Similarity Detection of Time-Sensitive Online News Articles Based on RSS Feeds and Contextual Data

This article tackles the problem of finding similarity between web time-sensitive news articles, which can be a challenge. This challenge was approached with a novel methodology that uses supervised learning algorithms with carefully selected features (Semantic, Lexical and Temporal features (content and contextual features)). The proposed approach considers not only the textual content, which is a well-studied approach that may yield misleading results, but also the context, community engagement, and community-deduced importance of that news article. This paper details the major procedures of title pair pre-processing, analysis of lexical units, feature engineering, and similarity measures. Thousands of web articles are being published every second, and therefore, it is essential to determine the similarity of these articles efficiently without wasting time on unnecessary text processing of the bodies. Hence, the proposed approach focuses on short contents (titles) and context. The conducted experiment showed high precision and accuracy on a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) dataset of 8000 Arabic news article pairs collected automatically from 10 different news sources. The proposed approach achieved an accuracy of 0.81. Contextual features increased the accuracy and the precision. The proposed algorithm achieved a 0.89 correlation with the evaluations of two human judges based on Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. The results outperform the state-of-the-art systems on Arabic news articles.

Randomized Controlled Trial of RSS Reader Use and Resident Familiarity With Primary Literature.

Awareness of the primary literature is important for clinicians. Lack of time, poor access to information, and lack of personal initiative may be barriers for some trainees. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) readers aggregate web content, such as journal abstracts, in a single location for easy viewing. We assessed whether use of an RSS reader would increase resident reading frequency, familiarity, and understanding of the primary literature. We conducted a single-center, prospective, randomized, nonblinded, controlled trial of the effect of RSS reader use on knowledge of recent literature among pediatrics residents. Residents were randomly assigned to the RSS group (education in RSS use and receipt of the Pediatrics RSS feed) or a control group that followed standard reading practices. Outcome measures were differences on baseline and monthly surveys of reading frequency, familiarity with recent publications, and knowledge of recent articles (familiarity validation). Of 144 eligible residents, 79 (55%) were enrolled in the survey, with 81% (64 of 79) of participants completing all surveys. The RSS reader use was correlated with greater familiarity with selected articles, but not with improved understanding (as measured by ability to answer multiple-choice questions about content). Participants reported satisfaction with the RSS reader based on its ease of use, accessibility, and as an aid in supplementing reading. The RSS reader use was accepted by residents and associated with increased familiarity with the primary literature but not with increased understanding.

Interactive Design Recommendation Using Sensor Based Smart Wear and Weather WebBot

Analysis of a customer's sensibility preferences is an important strategy in a market that is becoming increasingly more customer-oriented. In this paper, the interactive design recommendation using the sensor based smart wear and the weather WebBot (DRS-WB) is proposed. The proposed method is increasing the efficiency of merchandising for human-oriented sensibility product designs. Development of the DRS-WB included a user interface and collaborative filtering of textile and fashion designs to satisfy the user's needs. Collaborative filtering is used to recommend designs of interest for users based on predictive relationships discovered between the current user and other previous users. Current weather information is simultaneously acquired from the sensor based smart wear and the weather WebBot. The sensor based smart wear is fabricated as a way of non-tight and comfortable style fitting for the curves of the human body based on clothes to wear in daily life. The design sample of the smart wear uses basic stretch materials and is designed to sustain its wearable property. The weather WebBot uses a database of weather forecast information extracted from the Web pages and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed of the Korea Meteorological Administration and collects information from the various links off the main URL. Information is stored in a database using XML query for collecting effective weather data and processed as a form of XML through extracting and exchanging the information. These signals are then transmitted to the connected DRS-WB. This information can be easily monitored in real time. Textile designs and fashion designs were incorporated into the survey. Pictures of fashion design details such as collar type, sleeve type, skirt type, skirt length, and color tone were evaluated in terms of sensibility. Finally, this paper suggests empirical applications to verify the adequacy and validity of this system.

