Petrogenesis of the late Cenozoic potassium-rich volcanism in the NW Tibetan Plateau: Constraints on the mantle evolution through post-orogenic events

The late Cenozoic Heishi Beihu volcanic rocks represent potassium-rich magmatic events at the northwesternmost margin of the Tibetan Plateau following the Indian–Asian continental collision. The petrogenesis of this juvenile igneous activity plays a crucial role in revealing the geochemical features of the deep mantle and contributes to our understanding of orogenic geodynamic evolution. This study, identified three eruption episodes at Heishi Beihu volcano (7.1–6.2, 4.3–1.4, and 1.3–1.0 Ma) using SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating. Geochemically, the three episodes are characterized by shoshonitic affinities (K2O = 2.96–4.36 wt%) and crust-like trace-element signatures (negative Ta, Nb, and Ti anomalies), with enrichment in light rare earth (LREE) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILE), depletions in high-field-strength elements (HFSE), and small negative Eu anomalies (0.74–0.86). Their enriched whole-rock Sr ([87Sr/86Sr]i = 0.7072–0.7090), Nd (εNd(t) = −6.91 to −6.24), and zircon Hf (εHf(t) –5.64 to −9.13) isotopic compositions, and high zircon δ18O values (+7.4‰ to +10.6‰), are indicative of an enriched and heterogeneous mantle source (EMII-type) that contained recycled continental crust. The Heishi Beihu volcanic rocks were derived by low-degree (2%) partial melting of a mantle source with dominant pyroxenite and minor peridotite under conditions of the garnet-eclogite-facies. Results obtained from clinopyroxene–liquid geothermobarometry are indicative of diverse magma reservoirs, ranging from deep crustal levels (41–56 km) during Episode I to shallower depths for Episodes II (26–35 km) and III (17–29 km). In combination with the geological development of the area, we infer that magmatism at Heishi Beihu was genetically related to asthenospheric upwelling and induced by underthrusting of the Indian lithosphere beneath Western Kunlun.

Transition from orogenic-like to anorogenic magmatism in the Southern Alps during the Early Mesozoic: Evidence from elemental and Nd-Sr-Hf-Pb isotope geochemistry of alkali-rich dykes from the Finero Phlogopite Peridotite, Ivrea–Verbano Zone

The Ivrea-Verbano Zone (IVZ) in the westernmost sector of the Southern Alps is an iconic upper mantle to lower continental crust sequence of the Adriatic Plate and provides a geological window into the tectono-magmatic events that occurred at the Gondwana–Laurussia boundary from Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic. In this work, we document new geochemical and Nd-Sr-Hf-Pb isotopic data for Early Mesozoic alkali-rich dyke swarms which intruded the Finero Phlogopite Peridotite (northern IVZ) to provide geological constraints on the nature, origin and evolution of Early Mesozoic magmatism in the Southern Alps. The studied dykes are amphibole-phlogopite-bearing and show geochemical features varying between two end-member groups. A dyke group is characterized by HFSE-poor, Al-rich amphibole (Al2O3 up to 16 wt%) with high LILE and LREE contents, high radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.704732 to 0.704934) and low radiogenic Nd isotopes (εNd(i) from –0.1 to –0.7), which support the occurrence of significant amounts of recycled continental crust components in the parental mantle melts and impart an overall “orogenic-like” affinity. This dyke group was largely derived from metasomatized lithospheric mantle sources. The second group is HFSE-rich with Al-poorer amphibole enriched in LILE and LREE, low radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.703761–0.704103) and higher radiogenic Nd isotopes (εNd(i) from +3.4 to +5.4) pointing to an “anorogenic” alkaline affinity and asthenospheric to deep lithospheric mantle sources. Some dykes show both orogenic and anorogenic affinities, providing evidence that the orogenic-like magmatism in the IVZ predates the alkaline anorogenic magmatism. The Finero dyke swarms therefore record a geochemical change of the Early Mesozoic magmatism of the Southern Alps from orogenic-like magmatism, typical of post-collisional settings, to anorogenic alkaline magmatism, common in intraplate to extensional settings, and places a temporal correlation of Early Mesozoic magmatism in the IVZ to those in the eastern and central sectors of the Southern Alps.

An isotopically enriched mantle component in the source of Rodrigues, Réunion volcanic hotspot

