Ecosystem health assessment of East Kolkata Wetlands, India: Implications for environmental sustainability

The East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) in Kolkata, India, span 12,500 ha and are a vital ecological zone providing several benefits, including water purification, flood control, and biodiversity support. This study investigated land use and land cover (LULC) alterations in the EKW from 1991 to 2023, using a random forest (RF) machine learning model. Significant LULC changes were observed over the 32 years, with wetland areas decreasing from 91.2 km2 in 1991 to 33.4 km2 in 2023, reflecting substantial habitat loss and reduced ecosystem services. Conversely, agricultural land expanded from 27.8 km2 to 58.7 km2, driven by economic and food production needs, and built-up areas increased dramatically from 0.2 km2 to 10.5 km2, indicating rapid urbanization. This study evaluated the health, resilience, and ecosystem functionality of EKW by analysing human-induced land use changes and using ecological indicators and landscape metrics. Landscape and class level metrics such as PLAND, largest patch index (LPI), total edge (TE), edge density (ED), number of patches (NP), and patch density (PD) were used to analyse the spatiotemporal dynamics of the wetlands. This study revealed a significant increase in fragmentation, with the number of patches increasing from 2689 in 1991 to 4532 in 2023, despite a consistent decrease in core wetland areas. Ecosystem health indicators, such as the ecosystem structure index (ESI) and landscape deviation degree (LDD), were used to assess landscape metrics and fragmentation changes. The ESI and other metrics revealed significant temporal fluctuations, providing insights into landscape structure, connectivity, and heterogeneity. The ESI improved from 0.87 in 1991 to 1.03 in 2023, indicating enhanced connectivity and diversity. Conversely, the LDD increased from 20.6% to 56.85%, indicating a shift towards impervious surfaces. The vegetation productivity and ecosystem health index (EHI) decreased, indicating biodiversity loss and reduced carbon sequestration. The EHI also dropped from 0.67 to 0.55, signifying ongoing environmental stress. This study emphasizes the need for conservation efforts to maintain the ecological integrity of the EKW amidst urbanization and land use changes and recommends a balanced approach for sustainable urban development and enhanced wetland resilience.

Spartina alterniflora invasion benefits blue carbon sequestration in China

Spartina alterniflora has rapidly and extensively encroached on China’s coastline over the past decades. Among the coastal areas invaded by S. alterniflora, at most 93% are mudflats. However, the effect of S. alterniflora invasion on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks of coastal mudflats has not been systematically studied on a national scale. Here, we quantified the nationwide changes in SOC stocks in coastal mudflats associated with S. alterniflora invasion between 1990 and 2020. We found that S. alterniflora invasion significantly enhanced SOC stocks in coastal China. Nonetheless, the benefit of S. alterniflora invasion of coastal SOC stock may be weakened by continuing human intervention. We found that S. alterniflora invading mudflats added 2.3 Tg SOC stocks to China’s coastal blue carbon, while 1.78 Tg SOC stocks were lost mainly due to human activities, resulted in a net SOC stock gain of 0.52 Tg C. These findings overturned the traditionally thought that S. alterniflora invasion would reduce ecosystem services by highlighting that the historical invasion of S. alterniflora has broadly and consistently enhanced blue carbon stock in coastal China.

Agroecology-based land use/land cover change detection, prediction and its implications for land degradation: A case study in the Upper Blue Nile Basin

This study examined land use/land cover (LULC) changes in Chemoga watershed of the Upper Blue Nile Basin, comprising four distinct agroecological regions: Wet Wurch, Moist Dega, Moist Weyna Dega, and Moist Kolla. We used multi-temporal Landsat images from 1985 to 2020, a hybrid classification method and the Cellular Automata-Markov model to analyze historical and predict future (2020–2060) LULC changes under business-as-usual (BAU) and land conservation (LC) scenarios. Magnitudes and patterns of spaciotemporal LULC changes were analyzed using intensity analysis. Cropland expanded across all agroecologies from 1985 to 2020, with Moist Kolla experiencing the highest increase at the expense of woodland, due the introduction of commercial farming to this hotter, less populated and inaccessible area. Moist Dega exhibited the highest allocation changes within cropland and forest, attributable to farmers’ adoption of rotational land use to rehabilitate extensively degraded cultivated lands. Under the BAU scenario, projections suggest further cropland expansion at expense of woodland in Moist Kolla and built-up areas at the expense of cropland and grassland in Moist Dega. Under the LC scenario, forest cover is expected to increase at the expense of cropland across all agroecologies. The historical and projected BAU LULC change scenario substantially increased soil erosion and reduced ecosystem services. These effects can be minimized if LC scenario is properly implemented. The agroecology-based LULC intensity analysis reveals local drivers of change and associated impacts, providing vital insights for targeted land use planning in this study watershed and other watersheds facing similar challenges.

