Biohydrogen Production from Waste Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa) Extract Liquid.

Hydrogen creates water during combustion. Therefore, it is expected to be the most promising environmentally friendly energy alternative in the coming years. This study used extract liquid obtained from the waste nigella sativa generated by the black cumin oil industry. The performance of biological hydrogen manufacturing via dark fermentation was investigated in the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) and completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) under the operation conditions of pH 5.0, 4.0, and 6.0 and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 36 and 24 h. The performance of hydrogen manufacturing was determined to be good under an organic loading ratio (OLR) of 6.66 g.nigella sativa extract/L and pH 4.0. According to these conditions, the maximum amount of hydrogen in CSTR and FBR was found to be 20.8 and 7.6 mL H2/day, respectively. The operating process of the reactors displayed that a reduction in HRT augmented biohydrogen manufacturing. The work that used mixed culture found that the dominant microbial population at pH 4.0 involved Hydrogenimonas thermophila, Sulfurospirillum carboxydovorans, Sulfurospirillum cavolei, Sulfurospirillum alkalitolerans, and Thiofractor thiocaminus. No research on waste black cumin extract was found in biohydrogen studies, and it was determined that this substrate source is applicable for biological hydrogen manufacturing.

Modelling and optimizing hydraulic retention time in the biological aeration unit: Application of artificial neural network and particle swarm optimization

The biological aeration unit (BAU) is essential for removing organic and inorganic matter in the wastewater. Microorganisms present in the wastewater are able to remove organic and inorganic matter. The challenge is that the BAU consumes large quantities of energy during the process, due to the constant supply of air for the respiration of microorganisms. The standard hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the BAU is between 4 and 12 h per treatment cycle which is extensive, hence the high levels of energy consumption. The purpose of this study is to optimize the HRT in the BAU, by reducing the operation time of the air pumps/blowers, resulting in less energy consumption per treatment cycle. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm optimizes the HRT in the BAU. Variables in the optimization model are verified using the sensitivity analysis method. The results of the study show a reduction in HRT from 4 to 2.4954 h, which is a 37.6 % energy saving in the BAU. The biggest drivers in the HRT optimization model are energy consumption (61.3 %), airflow rate (36.8 %), and temperature (1.2 %). Therefore, decreasing airflow rate and increasing wastewater temperature reduces HRT in BAU.

Microbial community analysis of membrane bioreactor incorporated with biofilm carriers and activated carbon for nitrification of urine

The integration of powdered activated carbon and biofilm carriers in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) presents a promising approach to address the challenge of long hydraulic retention time (HRT) for nitrification of hydrolysed urine. This study investigated the effect of the incorporation in the MBR on microbial dynamics, focusing on dominant nitrifying bacteria. The results showed that significant shifts in microbial compositions were observed with the feed transition to full-strength urine and across different sludge growth forms. Remarkably, the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria Nitrospira were highly enriched in the suspended sludge. Simultaneously, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, Nitrosococcaceae thrived in the attached biomass, showing a significant seven-fold increase in relative abundance compared to its suspended counterpart. Consequently, the incorporated MBR displayed 36% higher nitrification rate and 40% HRT reduction compared to the conventional MBR. This study provides valuable insights on the potential development of household or building scale on-site nutrient recovery from urine to fertiliser.

Anaerobic Co-digestion of the Liquid Fraction of Food Waste with Waste Activated Sludge

AbstractThe present study investigated the feasibility of the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of condensate, resulting from drying food waste, with Waste Activated Sludge in a pilot scale continuous stirred tank reactor. Different parameters were assessed in order to enhance the AcoD performance; the condensate potency (condensate A: 13 gCOD/L and condensate B: 4 gCOD/L), the volumetric ratio of condensate to WAS (0–67% v/v) and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) (20, 15 and 12 days). The results showed that increasing the condensate content in the feed from 0 to 67% v/v, enhances the organic load removal (up to 41% increased total COD removal) and the bioenergy production (up to 35% increased biomethane production). Moreover, in the case of condensate A, the reduction of HRT from 20 to 15 days enhanced the bioenergy production (up to 19% increased biomethane production) while the reduction of HRT from 20 to 12 days in the case of condensate B did not significantly affect the reactor’s performance. Overall it is concluded that condensate can be safely introduced in existing facilities for anaerobic digestion, while maintaining a more stable operation and improved effluent quality and bioenergy production in comparison with conventional anaerobic sludge digestion. Deciphering the role of hydraulic retention time (HRT) in integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system under aniline stress: Effects on microbial succession and communication

Integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system offered an energy-efficient option for nitrogen removal from aniline wastewater. The regulation of hydraulic retention time (HRT) has been reported to affect the fate of functional microbial communities with different generation cycles, but the role of HRT in IFAS under aniline stress has not been sufficiently revealed. Herein, it was observed that shortening the HRT altered the mechanisms underlying the adaptation of a continuous flow micro-aerated IFAS system to aniline stress, thereby negligibly impacting the removal of aniline. The total nitrogen removal rate in Y2 (HRT = 0.5 day) was 40.28 % higher than Y1 (1 day), and 23.7 % higher than Y3 (0.25 day). This could be attributed to Y2 having an ample supply of electron donors for denitrification compared to Y1, as well as showing weaker stress to inhibit nitrification compared to Y3. Furthermore, with the progressive intensification of stress induced by HRT reduction, microorganisms gradually enhanced their adaptation to aniline. This led to an increased migration of microorganisms towards the inner layers of the biofilm, resulting in enhanced functional complementarity between the sludge and biofilm in Y2. Also, there was a distinct development of autotrophic denitrification, with arenimonas predominant in Y1, and Thauera predominant in Y2 and Y3. Moreover, Y2 possessed a high abundance of functional genes related to the production and reception of quorum sensing signal molecules, which may enhance the electron transport-dependent nitrogen metabolism reaction.

Effect of hydraulic retention time on the performance of sequencing batch reactor under combined stress of ibuprofen and ciprofloxacin

The impacts of changes in hydraulic retention time (HRT) on nitrogen elimination, the activity of sludge and the structure of microbial communities in a sequencing batch reactor under the joint stress of ibuprofen (IBP) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) were investigated. Under the combined stress of IBP (belonged to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and CIP (belonged to antibiotics), the elimination level of ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and the rate of specific ammonia oxidation, specific nitrite oxidation, specific nitrate reduction in activated sludge declined with the shortening of HRT. Under the joint stress of IBP and CIP, the content of polysaccharide (PS) and protein (PN) together with the ratio of PN to PS in the extracellular polymeric substances grew with the shortening of HRT, and the content of aromatic proteins increased significantly, which indicated that aromatic proteins were the major protective response substances to the shortening of HRT. Under the joint stress of IBP and CIP, with the reduction of HRT, and the reduction rate of relative abundance of nitrifying bacteria was more evident than that of denitrifying bacteria. This exploration gives novel thoughts for understanding the impacts of HRT on biological nitrogen removal of wastewater under combined stress of IBP and CIP.

Bioenergy production from swine wastewater based on a combined process of anaerobic dynamic membrane reactor and microalgae cultivation: Feasibility and performance

Enhanced methane production and sustainable reduction of pollutants from anaerobic digestate are crucial for swine wastewater treatment. In this study, anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) was introduced to enhance methane production, then microalgae were cultivated on the digestate for nutrients recovery and lipid production. Results showed that pollutants can be effectively removed under various hydraulic retention time (HRT) conditions during long-term operation. Methanogenesis was enhanced with the reduction of HRT from 20 days to 10 days (0.23 L-CH4/g-CODremoved), but inhibited by shortening HRT to 5 days (0.09 L-CH4/g-CODremoved). Ammonia and phosphate in the digestate were effectively removed after microalgae cultivation. In addition, the highest microalgal biomass and lipid productivity (1.7 g/L and 17.5 mg/(L·d), respectively) were obtained using digestate ratio of 20 %, while microalgal growth was seriously restricted at high digestate content (>50 %). This work provides a prospective pathway for pollutants control and energy production from swine wastewater through integrating of AnDMBR technology with microalgae cultivation.