The Mascarene Islands in the western Indian Ocean, encompassing La Réunion, Mauritius, and Rodrigues, are the recent (<10 Ma) surface expressions of the Réunion hotspot. Ocean island basalts (OIB) from these islands exhibit a remarkably homogeneous long-lived radiogenic isotopic composition, coinciding with the convergence field of many global OIB trends in the mantle array. Réunion plume-related OIB therefore provide one of Earth’s most pristine representations of this “focal zone” component, which may have a primordial heritage. Besides this signature, Mascarene lavas have been suggested to retain contributions from sources with distinct compositions, including: (1) Archaean-aged zircons assimilated from continental crust within the oceanic lithosphere by trachytic magmas from Mauritius; (2) more deeply recycled continental crust components preserved by elevated 87Sr/86Sr and 208Pb/206Pb in lavas from the Piton des Neiges volcano of Réunion; and (3) an isotopically depleted mantle component resulting from interaction with Central Indian Ridge material.In this study we use Sr-Nd-Pb isotope systematics, along with major and trace element compositions of basaltic lavas from all three Mascarene Islands to investigate the relationship of their sources to well-characterized mantle endmembers. Among the Mascarene Islands, Rodrigues lavas are the most enriched in highly incompatible elements, likely reflecting shallower and lower degrees of partial melting than Réunion or Mauritius. Combined Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions indicate that lavas from the Older Series of Mauritius resemble those from Réunion, whereas lavas from the Younger and Intermediate Series, together with Rodrigues, are consistent with contributions from an isotopically depleted component. In addition, the Pb isotopic compositions of Rodrigues samples require an additional contribution from a component with a long-term enrichment in its Th/U ratio. Based on isotope mixing models, direct assimilation of continental crust embedded within the oceanic lithosphere is unlikely to account for the Pb isotopic variation of Rodrigues. A metasomatized mantle component, previously envisaged as a “fossil” Réunion plume near the Central Indian Ridge, is partially able to reproduce the trace element signature, but not the observed Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of Rodrigues. Instead, small proportions (<5%) of an EM1-like component provide a preferred endmember. The composition and origin of this component, which is exclusively reflected within Rodrigues lavas, may constitute a new geochemical feature of the Mascarene Islands and is consistent with geodynamical predictions that small-scale enriched mantle domains may be widespread in the source regions of hotspot volcanoes.

Archean Pb isotope variability tracks crust-mantle fractionation, granite production, and ore deposit formation

Various geological processes that affect Earth's crust may be encoded into isotopic tracers preserved in rocks and minerals. The enhanced sensitivity of U, Th, and Pb to crustal fractionation processes allows Pb isotopes to complement information from the Nd and Hf isotope systems. However, melt fractionation, crustal contamination and recycling, hydrothermal fluid flow and fluid-rock interaction, and other processes in the continental crust can lead to mixing of Pb isotopic signatures. Here, we report new Pb isotopic data from granite-K-feldspar and integrate these data with published Pb isotope ratios from granite K-feldspar and Pb-rich ores across the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia. The aim of this study is to explore how the variability of Pb isotope ratios and derivative parameters can be used to gain information on specific geological processes occurring throughout the crustal column. We develop a model that subdivides different sampling media into chemical process groups and links their initial Pb signatures to Pb source regions and fractionation processes at various locations within the crust and upper mantle. Equilibration of Pb signatures with a primary mantle source reservoir (in part represented by volcanic-hosted massive sulfides) is contrasted with granite formation in the mid to lower crust (granite K-feldspar), and mineralization of ore deposits in the mid to upper crust (Pb-rich ores). Spatial trends similar to those in Nd and Hf isotopic data are recorded by Pb isotopic derivative parameters (μ = source 238U/204Pb, ω = 232Th/204Pb, and Δt - the difference between true sample age and Pb model age) calculated for komatiite-hosted Ni sulfide ores, granite K-feldspar, and volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) ores. The significance of subtle differences in absolute values of derivative parameters is supported by the diversity of Pb isotope ratios, Pb model ages, and ∆t as tracked by a statistical metric, quantifying the variability of Pb sources involved in the formation of different chemical process groups. Generally greater variety in an older terrane (Youanmi) documents more ancient and recycled continental crust as compared with more homogeneous Pb isotopic signatures in a younger terrane (Eastern Goldfields Superterrane). The Pb signatures are interpreted, in part, to relate to the timing of source fractionation in the upper mantle with a legacy of this source signal preserved through various depths in the lithospheric section. The least radiogenic VHMS ore samples appear to provide a good approximation of mantle Pb signatures, indicated for example by a deficit in 206Pb and 208Pb relative to the other process groups. A significant heterogeneity recorded in Pb isotopic data from Pb-rich gold ores is explained by the interplay of hydrothermal fluids with diverse sources leading to the mineralization of gold deposits (e.g., leaching of Pb from surrounding rocks or fluid mixing). Such gold ore Pb signatures are distinct from other process groups, which together track sources less heterogeneous in age and/or U and Th.

