Reference intervals of complete blood count and coagulation tests in Vietnamese pregnant women

BackgroundPregnancy has major effects that make hematology parameters outside of normal reference ranges. Therefore, we conducted this study to establish reference intervals for Vietnamese pregnant women.MethodsFrom June 2023 to Augst 2023, blood samples from 879 eligible pregnant women were run on DxH 900 hematology analyzer and ACL TOP 550 coagulation analyzer. The tested parameters are prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FIB), white blood cell (WBC) and its differentials (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), RBC distribution width (RDW), RBC distribution width standard deviation (RDW-SD), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV). A non-parametric method was used to establish the 2.5th and 97.5th percentile reference intervals.ResultsPT, APTT decrease but fibrinogen increases during pregnancy. Physiological adaptations of pregnancy result in a decrease in RBC count, but an increase in WBC count and no changes in platelet count. The reference intervals for PT (seconds), APTT (seconds), fibrinogen (mg/dL), in the first trimester were 10.30–12.88, 25.40–35.46, 280.28–559.00, in the second trimester were 9.80–11.66, 24.05–33.23, 347.75–593.35, in the third trimester were 9.60–11.40, 23.40–31.80, 330.28–628.56, respectively. The reference intervals for main hematology parameters which are WBC (× 109/L), RBC (× 1012/L), HGB (g/dL), HCT (%), PLT (× 109/L) in the first trimester were 6.33–15.24, 3.73–5.32, 10.33–13.95, 32.22–42.29, 169.66–413.88, in the second trimester were 6.99–15.55, 3.33–4.98, 9.71–13.17, 30.26–40.07, 172.34–372.19, in the third trimester were 6.22–14.14, 3.54–4.98, 9.80–13.97, 31.11–42.70, 151.30–417.14, respectively.ConclusionsMost established referenced intervals from each trimester differ from other trimesters. These trimester-specific reference ranges for Vietnamese pregnant women will aid clinicians in entepreting parameters and help other laboratories adopt these ranges after validating.Trial registrationThis study is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT05929326.

Haematological alterations under the anti-helminthic application in Pavo cristatus

ABSTRACT Anti-helminthic drugs (Albendazole and Levamisole) trials were conducted on Indian Peafowls (n = 20) kept at Jallo Wildlife Park, Lahore, Pakistan for 15. Sampling was conducted on days 7 and 15 of treatments. The results showed that the WBC count was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in both samples in response to Levamisole treatment. Haemoglobin (HGB) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) concentration increased significantly (P < 0.05) in response to both treatments; however, Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in Albendazole-treated birds on both the sampling days compared to the control. Red Blood Cell Distribution Width-Standard Deviation (RDW-SD) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in all treatment groups. On the other hand, the prevalence of eggs per gram (EPG) was reduced by 20% after the application of Levamisole on days 7 and 15. It was concluded that both drugs had significant effects on WBCs, HGB, MCH, MCHC and RDW-SD.

Incorporating inflammatory biomarkers into a prognostic risk score in patients with non-ischemic heart failure: a machine learning approach.

Inflammation is involved in the mechanisms of non-ischemic heart failure (NIHF). We aimed to investigate the prognostic value of 21 inflammatory biomarkers and construct a biomarker risk score to improve risk prediction for patients with NIHF. Patients diagnosed with NIHF without infection during hospitalization were included. The primary outcome was defined as all-cause mortality and heart transplantations. We used elastic net Cox regression with cross-validation to select inflammatory biomarkers and construct the best biomarker risk score model. Discrimination, calibration, and reclassification were evaluated to assess the predictive value of the biomarker risk score. Of 1,250 patients included (median age, 53 years, 31.9% women), 436 patients (34.9%) experienced the primary outcome during a median of 2.8 years of follow-up. The final biomarker risk score included high-sensitivity C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) and red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD), both of which were 100% selected in 1,000 times cross-validation folds. Incorporating the biomarker risk score into the best basic model improved the discrimination (ΔC-index = 0.012, 95% CI 0.003-0.018) and reclassification (IDI, 2.3%, 95% CI 0.7%-4.9%; NRI, 17.3% 95% CI 6.4%-32.3%) in risk identification. In the cross-validation sets, the mean time-dependent AUC ranged from 0.670 to 0.724 for the biomarker risk score and 0.705 to 0.804 for the basic model with a biomarker risk score, from 1 to 8 years. In multivariable Cox regression, the biomarker risk score was independently associated with the outcome in patients with NIHF (HR 1.76, 95% CI 1.49-2.08, p < 0.001, per 1 score increase). An inflammatory biomarker-derived risk score significantly improved prognosis prediction and risk stratification, providing potential individualized therapeutic targets for NIHF patients.