Continuous co-generation of biohydrogen and biomethane through two-stage anaerobic digestion of hydrothermally pretreated food waste

Increasing accumulation of food waste (FW) exerts pressure on resource conservation and environmental protection, while conventional anaerobic digestion (AD) of raw FW for bioenergy recovery and waste minimization often encounters limitations such as fast acidification and process failure. Herein, mild hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP: 140 °C, 20 min) of raw FW was employed to advance subsequent AD performances in a long-term continuous mode. With a decreased overall hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 30 to 18 days, the two-stage system digesting HTP-treated FW maintained very stable and robust biohydrogen (38.1 mL/gVS) and biomethane (439.6 mL/gVS) co-production, whereas both the two-stage system digesting raw FW and the one-stage system digesting HTP-treated FW exhibited deteriorating trends with significantly lower energy yields by 61.1% and 28.1%, respectively. Microbial community analyses revealed the less involvement of carbohydrate-fermenting and proteolytic microbes in the second-stage biomethane reactors as a result of the enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis of FW through HTP and first-stage biohydrogen fermentation. A proximate energy balance assessment indicated that the energy gain of increased biogas generation offset the extra heat requirement for the HTP of FW, while a significant treatment capacity enhancement of 66.7% was achieved given the HRT reduction from 30 to 18 days through this integrated system.

A comparative study for hybrid UASB reactor performance using polyethylene media and luffa sponge as biofilm support.

This paper study the performance of a lab-scale hybrid up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating low-strength synthetic wastewater using different biofilm supporting materials. Two identical reactors are constructed and operated at constant up-flow velocity of 0.1m/hr., inflow rate of 9.76L/d, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8.26hours. The Start-up phase, using seed sludge for existing wastewater treatment plant, lasted until the efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of both reactors reached 80%. Polyethylene (PE) media are added to one of the reactors and luffa sponge is used in the second reactor. Results show increased COD removal efficiency up to about 90% at 20°C and biogas production rates from 3.8*10-3 till 7.5*10-3m3 CH4/kg CODr using PE media. The COD removal efficiency reaches about 95% at 20°C using luffa sponge and biogas production rates up to 6.5*10 -3m3 CH4/kg CODr are achieved before clogging problem is observed. Effect of HRT reduction, from 8.26 to 4.13hours, on removing clogging is investigated. Reduction in COD removal efficiencies is observed at low ambient temperatures during seasonal variations of 15-25°C. AFM and SEM analysis are used to examine sludge granulation and biofilm formation.

Iron removal from groundwater using granular activated carbon filters by oxidation coupled with the adsorption process

Abstract Granular activated carbon (GAC) is commonly used as an adsorbent for the removal of organic micropollutants. However, little is known about the inorganic pollutant removal using GAC. In this study, GAC was examined for the removal of iron from synthetic groundwater (SGW) using oxidation coupled with an adsorption mechanism. Batch experiments including kinetic and isotherm studies were carried out to find out the adsorption capacity of GAC. A column test was conducted at different phases to identify the influence of the initial concentration of iron, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and air supply to the system. It was observed that the experimental results for the kinetic experiment best fit the pseudo-first-order kinetics model with 88% maximum removal efficiency achieved in 240 min. A reduction in adsorption capacity was observed with the concomitant increase in the weight of GAC, whereas the maximum adsorption capacity of GAC was found to be 0.17mg Fe/g GAC. Column experiments confirmed that the effluent iron concentration reduced from 0.05 to 0.03mg/L when the iron concentration in the influent increased from 1 to 3mg/L. The reduction in HRT from 7 to 3.5h did not significantly affect the iron removal efficiency. The air supply to the system with the flow rate of 3.5L/min did not show any improvement in the iron removal efficiency due to the increased airflow rate. In all cases, the iron level in the effluent satisfied the drinking water quality standard recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) which affirms that GAC filters are more suitable for iron removal from groundwater.