‛Trophic switch' by catfish community from predation to scavenging modulated by human food discard in an estuarine bay.

Benthic predatory catfishes are voracious and opportunistic predators and can easily shift their diet according to the availability of prey. In this study, feeding ecology of catfishes from two adjacent habitats of an estuarine bay is compared. The lower bay was relatively pristine as compared to the upper bay and was represented by two families of catfishes-Plotosidae and Ariidae, while the upper bay represented only ariid catfishes. Gut content analysis revealed that catfish predators from lower bay consumed conventional prey like teleosts and benthic invertebrates with a linear pattern of ontogenetic dietary shift. Plicofollis dussumieri and Plotosus canius occupied the position of top predators in the lower bay and were specialized feeders. Other predators like Plotosus lineatus, Arius arius, Arius jella, and Arius maculatus were generalist feeders occupying the position of mesopredators. However, in the upper bay, the catfish predators represented by Arius maculatus, Arius jella, and Arius arius predominantly fed on human discarded food. The easily available human food in the form of chicken, corn, and rice as noted from the investigated guts shows altered trophic guilds of ariid catfishes wherein only mid to large-sized catfish community was noted in this bay. A distinct "trophic switch" altered the trophic function from predation to scavenging which was observed in their feeding behavior. The anthropogenic impact in the form of unmanaged organic waste alters the role of predatory catfishes thereby restructuring the food web that may lead to unknown changes in the estuarine benthic ecosystems resulting in reduced ecosystem services.

Tissue nutrient contents of the red alga Ellisolandia elongata as a tool to assess the ecological status in NW Mediterranean coastal waters

Eutrophication is a major threat to aquatic ecosystems because excessive nutrient enrichment may result in biodiversity loss, profound functional changes and reduction of ecosystem services. Unless several water quality indexes have been developed following the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), there is still room for improvement. In particular, the stress-tolerant articulated red coralline alga Ellisolandia elongata (=Corallina elongata) is dominant in a wide range of environmental conditions, hampering a proper evaluation of the water quality of some of these places. Here we have checked whether E. elongata can be used as a eutrophication bioindicator by measuring the tissue phosphorus and nitrogen contents. Our results detect an increase in tissue nutrient contents in E. elongata along a gradient of nutrient enrichment and, thus, it can be used as bioindicator of water quality status. Their measurement will allow a more accurate water quality assessment in places dominated by E. elongata where WFD compliant indexes based whether on species/assemblages presence and/or abundance do not provide enough resolution.

Projected increases in extreme drought frequency and duration by 2040 affect specialist habitats and species in Scotland