Evaluate the Complete Blood Picture and Some Biochemical Parameters in Patients referred to the dialysis unit in Diyala General Hospital

Research done on 40 patients; 24 males, 20-79 years, and 16 females, 42-67 years; referred to dialysis unit, Baqubah hospital, in November and December, 2021; January and February 2022. Creatinine, Urea and Iron, record high levels. Glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, and phosphate, were within normal, and low levels of albumin. Means of Total Erythrocyte Counts (TECs), hemoglobin (Hb), Hematocrit% (HCT), and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), showed lowered level. While, Mean Cell Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Red Blood Cell Distribution Width- Standard Deviation (RDW-SD), Mean Red Blood Cell Distribution Width- Coefficient of Variation (RDW-CV), were within normal. Total Leucocyte Counts (TLCs), Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophil, Basophils, were within normal, Platelet Counts and related parameter were within normal. Within ranges some values were higher than normal as, potassium, phosphate, (RDW-SD), (RDW-CV), Neutrophils%, Eosinophil%, Lymphocytes, Mean Platelets Volume (MPV). While some other values were lower as sodium, (TRCs), (Hb), (HCT %), (MCV), (MCH), (MCHC), (RDW-SD), (TLCs), Lymphocytes%, platelets, Platelet Distribution Width (PDW), Platelet- Large Cell Ratio (P-LCR). But some values of glucose, and calcium, were high, and some other low. At the same time Monocytes%, Basophils% was within normal range. In conclusion creatinine and urea levels have an important role in diagnosis and follow- up of kidney failure. All patients have high levels of urea, iron and creatinine. But not all have higher level of potassium and glucose. Sodium and albumin, showed decreased level. Blood picture revealed microcytic, hypochromic anemia; as (TECs), (Hb), (HCT %), (MCHC) and (RDW-SD) were of lower values.

Correlation Analysis between c.1365-13T>C and c.406C>T Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and the Risk of G6PD Deficiency

To investigate the possible association between c.1365-13T>C, c.406C>T polymorphism and G6PD deficiency in the population of Guangxi by the methods of case-control study. Meanwhile to investigate the mutation frequency of these two gene loci in population of Guangxi. The activity levels of G6PD and c.1365-13T>C, c.406C>T polymorphism were detected in 417 patients with G6PD deficiency and 295 healthy controls. The correlation between genotypes, alleles and G6PD activity levels was analyzed using statistical methods, and the haplotype frequencies at the two loci was analyzed using online SHEsis software. The frequencies of CC genotype (P=0.001, OR=2.684) and C allele (P=0.002, OR=1.681) of c.1365-13T>C in patients with G6PD deficiency were significant lower than those in the controls, the frequency of dominant model TT+TC vs CC（P=0.001, OR=2.694） in the G6PD deficiency group was higher than that in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant. The differences of genotype and allele frequencies in c.406C>T between G6PD deficiency patients and controls had no statistical significance (all P>0.05). Haplotype analysis showed that there were significant correlations between C-C, T-C haplotypes and G6PD expression levels. In G6PD deficiency group, patients with c.1365-13T>C TC genotype had higher levels of G6PD activity, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) compared with patients with TT genogype, but the values of red cell distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) was lower than those in TT genotype patients, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). While patients with c.1365-13T>C CC genotype had lower levels of G6PD activity compared with patients with TT genogype, but the values of MCV and MCH were higher than those in TT genotype patients (P<0.05). The average values of hematocrit(HCT), MCV, MCH and red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) in patients with c. 406C> T TT genotype were significantly higher than those in patients with c. 406C> T CC genotype.(all P<0.05). The association between G6PD c.1365-13T>C and the activity levels of G6PD is statistically significant, which is worth further study.

Baseline red blood cell distribution width and perforin, dynamic levels of interleukin 6 and lactate are predictors of mortality in patients with sepsis.

