The impact of multi-decadal changes in VOC speciation on urban ozone chemistry: a case study in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Abstract. Anthropogenic non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the United Kingdom have been substantially reduced since 1990, which is, in part, attributed to controls on evaporative and vehicle tailpipe emissions. Over time, other sources with a different speciation (for example, alcohols from solvent use and industry processes) have grown in both relative importance and, in some cases, in absolute terms. The impact of this change in speciation and the resulting photochemical reactivities of VOCs are evaluated using a photochemical box model constrained by observational data during a summertime ozone event (Birmingham, UK) and apportionment of sources based on the UK National Atmospheric Emission Inventory (NAEI) data over the period 1990–2019. Despite road transport sources representing only 3.3 % of UK VOC emissions in 2019, road transport continued being the sector with the largest influence on the local O3 production rate (P(O3)). Under case study conditions, the 96 % reduction in road transport VOC emissions that has been achieved between 1990 and 2019 has likely reduced daytime P(O3) by ∼ 1.67 ppbv h−1. Further abatement of fuel fugitive emissions was modeled to have had less impact on P(O3) reduction than abatement of VOCs from industrial processes and solvent use. The long-term trend of increased emissions of ethanol and methanol has somewhat weakened the benefits of reducing road transport emissions, increasing P(O3) by ∼ 0.19 ppbv h−1 in the case study. Abatement of VOC emissions from multiple sources has been a notable technical and policy success in the UK, but some future benefits (from an ozone perspective) of the phase-out of internal combustion engine passenger cars may be offset if domestic and commercial solvent use of VOCs continue to increase.

211 Analysis of microbial communities from a commercial-size swine manure pit and their association with production of volatile organic compounds

Abstract Global pollution and emission concerns have been linked to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Indeed, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) warns that there is a significant danger to human health, soil, and water quality from CAFOs. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are amongst air contaminants that pose a serious risk, are abundantly produced in swine manure pits. While VOC emissions from swine manure have been well studied, the microbial species responsible for their production remain mostly uncharacterized. Thus, a deeper comprehension of the microorganisms responsible for VOC production in swine manure pits may help in the development of management approaches that target the microbiome in these environments. In this context, this study aimed to identify the major bacterial species populating the manure pit of a commercial-size swine wean-to-finish research facility. Manure collected from two sampling locations at different time points were analyzed using the 16S rRNA gene through PCR-amplification of the V1-V3 regions from microbial genomic DNA, followed by Illumina MiSeq 2X300 sequencing. An analysis of the most highly represented microorganisms identified 24 bacterial Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs), with only four showing a species-level nucleotide sequence identity to currently known or valid species. As these results indicated that the majority of bacterial species from this manure pit were unknown, a metagenomics approach was used to assemble partial to full length genomes from the two most abundant OTUs: Pit_9-00239 [5.09% - 19.44%; Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum (96.60%)] and Pit_ 7-00035 [5.58% - 17.30%; Bacteroides eggerthii (87.66%)]. From genome assembly analysis, 979 contigs were generated for a combined length of 12,367,510 bp, which together included 21,776 coding sequences. Predicted metabolic functions from these contig sets included pathways involved in carbohydrate utilization (glycolysis), vitamin synthesis (riboflavin), and butyrate production (volatile fatty acids). Notably, an enzyme responsible for the production of indole, a common VOC produced from swine manure pits, was also identified. Together, the results from this analysis provide insights on metabolic capabilities of abundant bacterial species from manure pits. These can in turn be used for the future development of management strategies or products that can reduce VOC emissions that result from swine CAFO manure storage.

Numerical Simulation of Flow Characteristics for Supercritical CO2-Sprayed Polyurethane Resin.

Conventional paint spraying processes often use small molecule organic solvents and emit a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are highly toxic, flammable, and explosive. Alternatively, the spraying technology using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as a solvent has attracted attention because of its ability to reduce VOC emissions, but the flow characteristics of coatings have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, we numerically simulate the spraying process based on the actual process of scCO2 spraying polyurethane coatings by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The effects of inlet pressure and volume fraction of scCO2 on the fluid motion parameters inside the nozzle as well as the atomization effect of droplets outside the nozzle are investigated. The simulated results show that a fluid with a large volume fraction of scCO2 will obtain a smaller density, resulting in a larger velocity and a larger distance for the spray to effectively spray. Higher coating content and bigger inlet pressures will result in higher discrete phase model (DPM) concentrations, and thus a bigger inlet pressure should be used to make the droplets more uniform across the 30° spray range. This study can provide theoretical guidance for the process of scCO2-sprayed polyurethane resin.

