Economic Impact Study of the New Crown Epidemic

The outbreak's impact on the world as a whole, particularly the world economy, has been enormous. Although there have been studies on the impact of the epidemic on certain areas and sectors, there is a lack of comparative summaries and a lack of a more comprehensive exploration of the results of the epidemic. This paper aims to synthesise a number of papers to summarise and analyse the impact of the outbreak on the economy in China, such as a decrease in consumption and the number of products produced. In the future, people should identify the existing problems in various fields, solve the problems by combining the actual situation of the current era, and the state should summarise the relevant laws and introduce relevant policies to accelerate the economic recovery speed, help the economic development, and build the country into a rich, intense, democratic, civilised, harmonious and modern socialist power as soon as possible.

Therapeutic effects of powered exoskeletal robot-assisted gait training in inpatients in the early stage after stroke: a pilot case-controlled study

BackgroundRobot-assisted rehabilitation is considered beneficial for functional recovery in patients with stroke, but the therapeutic effect remains inconclusive. The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of gait training assisted by a user-initiated powered exoskeletal robot (UIPER) in patients in the early stage after stroke. We also characterized patients’ improvement by analyzing chronological changes in clinical measurements together with gait parameters obtained from internal sensors in the exoskeletal robot.MethodsIn this pilot case-controlled study, 17 and 81 patients with stroke onset durations of < 3 months were included in the robot-assisted combined with conventional treatment (RT + CT) group and conventional treatment only (CT) group, respectively. The UIPER, which provides knee flexion and extension support and has hip and knee sensors, was applied to guide gait performance in the RT + CT group. The patients in the RT + CT group received robot-assisted gait training for 40 min/ session, 1 session a day, and 2–3 sessions a week (6 sessions in total). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients reaching the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in the 5-meter walking speed (5MWS) assessment, and the secondary outcomes were the MCID for the six-minute walking test, the Berg Balance Scale, the Barthel Index, the Fugl-Meyer assessment, and the timed up and go test before, during, and after the interventions. Gait parameters of the hip and knee were evaluated at baseline, midterm, and final sessions.ResultsGait function improved in both groups after the intervention (both P < 0.05). Gait analysis revealed improvements in gait in the RT + CT group, as indicated by increases in the perimeter and area of the hip–knee cyclogram, as well as the range of motion in the hip joint.ConclusionsGait training assisted by UIPER facilitates the recovery of walking speed and activities of daily living in patients with stroke, and these improvements may be related to improvements in gait parameters. Randomized controlled studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.Trial registrationThis trial was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Chang Gung Medical Foundation (No. 202200822B0).

Emphasis is placed on their role in creating patient-specific rehabilitation plans and addressing barriers to adoption, including cost and accessibility. The findings underscore the need for innovative, cost-effective solutions to broaden the impact of these advancements globally.

Smoking is considered one of the risk factors for various diseases, not only related to the respiratory system but also influencing the physiological processes of various organs and body systems. This article aims to deepen the understanding of the effects of smoking on bone healing by analyzing its molecular, cellular, and clinical bases. This process is subject to possible direct or indirect interferences from chemical substances such as nicotine. It is important to note that, besides conventional cigarettes, there is also indiscriminate use of electronic cigarettes, which, according to an analysis conducted by Pérez and Duarte (2022), have considerably higher nicotine levels than traditional cigarettes. Another study conducted by González et al. (2021) highlights the increasing popularity of these devices among young people, underscoring the importance of preventive measures. According to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO), inhaling tobacco smoke increases bone tissue healing time by 60%, thus delaying the body's ability to heal injuries and compromising bone absorption. The clinical repercussions of smoking on the quality and speed of bone recovery after fractures and orthopedic procedures are identified to improve understanding and develop specific clinical strategies and interventions for smoking patients. The specific objectives of this research were to: investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the bone healing process, analyze the effects of smoking on the quality of the formed tissue, evaluate the influence of smoking on the bone healing time in patients after fracture or orthopedic surgery, and finally propose therapeutic strategies and preventive measures to improve bone healing. To this end, a bibliographic search was conducted on articles relevant to the topic using various means. The selection of articles was based on three stages, choosing those that met the inclusion criteria. During the development of this article, it is observed that smoking is an extended and ancestral practice, being a constant and emerging health problem. Additionally, it is considered a modifiable risk factor for decreasing bone density. In conclusion, the need for specific strategies to address complications in bone healing in smoking patients is highlighted.