Sepsis is a critical illness often encountered in the intensive care unit. However, prognostic biomarkers for sepsis have limited sensitivity. This study aimed to identify more sensitive predictors of mortality through repeated monitoring of laboratory parameters. Patients with sepsis (Sepsis 3.0 criteria met) were recruited and divided into the survivor and nonsurvivor groups after 28 days. Data on blood biochemistry, lymphocyte subsets, and cytokines were obtained on the first and seventh hospitalization days. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to explore the correlation between these variables and patient mortality. Forty patients with sepsis were included. The mortality rate was 37.5%. Red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDWSD) (hazard ratio [HR]=1.107 [95% CI: 1.005-1.219], p=0.040) and perforin level (HR=1.001 [95% CI: 1-1.003], p=0.035) on the first day, as well as lactate (HR=112.064 [95% CI: 2.192-5729.629], p=0.019) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) (HR=1.005 [95% CI: 1.001-1.008], p=0.014) levels on the seventh day, were independent risk factors of mortality. If the patients were divided into two groups based on RDWSD (normal: n=31; increased: n=9), the Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the group with increased RDWSD had a lower survival (p=0.025). Baseline RDWSD and perforin, along with dynamic IL-6 and lactate levels, were independent predictors of mortality in patients with sepsis.

Association of Hemoglobin to Red Blood Cell Distribution Width-Standard Deviation (RDW-SD) Ratio and 3-Month Readmission in Elderly Chinese Patients with Heart Failure: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) have clinical significance in the prognosis of heart failure (HF). Little is known regarding the prognostic value of the Hb/RDW-SD ratio in patients with HF. This study sought to investigate the association between Hb/RDW-SD ratio and HF 3-month readmission in Chinese elderly patients. The present study was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 1816 HF patients were extracted from the Chinese HF database. A generalized linear model was used to explore the association between Hb/RDW-SD and 3-month readmission in HF. The generalized additive model was used to explore the nonlinear relationship, and a two-piecewise linear regression model was used to find the inflection point. Subgroup analysis explored interactions and whether each subgroup was consistent with the primary outcome direction. Result showed Hb/RDW-SD was negatively associated with HF 3-month readmission (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.89, P = 0.0031). A non-linear relationship was detected between Hb/RDW-SD and HF 3-month readmission with two inflection points (1.78 and 2.17). Both Hb/RDW-SD < 1.78 and Hb/RDW-SD > 2.17 showed a significant correlation between them, with corresponding effect values of (OR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.17 to 0.87, P = 0.0209) and (OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.27 to 0.71, P = 0.0007), respectively. Hb/RDW-SD is negatively associated with HF 3-month readmission. The relationship between Hb/RDW-SD and HF 3-month readmission is also non-linear. Both Hb/RDW-SD < 1.78 and Hb/RDW-SD > 2.17 were strong negatively associated with HF 3-month readmission.

Clinical significance of mean corpuscular volume as a prognostic indicator of radiotherapy for locally advanced lung cancer: a retrospective cohort study.

Although the prognosis of solid tumors is related to the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), which can roughly predict the prognosis of patients, its correlation with locally advanced lung cancer is still unclear. We evaluated the relationship between serum MCV levels and prognosis in patients before radiotherapy. We retrospectively collected the age, sex, smoking history, TNM stage, ECOG score, hematocrit (HCT), MCV, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) of patients with locally advanced lung cancer who received chest radiotherapy from 2013 to 2017, and analyzed the relationship between this information and the overall survival (OS). Among all patients, 89 were male (79.5%), 23 were female (20.5%), 46 (41.1%) were older than 65 years, and 66 (58.9%) were younger than 65 years. Seventy-four patients had MCV <93.65 fL, 38 patients had MCV ≥93.65 fL, and the median follow-up period was 24 months. The patients with high T stage, high N stage, and high MCV had lower OS (P<0.05). In the Cox regression analysis, MCV [odds ratio (OR) =0.534, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.349-0.818, P=0.01], T stage (OR =0.654, 95% CI: 0.440-0.972, P=0.04) and N stage (OR =0.545, 95% CI: 0.371-0.801, P=0.01) were predictors of prognosis. In the clinical treatment of patients with locally advanced lung cancer, MCV can be used to roughly predict their survival time.

Is red blood cell distribution width a prognostic factor for colorectal cancer? A meta-analysis.