Abstract Climate‐driven increases in drought occurrence are an overlooked risk in temperate climates, which may be less resilient to water scarcity than arid habitats. Scotland provides an example of a temperate oceanic climate in which drought risk is understudied, but could have substantial ecological impacts, particularly in combination with additional stressors. We modelled changes to risk of extreme drought occurrence in Scotland, and considered potential impacts of these changes on two key habitats, ombrotrophic (precipitation fed) wetlands and temperate rainforest. Using temperature and precipitation data from the UK Climate Projections 2018 and the drought index Standardized Precipitation‐Evapotranspiration Index, we calculated and mapped likely changes in extreme drought for the near future (2021–2040) in comparison to a baseline (1981–2001). We found likelihood of extreme drought events increased from an average of one event every 20 years in the baseline period, to one event every 3 years by 2040. Typical events were projected to be up to 2–3 months longer, with an average of 11 extra drought months per decade. Increases were projected throughout the country, but the effect was most severe in the east, and during autumn. Ombrotrophic wetlands have some level of adaptive resilience to drought, but are considered at high risk as several key sites are in drought hotspot areas. In contrast, Scotland's temperate rainforest is located in lower risk areas, but is typically less drought resilient. Potential impacts on these habitats include reductions in ecosystem services including carbon capture, reduced breeding success for multiple taxa and increased competition among plant communities, which threatens drought‐sensitive species. These projections suggest that climate‐driven drought risk is a significant and imminent threat, even in wet climates. In Scotland, the results can direct mitigation and management actions to areas likely to be at greatest risk, as well as informing conservation interventions that can cope with drought. Additionally, other areas with a temperate oceanic climate may be at risk of extreme drought and could experience similar consequences. Therefore, these results have implications both for facilitating improved resilience to extreme drought in Scotland and for potentially overlooked impacts of drought in oceanic climates elsewhere.

Removing Human Bottlenecks in Bird Classification Using Camera Trap Images and Deep Learning

Birds are important indicators for monitoring both biodiversity and habitat health; they also play a crucial role in ecosystem management. Declines in bird populations can result in reduced ecosystem services, including seed dispersal, pollination and pest control. Accurate and long-term monitoring of birds to identify species of concern while measuring the success of conservation interventions is essential for ecologists. However, monitoring is time-consuming, costly and often difficult to manage over long durations and at meaningfully large spatial scales. Technology such as camera traps, acoustic monitors and drones provide methods for non-invasive monitoring. There are two main problems with using camera traps for monitoring: (a) cameras generate many images, making it difficult to process and analyse the data in a timely manner; and (b) the high proportion of false positives hinders the processing and analysis for reporting. In this paper, we outline an approach for overcoming these issues by utilising deep learning for real-time classification of bird species and automated removal of false positives in camera trap data. Images are classified in real-time using a Faster-RCNN architecture. Images are transmitted over 3/4G cameras and processed using Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) to provide conservationists with key detection metrics, thereby removing the requirement for manual observations. Our models achieved an average sensitivity of 88.79%, a specificity of 98.16% and accuracy of 96.71%. This demonstrates the effectiveness of using deep learning for automatic bird monitoring.

Trade-Offs and Synergies between Ecosystem Services Provided by Different Rural Landscape

Ecosystems in rural areas play a crucial role in promoting human well-being and economic development by providing essential resources such as food, water, raw materials, and energy. Furthermore, rural ecosystems offer various services, such as recreational opportunities, climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and environmental mitigation. However, a narrow focus on provisioning services has led to the standardisation of landscapes, decreased levels of biodiversity and reduced ecosystem services in several areas. Moreover, diverse rural landscapes can enrich the provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services. While much research has explored the relationship between land use, landscape, and ecosystem services, there is still a need to better understand the trade-offs and synergies between these factors in providing ecosystem services. To address this gap, we conducted an empirical analysis of the perception of ecosystem services provided by different rural landscapes in the Tuscany region. Specifically, we used the concept of morphotypes, which describes ‘invariants’ that distinguish six different rural landscape typologies in the region. We surveyed 28 experts to identify rural landscape contributions to 17 ecosystem services. Our results provide empirical evidence and insight into the mechanisms necessary to align the provision of ecosystem services by rural landscapes with current and future needs.

Current anthropogenic warming threatens shallow Lake ecosystems on the Tibetan plateau: A palaeolimnological study covering the past 1,600 years in Genggahai Lake

