the end of the third year. During droughts (1st and 2nd year), stem water potential of SD and LD plants fell below -1.1 MPa, with a consequent 75% reduction in stomatal conductance (gs ) compared to WW. In the 3rd year, when all vines were daily irrigated to soil capacity (midday stem water potential ~ -0.3 MPa), 45% lower values of gs were observed in the ex-LD group compared to both ex-SD and ex-WW. Reduced midrib vessel diameter, lower leaf theoretical hydraulic conductivity, and smaller stomata were measured in ex-LD leaves compared to ex-SD and ex-WW, likely contributing to the reduced gas exchange. Our findings suggest that grapevines exposed to drought may adopt a more water-conserving strategy in subsequent seasons, irrespective of current soil water availability, with the degree of change influenced by the intensity and duration of past drought events.

Stomatal conductance reduction tradeoffs in maize leaves: A theoretical study.

As the leading global grain crop, maize significantly impacts agricultural water usage. Presently, photosynthesis ( ) in leaves of modern maize crops is saturated with , implying that reducing stomatal conductance ( ) would not affect but reduce transpiration ( ), thereby increasing water use efficiency (WUE). While reduction benefits upper canopy leaves under optimal conditions, the tradeoffs in low light and nitrogen-deficient leaves under nonoptimal microenvironments remain unexplored. Moreover, reduction increases leaf temperature ( ) and water vapor pressure deficit, partially counteracting transpiratory water savings. Therefore, the overall impact of reduction on water savings remains unclear. Here, we use a process-based leaf model to investigate the benefits of reduced in maize leaves under different microenvironments. Our findings show that increases in due to reduction can diminish WUE gains by up to 20%. However, reduction still results in beneficial WUE tradeoffs, where a 29% decrease in in upper canopy leaves results in a 28% WUE gain without loss in . Lower canopy leaves exhibit superior tradeoffs in reduction with 178% gains in WUE without loss in . Our simulations show that these WUE benefits are resilient to climate change.

Effects of elevation on growth, photosynthetic and Ni-accumulation responses in Bornmuellera emarginata (Brassicaeae)

Bornmuellera emarginata is a Balkan Ni-hyperaccumulator indicated as a promising candidate for agromining practices. Here, two elevation-contrasting accessions (250 m, Low Elevation plants LE, and at 1600 m, High Elevation plants, HE) were compared in terms of growth, photosynthetic activity, and Ni accumulation in controlled conditions to assess possible differences exploitable in practical applications. After two months of pot cultivation on garden and serpentine soil, plant biomass, gas exchanges and Ni concentrations were evaluated. A hydroponic trial with increasing NiSO4 concentration was performed to evaluate Ni tolerance and accumulation.Plants grown on serpentine soil showed reduced biomass as compared to those from garden soil, without any difference between LE and HE. In both accessions, growth in serpentine soil resulted in photochemical/biochemical limitations and reduction in stomatal conductance, especially in LE. HE showed low stomatal conductance in all the conditions, despite a greater stomatal density. Shoot Ni accumulation was higher in HE (∼1600 µg Ni g−1 d.w. and 1200 µg Ni g−1 d.w. in HE and LE respectively), thus resulting in a significantly higher metal content per plant in respect to LE (∼120 and ∼85 µg plant−1 in HE and LE respectively). In hydroponics, HE possessed higher Ni tolerance and accumulation in respect to LE.In conclusion underlying the higher shoot metal amount of HE, Ni tolerance seemed to play a pivotal role, overtaking possible negative effects of reduced transpiration rates compared to LE. Our results point to the opportunity of exploring and exploiting the variation in accumulation level among B. emarginata accessions for the implementation of environmental restoration and metal cropping practices.

Interaction with the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana influences tomato phenome and promotes resistance to Botrytis cinerea infection.