Natural helical carboxymethyl cellulose fibers-based actuator for smart controller applications

Water-responsive polymers have received great attention in the field of smart actuators due to their mechanical response to humidity without energy consumption. Natural polymers-based actuators are competitive because of their green, sustainable, and biocompatible characteristics. In this paper, we report a natural twisting carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) fiber-based actuator (TCFA) with remarkable performance under water and moist stimulation. The water-responsive CMC fibers were prepared using wet spinning and twisting. Owing to the helical structure, good water absorption, and swelling performance, the CMC fiber exhibits excellent rotational motion with a rotation speed of 4615 rpm and recovery speed of 1538.4 rpm under water stimulation. In addition, the actuator revolutions remained almost constant after more than 254 cycles, thus demonstrating the excellent cyclic stability of this untwisting recovery process. Moreover, the CMC fiber shows application in a smart rainy curtain, smart crane, and concentration detection for alcohol solution. We offer an easy and scalable method to obtain a CMC fiber-based actuator with low cost, sustainability as well as excellent driving performance. Our work inspires a new idea in the design of cellulose-derived actuators and their application in future intelligent systems.

Novel nerve regeneration assessment method using adult zebrafish with crush spinal cord injury.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio), an alternative to rodents, are widely used in neurological, genetic, and toxicology research. The zebrafish larval spinal cord injury model has been used in neural mechanistic analyses owing to its high regenerative capacity and throughput; however, it also had several limitations in imitating rodents. Therefore, we investigated the use of adult zebrafish as an alternative model to rodents for evaluating nerve regeneration. Here, we established a novel spinal cord regeneration evaluation method, which was based on the maximum swimming speed of adult zebrafish in a custom-built hydrodynamic-based aquarium. The spinal cords of adult male zebrafish were crushed using forceps, and maximum swimming speed and histological spinal cord regeneration were evaluated. Spinal cord-injured zebrafish showed a significant decline in motor function, followed by recovery at 3weeks postoperatively, accompanied by histological regeneration. Spinal cord regeneration can be indirectly assessed by monitoring maximum swimming speed. They were also fed a diet containing fig extract, which can promote peripheral nerve regeneration; they were fed daily starting 1week before the operation. Maximum swimming speed was measured time-dependently until 3weeks postoperatively. Fig-consuming fish showed improved recovery of maximum swimming speed compared to the controls, which was consistent with the histological analysis. In summary, we established a spinal cord regeneration assessment system using adult zebrafish in a customized aquarium, which enables researchers to evaluate spinal cord regeneration in adult zebrafish similar to that of rodent experiments, contributing to faster and easier screening of neuroregenerative technology.

Enhancing Recovery in Fracture Management: An Evidence-Based Approach to Early Mobilization

●Background: Traditionally, fracture management has centered around prolonged immobilization, based on the belief that restricting movement allows bone tissue the stability needed to heal effectively. This approach, while protective, can often lead to complications such as muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and delayed return to function. In recent years, however, early mobilization has emerged as a promising alternative, with the potential to not only speed recovery but also to enhance functional outcomes. ●Aim and Objectives: This study examines the effects of early mobilization on recovery and complications in fracture patients, aiming to identify optimal techniques for varying fracture types and patient demographics. ●Methods: A systematic review and comparative study were conducted, analyzing outcomes across patients managed with early mobilization and those treated with standard immobilization. ●Results: Patients undergoing early mobilization experienced faster recovery times, lower rates of complications, and higher satisfaction scores. Enhanced quality of life and functional recovery were observed, with significant reductions in joint stiffness and muscle loss. ●Conclusion: Early mobilization shows significant benefits in fracture management, particularly when tailored to individual patient needs. Future studies are recommended to explore long-term impacts and protocol optimization.

Cryobiological aspects of upscaling cryopreservation for encapsulated liver cell therapies

For the efficient delivery of a cell therapy a treatment must be provided rapidly, at clinical scale, contain a sufficient active cellular component (biomass), and adhere to a multitude of regulatory requirements. Cryopreservation permits many of these demands to be met more readily. Here we present the cryopreservation and recovery of large volume (2.5L) alginate encapsulated liver cell spheroids (AELS), suitable for use with a novel bioartificial liver device (HepatiCan™) for the treatment of those suffering from acute liver failure (ALF), in regulatory approved cryobags and a cryopreservation process optimised for large volumes. By first assessing the thermal profiles of large scale cryobags with a thermal mimic, the feasibility of cryopreserving a full patient dose simultaneously (3x cryobags containing 833 ml biomass each) was investigated, allowing for small and subsequently large-scale testing of cellular functional recoveries. Work presented here demonstrates that optimised reproducible cooling and warming profiles could be achieved with these large volumes, leading to high biomass recoveries at full clinical scale. The recovered AELS also had high regeneration potential, achieving full pre-freeze viable cell densities within 3 days, indicating that the cell therapy could be delivered rapidly to patients with ALF. This study has presented the feasibility for rapid delivery of large volume cell therapies, whilst further research into improved speed of post-thaw recovery is warranted.