최근 초고층 및 초장대와 같은 대형 구조물들이 시공되고 있으며, 이에 대한 구조물 건전성 모니터링 기술들이 연구되고 있다. 하지만 기존의 기술들은 계측 센서의 관리와 센서로부터 계측된 데이터에 효율적으로 access하지 못하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 구조물 건전성 모니터링을 위한 증강현실 기반 센서 위치인식 및 데이터 시각화 기술을 소개한다. 모바일 디바이스에 내장된 GPS를 통하여 센서와 사용자 간의 거리를 파악하게 된다. 뿐만 아니라, 센서로부터 계측된 데이터는 위치정보시스템 서버에 저장되며, RSS방식을 통해 전송되어 사용자가 모바일 디바이스를 통해 쉽게 계측 데이터를 가시화 할 수 있게 된다. 이 기술을 이용하여 사용자는 센서의 위치인식을 통해 계측센서를 관리하고, 계측 데이터를 시각화하여 시간과 공간에 제약 없이 구조물의 건전성을 모니터링 할 수 있게 된다. In recent years, numerous mega-size and complex civil infrastructures have been constructed worldwide. For the more precise construction and maintenance process management of these civil infrastructures, the application of a variety of smart sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is required. The efficient management of both sensors and collected databases is also very important. Recently, several kinds of database access technologies using Quick Response (QR) code and Augmented Reality (AR) applications have been developed. These technologies provide software tools incorporated with mobile devices, such as smart phone, tablet PC and smart pad systems, so that databases can be accessed very quickly and easily. In this paper, an AR-based structural health monitoring technique is suggested for sensor management and the efficient access of databases collected from sensor networks that are distributed at target structures. The global positioning system (GPS) in mobile devices simultaneously recognizes the user location and sensor location, and calculates the distance between the two locations. In addition, the processed health monitoring results are sent from a main server to the user's mobile device, via the RSS (really simple syndication) feed format. It can be confirmed that the AR-based structural health monitoring technique is very useful for the real-time construction process management of numerous mega-size and complex civil infrastructures.

Analysis of Content Legibility for Smartphones of Websites of the Korean Urological Association and Other Urological Societies in Korea

PurposeWe performed an analysis of the smartphone legibility of the websites of the Korean Urological Association (KUA) and other urological societies.Materials and MethodsThis study was conducted on the websites of the KUA and nine other urological societies. Each website was accessed via iPhone Safari and Android Chrome, respectively, to evaluate the establishment and readability of the mobile web pages. The provision of Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds by the websites and whether the websites had Twitter and Facebook accounts were evaluated. In addition, a validation test on the web standards was performed by using the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C®) Markup Validation Service, and subsequently the numbers of errors and warnings that occurred were analyzed.ResultsWhen accessed via Safari, two websites were legible, four were somewhat legible, and four were somewhat illegible. When accessed via Chrome, two websites were legible, six were somewhat legible, and two were somewhat illegible. One website provided an RSS feed and two websites managed members via separate Twitter accounts. No website supported mobile web pages. The result of the W3C® Markup Validation test on 10 websites showed a mean error rate of 221.6 (range, 13-1,477) and a mean warning rate of 127.13 (range, 0-655).ConclusionsThe smartphone legibility level of the websites of urological societies was relatively low. Improved smartphone legibility and web standard compliance of the websites of urological societies are required to keep up with the popularity of smartphones.

Receiving: The Use of Web 2.0 to Create a Dynamic Learning Forum to Enrich Resident Education

Receiving (http://www.drhem.com) is a powerful web‐based tool that encompasses web 2.0 technologies. “Web 2.0” is a term used to describe a group of loosely related network technologies that share a user‐focused approach to design and functionality. It has a strong bias towards user content creation, syndication, and collaboration (McGee 2008). The use of Web 2.0 technology is rapidly being integrated into undergraduate and graduate education, which dramatically influences the ways learners approach and use information (Sandars 2007). Knowledge transfer has become a two‐way process. Users no longer simply consume and download information from the web; they create and interact with it. We created this blog to facilitate resident education, communication, and productivity. Using simple, freely available blog software (Wordpress.com), this inter‐disciplinary web‐based forum integrates faculty‐created, case‐based learning modules with critical essays and articles related to the practice of emergency medicine (EM). Didactic topics are based on the EM model and include multi‐media case presentations. The educational modules include a visual diagnosis section (VizD), United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) board‐style cases (quizzER), radiographic interpretation (radER), electrocardiogram interpretation (Tracings), and ultrasound image and video clip interpretation (Morrison's Pouch). After viewing each case, residents can submit their answers to the questions asked in each scenario. At the end of each week, a faculty member posts the answer and facilitates an online discussion of the case. A “Top 10 Leader Board” is updated weekly to reflect resident participation and display a running tally of correct answers submitted by the residents. Feedback by the residents has been very positive. In addition to the weekly interactive cases, Receiving also includes critical essays and articles on an array of topics related to EM. For example, “Law and Medicine” is a monthly essay written by an emergency physician who is also a lawyer. This module explores legal issues related to EM. “The Meeting Room” presents interviews with leading scholars in the field. “Got Public Health?”, written by a resident, addresses relevant social, cultural, and political issues commonly encountered in the emergency department. “Mini Me” is dedicated to pediatric pearls and is overseen by a pediatric emergency physician. “Sherwin's Critical Care” focuses on critical care principles relevant to EM and is overseen by a faculty member. As in the didactic portion of the website, residents and faculty members are encouraged to comment on these essays and articles, offering their own expertise and interpretation on the various topics. Receiving is updated weekly. Every post has its own URL and tags allowing for quick and easy searchability and archiving. Users can search for various topics by using a built‐in search feature. Receiving is linked to an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed, allowing users to get the latest information without having to continually check the website for updates. Residents have access to the website anytime and anywhere that the internet is available (e.g., home computer, hospital computer, Iphone™, BlackBerry™), bringing the classroom to them.This unique blend of topics and the ability to create a virtual interactive community creates a dynamic learning environment and directly enhances resident education. Receiving serves as a core educational tool for our residency, presenting interesting and relevant EM information in a collaborative and instructional environment.