Plants are central to complex networks of multitrophic interactions. Increasing evidence suggests that beneficial microorganisms (BMs) may be used as plant biostimulants and pest biocontrol agents. We investigated whether tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants are thoroughly colonized by the endophytic and entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, and how such colonization affects physiological parameters and the phenotype of plants grown under unstressed conditions or exposed to the pathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea. As a positive control, a strain of the well-known biocontrol agent and growth inducer Trichoderma afroharzianum was used. As multitrophic interactions are often driven by (or have consequences on) volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by plants constitutively or after induction by abiotic or biotic stresses, VOC emissions were also studied. Both B. bassiana and T. afroharzianum induced a significant but transient (one to two-day-long) reduction of stomatal conductance, which may indicate rapid activation of defensive (rejection) responses, but also limited photosynthesis. At later stages, our results demonstrated a successful and complete plant colonization by B. bassiana, which induced higher photosynthesis and lower respiration rates, improved growth of roots, stems, leaves, earlier flowering, higher number of fruits and yield in tomato plants. Beauveria bassiana also helped tomato plants fight B. cinerea, whose symptoms in leaves were almost entirely relieved with respect to control plants. Less VOCs were emitted when plants were colonized by B. bassiana or infected by B. cinerea, alone or in combination, suggesting no activation of VOC-dependent defensive mechanisms in response to both fungi.

Interactive effects of atmospheric CO2 concentration and water stress on the phenology and physiology of faba bean (Vicia faba L.)

Crop modelling is a critical tool for assessing the impact of climate change and for evaluating adaptation strategies to ensure the sustainability of agricultural systems. In addition to increased temperature and reduced precipitation, studying the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and water stress on water efficiency of crops is highly relevant for identifying and evaluating impacts and new adaptation measures. We carried out 12 experiments with 4 faba bean cultivars under controlled conditions of [CO2], temperature and water supply. An increase of [CO2] from 430 to 650 ppm caused a 20% reduction in stomatal conductance under optimal irrigation supply but had almost zero effect under water stress conditions. Our study shows that the beneficial effect of a higher atmospheric [CO2] on faba bean growth is counteracted by water stress, with the beneficial effect only detected when proper water management is applied. Thus, stomatal conductance appeared to be more sensitive to water stress than to elevated [CO2], indicating that the beneficial effects of elevated [CO2] on faba bean are largely dependent on the plant water status. This is particularly relevant in Mediterranean agricultural systems, where water shortage associated with droughts will become more frequent, even in areas of irrigation. Although differences in the response between cultivars were observed in our study when the water status was intermediate between optimal and severe drought, no single genotype among those studied will be sufficient to improve or fully guarantee yield under conditions of increasing [CO2] and water shortage. Therefore, the introduction of irrigation and/or sowing date strategies currently represent the only adaptation measures. The gaps in knowledge of the response of faba bean to climate change, and the limited number of adaptation measures available highlight the need for continued research, with breeding of drought-tolerant and high-yielding faba bean genotypes as one of the most promising alternatives.

Quantitative wood anatomy and stable carbon isotopes indicate pronounced drought exposure of Scots pine when growing at the forest edge

Climate change poses a major threat to global forest ecosystems. In particular, rising temperatures and prolonged drought spells have led to increased rates of forest decline and dieback in recent decades. Under this framework, forest edges are particularly prone to drought-induced decline since they are characterized by warmer and drier micro-climatic conditions amplifying impacts of drought on tree growth and survival. Previous research indicated that forest-edge Scots pine trees have a higher growth sensitivity to water availability compared to the forest interior with consequent reduction of canopy greenness (remotely sensed NDVI) and higher mortality rates. Yet, the underlying physiological mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we address this knowledge gap by comparing stable carbon isotope signatures and wood anatomical traits in annual rings of trees growing at the forest edge vs. the forest interior and between trees that either survived or died during the extreme drought of 2015. Our analyses suggest that the exposure to drought of forest-edge Scots pine likely results in a reduction of stomatal conductance, as reflected by a higher δ13C of stem wood, thinner cell walls, and lower mean ring density. Moreover, we found dead trees to feature larger mean hydraulic lumen diameters and a lower cell-wall reinforcement, indicating a higher risk to suffer from cavitation. In conclusion, the typically drier micro-climatic conditions at the forest edge seem to have triggered a larger reduction of stomatal conductance of Scots pine trees, resulting in a lower carbon availability and significantly altered wood anatomical properties under an increasingly drier climate.

Gas exchange in umbu tree accessions

The objective of this work was to evaluate gas exchanges in umbu tree accessions. A 5 × 7 × 2 split-split plot experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design (five accessions – BRS-68, EPAMIG-05, BGU-61, BGU-75, and BGU-50 × seven evaluation dates × two reading times – 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.) with three repetitions. The lower leaf temperatures recorded in BRS-68 and EPAMIG 05 accessions favor higher net photosynthetic rates, water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency compared to BGU 61 accession. Umbu tree regulates transpiration by reducing stomatal conductance under high vapor pressure deficit, although the tree increases transpiration as a defense strategy against heat stress, even with a reduction in stomatal conductance. High temperatures limit instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, photosynthetic rate, and the ratio of photosynthesis to radiation incident on the leaf. Transpiration varies directly with stomatal conductance, while intrinsic water use efficiency varies inversely with internal CO2 concentration.