Non-locality and spillover effects of residential flood damage on community recovery: Insights from high-resolution flood claim and mobility data

Examining the relationship between vulnerability of the built environment and community recovery is crucial for understanding disaster resilience. Yet, this relationship is rather neglected in the existing literature due to limitations in the availability of empirical datasets needed for such analysis. In this study, we combined fine-resolution flood damage claim data (composed of both insured and uninsured losses) and human mobility data (composed of millions of movement trajectories) during the 2017 Hurricane Harvey in Harris County, Texas, to specify the extent to which vulnerability of the built environment (i.e., residential flood damage) affects community recovery (based on the speed of human mobility recovery) locally and regionally. We examined such relationship using spatial lag, spatial reach, and spatial decay models to measure the extent of spillover effects of residential flood damage on community recovery. The results indicate that: first, the severity of residential flood damage significantly affects the speed of community recovery. A greater extent of residential flood damage suppresses community recovery not only locally but also in the surrounding areas; second, the spillover effects of residential flood damage on community recovery decay with distance from the highly damaged areas with a spatial reach of up to 31.2 miles (49.92 Km); third, areas display heterogeneous spatial decay coefficients, which are associated with urban form and structure features such as the density of facilities and roads. These findings provide a novel data-driven characterization of the spatial spillover effects of residential flood damage on community recovery and move us closer to a better understanding of complex spatial diffusion processes that shape community resilience to hazards. This study also provides valuable insights for emergency managers and public officials seeking to mitigate the non-local effects of flood damage.

Transition from p-type to n-type semiconductor in V₂O₅ nanowire-based gas sensors: Synthesis and understanding of the sensing mechanism

Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanowires (NWs) were grown via hydrothermal method, followed by annealing treatment at 500 °C in air. Morphological characterization showed that the V2O5 material consists of nanowires with a diameter of 200 nm and an average length of 2.5 μm. The nanowires were used to make an NH3 sensor that operates at room temperature (28 °C) and relative humidity of 40 % RH, giving a relative response of 6.0 % to 500 ppm. The V2O5 nanowires show a change in behavior from p-type semiconductor to n-type semiconductor when the temperature exceeds 50 °C. The maximum response (35 %) was recorded at a working temperature of 200 °C (when the semiconductor behaves as an n-semiconductor) and showed good response and recovery speed over 500 ppm NH3. The performance of the sensor was studied and a sensing mechanism that takes into account the change of majority charge carriers in the semiconductor was hypothesized.

An Analysis of the Investment Value of Marriott International in Post-pandemic Era

Abstract: The COVID-19 has had a negative impact on the global economy, and the hotel industry has also been impacted. In the post-pandemic era, the hotel industry has entered a recovery phase. Taking Marriott, an internationally renowned hotel, as a case study, this paper uses SWOT analysis, financial analysis and relative valuation methods to study the development situation and investment value of the hotel after the epidemic. The analysis shows that Marriott has a fast recovery speed, strong operational capabilities, and obvious competitive advantages, but it is vulnerable to the negative impact of external environmental turbulence on its own revenue. This paper provides investors with a reference to Marriott's post-pandemic financial health, while suggesting areas for improvement for Marriott hotels.

The Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Method on the Life Expectancy of Patients with Various Diseases in Iran: A Literature Review Study

Context: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy method focusing on acceptance and commitment to life values. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ACT method on the life expectancy (LE) of patients with different diseases. Evidence Acquisition: The present study is a literature review that collects findings from past related studies in the last two decades. For this purpose, the essential and common Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms were first identified. Then, the desired MeSH terms were searched in the most reliable and essential international databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and national databases, including Magiran, SID, Iran doc, etc. First, 265 articles were identified, and then 18 were selected as final studies considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The findings of 18 studies were extracted for the present study. Some different types of patients, including those with rheumatoid arthritis, depression, multiple sclerosis, asthma, diabetes, liver transplants, chronic pain, cancer, physical-motor disabilities, drug addiction, and others, were shown to increase LE through the use of the ACT method. The main finding of the present study was that using the ACT method to increase LE in patients with various diseases has a significant effect, which was clearly highlighted in all the selected studies. Conclusions: Based on the findings, ACT is an effective and high-efficiency method in increasing patients' LE. Acceptance and commitment therapy can improve LE, resilience, quality of life, compliance with treatment, and other patient benefits, thus improving the speed of recovery for patients. Therefore, the ACT method, which is a non-pharmacological method, can be used by specialists and clinical psychology experts for different patients.