BackgroundRDW might be an easy and cost-effective pre-operative prognostic factor for cancer patients. The aim of the current study was to analyze whether red blood cell distribution width (RDW) was a prognostic factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent radical surgery.MethodsWe conducted the searching strategy in three databases including the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library from the inception to May 07, 2022, to find eligible studies. In this meta-analysis, we focused on the prognosis. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS).ResultsA total of seven studies involving 7,541 patients were included in this meta-analysis. After pooling up the HRs, red blood cell distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) was not an independent prognostic factor of OS (HR = 1.48, I2 = 90%, 95% CI = 0.93 to 2.36, P = 0.10), however, red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) was an independent prognostic factor of OS (HR = 1.99, I2 = 0%, 95% CI = 1.59 to 2.49, P < 0.01). As for DFS, we found that RDW-CV (HR = 1.51, I2 = 83%, 95% CI = 0.94 to 2.43, P = 0.09 < 0.10) and RDW-SD (HR = 1.77, I2 = 56%, 95% CI = 0.91 to 3.43, P = 0.09 < 0.10) were both the independent prognostic factors. In terms of CSS, we found that RDW-CV was not an independent prognostic factor (HR = 1.23, I2 = 95%, 95% CI = 0.72 to 2.10, P = 0.46).ConclusionRDW-SD was an independent prognostic factor of OS and DFS, and RDW-CV was an independent prognostic factor of DFS.

Evaluation of the Diagnostic Value of Hematologic Parameters and Ratios in SARS-CoV-2 VOC-202012/01 Mutant Population.

IntroductionIn this study, we set out to study possible differences between individuals with and without VOC 202012/01 variant by using less costly complete blood count analytes and quickly analyzing the samples and ratios derived from these analytes. For this purpose, we assessed neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, and Red Blood Cell Distribution Width-Standard Deviation (RDW-SD) levels among complete blood count parameters (CBC) (identification and count of red blood cell, neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, platelet) as well as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR).MethodsA retrospective cross-sectional study was performed over the course of two months (from May to June 2021) on 212 patients who presented to the emergency department of a tertiary hospital with Covid-19 symptoms and took SARS-CoV2 PCR and CBC tests. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed SARS-CoV2 positive patients and their hospitalization data were gathered from the public health management system. Their VOC-202012/01 mutation status was also confirmed by this system.ResultsRDW-SD, RDW, NLR, and PLR indexes, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) values, were higher in the patients with VOC-202012/01 mutation (p<0.0001) than those without mutation, while hemoglobin and hematocrit counts and ratio, as well as eosinophil and lymphocyte counts, remained lower in the patients with mutation (p<0.0001).ConclusionNLR and RLP ratios derived from hematological parameters and models based on these ratios and RDW-SD are cheaper and more widely used. Our study suggests that the hematological analytes, the ratios obtained from these analytes, and the models created through these ratios in patients presenting to the ED with COVID-19-like symptoms and having positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results were significantly different in those with and without the VOC-202012/01 mutation. The bottom line is that they can serve as reliable predictors in the assessment of patients with the VOC-202012/01 mutation.

Assessing the Prognostic Value of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Stage I Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer with Complete Resection

Purpose To explore the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in stage I non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing surgery. Patients and Methods. Between 2014 and 2016, a total of 190 patients with postoperative pathology of stage I NSCLC who underwent radical surgery at Nanjing Chest Hospital were studied. Clinical data were analyzed and classified into low-risk, moderate-risk, and high-risk groups based on independent risk factors to assess the prognosis. Results NLR was associated with histological type and gender, and patients with an elevated NLR have poor overall survival (OS). Lymphovascular invasion, red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival (PFS) in postoperative patients with stage I NSCLC, while NLR, RDW-SD, and CEA were independent risk factors for OS. Both PFS and OS were shorter in the low-risk group than in the medium-risk and high-risk groups. Conclusions NLR, RDW-SD, CEA, and lymphovascular invasion are independent risk factors for postoperative prognosis in patients with stage I NSCLC, and the combination has a predictive value.