Abstract The Tibetan Plateau has ∼1,200 lakes larger than 1 km2 with a total area of ~46,000 km2. The annual mean air temperature of the Tibetan Plateau has increased 2.5°C over the past 60 years. Lakes in this region are extremely responsive to climate changes as a result of their low biodiversity and simple food webs. However, it is unclear whether the current anthropogenic warming will benefit or threaten the aquatic ecosystems in this region. We assessed patterns of change associated with climate change in a shallow, freshwater lake (Genggahai Lake) on the NE Tibetan Plateau over the past ~1,600 years based on diverse aquatic fossils (macrophytes, molluscs, cladocerans and diatoms), total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) of a sediment core. The abundances of macrophytes, molluscs and cladocerans, and the concentrations of TOC and TN in the sediments were high during the Mediaeval Warm Period (MWP, ~940–1,410 CE) but low during the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP, ~390–940 CE) and the Little Ice Age (LIA, ~1,410–1970 CE), suggesting that modest natural warming was associated with the biomass of macrophytes and consumers in the food web. By contrast, low abundance of macrophytes and high abundance of planktonic diatoms were recorded in the sediments during the Current Warm Period (CWP, ~1970–2020 CE). Current anthropogenic warming has resulted in significantly higher temperatures than during the MWP, associated with the development of planktonic algae rather than macrophytes. Our findings show that the current anthropogenic warming, coupled with increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition and activated nutrients from thawed permafrost, is associated with phytoplankton dominance in lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, and may lead to significant reductions in ecosystem services provided by the lakes.

Using Scenario Building and Participatory Mapping to Negotiate Conservation-Development Trade-Offs in Northern Ghana

In multifunctional landscapes, expanding economic activities jeopardise the integrity of biodiverse ecosystems, generating conservation-development trade-offs that require multi-stakeholder dialogue and tools to negotiate conflicting objectives. Despite the rich literature on participatory mapping and other tools to reveal different stakeholder perspectives, there is limited evidence on the application of such tools in landscape-scale negotiations. This paper addresses this gap by analysing a participatory mapping process in Ghana’s Western Wildlife Corridor, where a community-based landscape governance system called the community resource management area (CREMA) exists. Data from three participatory mapping workshops and focus group discussions with community and institutional actors reveal that increasing demand for food and natural resources and climate change impacts are drivers of landscape degradation, resulting in declining faunal and floral biodiversity and reduced ecosystem services. Meanwhile, community actors prioritise the expansion of farming land, while institutional actors prioritise forest conservation. However, scenario building and participatory mapping helped communicate each other’s aims and reach a negotiated consensus. Finally, power relations, cultural and traditional rules, and differences in knowledge affected deliberations and decision-making. We conclude that scenario building and participatory mapping can contribute to an inclusive landscape approach, provided that well-functioning multi-stakeholder platforms are in place and facilitators adequately navigate power imbalances and recognise different kinds and degrees of knowledge.

Reconciling the control of the native invasive Jacobaea aquatica and ecosystem multifunctionality in wet grasslands

Grasslands are managed to provide multiple goods and services. During recent decades, abandonment of marginal grasslands and intensification of the most productive sites resulted in biodiversity losses and reduced ecosystem services (ESs). Moreover, invasion by unwanted plants impaired ESs, as seen in Jacobaea aquatica, a poisonous native invader in pre-alpine grasslands of Central Europe. Invasion by this plant compromises fodder quality and endangers animal health, resulting in abandonment of grassland use. We tested different management regimes to reduce J. aquatica in wet grasslands of Southern Germany and assessed how its regulation affects grassland multifunctionality. We monitored indicators associated with productivity and conservation, such as the abundance of J. aquatica, forage quality, yield, abundance of specialists, and pollinator-relevant plants. Intensive management favoured multifunctionality by promoting productivity and biodiversity, yet also increasing the abundance of J. aquatica. Reduced management regulates J. aquatica cover close to an acceptable threshold while also reducing ESs. Thus, we conclude that moderate management strikes a balance between the control of the poisonous plant and the supply of grassland multifunctionality.

Evaluating earthworms as candidates for remediating pesticide contaminated agricultural soil: A review