Olivines and Their Melt Inclusions in Potassic Volcanic Rocks Record Mantle Heterogeneity beneath the Southern Tibet

Abstract Constraints on mantle heterogeneity are important for understanding geochemical differentiation and recycling in Earth’s interior. Alkali basalts are of particular interest in this context due to the clear signatures of recycled components that they yield. Previous studies have focused more on oceanic basalts than on continental mafic rocks because the chemical and isotopic characteristics of the latter are often modified by crustal contamination; however, high-forsterite olivine crystals and olivine-hosted melt inclusions may record the compositions of primitive melts before extensive crustal contamination, providing valuable insights into mantle heterogeneity. Here we report the results of high-precision major-, minor-, and trace-element and Pb isotope analyses of olivine phenocrysts and melt inclusions from the Sailipu potassic alkali basalts from southern Tibet, which constrain the mantle source of continental potassic alkali basalts. The minor- and trace-element compositions of the olivine phenocrysts (e.g. Ni and Ca contents and 100 × Mn/Fe, 10 000 × Zn/Fe, and Ni/Co ratios) suggest that the primary magmas were derived from a phlogopite-bearing pyroxenite source in which peridotite residues were also present. The low- and high-Li contents of the olivine phenocrysts suggest the recycling of continental crustal material in their mantle source. Comparing the major-element compositions (e.g. SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, MnO, CaO, and Na2O contents), FCMS and FCKANTMS parameters, and pseudo-ternary projections of the primary Sailipu magmas with experimental data suggests that the primary magmas were partial melts of olivine-poor or carbonated olivine-poor lithologies with a small amount of peridotite residue. The negative Nb and Ta and positive Pb anomalies seen in primitive mantle-normalized trace-element patterns and the extremely low Nb/U ratios of the melt inclusions suggest that recycling of continental crust was the main process involved in enriching the mantle source of the Sailipu magmas. The heterogeneous Pb isotopic compositions of the melt inclusions (208Pb/206Pb = 2.089 – 2.158; 207Pb/206Pb = 0.851 – 0.858) are consistent with the presence of peridotite residue in this source. The subduction of Indian continental crust introduced enriched material (including carbonatites) into the mantle.

The ∼2.3 Ga magmatic event in tectonic quiescent period: Geochronological and geochemical constraints from the Xiaohe granite in the Xiaoqinling Terrane at southern North China Craton

The early Paleoproterozic is generally considered as a worldwide tectonic quiescent period. It is unusual that widespread early Paleoproterozoic magmatism has been identified in the North China Craton (NCC), especially in the Xiaoqinling Terrane at the southern NCC. The Xiaohe granite occurs along the southern margin of the Xiaoqinling Terrane and intrudes the lower portion of the Taihua Supergroup (gneisses). Previous data suggest the emplacement time of the Xiaohe granite ranging from the early to late Paleoproterozoic, leaving a controversy over 500 Ma. To accurately constrain the age, genesis and tectonic setting of the Xiao granite, we have carried out a comprehensive study and here present new petrographical, geochronological, and isotope and element geochemical data. It is confirmed that the Xiaohe granite is dominated by the ca. 2.3-Ga monzogranite and locally intruded by the Guijiayu granites at 1.82 ± 0.05 Ga. Three samples from the Xiaohe granite yield consistent zircon U − Pb ages of ca. 2.3 Ga, and ɛHf(t) values showing mixing of juvenile and recycled continental crust sources. The Xiaohe granite are characterized by high SiO2 (70.7–79.6 %) and high alkali (5.67–10.15 %), belong to calc-alkaline to shoshonite series and show weak peraluminous feature with A/CNK values around 1.1. Its geochemical characteristics are similar to those of A-type granites formed involcani arc or syn- to post-collision tectonic settings. Samples also display eastward decrease of Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N and δEu values, and weakening REE fractionation, indicating an eastward increase of plagioclase in residue during partial melting of the crust, and the magma sources become shallow eastwardly. Hence it is concluded that the Xiaohe granite was formed in a widespread granitic event associated with continental collision or terrane amalgamation.

Contribution of continental subduction to very light B isotope signatures in post-collisional magmas: Evidence from southern Tibetan ultrapotassic rocks

Understanding the subduction and recycling of continental crust is crucial for reconstructing the long-term evolutionary history of Earth's mantle and crust. The Himalaya-Tibet orogen is arguably the world's best natural laboratory for investigating these processes. Cenozoic post-collisional ultrapotassic volcanic rocks are common in the Lhasa block of southern Tibet and they can provide important clues to crust-mantle interaction in a well-characterized continental collision zone. Understanding the sources and processes that generated these lavas can contribute to our understanding of the thermal and compositional characteristics of the deep mantle and geodynamic processes in this region, including Indian continental subduction. In this contribution, we report Sr-Nd-Pb-O-B isotope and elemental chemistry data for post-collisional (13-11 Ma) ultrapotassic rocks from the TangraYumco-Xuruco rift (TYXR) in the Lhasa block. The arc-like trace-element signatures and markedly enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-O isotope compositions indicate that these mafic rocks originate from a mantle source containing recycled crustal components. Unlike pre-collisional (∼64 Ma) ultrapotassic rocks in the Lhasa block with arc-like B/Nb (0.85-1.89) and δ11B (−9.0 to −2.5‰) values, the TYXR post-collisional ultrapotassic rocks with much lower B/Nb (0.05-0.85) and δ11B (down to −20.5‰) values resemble Miocene K-rich volcanic rocks from western Anatolia. These western Anatolian rocks have been formed by either progressive dehydration of a stalled slab or deep-subducted continental crust. However, some TYXR samples have lower B/Nb ratios than MORB, consistent with a fluid-starved source. These markedly negative δ11B in conjunction with low B/Nb cannot be explained by the addition of melts from oceanic sediments, which generally yield lower B/Nb but higher δ11B values than MORB (e.g., the Armenia post-collisional mafic rocks). Given the low δ11B of Indian upper continental crust and its similar Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic signatures to the post-collisional lavas, it is clear that the post-collisional ultrapotassic rocks in the Lhasa block contain a significant component derived from subducted Indian continental crust. Combined with the temporal evolution of regional magmatism, tectonics and geophysical data, we propose that the break-off and tearing of subducted Indian continental slab induced post-collisional magmatism in the Lhasa block. Our case study provides evidence that continental subduction contributes to very light B isotope compositions of post-collisional magmas, which suggests that B isotopes have the potential to discriminate between oceanic subduction and continental subduction.