A Nomogram for Predicting the Risk of Pulmonary Hypertension for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BackgroundPulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Timely diagnosis of PH in COPD patients is vital to achieve proper treatment; however, there is no algorithm to identify those at high risk. We aimed to develop a predictive model for PH in patients with COPD that provides individualized risk estimates.MethodsA total of 527 patients with COPD who were admitted to our hospital between May 2019 and December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Using echocardiographic results as a standard, patients were stratified into a moderate- or high-PH probability group and a low-PH probability group. They were randomly grouped into either the training set (n = 368 patients) or validation set (n = 159 patients) in a ratio of 7:3. We utilized the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model to select the feature variables. The characteristic variables selected in the LASSO regression were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to construct the predictive model. The predictive model was displayed using a nomogram. We used the receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, and clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate model performance, and internal validation was assessed.ResultsThe predictive factors included in the prediction model were Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage, emphysema, PaCO2, NT-pro-BNP, red blood cell (RBC) distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD), and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The predictive model yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.770 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.719–0.820); in the internal validation, the AUC was 0.741 (95% CI, 0.659–0.823). The predictive model was well calibrated, and the DCA showed that the proposed nomogram had strong clinical applicability.ConclusionThis study showed that a simple nomogram could be used to calculate the risk of PH in patients with COPD which can be useful for the individualized clinical management of COPD patients who may be occur with PH. Further studies need to be confirmed by larger sample sizes and validated in the stable COPD population.

Predictive value of NLR and PLR in missed miscarriage.

BackgroundThe aim of the study was to investigate the predictive value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in missed miscarriage.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, a total of 400 women (involving 200 with missed early miscarriage and 200 with normal pregnancy but terminate by artificial abortion) were included. General clinical data and complete blood count (CBC) such as white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), platelet (PLT), red blood cell distribution width‐standard deviation (RDW‐SD), platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil count, and lymphocyte count were collected, and the NLR and PLR were calculated for both groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to calculate the predictive value.ResultsThere was no significant difference in the WBC, RBC, PLT, RDW‐SD, PDW, neutrophil, lymphocyte, NLR, and PLR between the two groups (p > 0.05).But MPV was lower in the missed early miscarriage group than in the control group (p < 0.05), and the area under the working curve (AUC) of ROC was 0.58, specificity and sensitivity was 69% and 47%, respectively.ConclusionNLR and PLR were not the suitable indictor for missed miscarriage, but MPV should be a concern in the first trimester.

Multivariable analysis of clinical and laboratory data manifestations predicting severity and mortality risk in patients with Coronavirus disease 2019 in the mountainous west of Iran: a retrospective single-center study.

Few reports have addressed the clinical and laboratory features of patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in mountainous areas, especially in Iran. To report the clinical and laboratory data and manifestations predicting mortality of patients with COVID-19 in the west of Iran. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 286 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between 25 February 2020 and 12 May 2020 to describe their clinical symptoms and laboratory test findings when they were admitted at the Hajar Hospital affiliated with the Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, and a multivariable analysis of factors that predict their disease severity and mortality. After hospital admission, 18 patients died and 268 were discharged. Older age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-1.04, P = 0.001], presence of underlying diseases (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.01-3.45, P = 0.04), elevated hematocrit (OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.03-1.13, P = 0.002), and increase in red blood cell distribution width (RDW) coefficient of variation (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02-1.36, P = 0.02) were significantly associated with disease severity. Older age (OR = 1.00, 95% CI = 1.00-1.07, P = 0.03), hypocalcemia (OR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.09-0.58, P = 0.002), hypophosphatemia (OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.26-1.02, P = 0.04), and increase in platelet-larger cell ratio (P-LCR; OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.00-1.15, P = 0.04) were significantly associated with mortality. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were as follows: calcium 0.759; lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) 0.731; phosphorus 0.725; bilirubin 0.689; C-reactive protein 0.679; and RDW - standard deviation (RDW-SD) 0.624. Those who did not survive tended to be elderly and had a greater incidence of comorbidities. Elevated LDH, decreased levels of calcium and phosphorus, and anemia at diagnosis were associated with greater risk of death for these Iranian patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Regular assessment of these markers would help to manage patients with COVID-19.