Impacts of ethanol blended fuels and cold temperature on VOC emissions from gasoline vehicles in China

The Chinese central government has initiated pilot projects to promote the adoption of gasoline containing 10%v ethanol (E10). Vehicle emissions using ethanol blended fuels require investigation to estimate the environmental impacts of the initiative. Five fuel formulations were created using two blending methods (splash blending and match blending) to evaluate the impacts of formulations on speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaust emissions. Seven in-use vehicles covering China 4 to China 6 emission standards were recruited. Vehicle tests were conducted using the Worldwide Harmonized Test Cycle (WLTC) in a temperature-controlled chamber at 23 °C and −7 °C. Splash blended E10 fuels led to significant reductions in VOC emissions by 12%–75%. E10 fuels had a better performance of reducing VOC emissions in older model vehicles than in newer model vehicles. These results suggested that E10 fuel could be an option to mitigate the VOC emissions. Although replacing methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) with ethanol in regular gasoline had no significant effects on VOC emissions, the replacement led to lower aromatic emissions by 40%–60%. Alkanes and aromatics dominated approximately 90% of VOC emissions for all vehicle-fuel combinations. Cold temperature increased VOC emissions significantly, by 3–26 folds for all vehicle/fuel combinations at −7 °C. Aromatic emissions were increased by cold temperature, from 2 to 26 mg/km at 23 °C to 33–238 mg/km at −7 °C. OVOC emissions were not significantly affected by E10 fuel or cold temperature. The ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) of splash blended E10 fuels decreased by up to 76% and 81%, respectively, compared with those of E0 fuels. The results are useful to update VOC emission profiles of Chinese vehicles using ethanol blended gasoline and under low-temperature conditions.

Metal-rich biochar as an asphalt modifier to improve sustainability and reduce VOC emissions

Asphalt-surfaced areas have been recently reported as non-combustion sources emitting organic chemical compounds. These emissions from asphalt not only accelerate its aging but also negatively affect air quality and the health of people who inhale the emitted compounds. Trying to mitigate the latter emission and inspired by the phytoremediation capacity of the acacia plant, we have developed a metal-rich carbonaceous adsorbent (biochar) from the acacia plant. Here, we evaluate the efficacy of our acacia-derived adsorbent to reduce the hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from asphalt-surfaced areas. We further compare the efficacy of our acacia-derived adsorbent with an adsorbent made from a low-metal plant (silver grass). The higher metal content of the adsorbent made from acacia correlated with its higher efficacy compared to that of silver grass in reducing the release of VOCs from the corresponding asphalt, displaying emissions of 16.9% in asphalt binder containing acacia biochar compared to emissions of 21.2% using silver-grass biochar. Using density functional theory (DFT)-based molecular modeling, we specifically investigated the adsorption behavior of three prominent metals present in acacia biochar: Ca with ≈8 wt%, Al with 6.9 wt%, and Fe with 4.4 wt%. Using DFT, we demonstrated the individual contribution of each metal to adsorbing each of six chemical air pollutants. The DFT results revealed the superiority of Fe at interacting with VOCs across all N-containing zones of the biochar surface: pyridine, pyrrole, amine, and amide. Specifically, in the pyridine and pyrrole zones of the biochar surface, the trend of interaction energy for gas pollutants is as follows: Fe > Ca > Al > no metal. Considering the high concentration of Ca in acacia biochar (≈8 wt%), this trend of energy (Fe > Ca > Al > no metal) highlights the crucial role of Ca in enhancing biochar adsorption. Our findings highlight the potential of using inherently metal-rich biomass feedstocks to reduce volatile emissions from asphalt-surfaced areas, improving air quality and extending the service life of roadway infrastructure.