Fate and removal of emerging contaminants in anaerobic fluidized membrane bioreactor filled with thermoplastic gel as biofilm support

The Anaerobic Fluidized Membrane Bioreactor (AnFMBR) is a membrane–based hybrid technology that can overcome the limitations of conventional anaerobic sewage treatment. Although previous studies have demonstrated excellent performance in the removal of conventional organic pollutants, further research into the removal paths of emerging contaminants (ECs) under various operating conditions is required for proper design and development of the AnFMBR technology. Regarding this, the fate of four ECs in a lab-scale AnFMBR filled with thermoplastic gel for biofilm growth was investigated under various Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) conditions. When the HRT was 13 h, diclofenac and 17β-estradiol were efficiently removed at 93% and 72% respectively. Even after an HRT reduction to 6.5 h, the system was still able to maintain high ECs removals (74% for diclofenac and 69% for 17β-estradiol). However, irrespective of HRT operational condition, smaller removals of 17a-ethinylestradiol (37–52%) were observed, while only marginal removals of amoxicillin were achieved (5–29%). Biotransformation was attributed as the main route for ECs removal. The results obtained in this study indicate that the membrane-based hybrid AnFMBR can be used to treat the target ECs without influence on anaerobic process. The technology had better removal efficiency for diclofenac and 17β-estradiol. However, the AnFMBR system exhibits high variability in EC removal and low capacity for amoxicillin removal, implying that a combination of other processes is still required to properly avoid the release of these contaminants into the environment.

Enhancement of wastewater treatment performance using 3D printed structures: A major focus on material composition, performance, challenges, and sustainable assessment

In order to enhance the performance and sustainability of wastewater treatment technologies, researchers are showing keen interest in the development of novel materials which can overcome the drawbacks associated with conventional materials. In this context, 3D printing gained significant attention due to its capability of fabricating complex geometrics using different material compositions. The present review focuses on recent advancements of 3D printing applications in various physicochemical and biological wastewater treatment techniques. In physicochemical treatment methods, substantial research has been aimed at fabricating feed spacers and other membrane parts, photocatalytic feed spacers, catalysts, scaffolds, monoliths, and capsules. Several advantages, such as membrane fouling mitigation, enhanced degradation efficiency, and recovery and reusability potential, have been associated with the aforementioned 3D printed materials. While in biofilm-based biological treatment methods, the use of 3D printed bio-carriers has led to enhanced mass transfer efficiency and microbial activities. Moreover, the application of these bio-carriers has shown better removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (∼90%), total nitrogen (∼73%), ammonia nitrogen (95%), and total phosphorous (∼100%). Although the removal efficiencies were comparable with conventional carriers, 3D printed carriers led to ∼40% reduction in hydraulic retention time, which could significantly save capital and operational expenditures. This review also emphasizes the challenges and sustainability aspects of 3D printing technology and outlines future recommendations which could be vital for further research in this field.

Enhanced methane production coupled with livestock wastewater treatment using anaerobic membrane bioreactor: Performance and membrane filtration properties

The present study introduced a new method for enhanced biomethane production and pollution control of swine wastewater (SW) using anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Results confirmed 35 °C as the optimum temperature for enhanced anaerobic digestion which resulted in relatively higher methane production rate and potential. In AnMBR system, robust pollutants removal and conversion rate were achieved under various hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranging from 20 to 10 days, while the highest methane yield (0.24 L/g-CODremoved) and microbial activity (6.65 mg-COD/g-VSS·h) were recorded at HRT of 15 days. Reduction of HRT to 10 days resulted in serious membrane fouling due to accumulation of extracellularpolymericsubstances(EPS) and cake layer on the membrane. However, cake layer as the dominant membrane foulant could be effectively removed through periodic physical backwash to recover the membrane permeability. Overall, the suggested AnMBR is a promising technology to enhance SW treatment and energy recovery.

PH and hydraulic retention time regulation for anaerobic fermentation: Focus on volatile fatty acids production/distribution, microbial community succession and interactive correlation

Enriching suitable fermentative products by optimizing operation conditions could effectively improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion. In the present study, pH (5.0–6.0) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) (2 h-12 h) were regulated for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production during glucose fermentation in acidogenic continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Results showed that acetate and butyrate dominated during pH regulation. HRT reduction favored butyrate production and formate retainment. Maximum total VFAs production with highest acetate content was achieved at pH of 6.0 and HRT of 6 h. Microbial analysis revealed that Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 was predominant butyrate producer during pH regulation, and Bacteroides was main contributor when HRT shorter than 6 h. In addition to acetyl-CoA pathway, acetate could also be produced via homoacetogenesis by Parabacteroides, UCG-004 and norank_f__Acidaminococcaceae. These results would give guidance for enhancing targeted VFAs products by optimizing operational parameters or bio-augmentation with specific bacteria.

