Guest Editorial The 2018 IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications Special Section

The IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurement and Applications—MeMeA 2018, which took place in Rome, Italy, on June 11–13, 2018, was a real and concrete opportunity for presenting recent developments in measurement and instrumentation related to medicine. The 13th edition of the Symposium concretely promoted discussion on electrical, chemical, and physiological sensors and measurement systems, which delivers trustable measurement data for prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of different diseases. Other aspects related to the measurement sciences were also presented during the event, such as biosignal processing, quality control of medical devices, medical instrumentation uncertainty/calibration, e-health technologies, wearable devices, and biomechanics/rehabilitation systems.

103Rh NMR spectroscopy and its application to rhodium chemistry.

Rhodium is used for a number of large processes that rely on homogeneous rhodium-catalyzed reactions, for instance rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkenes, carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid and hydrodesulfurization of thiophene derivatives (in crude oil). Many laboratory applications in organometallic chemistry and catalysis involve organorhodium chemistry and a wealth of rhodium coordination compounds is known. For these and other areas, 103Rh NMR spectroscopy appears to be a very useful analytical tool. In this review, most of the literature concerning 103Rh NMR spectroscopy published from 1989 up to and including 2003 has been covered. After an introduction to several experimental methods for the detection of the insensitive 103Rh nucleus, a discussion of factors affecting the transition metal chemical shift is given. Computational aspects and calculations of chemical shifts are also briefly addressed. Next, the application of 103Rh NMR in coordination and organometallic chemistry is elaborated in more detail by highlighting recent developments in measurement and interpretation of 103Rh NMR data, in relation to rhodium-assisted reactions and homogeneous catalysis. The dependence of the 103Rh chemical shift on the ligands at rhodium in the first coordination sphere, on the complex geometry, oxidation state, temperature, solvent and concentration is treated. Several classes of compounds and special cases such as chiral rhodium compounds are reviewed. Finally, a section on scalar coupling to rhodium is provided.

Neuroimaging: Clinical Applications

Imaging of the structure and function of the human brain has grown to an area with increasing impact on neuropsychological research as well as on the routine clinical evaluation of brain damaged patients. The scientific and popular literature is now flooded by increasingly more spectacular pictures of the brain. The images no longer only illustrate what is well known from earlier research but they do also sometimes provide information of importance for the further development of neuropsychological theories. The two volumes edited by Erin D. Bigler, Neuroimaging I and II, offer a possibility for neuropsychologists and other interested readers to get acquainted with the more recent developments in measurement technology and applications in basic science (Volume I) as well as in the clinic (Volume II). The authors of the 24 chapters are generally outstanding researchers, with impressive expertise within their fields of specialization.

Recent Developments in Measurement and Possible Applications to the Measurement of Psychomotor Behavior

Abstract The relatively recent development and successful implementation of item response theory, or IRT for the solutions to measurement problems in the cognitive and affective behavior domains should provide the incentive for physical educators to begin to apply IRT procedures to mental test data and opinion or attitude measurements in the near future. IRT offers distinct advantages to the measurement of these behaviors that the more traditional, classical procedures either cannot provide or cannot provide easily. The primary advantage of IRT procedures is to be able to obtain an estimate of the examinee's true but unknown ability (i.e., the latent trait of interest) and to estimate this ability in such a way that this estimate does not depend on other examinees or on the particular test administered. Recent Developments in Measurement and Possible Applications to the Measurement of Psychomotor Behavior: A Response

Abstract The possible utilization of item response theory (IRT) and adaptive testing in psychomotor situations leads to a number of interesting suppositions. The question of test validity is crucial and the application of those procedures could help enhance the quality and generalizability of research results. Examination of the results of several previous studies indicates that adaptive testing may be easily applied in a number of psychomotor problems. The application of IRT will depend upon the type of model chosen. Various models are considered from a heuristic standpoint with the binomial model being the most logically suitable approach. The continuous response model needs to be examined more thoroughly. The combination of selected IRT models with other approaches such as sequential probability testing and trials-to-criterion testing was discussed. The use of validity generalization was suggested. The conference at the National Physical Laboratory covered the subject under the general headings: current requirements for accuracy, new developments in vacuum gauges, the measurement of partial pressures, recent developments in measurement below and adjacent to atmospheric pressure, modern trends in gauge calibration and, finally, physical applications (to sorption phenomena, vapour pressure measurements, space research, etc.). A number of invited papers, some reviewing selected topics, as well as submitted contributions were presented and discussed. This report considers the various papers and their discussion, broadly grouped, and indicates some of the main points made during the conference. For convenience, references are also given to related published work on the various topics mentioned, and a complete list of all the 38 papers given at the conference is appended.