Shape-Memory Property Acting as a Switch to Change the Surface Property of the Film

Shape-memory polyester films having functional groups were prepared and further grafted onto poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) via atom-transfer radical polymerization. The grafting point of PNIPAAm was controlled by changing the composition of good and poor solvents. In the case of graft polymerization using only good solvents, the film swells, and polymerization proceeds not only from the surface but also from the internal polymerization initiation points. By increasing the proportion of poor solvents, PNIPAAm was grafted onto the surface of the film without swelling. The samples grafted to the interior regions of the film exhibited a decrease in the shape-memory recovery rate and recovery speed, whereas the samples grafted only to the surface of the film exhibited high shape-memory properties. Furthermore, contact-angle measurements revealed that the surface-grafted polymer exhibited changes in surface properties in response to film deformation. Because the deformation of the film is a large change, on the order of several millimeters, the deformation of the manually stretched film was shown to control molecular-level changes on the surface.

Economic Uncertainty and Impact of Governments’ Spending on Economic Growth: An Empirical Study of Emerging Market Economies*

The COVID-19-led economic crisis has rekindled scholarly interest in the relationship between government spending and economic growth. Further, there is an emerging realm of empirical literature that focuses on the dynamics of this relationship during times of uncertainty. Against this backdrop, this study investigates the effect of government expenditure on economic growth during economic uncertainty and the role of economic confidence in the transmission mechanism of policy shocks utilizing a panel generalized method of moments (GMM) framework for 13 select emerging market economies (EMEs). The findings suggest that the beneficial impact of government spending during economic uncertainty is not significantly different from regular times; however, its effectiveness is enhanced during contractionary periods. Government spending, on the other hand, does not have a statistically significant effect during expansionary phases. Furthermore, unanticipated government spending boosts economic confidence, especially during contractionary phases. Governments in EMEs should implement countercyclical fiscal policies selectively to stimulate aggregate demand and facilitate economic recovery, prioritizing targeted spending in confidence-building initiatives and key sectors. Spending in high multiplier sectors during contractionary periods can boost economic activity and speed recovery, fostering stability and growth amidst uncertain economic conditions. Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Urban Emergency Response Resilience During Public Health Crises: A Case Study of Wuhan

In recent years, public health emergencies have severely disrupted city functions and endangered residents’ health and lives, enhancing the emergency response capacity, a crucial aspect of building resilient cities. Based on the Wuhan Statistical Yearbook and local economic and social big data, this study constructed a resilience assessment system that covers resistance, adaptability, and resilience. Evaluate the resilience level of each region and analyze its spatiotemporal characteristics using the entropy weight method, Theil index, and natural breakpoint method. The central area exhibited higher resilience levels, while peripheral areas showed lower resilience, owing to location advantage and developmental disparities. The obstacle degree model revealed that scientific and technological innovation, social rescue capabilities, and population size are the primary weak links in building urban emergency response capacity. Based on these findings, this study aims to provide policy recommendations and improvement measures for multiple stakeholders, guide the construction of resilient cities, enhance the ability to respond to public health crises and recovery speed, and ensure urban functions and residents’ well-being.

Alteplase vs. Tenecteplase: An In-depth Analysis of Their Relative Effectiveness in Treating Acute Ischaemic Stroke.

Dear Editor, Stroke stands as the second-leading cause of death worldwide [1, 2]. Each year, over 12 million individuals are impacted by stroke, resulting in approximately 6.5 million fatalities [1]. Stroke globally ranks as the third-leading factor causing a combination of death and disability [2]. Every year, around seven hundred thousand individuals in the United States undergo an Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS), making up 85% of all stroke cases [2]. New treatments like intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy have cut mortality by 10% compared to older methods, enhancing long-term disability prevention rates following Acute Ischemic Stroke [2]. Alteplase is the sole FDA-approved thrombolytic drug in AIS within the first 4.5 hours. Despite its potential for disability-free recovery, its usage is constrained by a brief time window and adverse effects, notably a 6% risk of symptomatic bleeding. In addition, its fibrinolytic efficacy is limited, achieving vascular reopening in less than half of the patients, and can cause cytotoxicity to the already hypoxic brain with resultant cerebral edema [2]. Tenecteplase (TNK), a modified variant of alteplase, has improved features including greater fibrin selectivity and longer half-life and is given as a single bolus instead of an infusion, thanks to genetic recombinant technology [3]. Numerous studies have supported TNK's efficacy over alteplase in treating AIS. In 2016, Bruce C.V. Campbell and colleagues demonstrated that, according to the analysis of modified Rankin scale scores, tenecteplase exhibited a more favorable overall functional outcome compared to alteplase [4]. A dosage of 0.25 mg/kg of tenecteplase emerges as a promising alternative to replace alteplase as the preferred treatment for patients with AIS occurring within 4.5 hours due to TNK's superior early neurological recovery rates and comparable safety outcomes [3]. Despite gathering evidence from experimental trials indicating TNK's advantages over alteplase for AIS, the use of TNK at a dosage of 0.4 mg/kg appears to pose safety concerns when compared to alteplase [3]. Bruce C.V. Campbell and his fellow researchers revealed in their study that in spite of the beneficial effects of TNK relative to alteplase, there was no significant variation in the speed of recovery to independent function. Resilience assessment and recovery of airport departure flights under severe weather