Sugar Beet Rooting Pattern Mediates Stomatal and Transpiration Responses to Progressive Water Stress

Water stress is the main risk facing sugar beet production in Europe and is expected to worsen with climate change. Therefore, future production essentially depends on the traits that sustain growth during water shortages. In this study, we investigated the interplay of stomatal conductance and transpiration rate as well as the root characteristics of six sugar beet cultivars in a climate chamber experiment under environmental conditions progressing from a non-stressed initial state toward high atmospheric water demand, followed by reduced soil water supply and then by a combination of high demand and low supply. Stomatal conductance quickly responded to changing conditions, dropping from 406.4 to 42.5 mmol m−2 s−1, one order of magnitude, with the transition to reduced soil water availability. The transpiration rate showed a slightly delayed response compared with stomatal conductance, while we observed an inverse influence on the subsequent stomatal behavior exerted by the depletion/conservation of available soil water. The rooting pattern substantially differed among genotypes, predominantly at depths between 60 and 80 cm, where 50.5% of the root length was allocated. Longer roots buffered the effects of the reduction in stomatal conductance at the onset of water supply limitation, with 5.4 mmol m−2 s−1 higher conductance per 100 cm of root length. Therefore, breeding and/or management measures targeting root system vigor are the key to the growth maintenance of sugar beet during dry periods.

Disentangling the impact of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance on rising water-use efficiency at different altitudes on the Tibetan plateau

Tree intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) has dramatically increased in recent decades in global forests. The rising iWUE can be a result of either enhanced photosynthesis rate (A), or decreased stomatal conductance (gs) or both. The underlying physiological mechanisms are still not well understood. Here, we investigated tree-ring isotopes δ13C and δ18O from two tree species in three altitudinal transects on the southeast Tibetan plateau. We found that the relationship between iWUE and ∆18Olw was negative at lower-altitude forests, whereas it was positive at the treeline, indicating that enhanced photosynthesis was the main driver of the increasing iWUE at the treeline, whereas reduction in stomatal conductance was the prime regulator at lower-altitude forests. Furthermore, vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and precipitation during the main growing season showed the highest and significant correlations with leaf water 18O (Δ18Olw) at lower-altitude forests, suggesting that gs was strongly controlled by moisture conditions in the growing season particularly in the lower-altitude forests. These findings shed light to a better understanding of the regulatory mechanism of iWUE changes under the background of rising atmospheric CO2 and climate change and serve to improve the reliability of ecophysiological modeling.

Differential sensitivities of photosynthetic component processes govern oxidative stress levels and net assimilation rates in virus-infected cotton.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leafroll dwarf virus disease (CLRDD) is a yield-limiting threat to cotton production and can substantially limit net photosynthetic rates (AN). Previous research showed that AN was more sensitive to CLRDD-induced reductions in stomatal conductance than electron transport rate (ETR) through photosystem II (PSII). This observation coupled with leaf reddening symptomology led to the hypothesis that differential sensitivities of photosynthetic component processes to CLRDD would contribute to declines in AN and increases in oxidative stress, stimulating anthocyanin production. Thus, an experiment was conducted to define the relative sensitivity of photosynthetic component processes to CLRDD and to quantify oxidative stress and anthocyanin production in field-grown cotton. Among diffusional limitations to AN, reductions in mesophyll conductance and CO2 concentration in the chloroplast were the greatest constraints to AN under CLRDD. Multiple metabolic processes were also adversely impacted by CLRDD. ETR, RuBP regeneration, and carboxylation were important metabolic (non-diffusional) limitations to AN in symptomatic plants. Photorespiration and dark respiration were less sensitive than photosynthetic processes, contributing to declines in AN in symptomatic plants. Among thylakoid processes, reduction of PSI end electron acceptors was the most sensitive to CLRDD. Oxidative stress indicators (H2O2 production and membrane peroxidation) and anthocyanin contents were substantially higher in symptomatic plants, concomitant with reductions in carotenoid content and no change in energy dissipation by PSII. We conclude that differential sensitivities of photosynthetic processes to CLRDD and limited potential for energy dissipation at PSII increases oxidative stress, stimulating anthocyanin production as an antioxidative mechanism.