Effect Exposure of Mobile Phone Radiation on Blood Parameters in Rats

The aim of the research was to assess effects of short and long-period exposure to radiation from mobile phone on blood indices in experimental rats. In this study forty mature female rats were used; the animals were divided into two experimental group, each group consists of twenty animals. Short-period group of rats were exposed to cell phone radiation for different duration 30 m, 60 m, and 90 m per day for six weeks. Long-period group of rats were exposed to radiation from mobile phone for different duration 2h, 4h, and 6h per day for three months. The study noticed that there was significant (P≥0.05) elevation in total white blood cells and the study demonstrated significant increment (P≥0.05) in percentage of lymphocytes (71.1%) of rats which exposed to radiation from mobile phone for short-period in (90 minutes) compared to the control group (42.64%). While, the study revealed that there was a significantly (P≥0.05) lower percentage of neutrophils (15.36%) in rats that were exposed to mobile phone radiation for long-period in (6 hours) compared with the control group (52.12%).The study recorded that there was a significant (P≥0.05) elevation in total red blood corpuscles and packed cell volume of rats exposed to radiation from mobile phone for short and long-period in different times compared with control. On the other hand, the research indicated that there was a significant (p≤0.05) decrement in mean corpuscles volume (MCV), mean corpuscle hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscle hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell distribution width standard deviation (RDW-SD) of rats to radiation from mobile phone for short and long-period in different times than control group.

Red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation but not red blood cell distribution width-coefficient of variation as a potential index for the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia in mid-pregnancy women.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic values of red blood cell distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) and red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) in mid-pregnancy women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). To obtain the results, 115 mid-pregnancy women with IDA, defined as the IDA group, and 142 healthy mid-pregnancy women, selected as the control group, were enrolled in this study. Hematological parameters and ferritin concentrations in the serum were analyzed. The efficiency of RDW-CV and RDW-SD to distinguish IDA from mid-pregnancy women was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The RDW-SD value in the IDA group was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05), while the RDW-CV value did not differ between them (p = 0.84). Significantly negative correlations were found between RDW-CV (r = −0.297, p = 0.001), RDW-SD (r = −0.404, p = 0.000), and serum ferritin in the IDA group but not in the control group. For the diagnosis of IDA, RDW-CV and RDW-SD produced areas under the ROC curves of 0.58 and 0.84. To conclude, our results suggest that RDW-SD, but not RDW-CV, can be used as a diagnostic index of IDA for mid-pregnancy women.

Red Blood Cell Distribution Width as a Predictive Marker for Coronary Artery Lesions in Patients with Kawasaki Disease

This study aimed to investigate the association between red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and the risk of coronary artery lesions (CALs) in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD). A total of 1355 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for KD were reviewed between January 2018 and December 2019, including 636 patients with CALs and 719 patients without CALs. Blood samples for RDW were obtained at admission (before intravenous immunoglobulin treatment). A logistic regression analysis was performed, and a receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to determine the prognostic value of RDW standard deviation (RDW-SD) and RDW coefficient of variation (RDW-CV). The study was registered at www.chictr.org.cn, No.: ChiCTR 2000040980. The results showed that RDW-SD increased in patients with complete KD and CALs compared with patients with complete KD without CALs (39 fL vs. 38 fL, respectively; p = 0.000). RDW-CV in patients with complete KD and CALs was significantly higher compared with patients with completed KD without CALs (p = 0.000). Further multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that RDW-SD was an independent marker of CALs in patients with complete KD (p = 0.001), but no association was found between RDW-CV and CALs. The area under the curve of RDW-SD for predicting CALs in patients with complete KD was 0.606 (95% confidence interval 0.572–0.640; p = 0.000) with a sensitivity and specificity of 61% and 55%, respectively, when the optimal cut-off value of RDW-SD was 38.5 fL. RDW-CV increased in patients with incomplete KD and CALs compared with patients without CALs (13.55% vs 13.3%, respectively; p = 0.004), and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that RDW-CV was an independent marker of CALs in patients with incomplete KD (p = 0.021). The area under the curve of RDW-CV for predicting CALs in patients with incomplete KD was 0.597 (95% confidence interval 0.532–0.661; p = 0.004) with a sensitivity and specificity of 40% and 77%, respectively, when the optimal cut-off value of RDW-SD was 13.85%. Conclusion: RDW can be used as an independent predictive marker of CALs in patients with KD, but the type of KD should be considered. RDW-SD was an independent marker of CALs in patients with complete KD, while RDW-CV was a predictor of incomplete KD.

Red blood cell distribution width is associated with adverse cardiovascular events after septal myectomy.