Episodic emplacement of the Lingshan Granitic Complex and related two-stage molybdenum mineralization in the Dabie orogenic belt

The Lingshan Granitic Complex consists of a granitic batholith and its proximal Mushan and Xiaofan porphyry stocks, and hosts stockwork-type Mo mineralization within the porphyry stocks and the fine-grained monzogranite, and several vein-type Mo occurrences in the coarse-grained porphyritic monzogranite. All these rocks show similar values of the whole-rock initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.70442–0.70987), εNd(t) (–17.2 to –11.0), and zircon εHf(t) (–27.2 to –9.3), indicating their derivation from partial melting of the Paleoproterozoic-Neoarchean recycled continental crust induced by basaltic underplating at the crust-mantle boundary. The zircon U-Pb and molybdenite Re-Os geochronological results indicate that the Lingshan Granitic Complex was formed by at least two pulses of magmatism at 140–137 Ma and 128–125 Ma, accompanied by two periods of Mo mineralization, which is the epitome of the peak granitic magmatism and related Mo mineralization in the whole Dabie orogenic belt. Combined with previous data, it can be concluded that the discontinuous and episodic nature of magma emplacement in the whole Dabie Mo metallogenic belt has significant consequences for large-scale, multi-staged Mo mineralization. Although Mo mineralization can occur in various lithofacies of the Lingshan Granitic Complex, the industrial Mo enrichment mainly lies within the small shallow emplacement granite porphyry stocks and subordinately within the fine-grained phase of the pluton. These features indicate that the Mo industrial enrichment is not only related to the highly evolved magma, but also more closely related to mechanism of magma emplacement. Rapid decompression induced by rapid ascent of the Mo-bearing granite porphyry stocks, and rapid crystallization of magma induced by quickly cooling due to conductive heat loss to the sidewalls of the fine-grained phase of the outer zone of the granite batholith, are favorable for the ore-fluid exsolution responsible for the magmatic-hydrothermal Mo mineralization.

Continental crust recycling in ancient oceanic subduction zone: Geochemical insights from arc basaltic to andesitic rocks and paleo-trench sediments in southern Tibet

The recycling of continental crust via trench sediment subduction and subduction erosion is well established in modern oceanic subduction zones, and this is fundamental to subduction zone magmatism and mantle heterogeneity. Although a similar process likely took place in ancient oceanic subduction zones, its evaluation is difficult because most geological records were erased by subsequent continental collision and post-collisional reworking processes. To address this issue, a comprehensive geochemical study was conducted for Mesozoic basaltic to andesitic plutonic rocks and surviving contemporaneous paleo-trench sediments from the Himalayan orogen in southern Tibet. These plutonic rocks show variably enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope compositions with εNd(t) values varying from −5.6 to +4.7, which are neither positively nor negatively correlated with Mg# values. This indicates that they were not affected by crustal contamination but rather inherited from heterogeneous magma sources. There are consistently continuous variations in the Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope space among the paleo-trench sediments, the arc plutonic rocks, and basaltic rocks from the Yarlung Tsangpo ophiolite suites, indicating that the binary mixing between the paleo-trench sediment-derived melts and the ambient mantle dictated the radiogenic isotope compositions of the arc igneous rocks. These qualitative interpretations are further verified by quantitative geochemical examination of the compositional links in Nd and Hf isotopes between the paleo-trench sediments and arc rocks. As a consequence, the present study has for the first time identified and systematically demonstrated the key role of paleo-trench sediments in constraining the continental crust recycling as well as the origin and compositional heterogeneity of arc igneous rocks above ancient oceanic subduction zones.