In order to ensure the overall performance of the airport under severe weather, scientifically evaluate the resilience of the airport's flight operations, improve flight recovery capabilities, and alleviate the impact of severe weather effectively. This article first gives the definition of airport departure flight operation. Starting from the performance of the airport departure flight operation system, it analyzes flight departure delay time, total departure delay time, departure flight normality rate and departure airport flight operation system comprehensive resilience index four indicators to evaluate the resilience changes of the system under severe weather conditions; put forward the concept of the performance recovery strategy of the airport departure flight operation system, and established the corresponding resilience model, and used the genetic algorithm to optimize the sequence of the delayed departure flights; finally, take the "721" heavy rain event in Beijing Capital International Airport in 2012 as an example to analyze the data, obtain the performance index and resilience index of the Capital Airport under the influence of heavy rain, and use the optimized departure flight schedule to compare and analyze the changes in airport departure flight operating system performance and resilience level. The results indicate that: under the influence of heavy rain, the comprehensive resilience index of the airport departure flight operation system decreased from 0.4573 to 0.0628 , and increased to 0.2223 after the rainstorm decreased; after the flight optimization and sequencing was carried out in the recovery stage of the airport departure flight operation performance, the total number of departure flights decreased. The delay time is reduced by 24.85%, the airport performance recovery speed is increased by 13.89%after optimization, and the minimum resilience index of the optimized airport departure flight operation system is increased by 13.38%, and under the same heavy rain, the system performance is given priority to restore to the initial state, indicating that the evaluation Indicators are valid.

A Wind Tunnel Test for the Effect of Seed Tree Arrangement on Wake Wind Speed

Changes in canopy structures caused by harvesting and regeneration practices can significantly alter the wind environment. Therefore, it is essential to understand the wind patterns influenced by seed tree arrangements for predicting seed dispersal by winds and ensuring the success of natural regeneration. This study aimed to identify how wind speed responds to seed tree arrangement designs with differing horizontal distances, vertical positions, and free-stream wind speeds. A wind tunnel test was conducted using pine saplings for a scale model of various seed tree arrangements, and the change in wake speed was tracked. The wake’s relative wind speed averaged 71%, ranging from 3.5% to 108.5%, depending on the seed tree arrangement, distance from saplings, and vertical position. It peaked within the patch of three seed trees compared to other arrangements and at the top canopy layer. The empirical function effectively described the wind speed reduction and recovery with distance from saplings. For instance, the minimum wind speed was reached at 0.6–2.2 times the canopy height, and a wind speed reduction of over 20% of the free-stream wind speed was maintained at a 1.6–7.6 canopy height. A negative relationship between the seed tree leaf area and the relative wind speed was observed only at the top canopy layer. This study presents empirical evidence on the patterns of wake winds induced by different types of heterogeneous canopy structures.

The number of thyroid surgeries is increasing annually. The choice of anesthetic approach influences the speed and quality of postoperative recovery and determines the risk of complications. This review presents data from clinical studies and meta-analyses regarding the impact of various anesthesia methods in thyroid surgery on surgical stress response, hormonal status, and complication risk. The results of the review indicate that the use of regional anesthesia techniques contributes to a reduction in the intensity of postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, and the incidence of chronic postoperative pain syndrome. Incorporating regional anesthesia techniques into enhanced recovery after surgery protocols for thyroid surgery helps reduce hospital stay duration and treatment costs. A well-studied, simple, and safe technique is the superficial cervical plexus block, while the intermediate cervical plexus block is less studied but considered safe. The deep cervical plexus block is associated with a higher risk of serious complications. Advancements in ultrasound technology in anesthesia have enabled the use of previously inaccessible regional techniques. Potentially beneficial methods for thyroid surgery include pericapsular block and Berry's ligament block. Further research is required to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these methods.