Mesoporous Si-WO3-supported Pt catalysts with high catalytic performance and excellent water resistance for toluene oxidation

Reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an integral part of improving the quality of the atmospheric environment. Catalytic oxidation has become an effective means of treating low and medium concentration VOCs exhausts due to its advantages in terms of removal efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection. Due to the unique inherent properties of supported precious metal catalysts, they show good catalytic efficiency in VOCs emission reduction. In this study, the mesoporous Si-WO3 support was first synthesized by the P123-assisted sol-gel method, and the xPt/Si-WO3 catalysts with the actual loadings (x = 0.19, 0.48, and 0.81 wt%) of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were then obtained, physicochemical properties of these materials were characterized using a variety of techniques, and their catalytic activities and water resistance for the oxidation of toluene were evaluated. The results showed that Pt NPs with an average particle size of 2.3−3.3 nm were highly dispersed on the mesoporous Si-WO3 support, and the 0.81Pt/Si-WO3 sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity for toluene oxidation at a space velocity of 20,000 mL/(g h) (T50% = 167 °C and T90% = 180 °C; specific reaction rate at 160 °C = 8.54 µmol/(gPt s), turnover frequency (TOFPt) at 160 °C = 1.67 × 10−3 s−1, and apparent activation energy = 45 kJ/mol). The good catalytic performance of 0.81Pt/Si-WO3 was associated with its large surface area, well dispersed Pt NPs, high adsorbed oxygen species concentration, large toluene adsorption capacity, and strong interaction between Pt NPs and mesoporous Si-WO3. The 0.81Pt/Si-WO3 sample possessed excellent water resistance, and the introduction of 5 vol% or 10 vol% water vapor to the reaction system enhanced toluene oxidation since part of water vapor participated in the oxidation of toluene. In addition, the toluene oxidation pathway might obey the sequence of (adsorbed toluene + adsorbed oxygen species) → benzyl alcohol → (benzoic acid and benzaldehyde) → maleic anhydride → (carbon dioxide and water).

Balancing the "magic triangle" performance of tire rubber nanocomposites with novel low VOC silane coupling agents

Nowadays, coupling agents are still the core technology of the “green tire” industry, which not only effectively weaken the silica network but also enhance the interface interaction between silica and rubber matrix. However, the reaction between the traditional silane coupling agents and the silanol groups on silica surface generates a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can affect the performance of the rubber composites and pollute the environment. In this paper, a series of novel coupling agents with low VOC emission were synthesized by reacting fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ethers of different polyether lengths (AEOX) with bis-[γ-(triethoxysilyl) propyl]-tetrasulfide TESPT (Si69). The structure of the novel coupling agent was characterized using FT-IR and 1H NMR. Meanwhile, it has been proven through FT-IR, XPS, TGA, and GCMS that the novel coupling agent can react with silica and reduce VOC emissions. Then the novel coupling agent was added into the silica/natural rubber (NR) nanocomposite. The test results of rubber composites showed that the addition of novel coupling agent can significantly enhance the dispersion of silica in the rubber matrix and effectively balance the "magic triangle" performance of tire. As a result, the rolling resistance of the silica/NR composites is reduced by 15.8 %, the wet skid resistance is improved by 14.2 %, and the abrasion resistance is improved by 20.3 %.

The importance of photochemical loss to source analysis and ozone formation potential: Implications from in-situ observations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Guangzhou, China

The chemical loss of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is influenced by atmospheric and is closely related to the photochemical formation of ozone (O3). Therefore, research on the atmospheric chemical transformation of VOCs is essential to understand their contribution to O3 formation. This study collected data on photochemical-related atmospheric components and meteorological factors in spring at a typical comprehensive observation platform in Guangzhou, China. The photochemical age method was used to evaluate the loss of VOCs due to atmospheric photochemical transformation and to analyze the contribution of such transformation to the source apportionment of VOCs and to the ozone formation potential (OFP). The results show that the mean photochemical loss of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) during the observation period was 4.1 ppbv, accounting for approximately 15% of the initial TVOC content. Alkenes had the highest consumed concentration/initial concentration (C/I ratio) of 37.3%. A comparison of the source apportionment results obtained using observational positive matrix factorization (Ob-PMF) and in situ positive matrix factorization (In-PMF) revealed that photochemical losses significantly affected VOCs emitted from industrial and biological sources. Furthermore, neglecting the photochemical loss of VOCs in PMF source apportionment could lead to an underestimation of the contribution of VOCs from industrial and biological sources. The calculated values of OFP under VOC loss (OFPC–VOCs) showed that OFPC-VOCs constituted approximately 30% of the OFP of the initial VOCs. 93.2% of the OFP was attributed to the photochemical loss of alkenes and aromatic hydrocarbons, indicating their significant influence on O3 formation. This study emphasizes the importance of fully considering the photochemical loss of VOCs for accurately assessing their sources and contributions to ozone pollution. It also provides theoretical support for formulating VOC emission reduction strategies in the Pearl River Delta region.