BackgroundRed blood cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in several cardiovascular diseases. However, the prognostic significance of RDW in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) who underwent septal myectomy remains unclear as no studies have been conducted on this topic. This study aimed to assess the prognostic significance of RDW in these patients.MethodsA total of 867 adults with HOCM who underwent septal myectomy at Fuwai Hospital from 2011 to 2017 were retrospectively studied. All patients were assessed comprehensively, including their medical history, echocardiograms, and blood test results.ResultsThe median age of patients was 47.9 [interquartile range (IQR), 37.0–56.0] years and 61.5% of patients were men. During a median follow-up period of 32 (IQR, 17–53) months, 26 patients died and 23 had a cardiovascular death during follow-up. Compared to patients in the lowest RDW quartile, those in the highest quartile had a significantly lower 5-year survival free from all-cause and cardiovascular death (95.9% vs. 87.6%, P<0.001; 95.9% vs. 89.9%, P<0.001). Compared with lower RDW, higher RDW was significantly associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and relevant clinical risk factors [per RDW standard deviation (SD) hazard ratio (HR) increase =1.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.54–2.05, P<0.001; per RDW SD HR =1.91, 95% CI: 1.63–2.22, P for trend <0.001].ConclusionsHigher RDW is independently associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with HOCM after septal myectomy. Therefore, this readily available biomarker could be considered as an additive biomarker for risk stratification in these patients.

Relationships among body condition score, FAMACHA© score and haematological parameters in Pelibuey ewes.

The objective of the present study was to determine the associations between the FAMACHA© score, body condition score (BCS) and several haematological parameters of Pelibuey ewes. In total, 52 clinically healthy Pelibuey ewes were evaluated in this study. A blood sample was collected from each animal to determine haematological variables. The BCS was evaluated on a scale of 1 to 5 and subsequently grouped into four categories: (1) < 1.5, (2) 2.0-2.5, (3) 3.0-3.5 and (4) > 4.0. The coloration of conjunctival mucosa was evaluated using the FAMACHA© system. The analysed haematological parameters were red blood cell (RBC) count, haemoglobin (HGB), haematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red blood cell distribution width standard deviation (RDW-SD) and red blood cell distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW-CV). A descriptive statistical analysis was performed, and the Pearson correlation coefficients between variables were estimated. Haematological parameters were analysed with one-way analyses of variance, and the Tukey test was applied when significant differences were detected. The FAMACHA© score was only associated with MCHC (r = - 0.30, P < 0.05). The haematological parameters of RBC count, HCT, RDW-SD and RDW-CV statistically differed among BCS groups. The BCS was associated with RBC count, HCT, RDW-SD and RDW-CV, with r values ranging from 0.35 to 0.48. The haematological values were similar to those reported in ewes from Iran and Iraq. Hence, the optimization of the BCS calculation of Pelibuey ewes can generate association tables with haematological parameters to aid in the sanitary and feeding management of sheep.

The standard deviation of the red blood cells distribution width by volume as an assumed biomarker of chronic alcohol intoxication

Introduction. At present, Russia occupies one of the leading places in the world in ethanol consumption per capita. The actual and unsolved problem remains the diagnosis and prevention of chronic alcoholism. The definition of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin proposed by many authors has many drawbacks, in particular, a rather high cost, as well as a limited sensitivity of the index after two weeks from an episode of ethanol consumption. For this reason, it seems necessary to search for alternative biomarkers of chronic alcoholism. One of the applicants for the role of a marker of chronic alcohol intoxication is the Red blood cell Distribution Width - standard deviation (RDW-SD). The article contains the results of a study of changes in the standard deviation of the RDW-SD in the venous blood of patients with acute ethanol poisoning in cases with chronic alcohol intoxication.The aim of this work was to quantify the change in RDW-SD in patients with alcohol dependence (chronic alcohol intoxication) during periods of exacerbation (acute alcohol poisoning of moderate severity). Material and methods. The research materials were clinical blood tests of 245 patients on the first day after admission to the Department of Toxicology of the I.I. Dzanelidze. Research Institute of Emergency Medicine.Results. From the literature, it is known that the RDW-SD is largely associated with folic acid deficiency. Vitamin B9 deficiency can significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease due to the development of hyperhomocysteinemia in patients. Particular attention is required for patients aged 46-65 years, who have the highest level of RDW-SD with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular events. At the same time, the highest mortality rate in this age group from the reasons associated with the use of ethanol is noted, which gives reason to consider RDW-SD as one of the possible indices of the mortality risk. Conclusion. The possibility of using the magnitude of the change in the RDW-SD index as a biomarker of chronic alcohol intoxication in patients with a certain risk of cardiovascular complications is discussed with the rationale for the appointment of folic acid preparations as part of the complex treatment of chronic alcohol intoxication.
