Recent Advances in Ionic Liquids—MOF Hybrid Electrolytes for Solid-State Electrolyte of Lithium Battery

Li-ion batteries are currently considered promising energy storage devices for the future. However, the use of liquid electrolytes poses certain challenges, including lithium dendrite penetration and flammable liquid leakage. Encouragingly, solid electrolytes endowed with high stability and safety appear to be a potential solution to these problems. Among them, ionic liquids (ILs) packed in metal organic frameworks (MOFs), known as ILs@MOFs, have emerged as a hybrid solid-state material that possesses high conductivity, low flammability, and strong mechanical stability. ILs@MOFs plays a crucial role in forming a continuous interfacial conduction network, as well as providing internal ion conduction pathways through the ionic liquid. Hence, ILs@MOFs can not only act as a suitable ionic conduct main body, but also be used as an active filler in composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) to meet the demand for higher conductivity and lower cost. This review focuses on the characteristic properties and the ion transport mechanism behind ILs@MOFs, highlighting the main problems of its applications. Moreover, this review presents an introduction of the advantages and applications of Ils@MOFs as fillers and the improvement directions are also discussed. In the conclusion, the challenges and suggestions for the future improvement of ILs@MOFs hybrid electrolytes are also prospected. Overall, this review demonstrates the application potential of ILs@MOFs as a hybrid electrolyte material in energy storage systems.

Thermo- and Photocatalytic Activation of CO2 in Ionic Liquids Nano-domains.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered to be potential material devices for CO2 capturing and conversion to energy-adducts. They form a cage (confined-space) around the catalyst providing an ionic nano-container environment which serves as physical-chemical barrier that selectively controls the diffusion of reactants, intermediates, and products to the catalytic active sites via their hydrophobicity and contact ion pairs. Hence, the electronic properties of the catalysts in ILs can be tuned by the proper choice of the IL-cations and anions that strongly influence the residence time/diffusion of the reactants, intermediates, and products in the nano-environment. On the other hand, ILs provide driving force towards photocatalytic redox process to increase the CO2 photoreduction. By combining ILs with the semiconductor, unique solid semiconductor-liquid commodities are generated that can lower the CO2 activation energy barrier by modulating the electronic properties of the semiconductor surface. This mini-review provides a brief overview of the recent advances in IL assisted thermal conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbons, formic acid, methanol, dimethyl carbonate, and cyclic carbonates as well as its photo-conversion to solar fuels.

Recent Advances in Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Graphene: Catalytic Application and Environmental Remediation.

Applications of ionic liquids (ILs) for the modification physicochemical properties of porous materials have been extensively studied with respect to various applications based on the understanding and development of properties of ILs. In this review, IL–graphene composites are discussed and provided a perspective of composites of IL. IL has been used as a medium to improve the dispersibility of graphene, and the resulting composite material shows excellent performance in gas separation and catalysis during environmental treatment. The applications of ILs and IL–functionalized graphene are discussed in detail with the actual environmental issues, and the main challenges and opportunities for possible future applications are summarized.

A review of recent advances of ionic liquids as lubricants for tribological and thermal applications

The novel characteristics of ionic liquids (ILs) led to an improved tribological and thermal performance. This article discusses current progress in developing ILs as neat lubricants or additives in lube oils, with a focus on ILs chemistry, synthesis, miscibility, and other relevant rheological, thermal, and tribological properties at macro to nanoscales. This article also introduces a review of lubrication mechanisms based on the tribofilm formed on the rubbing interfaces owing to tribochemical reactions among the ILs, base oil, and solid bodies, which shows key insights into anti-wear properties. ILs exhibited superior anti-wear properties compared to fully formulated oils. Notably, there was no symmetry between the friction results of ILs and their wear counterpart. Furthermore, the main challenges to further improve ILs performance for tribological applications are highlighted. Eventually, prospects for ILs tribology are suggested, which will guide the development and synthesis of ILs-based lubricants for tribological applications.

Recent Advances in Ionic Liquids in Biomedicine.

The use of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents in biomedical applications has grown dramatically in recent years due to their unique properties and their inherent tunability. This review will introduce ionic liquids and deep eutectics and discuss their biomedical applications, namely solubilization of drugs, creation of active pharmaceutical ingredients, delivery of pharmaceuticals through biological barriers, stabilization of proteins and other nucleic acids, antibacterial agents, and development of new biosensors. Current challenges and future outlooks are discussed, including biocompatibility, the potential impact of the presence of impurities, and the importance of understanding the microscopic interactions in ionic liquids in order to design task‐specific solvents.

Recent advances in ionic liquids and nanotechnology for drug delivery.

In drug discovery and drug development, it is estimated that around40% of commercialized and 90% of under-study drugs have inadequate pharmaceutical properties, severely impairing its therapeutic efficacy. Thus, there is a strong demand to find strategies to enhance the delivery of such drugs. Ionic liquids are a novel class of liquids composed of a combination of organic salts that are of particular interest alone or in combination with drug delivery systems. This review is focused on the recent effortsusing ionic liquids in drug solubility, formulation and drug delivery with specific emphasis on nanotechnology. The latest developments using hybrid delivery systems obtained upon the combination of drug delivery systems and ionic liquids will also be addressed.

Recent advances of ionic liquids in separation science and mass spectrometry

Ionic liquids (ILs) have drawn considerable interest for their use in various analytical techniques including chromatography, extractions, and mass spectrometry. This is largely due to the flexibility in tuning the physicochemical properties of ILs. There has been a significant increase in the number of publications over the last decade in which ILs have been employed as a chromatographic stationary phase, extraction solvent, or sorbent material in various preconcentration techniques. This review article highlights the recent advancements in the use of ILs in separation science including gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, extraction and microextraction techniques as well as mass spectrometry.

Recent Advances in Ionic Liquids for Synthesis of Inorganic Nanomaterials

Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts of low melting points with a wide range of liquidus temperature and intrinsically useful characteristics of negligible vapour pressure, thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and a large electrochemical window. As a green recyclable alternative to traditional organic solvents, the ILs have shown promise in the liquid/liquid extraction of organics from water and metal ions from solution, and separating isomeric organic compounds, selective catalytic processes for organic chemical reactions and solar cells and other electrochemical devices. In recent years, the advantages of the ILs in inorganic nanomaterial synthetic procedures have been realized and received more and more attention. In this brief review, the latest developments regarding the use of the IL as reaction medium for inorganic nanomaterials are outlined, mainly focused on (1) the preorganized structure of the IL as template effect for porous inorganic nanomaterials and (2) the intrinsic high charge and polarizability of the IL to create electrostatic and steric stabilization for metal nanoparticles and to favor phase transfer of the nanoparticles from water to water-immiscible solvent.