Biotite compositions and geochemistry of porphyry-related systems from the central Urumieh Dokhtar Magmatic Belt, western Yazd, Iran: Insights into mineralization potential

Commonly biotite occurs as a minor rock-forming mineral in a wide range of felsic to intermediate intrusive rocks. It can record the physicochemical conditions of the parent magma due to its complex crystal structure that allows multiple site substitutions of a wide range of elements. Geochemical studies of whole rocks and biotite (using EPMA and LA-ICP-MS methods) with petrographic analysis of biotite provide distinction between barren and fertile granitoids in western Yazd. Fertile suites are characterized by Si- and Mg-rich (3.47–4.35, ave. 3.75 a.p.f.u.) and total REE-poor biotite. In contrast, Fe (2.66–3.15, ave. 3.08 a.p.f.u.), Al, Ti, and REEs (in particular HREE+Y) increase in barren rocks. On the basis of biotite geobarometry, the fertile rocks (Darezereshk Porphyry Copper Deposit (PCD)) solidified at low pressure (ca. 0.6 kb, i.e., subvolcanic); in contrast, the barren rocks (Galvic and Shirkouh granodiorites) crystallized at higher pressures (1.1 to 3.6 kb). The temperature of the fertile granitoids is inferred to be about 750 °C, whereas T's of 625–675 °C for barren granitoids. The fertile suites have redox characteristic near the Ni-NiO buffer, whereas the barren suites are more reduced, near the quartz-fayalite-magnetite (QFM) buffer. Therefore, biotite major-element compositions, fertile magma bodies are emplaced at higher temperature and redox to lower pressures (subvolcanically) than the barren intrusive bodies. The whole-rock geochemical signatures show that both barren and fertile suites are represented by peraluminous to metaluminous granite to diorite that have calc-alkaline characteristics with an I-type volcanic arc (VAG) tectonic setting. However, fertile suites originated from the mantle-crust mixed magma exhibiting calc-alkaline affinity, whereas the barren suites are derived predominantly from recycling of continental crust.

Recycling of subducted continental crust: Geochemical evidence from syn-exhumation Triassic alkaline mafic rocks of the southern Liaodong Peninsula

Syn-exhumation mafic magmatism during continental collision provides insights into the crust-mantle reaction during deep subduction and the nature of orogenic lithospheric mantle in collisional orogens. In this study, we present a comprehensive data set of zircon U-Pb ages and whole-rock major-trace elements as well as Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes of alkaline mafic rocks from the southern Liaodong Peninsula, eastern China. Zircon U-Pb analyses yield Late Triassic age of 213 ± 3 to 217 ± 3 Ma, younger than the Middle Triassic ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks of the Dabie-Sulu orogen. Thus, the alkaline mafic rocks are products of syn-exhumation magmatism during continental collision of the South and North China blocks. The rocks show shoshonitic affinities with high K2O (3.78–5.23 wt%) and K2O/Na2O (0.71–1.22). They are characterized by arc-like trace-element patterns with enriched LILE, Pb, and LREE, and depleted HFSE. They exhibit enriched Sr-Nd isotopic compositions with high initial 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios of 0.7058–0.7061 and negative εNd(t) values of −13.0 to −15.1. These results suggest involvement of recycled continental crust in their mantle source. The mantle source likely formed by the metasomatic reaction of subducted continental crust-derived melts with the overlying subcontinental lithospheric mantle during the Triassic continental collision. Decompressional melting of this metasomatized mantle formed syn-exhumation mafic magmas during the transition from convergent to extensional tectonics in the Late Triassic. Accordingly, mafic rocks from the southern Liaodong Peninsula provide a geochemical record of the subduction and recycling of continental crust into the mantle and melt-mantle reaction induced metasomatism within the orogen.

Recycling of continental crust in the southern North China Craton: Constraints from the Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–O isotopic compositions of Early Cretaceous Funiushan granites

This paper reports new zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–O isotopic compositions for the Funiushan (FNS) pluton of the southern North China Craton (NCC). These data and statistical analyses of previously reported compositions of late Mesozoic granites from the southern NCC are used to constrain late Mesozoic continental recycling and geodynamic processes. The FNS pluton includes coexisting early Early Cretaceous (140 Ma), late Early Cretaceous (130–116 Ma) and highly evolved granites (HEGs; 126–125 Ma). The early Early Cretaceous granites have high Sr contents (332–566 ppm), high Sr/Y (53–138) and (La/Yb)N (29–52) ratios, and low MgO contents (0.15–0.48 wt%). They have relatively low (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.7051–0.7054), relatively high εNd(t) values (−4.11 to −3.96) and variable εHf(t) values (−22.9 to −0.53). They are also characterized by high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.893–17.975) and relatively low δ18O values (5.34‰–7.48‰) as well as Neoproterozoic (851–734 Ma) inherited zircons, suggesting that they have an adakitic affinity formed by recycling of subducted continental crust of the Yangtze Craton (YC) with input from a mantle component. In contrast, the late Early Cretaceous granites have relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.7077–0.7085), low εNd(t) values (−14.2 to −12.0), relatively high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.398–17.497), εHf(t) values of −23.7 to −10.7, and δ18O values of 5.76‰–6.55‰. These data, and the Neoproterozoic zircon ages (716–702 Ma), indicate that the primary magmas formed from recycled YC crust with a minor contribution from the NCC basement. The late Early Cretaceous HEGs have relatively high εNd(t) values (−9.33 to −8.70), high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.656–17.885), intermediate εHf(t) values (−12.3 to −6.18), and relatively low δ18O values (5.22‰–6.72‰), indicating that they formed from subducted YC and mantle material. Previous work on granites of the southern NCC has established two phases of granite formation. Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous I-type granites (160–130 Ma) occur throughout the southern NCC. These are adakitic and formed from thickened lower continental crust (LCC). Late Early Cretaceous A-type granites (130–110 Ma) formed from thinned LCC. The differences between Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous granites and late Early Cretaceous granites reflect a transformation in tectonic regime from thickening to thinning, which is attributed to rollback of the subducting Paleo-Pacific Plate.