Ozone responses to reduced precursor emissions: A modeling analysis on how attainable goals can improve air quality in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area

High tropospheric ozone (O3) concentrations prevent the improvement of the air quality in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). Although the problem has improved considerably since the 1990s, a rebound in O3 levels in recent years has raised concerns about the deteriorating air quality. The nonlinear relationship between O3 formation and the emissions of its main precursors, i.e., volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), is a challenge when measures are enacted for effective mitigation of the O3 problem. This study evaluated the reduction in precursors, VOCs and NOx, using an up-to-date regional air quality model (HERMES-Mex-WRF-CMAQ). For evaluating realizable scenarios, the decline in VOC achieved in Japan after policy implementation was the targeted VOC reduction (40 % from area sources), and the NOx reduction observed in the MCMA during the COVID-19 pandemic was the targeted NOx reduction (40 % from mobile sources). The analysis evaluated the O3 responses to changes in a single precursor and a combination of both during a period of high O3 concentrations (April 2019). The results showed that 40 % reduction in VOC emissions would decrease the O3 8-h maximum concentrations by 16 %. However, 40 % reduction in NOx emissions would increase O3 by >15 %. The simultaneous reduction of both precursors did not significantly affect O3 levels. The diagnosis of ozone sensitivity using the H2O2/HNO3 ratios reinforced the simulation findings, indicating that VOC emissions limited ozone formation in most MCMA areas. As the simulated scenarios were based on factual case studies, our research offers insights into the realistic aims of MCMA policies to reduce O3 levels.

Emission reduction agents: A solution to inhibit the emission of harmful volatile organic compounds from crumb rubber modified bitumen

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in bitumen fumes pose health risks to workers. Adding end-of-life tire crumb rubber (CR) to bitumen increases VOC emissions. To promote cleaner asphalt production, recycled materials like cementitious materials, activated carbon, zeolite, and geopolymers were incorporated into crumb rubber modified bitumen and explored as emission reduction agents (ERAs). Proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to compare VOC emissions across blends. ERAs reduced emissions by at least 33%, with Portland cement, activated carbon, and geopolymer-based fly ash achieving up to 58%, 49%, and 48% reduction, respectively. Multivariable regression analyses showed that the BET surface area, BJH adsorption cumulative surface area, BJH desorption cumulative surface area, and average pore diameter of the ERAs were the predominant factors contributing to the reduction of VOC emissions.

Study on the emission characteristics of VOCs under the condition of biomass blending combustion

In order to understand the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the flue gas under the mixed combustion of biomass, the study on the emission characteristics of VOCs in the flue gas was carried out on a 58 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) unit. The results show that the co-firing of biomass can significantly reduce the emissions of VOCs and NOx and SO2. Changes in blended fuel particle size and combustion temperature reduce VOCs emissions. The most obvious change in the emission reduction of VOCs is reflected in the increase of the biomass mixing ratio from 20 % to 30 %. Biomass contains less S and N elements is the reason for the reduction of NOx and SO2 emissions. The emission of pollutants such as VOCs was the lowest when the biomass blending ratio was 40 %. Based on the actual operation of the power plant, 30 % is the optimal mixing ratio. The analysis showed that the amount of VOCs components had a strong positive correlation with the proportion of biomass in the fuel. The emission of VOCs under the condition of biomass blending has different characteristics from coal-fired boilers and biomass boilers. Under the two different mixing ratios, benzene series accounted for the largest proportion of VOCs emissions, reaching 44.38 % (20 %) and 33.75 % (40 %), respectively. The emission of benzene series is dominated by benzene and toluene, the emission of alkanes is dominated by n-hexane, and the emission of esters is dominated by ethyl acetate. The ozone formation potential (OFP) was analyzed by the maximum incremental reactivity method. The contribution of ozone generation potential at 20 % and 40 % mixing ratios was mainly from benzene series, which contributed 69.88 % and 70.24 %, respectively, and alkanes. contribution can also account for 25.76 % and 17.75 %.