Carboxylic acids production via anaerobic fermentation: Microbial communities’ responses to stepwise and direct hydraulic retention time decrease

Carboxylic acids, traditionally produced from fossil fuels, might be generated from renewable biomass resources via anaerobic fermentation. Considering that the microbial activity of this bioprocess is ruled by the imposed hydraulic retention time (HRT), this investigation explored the relationship between process stability and microbial community. Stepwise and direct HRT reduction strategies were assessed in terms of waste bioconversion into volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Microbial community dynamics revealed a microbial specialization along the HRT decrease. The direct implementation of low HRT resulted in drastic microbial fluctuations, leading to process failure at HRT below 6 days. Stepwise strategy for HRT reduction favored microbial adaptation, supporting maximum bioconversions efficiencies (32 % VFACOD/tCODin) at low HRT values (HRT 4 days). Microbial similarity analysis revealed Clostridiales, Lactobacillales and Bacteroidales orders as keystone microorganisms involved in VFAs production, being responsible for protein degradation and propionic acid accumulation.

Effect of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio on high-rate nitrate removal in an upflow sludge blanket reactor for polluted raw water pre-treatment application

The drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in the developing countries urgently need an efficient pre-treatment for nitrate (NO3−) removal to cope with the increasing NO3− pollution in raw water. An upflow sludge blanket (USB) reactor applied for NO3− removal from domestic wastewater may be adopted by the DWTPs. However, studies on the optimal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) and operation of USB reactor at short hydraulic retention times (HRT) for high-rate polluted raw water pre-treatment are lacking. In this study, we first investigated the optimal C/N for biological NO3− removal in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). An USB reactor was then operated with the optimal C/N for pre-treating synthetic raw water contaminated with NO3− (40 mg N L− 1) to monitor the NO3− removal performance and to examine opportunities for reducing the HRT. After operating the SBR with designed C/N of 4, 3 and 2 g C g− 1 N, we selected C/N of 3 g C g− 1 N as the optimal ratio due to the lower carbon breakthrough and nitrite (NO2−) accumulation in the SBR. The USB reactor achieved complete NO3− and NO2− removal with a lower designed C/N of 2 g C g− 1 N due to the longer sludge retention time when compared with that of SBR (10 d). The high specific denitrification rate (18.7 ± 3.6 mg N g− 1 mixed liquor volatile suspended solids h− 1) suggested a possible HRT reduction to 36 min. We successfully demonstrated an USB reactor for high-rate NO3− removal, which could be a promising technology for DWTPs to pre-treat raw water sources polluted with NO3−.

Influence of HRT and carbon source on the enhancement of nutrient removal in an Anaerobic-Oxic-Anoxic (AOA) system

ABSTRACT The eutrophication and increase in toxicity promoted by the continuous or abundant supply of nutrients in water bodies threaten the safety of drinking water and human health. In this regard, this study proposes the investigation of wastewater treatment focusing on the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in the anaerobic–oxic–anoxic (AOA) system. The AOA system was operated in three different stages to verify the influence of the external carbon source addition in the anoxic reactor and the reduction of hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the anaerobic and oxic reactors for nutrient removal optimization. Results showed that the best performance of the AOA system on nutrient removal was obtained in Stage 3, with the reduction of the HRT in the anaerobic and oxic reactors (HRT = 4 h) while maintaining HRT of 6.4 h in the anoxic reactor with no addition of the external carbon source. Under these conditions, the average removal efficiencies reached 98% for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), 88% for Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN), 81% for Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), and 70% for Total Phosphorus (TP). The results also demonstrate that the highest phosphorus removal efficiency was achieved in the anoxic reactor, thus indicating the occurrence of denitrifying phosphorous removal by Denitrifying Phosphate Accumulating Organisms (DNPAOs). This configuration was efficient regarding the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus; besides, the advantages of this system include robust configuration and excellent performance on the nutrient removal.

Biogas production by co-digestion of municipal wastewater and food waste: Performance in semi-continuous and continuous operation.