Geochemical and lead isotope compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from the Yaeyama Graben in the southern Okinawa Trough: Implications for slab subduction and magmatic processes

Chemical compositions were measured in olivine-hosted melt inclusions in basaltic volcanic rocks from the Yaeyama Graben in the southern Okinawa Trough to investigate the magmatic processes of erupted lavas in an incipient epicontinental back-arc basin in the western Pacific. Melt inclusions have widely variable element and Pb isotope compositions, while erupted host whole-rock compositions are homogeneous, suggesting that melt inclusions preserve more information about magmatic processes than their host whole rocks. Two groups of melt inclusions can be distinguished by their trace elements and Pb isotopes. Group 1 melt inclusions have geochemical compositions similar to those of their host whole rocks, which have low 207Pb/206Pb ratios (<0.850), and may be attributed to the contributions of recycled continental crust and subducted sediments to magma sources during Philippine Sea Plate subduction. Group 2 melt inclusions have higher 207Pb/206Pb ratios (>0.850) and Li, Rb, and U contents and lower Cu, Zn, and Pb contents than their host whole rocks. High Li, Rb, and U contents may be induced by specific melts generated by possible breakdown reactions of some accessory minerals, such as phengite and cordierite, while low Cu, Zn, and Pb contents are attributed to sulfide precipitation, metal flushing and/or metallic element fractionation during magma evolution. The Pb isotopes of the group 2 melt inclusions are similar to those of the Kuanhsi-Chutung basalts, which are correlated with some intraplate volcanism in the Fujian-Taiwan region. We infer that the group 2 melts were preexisting small volumes of magma that were emplaced in the middle-lower continental crust (~11 km), experienced extensive magma evolution and were entrained by upwelling magma. Our melt inclusion data suggest that magma sources are compositionally heterogeneous and that the mixing of magmas from different sources may be widespread beneath the southern Okinawa Trough because of Philippine Sea Plate subduction and preexisting intraplate magmatism.

Spatial Characteristics of Recycled and Primordial Reservoirs in the Deep Mantle

AbstractThe spatial distribution of the geochemical domains hosting recycled crust and primordial (high‐3He/4He) reservoirs, and how they are linked to mantle convection, are poorly understood. Two continent‐sized seismic anomalies located near the core‐mantle boundary—called the Large Low Shear Wave Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs)—are potential geochemical reservoir hosts. It has been suggested that high‐3He/4He hotspots are spatially confined to the LLSVPs, hotspots sampling recycled continental crust are associated with only one of the LLSVPs, and recycled continental crust shows no relationship with latitude. We reevaluate the links between LLSVPs and isotopic signatures of hotspot lavas using improved mantle flow models including plume conduit advection. While most hotspots with the highest‐3He/4He can indeed be traced to the LLSVP interiors, at least one high‐3He/4He hotspot, Yellowstone, is located outside of the LLSVPs. This suggests high‐3He/4He is not geographically confined to the LLSVPs. Instead, a positive correlation between hotspot buoyancy flux and maximum hotspot 3He/4He suggests that it is plume dynamics (i.e., buoyancy), not geography, which determines whether a dense, deep, and possibly widespread high‐3He/4He reservoir is entrained. We also show that plume‐fed EM hotspots (enriched mantle, with low‐143Nd/144Nd), signaling recycled continental crust, are spatially linked to both LLSVPs, and located primarily in the southern hemisphere. Lastly, we confirm that hotspots sampling HIMU (“high‐μ,” or high 238U/204Pb) domains are not spatially limited to the LLSVPs. These findings clarify and advance our understanding of deep mantle reservoir distributions, and we discuss how continental and oceanic crust subduction is consistent with the spatial decoupling of EM and HIMU.

Assessing Origins of End‐Triassic Tholeiites From Eastern North America Using Hafnium Isotopes