Drivers and impacts of decreasing concentrations of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Beijing during 2016–2020

China has implemented various policies and measures for controlling air pollutants. However, our knowledge of the long-term trends in ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after the implementation of these action plans in China remains limited. To address this, we conducted a five-year analysis (2016–2020) of VOC compositions and concentrations in Beijing. The annual VOC concentration decreased from 44.0 ± 28.8 to 26.2 ± 16.4 ppbv, with alkanes being the most prevalent group. The annual average concentrations of alkenes, alkynes, and aromatics have experienced a significant decrease of over 50 %. Seasonal variations indicated higher VOC concentrations in winter and autumn, with more significant reductions observed in winter and autumn. The impact of meteorological conditions caused variations in VOC reductions during the Chinese Spring Festival. Satellite-based measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO) columns confirmed the reduction of VOC emissions during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown. The normalized annual average VOC concentration decreased by 2.9ppbv yr−1 from 2016 to 2020, and emission reduction contributed to 58.8 % of VOC reduction from 2016 to 2020 after meteorological normalization, indicating the effectiveness of implemented control measures. Based on receptor model, vehicle emissions and industrial sources were identified as the largest contributors to VOC concentrations. Vehicle emissions, liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas (LPG/NG) use, and coal combustion were major drivers of VOC reduction. Potential source region analysis revealed that air masses transported from northwestern and southern regions significantly contributed to VOC concentrations in Beijing. The range of source regions shrunk in both northwestern and southern regions with the reduction in VOC concentrations. The annual variations of ozone formation potential indicated a significant decrease in VOC reactivities through emission control. These results could provide insights into future emission control and coordinated efforts to improve PM2.5 and ozone levels in China.

Application of Composts' Biochar as Potential Sorbent to Reduce VOCs Emission during Kitchen Waste Storage.

It is expected that due to the new European Union regulation focus on waste management, managing kitchen waste will become more important in the future, especially in households. Therefore, it is crucial to develop user-friendly and odour-free containers to store kitchen waste. The study aimed to test the effectiveness of composts' biochar in reducing noxious odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during kitchen waste storage. Various amounts of compost biochar (0%, 1%, 5%, and 10%) were added to food waste samples and incubated for seven days at 20 °C. The released VOCs were analysed on days 1, 3, and 7 of the storage simulation process. The results indicated that adding 5-10% of composts' biochar to kitchen waste significantly reduced the emissions in 70% of the detected VOCs compounds. Furthermore, composts' biochar can be used to eliminate potential odour components and specific dangerous VOCs such as ethylbenzene, o-xylene, acetic acid, and naphthalene. A new composts' biochar with a unique composition was particularly effective in reducing VOCs and could be an excellent solution for eliminating odours in kitchen waste containers.

Development of ultra-high surface area polyaniline-based activated carbon for the removal of volatile organic compounds from industrial effluents

Removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from aqueous solutions is critical for reducing VOC emissions in the environment. Activated carbons are widely used for removal of VOCs from water. However, they show less application feasibility and low removal due to less surface area. Here, a cost-effective and high surface area activated carbonized polyaniline (ACP) was synthesized to sustainable removal of VOCs from water. The ACP microstructure, surface properties, and pore structure were investigated using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) theory, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The specific surface area of ACP6:1 (2988.13 m2/g) was greater than that of commercial activated carbon (PAC) (1094.49 m2/g), indicating that it has excellent VOC adsorption capacity. The effects of pH, initial VOC concentration, time, temperature, and ionic strength were studied. According to kinetic and thermodynamic studies on VOCs adsorption, it is an exothermic and spontaneous process involving rate-limiting kinetics. Adsorption isotherms follow the Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting that the adsorbent surface is heterogeneous with multilayer adsorption and maximum ACP adsorption capacities of 1913.9, 2453.3, 1635.8, and 3327.0 mg/g at 293 K for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and perchloroethylene, respectively, representing a 3- to 5-fold improvement over PAC. ACP is a promising adsorbent with a high adsorption efficiency for VOC removal.