Municipal wastewater has recently attracted interest in relation to anaerobic wastewater treatments. Biogas production with co-digestion of mixed substrates has been proposed and has many potential benefits for municipal wastewater. The aim of this research was to assess the performance of biogas production during co-digestion of municipal wastewater and food waste under semi-continuous and continuous operation with various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). A laboratory-scale continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) at room temperature operation (27-32°C) was employed in this research. The highest methane yields of 167.41±66.52, 194.35±85.44, and 214.81±85.44ml/g-Vs were found in semi-continuous mode, respectively, at 30, 10, and 10days of HRTs with a 10:90 ratio of municipal wastewater to food waste (based on TS). Result finding of optimum condition (10days of HRTs) presented a methane yield of 485.58±82.35ml/g with continuous operation. Hence, food waste has practical implications for use as a co-substrate with the optimization condition of HRT and operation mode for biogas production from municipal wastewater. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Food waste has good potential for use as a co-substrate for biogas production from municipal wastewater. HRT reduction from 30 to 10days in semi-continuous, biogas production from municipal wastewater and food waste increased by 59%. Co-digestion of municipal wastewater and food waste with continuous mode and 10days of HRT was the effective biogas production.

Biodegradation of mono azo dye-Reactive Orange 16 by acclimatizing biomass systems under an integrated anoxic-aerobic REACT sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor

This study dealt with the biodegradation of Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) containing wastewater via a novel integrated anoxic-aerobic REACT sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor (SBMBBR). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and biodecolorization from three design schemes pertinent to the effects of (i) dye concentration under stepwise approach, Scheme 1; (ii) dye concentration under shock load approach, Scheme 2 and (iii) hydraulic retention time (HRT) coupled with the increase of biocarrier filling ratio, Scheme 3 were evaluated orderly along the evaluation. A complete biodecolorization and over 97 % of COD removal were attained in Scheme 1. Although both COD removal and biodecolorization in Scheme 2 was deteriorated to approximate 40 % by successive RO16 shocks, the microbial strength in removing RO16 molecules (mg RO16/mg biomass) reflected a two-fold amelioration from 0.015 to 0.0304 as the result of actively metabolic system. The maximum co-substrate uptake also reduced from 100 % to 69 %. At higher biocarrier filling ratio (10 % (v/v)) in Scheme 3, the difference in COD removal and biodecolorization rates reflected an improvement of 0.16 and 0.30 % hour-1, respectively, throughout the anoxic-REACT period. However, the performance changed insignificantly due to the reduction of HRT. The presence of the attached-growth biomass system was of great importance, although the suspended-growth biomass dominated more than 76 % of the biomass system in SBMBBR.

Improving the methane productivity of anaerobic digestion using aqueous extracts from municipal solid waste incinerator ash

This study investigated the effects of mineral waste extracts (MWE) on laboratory-scale two-stage anaerobic digesters treating synthetic organic waste. MWE was prepared as aqueous extracts from different ash samples (incineration bottom ash (IBA), fly ash (FA) and boiler ash (BA) taken from a municipal solid waste incineration plant. At 20 days hydraulic retention time, all three MWE stimulated hydrogen production in their respective acidogenic reactor by around 35% (c.f. control acidogenic reactor), whilst no difference was seen in the methane productivity of the linked methanogenic reactors (average 527 ± 45 mL CH4/g VS, including control methanogenic reactor). Following a step reduction in hydraulic retention time from 20 to 10 days and a doubling of the organic loading rate from 2.5 g to 5 g VS/L. d, no significant change was seen in hydrogen production (p > 0.05) in the acidogenic reactor amended with MWE from IBA and BA, or the control acidogenic reactor. However, the acidogenic reactor receiving MWE from FA had 45% lower hydrogen productivity. The step change in hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates led to the failure of most methanogenic reactors (≤100 mL CH4/g VS), however, the one receiving feed containing MWE from IBA showed stable performance without signs of failure, and had higher volumetric methane productivity, albeit at lower methane yields (370 ± 20 mL CH4/g VS). 16S rRNA analysis using the Illumina sequencing platform revealed acidogenesis by Lactobacillaceae in the acidogenic reactor and syntrophic acetate oxidation by Synergistaceae linked to enrichment of the candidatus genus Methanofastidiosum, in the stable methanogenic reactor receiving MWE from IBA.