AbstractThe driving processes responsible for producing the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, the Large Igneous Province associated with end‐Triassic rifting of Pangea, remain largely debated. Because their compositions encompass most of the Central Atlantic basalt spectrum, tholeiites from southern Eastern North America are considered pivotal for identifying magma origins. New 176Hf/177Hf measurements for 201 Ma Eastern North American tholeiites dominantly record a local petrogenetic history. Their εHf ratios, corrected to an emplacement age of 201 Ma (−7.85 to +5.86), form a positive but shallowly sloped array slightly deviating from the terrestrial array on a εHf versus εNd diagram. Comparison of 176Hf/177Hf to other isotope ratios and trace elements helps to rule out several petrogenetic scenarios, particularly mixing of melts from global depleted or enriched mantle components. In contrast, partial melting of subduction‐metasomatized mantle can explain the parental magma composition for southern Eastern North America. Such metasomatism likely occurred during Paleozoic subduction around Pangea and may have been dominated by sediment‐derived fluid reactions. The observed 176Hf/177Hf versus 143Nd/144Nd array may reflect subsequent assimilation of lower continental crust, perhaps together with limited direct melting of recycled continental crust in the asthenosphere. The proposed recycling scenario does not specifically support or preclude a mantle plume origin for the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province but instead points toward the presence of a distinct local mantle source and crustal assimilation processes during magma transport. Detailed understanding of these local effects is needed in order to more accurately understand the origins of Large Igneous Provinces.

A trace of recycled continental crust in the Réunion hotspot

Réunion Island is the present surface expression of a major mantle plume whose homogeneity and isotopic signature, near the convergence point of many hotspot isotopic arrays, have long puzzled geochemists. This signature could, in part, reflect oversampling of the most recent (<0.53 Ma) Piton de la Fournaise volcano. To resolve this issue, we studied the older Piton des Neiges volcano and made a synthesis of the Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions of lavas produced during the early stage of La Réunion and contemporaneously at Mauritius, the second youngest island of the hotspot track.New samples from Piton des Neiges have 87Sr/86Sr from 0.70429 to 0.70441, 143Nd/144Nd from 0.51282 to 0.51290, 206Pb/204Pb from 18.765 to 19.004, 207Pb/204Pb from 15.558 to 15.605 and 208Pb/204Pb from 38.850 to 39.082. On a SrNd isotope plot, the extended isotope field defined by the Réunion and Mauritius volcanoes overlaps with the OIB field of the Society islands, where an EM-2 signature has been recognized. Réunion also has higher 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios for a given 206Pb/204Pb than expected from a binary mixing between depleted and enriched mantle components. Thus, the overall Sr-Nd-Pb isotope variations shown by Réunion and Mauritius volcanoes require a third source component. In addition to the already known depleted and enriched mantle components, the third component involved in the mixing is interpreted as reflecting a small contribution (≤ 8%) of Seychelles/Madagascar-like continental crust, which is incorporated into the plume before it rises into the depleted mantle. This new model challenges the proposed existence of a hidden continent below the island of Mauritius, by suggesting that the continental component is located in the asthenosphere.

Origins of the terrestrial Hf-Nd mantle array: Evidence from a combined geodynamical-geochemical approach

The formation and segregation of oceanic and continental crust from the mantle, and its return to the mantle via subduction and/or delamination, leads to the development of distinct geochemical reservoirs in the terrestrial mantle. Fundamental questions remain regarding the location, nature, and residence time of these reservoirs, as well as the respective roles of oceanic and continental crust in the development of the mantle's geochemical endmembers. The Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotope systems behave similarly in magmatic systems and together form the terrestrial mantle Hf-Nd isotopic array. Here we combine a geodynamic model of mantle convection with isotope and trace element (TE) geochemistry to investigate the evolution of the Hf-Nd mantle array. This study examines the sensitivity to: TE partition coefficients used in the formation of oceanic crust; density contrasts between subducting oceanic crust and the mantle; and the formation and recycling of continental crust. We show that the fractionation between the parent (Lu and Sm) and daughter (Hf and Nd) species needs to be higher than is indicated by partition coefficients determined from the present-day melting environment. This is consistent with the suggestion of deeper mantle melting earlier in Earth history and an increased role for residual garnet. Subduction and accumulation of dense oceanic crust produces a large mass of incompatible TE enriched material in the deep mantle. This deep mantle enrichment appears to play a more significant role than the extraction and recycling of continental crust in developing the Hf and Nd isotope and TE compositions of the mid-ocean ridge mantle source. The corollary of this result is that the formation of the continental crust plays a secondary role, contrary to the currently accepted paradigm. Nevertheless, the inclusion of continental crust formation and recycling produces a broader model mantle array, which better reproduces the spread in the natural data set. This model also produces the Hf and Nd isotope and TE compositions of the upper mantle and continental crust, as well as deep mantle compositions similar to those of plume-fed ocean island basalts. Our model is consistent with continental growth models based on the Lu-Hf isotopic composition of zircon, which suggest that 50–70% of the present-day mass of the continental crust is produced prior to 3 Ga, and that the recycling of continental crust becomes more prevalent after this time.