VOCs Emission Level and Emission Reduction Potential of Coating Industry in Zibo

To evaluate the emission level and emission reduction potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the coating industry in Zibo, we conducted field research on eight typical enterprises in three representative coating industries:the automobile manufacturing coating industry, wooden furniture coating industry, and metal surface coating industry. The actual measurement method, material balance algorithm, and emission factor method were used to calculate the VOC emissions of enterprises, and the localized emission factors were established. The emission levels of enterprises were evaluated by comparing with other domestic and foreign studies including AP-42, and the emission reduction potential was calculated based on the material balance algorithm. The significance difference analysis method was used to study the influence degree of each link management and control. The results showed that the VOC emission factor in Zibo was 4.38 kg·car-1 for the automobile manufacturing coating industry, 212.52 g·kg-1 paint for the wooden furniture industry, and 42.79 g·kg-1 paint for the metal surface painting industry. The source emission reduction potential of furniture enterprise C and the process emission reduction potential of metal enterprises G and F could reach more than 50%. Study of synergistic effect of diatomite and modified attapulgite on reducing asphalt volatile organic compounds emission

The irritating flue gas generated during the heating process of asphalt is a serious emission pollution, causing both health risks and environmental hazards. In this work, a hybrid modified asphalt was prepared to reduce the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions by using diatomite as the primary adsorption material and modified attapulgite as the flame retardant. The physical and rheological property tests showed that the compound of diatomite and modified attapulgite can improve the elevated temperature capability of the binder while slightly reducing the fatigue resistance. The results of the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer test (GC–MS) indicated that the total amount of VOCs released by the compound modifier modified asphalt was reduced by 81.5% compared with that of virgin asphalt (VA), the type of aliphatic hydrocarbons (ALHs) and hydrocarbon derivatives (HYDs) was also reduced by 77% and 92%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), simultaneous thermal (TG), and brunaurer emmett teller (BET) analysis showed that the mechanism of VOCs concentration reduction by the compound modifier might be chelation of dilution (water)-adsorption (hole)-blocking (insulating layer). This study provides a clean asphalt production method to reduce VOCs emission.

Climate co-benefits of VOC control policies in China based on a cross-scale approach

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) contributing to smog formation, have been an important indicator of atmospheric governance during China's “14th Five-Year Plan”. VOC would be possibly incorporated into the scope of environmental protection tax, but previous studies have seldom explored impacts of VOC control policies at national and regional levels. Here, we design a national uniform VOC control policy, as well as two regionally differentiated policies based on regional disparities in PM2.5 concentrations and energy intensity by using a cross-scale dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. Our analysis is to assess the impacts of these policies on VOC, CO2, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and PM2.5 emissions, air quality and environmental equity, and to estimate health benefits, policy costs and net benefits. We find that national and regionally differentiated VOC control policies generally lead to VOC emission reductions and generate co-benefits on emission reductions in CO2, SO2, NOX and PM2.5 at national and provincial levels. However, regional emission leakage exists due to differences in the provincial costs of VOC mitigation. The regionally differentiated VOC pricing policies are found to be more effective to enhance environmental equity than the uniform policy. In particular, the regionally differentiated VOC control policy based on provincial energy efficiency is found to be superior to other policies in terms of improve air quality. Furthermore, the human health benefits associated with VOC pricing policies would partially offset policy costs at both the national and regional levels. Our results suggest that policymakers would pay attention to developing regions with low energy efficiency which have the great emission reduction potential. Advanced producing technology and further end-of-pipe control measures to reduce non-combustion PM2.5 emissions are needed. VOC policy designed based on provincial energy efficiency provides great insights for environmental policy making to accomplish 2035 goal of building a Beautiful China.