Alterations of soil characteristics that result in reduction in ecosystem services invariably cause soil quality degradation. Such changes could be caused due to a variety of stressors, which might be physical, chemical, or biological and come from both anthropogenic and natural causes. Out of the wide variety of soil pollutants, agrochemicals contaminate soil biota the most. Numerous research’ findings have confirmed that soil has been the most preferred site for the disposal of xenobiotics and therefore is likely to be the source of contamination for other natural resources like ground and surface waters. The ecological risk associated with contaminated soils depends on many physicochemical and biological processes that govern the transport and transformation of pesticides. Nevertheless, the persistence of pesticides in soil is a serious threat to both below and above ground organisms which play key roles in sustaining soil functions. One of the viable methods to decontaminate soil is by utilizing living soil biota selectively. This process called. Bioremediation has traditionally been employed to remove chemical residues from soil or to lessen their toxicity levels. Although microbes have been extensively used for bioremediation, chemical breakdown and remediation are significantly aided by certain dominant soil fauna, such as earthworms. Since they modify soil quality, earthworms are regarded as soil engineers. Earthworms can participate in the degradation of pesticide residues, either directly through the release of detoxifying enzymes in their gut or indirectly through their positive influence on microbial populations which could degrade pesticides. The earthworm supported pesticide degradation is largely confined to the gut microenvironment and the soil processed by the worms. The impact of earthworm species on pesticide degradation is widely variable which could be related to their feeding habits and microhabitats. Molecular docking studies have provided evidence in support of binding of organic molecules with agrochemicals. High level of organic matter in soil is expected to increase the binding of hydrophobic pesticides to organic ligands with consequent reduction in their bioavailability to microorganisms and increasing their persistence. Activities of earthworms is likely to induce growth of aerobic microbes capable of pesticide degradation. Among the various earthworm species, Lumbricus terrestris, Perionyx excavatus and Metaphire posthuma have shown promising results as remediating agents of pesticides contaminating farm soils. The present article focuses on the remediation process of hazardous pesticide polluted soil using biological agent like earthworm. This approach may be both efficient and environmentally beneficial.

Evaluation of the Extent of Land Use-Land Cover Changes of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria from 1987-2019

Human growth and development occur at the expense of our natural resources. The ancient city of Benin, the capital of Edo State, Nigeria has been experiencing a surge in population hence this study was initiated to evaluate the extent of land use-land cover (LULC) changes over a 32-year period (1987-2019), using remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. USGS Landsat data were acquired for 1987, 2002, and 2019, pre-processed and classified using ENVI 5.2 software and exported into ARC-GIS platform for further analysis. The results of the 1987-2019 LULC classifications were also used to forecast Benin City's LULC for 2050 using the Markov and CA-Markov models in TerrSet 17.0 software. The results showed that 284.56 km2 of forest lands were lost over a 32-year period (1987-2019), while built-up and barren lands increased rapidly by 153.96km2 and 81.58km2, respectively. By 2050, the built-up area is expected to increase by 236.92km2, while barren land is expected to maintain its percentage cover. Grassland increased by 52.16 km2, while water decreased by 3.60 km2, both of these classes are expected to decrease by 157.58km2 and 0.45km2 by 2050, respectively. The increase in population and built-up areas in Benin City contributes to deforestation and increased urban heat, as well as reduced ecosystem services and biodiversity loss. As a result, it is recommended that the Benin City Urban Planning Authority encourage the planting of ornamental trees, shrubs, and lawns in order to restore more carbon sequestration to the ecosystem and thus reduce global warming.

Spatial patterns of environmental degradation and demographic changes in the Mediterranean fringes

Environmental and climatic factors contribute to the range of causes of increased socioecological conflicts, especially in the transcontinental transition areas. However, knowledge of the precise extent and patterns of environmental change driving social and migratory mutations in these areas is still quite limited. This article shows that the Mediterranean transition fringe will undergo climatic-environmental degradation except from four scattered areas of abundance which are likely to be more affected by human activity by 2050. Through an integral socioecological approach, it was found that long droughts are likely to alternate with sporadic intense storms with an impact on the loss of biodiversity, degradation of biocultural heritage, and reduction of ecosystem services. Forced migration trends towards areas of abundance have been identified according to particularly stressful divergent flows at European borders (Turkey and Morocco). The need for increased international cooperation and cross-cultural exchange is foreseen to identify and address common challenges.