ABSTRACT Really Simple Syndication (RSS) uses extensive markup language (XML) to constantly scan the content of Web sites for updates, which will then be delivered to subscribers' desktops or mobile devices through an RSS feed. RSS helps professionals stay current while reducing workloads. Librarians need to get familiar with RSS to educate their users, to stay current in information technology, and to generate and disseminate selected information to target user groups.

Using RSS to Publish Library News and Information

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an emerging technology for providing news to the patron. Providing an RSS feed is relatively simple and consists of client-side and server-side software; in many cases, this only involves minor alterations to existing software. As an alternative, various services provide entirely Web-based RSS services. At a deeper level, RSS markups consist of metadata with the possibility of passive information integration leading to the Semantic Web.

Online Sources of Organic Data

In the March 2005 issue of JCE, I read the article concerning the JCE ChemInfo: Organic Web portal that is currently being developed. In the article, Hans Reich mentioned that this new site was being developed to provide direct links to high quality data (pKa values, acronyms, A-values, named reagents, etc.) that organic chemists would likely prefer to have at their fingertips (via two-click access). I believe another important Web resource for organic information is the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry’s Web site. This site is a portal that chemists and others can use to find information relevant to organic chemistry. The main page of the site serves as a bulletin board to announce major meetings and provides basic information on them (such as registration deadlines and abstract submission directions). It also lists information on the availability of and winners of awards provided to graduate students and others. Furthermore, separate pages on the site are provided to give rapid access to electronic copies of journal articles, links to high quality organic resource sites, and free advertisements by professors and companies seeking to employ organic chemists as postdoctoral researchers or scientists. Each page of the Organic Division’s site also links directly to Matt McIntosh’s excellent site listing graduate organic research groups in the U.S., including those seeking open postdoctoral positions, and any academic institution with an open faculty position.Recently, it became apparent to me that the Organic Division’s Web site has lacked a comprehensive readily available listing of various tables of high quality data that researchers, students, and others can use as a reference source—a resource that Reich has been working diligently to provide over the past several years, and one that JCE Online hopes to provide as well. While I had questioned the necessity to start another organic chemistry Web portal, Reich rightly pointed out that the problem with the Web is not too many links, but the necessity to provide accurate comprehensive (useful) tables of data. (For example, several sites list named reactions, but none of the sites are comprehensive in their listings of the reactions.) In any event, each page of the Organic Division’s Web site now includes a link to Reich’s organic data site in the sidebar via the link labeled “Organic Data Tables”.Also of note, an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed for the Organic Division’s Web site was recently created. Now, people can access the most recent Division news headlines via their favorite RSS reader (like the Yahoo Web portal). It is anticipated that RSS will develop into a fundamental technology that people will use to get the most important updates for the information that they personally select in a way that they want to receive it. For example, CNN has separate RSS feeds for national news, world news, financial news, and technology news.The ACS Division of Organic Chemistry’s Web site is intended to serve the members of the organic community. Thus, you are encouraged to send announcements of interest to the organic community (such as meetings, calls for nomination of awards, announcements of major awards won), suggestions, and any comments.