Variation and trend of nitrate radical reactivity towards volatile organic compounds in Beijing, China

Abstract. Nitrate radical (NO3) is an important nocturnal atmospheric oxidant in the troposphere that significantly affects the lifetime of pollutants emitted by anthropogenic and biogenic activities, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Here, we used 1 year of VOC observation data obtained in urban Beijing in 2019 to look into the level, composition, and seasonal variation in NO3 reactivity (kNO3). We show that hourly kNO3 towards measured VOC varied widely from < 10−4 to 0.083 s−1 with a campaign-average value (± standard deviation) of 0.0032 ± 0.0042 s−1. There was large seasonal difference in NO3 reactivity towards VOC with averaged values (± standard deviation) of 0.0024±0.0026 s−1 (spring), 0.0067±0.0066 s−1 (summer), 0.0042±0.0037 s−1 (autumn), and 0.0027±0.0028 s−1 (winter). Alkenes such as isoprene and styrene accounted for the majority. Isoprene was the dominant species in spring, summer, and autumn, accounting for 40.0 %, 77.2 %, and 43.2 %, respectively. Styrene only played a leading role in winter, with a percentage of 39.8 %. A sensitivity study shows monoterpenes, the species we did not measure, may account for a large fraction of kNO3. Based on the correlation between the calculated kNO3 and VOC concentrations in 2019, we established localized parameterization schemes for predicting the reactivity by only using a part of VOC species. The historically published VOC data were collected using the parameterization method to reconstruct the long-term kNO3 in Beijing. The lower kNO3 during 2014–2021 compared with that during 2005–2013 may be attributed to anthropogenic VOC emission reduction. Finally, we revealed that NO3 dominated the nocturnal VOC oxidation, with 83 % of the annual average in Beijing in 2019, which varied seasonally and was strongly regulated by the level of kNO3, nitrogen oxide, and ozone. Our results improve the understanding of nocturnal atmospheric oxidation in urban regions and contribute to our knowledge of nocturnal VOC oxidation and secondary organic pollution.

A Mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Laser Ultra-Sensitive Trace Formaldehyde Detection System Based on Improved Dual-Incidence Multipass Gas Cell

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a tracer of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and its concentration has gradually decreased with the reduction in VOC emissions in recent years, which puts forward higher requirements for the detection of trace HCHO. Therefore, a quantum cascade laser (QCL) with a central excitation wavelength of 5.68 μm was applied to detect the trace HCHO under an effective absorption optical pathlength of 67 m. An improved, dual-incidence multi-pass cell, with a simple structure and easy adjustment, was designed to further improve the absorption optical pathlength of the gas. The instrument detection sensitivity of 28 pptv (1σ) was achieved within a 40 s response time. The experimental results show that the developed HCHO detection system is almost unaffected by the cross interference of common atmospheric gases and the change of ambient humidity. Additionally, the instrument was successfully deployed in a field campaign, and it delivered results that correlated well with those of a commercial instrument based on continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (R2 = 0.967), which indicates that the instrument has a good ability to monitor ambient trace HCHO in unattended continuous operation for long periods of time.

Increasing volatile organic compounds emission from massive industrial coating consumption require more comprehensive prevention

Coating is an important raw material in industrial production. Global consumption of industrial coatings has approximated 28.84 Tg in 2019, with China accounting for more than half which generated plenty of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). To learn the pollution characteristic and prevention strategy, we estimated the speciated VOCs emission of coating-consuming industries in China through field investigation, sample collection and analytical analysis. The environmental and health influences in 2019, 2025 and 2030 were then assessed based on scenario prediction with taking low-VOCs containing coating (LCC) application into consideration which was an important action in the ongoing prevention measures. Ozone formation potential (OFP), secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) and the newly established index of total health risks (THR) were employed to indicate the environmental influence and health threaten. Conclusions showed that (1) VOCs emissions would increase from 6.78 Tg to 10.46 Tg during 2019–2030 which result in a much higher OFP, SOAP and THR. (2) Replacing traditional organic coating (TOC) with LCC could effectively reduce VOCs emission. For every 1% increase in LCC proportion, VOCs emission, OFPs, SOAPs, and THRs decreased by 1.24%, 1.44%, 1.49%, and 1.70% on average, respectively. (3) Potential O3 and SOA yields approximated 25.61 Tg and 19.12 Tg (5.87% and 4.39% higher than 2019) even in the most stringent scenario for 2030 which meant continuous increases in industrial coating consumption could offset the positive effects produced by LCC substitution. (4) Esters, ethers, alcohols, and ketones are proposed as main composition of coatings to effectively reduce VOCs emission and their influence on account of better technical accessibility. These findings reveal that more innovative pollution prevention methods and production technologies are urgently needed to compensate for increased pollutant emissions derived from the growing demand for coating-associated commodities.