Hurricane driven changes in vegetation structure and ecosystem services in tropical urban yards: a study case in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Urban forests are valuable spaces for species conservation, protection of local biodiversity and provision of ecosystem services. However, they are also vulnerable to the impact of extreme climate events like hurricanes. Understanding how urban forests are responding to hurricane disturbances is crucial to improve their design, management, and resilience. Here we analyzed pre-and post-hurricane vegetation surveys in 52 residential yards in San Juan to assess urban forest responses after Hurricanes Irma and María impacted Puerto Rico in 2017. We used these surveys to compare vegetation structure and composition (including species-specific mortality and damage rates) and to quantify changes in the ecosystem services provided by these yards. We found that hurricane disturbances significantly altered the structure but not the composition of yard vegetation. We detected a 27% reduction and 31% mortality of standing stems, and a significant reduction in plants health. Yard species composition was dominated by non-native species and this trend did not change with hurricane disturbance. Changes in vegetation structure translated into substantial reductions in ecosystem services. Food provision, an important service provided by a large proportion of yards before the hurricane, reported the highest reduction (41.9%) while carbon storage was the service that changed the least (9%). Our combined results emphasize the key role played by residential yards providing ecosystem services in tropical cities and call for further efforts to manage private and public urban forests in ways that may ensure their resilience to mitigate extreme climate events, provide multiple ecosystem services, and promote long-term urban sustainability.

Mercury drives microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality across a Hg contamination gradient in rice paddies

Soil microbial communities are critical for maintaining terrestrial ecosystems and fundamental ecological processes. Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal that is toxic to microorganisms, but its effects on microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality in rice paddy ecosystems remain largely unknown. In the current study, we analyzed the microbial community structure and ecosystem multifunctionality of paddy soils across a Hg contamination gradient. The results demonstrated that Hg contamination significantly altered the microbial community structure. The microbial communities were predominantly driven by deterministic selection rather than stochastic processes. The random forest model and variation partition analysis demonstrated that the Hg level was the most important predictor of microbial profiles. Ecosystem multifunctionality decreased across the Hg concentration gradient, and multifunctionality was significantly correlated with soil biodiversity, suggesting that Hg-induced reductions in soil biodiversity led to reduced ecosystem services. A structural equation model showed that Hg contamination directly and indirectly affected ecosystem multifunctionality. The present work broadens our knowledge of the assembly of the microbiome in rice paddies across a Hg contamination gradient and highlights the significance of soil biodiversity in regulating ecosystem functions, especially in Hg-polluted rice paddies.

Modelling Land Use and Land Cover in the Transboundary Mono River Catchment of Togo and Benin Using Markov Chain and Stakeholder’s Perspectives

Integrating both modeling approach and stakeholders’ perspectives to derive past and future trends of land use land cover (LULC) is a key to creating more realistic results on LULC change trajectories and can lead to the implementation of appropriate management measures. This article assessed the past changes of LULC in the Mono River catchment using Landsat images from the years 1986, 2000, 2010, and 2020 by performing Machine Learning Classification Method Random Forest (RF) technique, and using Markov chain method and stakeholder’s perspective to simulate future LULC changes for the years 2030 and 2050. LULC was classified as savanna, cropland, forest, water bodies, and settlement. The results showed that croplands and forests areas declined from 2020 to 2050 with decreases of −7.8% and −1.9%, respectively, a modest increase in settlement (1.3%), and savanna was the dominant LULC in the study region with an increase of 8.5%. From stakeholders’ perspective, rapid population growth, deforestation, rainfall variability/flood, urbanization, and agricultural expansion were the most important drivers associated with the observed LULC changes in the area. Other factors, such as lack of political commitment, distance to river, and elevation were also mentioned. Additionally, most the land-use scenarios identified by stakeholders would intensify land degradation and reduce ecosystem services in the area. By considering all of these potential LULC changes, decision-makers need to develop and implement appropriate solutions (e.g., land use planning strategies, reforestation campaigns, forest protection measures) in order to limit the negative effects of future LULC changes.