Economically important species of Asteraceae: An overview of leaf epidermal micro-morphology with respect to water availability

This paper reports the result of a study undertaken with a view to documenting responses of leaf epidermal parameters of three economically important species of the family Asteraceae: Aspilia africana, Chromolaena odorata and Vernonia amygdalina from Nigeria to seasonal water stress. Obtained quantitative data showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in stomata density and index on the abaxial surface in Chromolaena odorata in dry conditions. The increased stomata densities and indices on the adaxial surfaces in Aspilia africana and Vernonia amygdalina in the wet season suggest that CO2 was more taken up. The reduction in stomata size (on both leaf surfaces in the three taxa) in the dry season indicated species' adaptations to dry conditions and reduction in stomatal conductance. Turgescent guard cell in the three species in the wet season indicated stomatal opening, which could, though, be a hormonal response to water availability since transpiration needed to be activated. The ability of Aspilia africana to reduce water loss and defend against herbivores greatly increased in plants that developed in dry conditions by possessing more multicellular trichomes in comparison to wet conditions, while in Vernonia amygdalina, the number increased during the wet season. Water stress had little or no effect on the micro-morphology of anticlinal walls and the shapes and arrangements of the epidermal cells in the three species. This study revealed that investigations into leaf epidermal micro-morphology might be a useful tool to elucidate the multiple mechanisms underlying leaf epidermal structure function in response to water availability.

The potential of proline as a key metabolite to design real-time plant water deficit and low-light stress detector in ornamental plants.

Nowadays, people are interested to use plants, especially air-purifying plants, in residential and other indoor settings to purify indoor air and increase the green area in the building. In this study, we investigated the effect of water deficit and low light intensity on the physiology and biochemistry of popular ornamental plants, including Sansevieria trifasciata, Episcia cupreata and Epipremnum aureum. Plants were grown under low light intensity in the range of 10-15 μmol quantum m-2 s-1 and 3 days of water deficit. The results showed that these three ornamental plants responded to water deficit with different pathways. Metabolomic analysis indicated that water deficit affected Episcia cupreata and Epipremnum aureum by inducing a 1.5- to 3-fold increase of proline and a 1.1- to 1.6-fold increase in abscisic acid compared to well-watered conditions, which led to hydrogen peroxide accumulation. This resulted in a reduction of stomatal conductance, photosynthesis rate and transpiration. Sansevieria trifasciata responded to water deficit by significantly increasing gibberellin by around 2.8-fold compared to well-watered plants and proline contents by around 4-fold, while stomatal conductance, photosynthesis rate and transpiration were maintained. Notably, proline accumulation under water deficit stress could be attributed to both gibberellic acid and abscisic acid, depending on plant species. Therefore, the enhancement of proline accumulation in ornamental plants under water deficit could be detected early from day 3 after water deficit conditions, and this compound can be used as a key compound for real-time biosensor development in detecting plant stress under water deficit in a future study.

Exogenous monoterpenes mitigate H2O2-induced lipid damage but do not attenuate photosynthetic decline during water deficit in tomato.

Although monoterpenes are suggested to mediate oxidative status, their role in abiotic stress responses is currently unclear. A foliar spray of monoterpenes increased antioxidant capacity and decreased oxidative stress of Solanum lycopersicum under water deficit stress. The foliar content of monoterpenes increased with spray concentration indicating foliar uptake of exogenous monoterpenes. Exogenous monoterpene application substantially decreased foliar accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA). However, it appears that monoterpenes prevent the accumulation of reactive oxygen species rather than mitigating subsequent ROS-induced damage. Low spray concentration (1.25mM) proved most effective in decreasing oxidative stress but did not up-regulate the activity of key antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase) even though higher (2.5 and 5mM) spray concentrations did, suggesting a complex role for monoterpenes in mediating antioxidant processes. Furthermore, soil drying caused similar photosynthetic limitations in all plants irrespective of monoterpene treatments, apparently driven by strong reductions in stomatal conductance as Photosystem II efficiency only decreased in very dry soil. We suggest that exogenous monoterpenes may mitigate drought-induced oxidative stress by direct quenching and/or upregulating endogenous antioxidative processes. The protective properties of specific monoterpenes and endogenous antioxidants require further investigation.