Sub-arc xenolith Fe-Li-Pb isotopes and textures tell tales of their journey through the mantle wedge and crust

Island arcs provide insights into the origin and recycling of continental crust, but questions remain concerning source metasomatism, the depth of differentiation, the potential role of amphibole fractionation, and the time scales involved. Basaltic andesites on Batan Island (Philippines) contain ≥150 Ma peridotite fragments encased in hornblendite and gabbroic rinds produced via melt-rock reaction. The peridotites have some of the lightest δ7Li and δ57Fe values yet measured in mantle rocks. These values are too fractionated to have been created solely by equilibrium partial melting and thus require a combination of melt depletion and slab fluid addition and may be derived from diffusion-modified melt channel wall rocks. Stable isotope signals are easily modified by diffusive equilibration between peridotite and host magma, so the preservation of light δ7Li and δ57Fe here suggests magma ascent rates of ∼10 km yr−1. We show that melt–wall rock reactions at ∼25–30 km depth led to the crystallization of amphibole (± plagioclase) followed by gabbroic fractionation at ∼7 km depth. The former provides a location and mechanism for the “cryptic” amphibole fractionation observed in these and perhaps many other arc lavas and may obviate the requirement for delamination of cumulates.

Cold plumes trigger contamination of oceanic mantle wedges with continental crust-derived sediments: Evidence from chromitite zircon grains of eastern Cuban ophiolites

The origin of zircon grains, and other exotic minerals of typical crustal origin, in mantle-hosted ophiolitic chromitites are hotly debated. We report a population of zircon grains with ages ranging from Cretaceous (99 Ma) to Neoarchean (2750 Ma), separated from massive chromitite bodies hosted in the mantle section of the supra-subduction (SSZ)-type Mayarí-Baracoa Ophiolitic Belt in eastern Cuba. Most analyzed zircon grains (n = 20, 287 ± 3 Ma to 2750 ± 60 Ma) are older than the early Cretaceous age of the ophiolite body, show negative εHf(t) (−26 to −0.6) and occasional inclusions of quartz, K-feldspar, biotite, and apatite that indicate derivation from a granitic continental crust. In contrast, 5 mainly rounded zircon grains (297 ± 5 Ma to 2126 ± 27 Ma) show positive εHf(t) (+0.7 to +13.5) and occasional apatite inclusions, suggesting their possible crystallization from melts derived from juvenile (mantle) sources. Interestingly, younger zircon grains are mainly euhedral to subhedral crystals, whereas older zircon grains are predominantly rounded grains. A comparison of the ages and Hf isotopic compositions of the zircon grains with those of nearby exposed crustal terranes suggest that chromitite zircon grains are similar to those reported from terranes of Mexico and northern South America. Hence, chromitite zircon grains are interpreted as sedimentary-derived xenocrystic grains that were delivered into the mantle wedge beneath the Greater Antilles intra-oceanic volcanic arc by metasomatic fluids/melts during subduction processes. Thus, continental crust recycling by subduction could explain all populations of old xenocrystic zircon in Cretaceous mantle-hosted chromitites from eastern Cuba ophiolite. We integrate the results of this study with petrological-thermomechanical modeling and existing geodynamic models to propose that ancient zircon xenocrysts, with a wide spectrum of ages and Hf isotopic compositions, can be transferred to the mantle wedge above subducting slabs by cold plumes.

S-type granite generation and emplacement during a regional switch from extensional to contractional deformation (Central Iberian Zone, Iberian autochthonous domain, Variscan Orogeny)

Zircon grains extracted from S-type granites of the Meda-Escalhao-Penedono Massif (Central Iberian Zone, Variscan Orogen) constrain the timing of emplacement and provide information about potential magma sources. Simple and composite zircon grains from three samples of S-type granite were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS. New U–Pb data indicate that granites crystallized in the Bashkirian (318.7 ± 4.8 Ma) overlapping the proposed age range of ca. 321–317 Ma of the nearby S-type granitic rocks of the Carrazeda de Anciaes, Lamego and Ucanha-Vilar massifs. The timing of emplacement of such S-type granites seems to coincide with the waning stages of activity of a D2 extensional shear zone (i.e. Pinhel shear zone) developed in metamorphic conditions that reached partial melting and anatexis (ca. 321–317 Ma). Dykes of two-mica granites (resembling diatexite migmatite) are concordant and discordant to the compositional layering and S2 (main) foliation of the high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Pinhel shear zone. Much of the planar fabric in these dykes was formed during magmatic crystallization and subsequent solid-state deformation. Field relationships suggest contemporaneity between the ca. 319–317 Ma old magmatism of the study area and the switch from late D2 extensional deformation to early D3 contractional deformation. Inherited zircon cores are well preserved in these late D2-early D3 S-type granite plutons. U–Pb ages of inherited zircon cores range from ca. 2576 to ca. 421 Ma. The spectra of inherited cores overlap closely the range of detrital and magmatic zircon grains displayed by the Ediacaran to Silurian metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks of the Iberian autochthonous and parautochthonous domains. This is evidence of a genetic relationship between S-type granites and the host metamorphic rocks. There is no substantial evidence for the addition of mantle-derived material in the genesis of these late D2–early D3 S-type granitic rocks. The eNd arrays of heterogeneous crustal anatectic melts may be just inherited from the source, probably reflecting mixing of a range of crustal materials with different ages and primary isotopic signatures. The generation of the Bashkirian S-type granites has been dominated by continental crust recycling, rather than the addition of new material from mantle sources.