A nature-based solution in forest management to improve ecosystem services and mitigate their trade-offs

The use of monoculture plantations for the restoration of forests has increased worldwide, but this approach may reduce ecosystem services (ESs) and result in ES trade-offs, posing great difficulties for ecosystem management. There is often a trade-off between provisioning services (PSs) and regulating and habitat services (RHSs). Coordinating ES trade-offs through scientific and effective management is key to achieving sustainable development and improving human well-being. In this study, bamboo forest, a monoculture plantation type, was studied in Anji County, China. The Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model was used to evaluate product provision (PP), flood mitigation (FM), soil conservation (SC), nitrogen retention (NR), phosphorus retention (PR), carbon storage (CS), and habitat quality (HQ). A forest conservation (FC) scenario was established to explore the impact of bamboo forest expansion on ESs. The grain for green (GFG) scenario and the intercropped bamboo forest (IBF) scenario (a nature-based solution) were developed to reduce or eliminate ES trade-offs. The results showed that the expansion of bamboo forests led to an increase in PP (+13.71%) and declines in FM (−2.23%), CS (−15.69%), SC (−3.63%), NR (−30.14%), PR (−9.16%), and HQ (−11.84%). The GFG scenario greatly increased multiple ESs (but not PP) but strengthened the trade-offs between PSs and RHSs. IBF was able to generate income (+66.89%), improve a variety of ESs (FM, +10.01%; CS, +22.09%; SC, +52.56%; NR, +28.48%; PR, +19.17%; HQ, +17.89%), and eliminate ES trade-offs. Intercropping vegetation can increase the economic income from bamboo forests and enhance ESs by providing crops and increasing canopy structure, aboveground biomass, root systems and litter. Some suggestions are proposed to improve plantation forest management. This study can serve as a reference for forest management in plantation regions within and beyond China.

Social adaptation can reduce the strength of social–ecological feedbacks from ecosystem degradation

Abstract Feedbacks between people and ecosystems are central to the study of social–ecological systems (SES) but remain poorly understood. It is commonly assumed that changes in ecosystems leading to a reduction in ecosystem services will trigger human responses that seek to restore service provision. Other responses are possible, however, but remain less studied. We evaluated the effect of environmental change, specifically the degradation of coral reefs, on the supply of and demand for a cultural ecosystem service (CES); that is, recreation. We found that declines in coral cover reduced demand for recreational ecosystem services but had no apparent effect on the benefits received from recreation. While this finding seems counter‐intuitive given previous experimental data that suggest ecosystem quality affects people's satisfaction, our analysis suggests that social adaptation could have mediated the anticipated negative impact of environmental change on CES benefits. We propose four mechanisms that may explain this effect and that require further research: spatial diversification; (service) substitution; shifting baselines; and time‐delayed effects. Our findings emphasize the importance of human culture and perception as influences on human responses to environmental change, and the relevance of the more subjective elements of social systems for understanding social–ecological feedbacks. Assessing the temporal-spatial dynamic reduction in ecosystem services caused by air pollution: A near-real-time data perspective

Air pollution is impacting ecosystem services (ES). This paper proposes an emergy-based method framework to assess the dynamic impacts of near-real-time air pollution on ES at different temporal-spatial scales. The paper presents the cases of Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing and Baoding, China, investigates the impacts of air pollution on the ES in 2020. In particular, we compared the reduction in ES evaluated using either average (R1) or near-real-time (R2) air pollution data. The results indicate that the differences between R1 and R2 range from about 9% (for Baoding) to almost 45% (for Shenzhen), thus implying the underestimation of the impacts of air pollution on ES based on average data. The ratios of the reduction in ES to the average ES per hour are near-real-time dynamic, with the values of 0–231.62%, 0–59.42%, 0–50.51%, and 0–35.26% in Shanghai, Baoding, Beijing and Shenzhen respectively. Although the air quality in Shanghai is aggregately better than that in Baoding in 2020, the reduction in ES caused by air pollution in Shanghai is more than twice as that of in Baoding, emphasizing the necessity of investigating the impacts of near-real-time air pollution to properly reveal and assess the potential ecological risks. The ratio of the annual total reduction in ES to the annual total ES, near-real-time reduction in ES to the average ES per hour, and near-real-time reduction in ES to the near-real-time ES in Beijing are 7.22%, 0–50.51% and 0–219.27% respectively, highlighting the significance of near-real-time monitoring of air pollution and ES to reveal the potential or hidden impacts of air pollution on ES, and further to facilitate more high time-efficient and fine ecosystem management and conservation.
