Situational Awareness Errors in Forklift Logistics Operations: A Multiphase Eye-Tracking and Think-Aloud Approach

Background: This study explores forklift operators’ situational awareness (SA) and human errors in logistic operations using a multiphase approach as an innovative methodology. Methods: Ethnography, eye tracking, error taxonomy, and retrospective think-aloud (RTA) were used to study the diverse cognitive, behavioral, and operational aspects affecting SA. After analyzing 566 events across 18 tasks, this research highlighted eye tracking’s potential by offering real-time insights into operator behavior and RTA’s potential as a method for cross-checking the causal factors underlying errors. Results: Critical tasks, like positioning forklifts and lowering pallets, significantly impact incident occurrence, while high-cognitive demand tasks, such as hoisting and identifying pedestrians/obstacles, reduce SA and increase errors. Driving tasks are particularly vulnerable to errors and are the most affected by operator risk generators (ORGs), representing 42% of incident risk events. This study identifies driving, hoisting, and lowering loads as the tasks most influenced by system factors. Limitations include the task difficulty levels, managing physical risk, and training. Future research is suggested in autonomous industrial vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs). Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into how we may improve safety in logistics operations by proposing a multiphase methodology to uncover the patterns of attention, perception, and cognitive errors and their impact on decision-making.

Evolution of mechanical behavior in granular soil during fine particle loss simulated by salt dissolution: Insights from ring shear tests

Fine particle loss in soil is one of the main causes of slope instability and geotechnical structure failure. Loss of fines can cause instability in granular assembles by changing the fabric and microstructure of the sample. However, real-time monitoring of the evolution of mechanical behavior in granular soils during the particle loss process is still poorly explored. This study presents a novel approach by simulating fine particle loss through salt dissolution in ring-shear tests, offering real-time insights into the mechanical evolution of granular soils under realistic stress conditions. Meanwhile, the shear resistance, shear displacement, vertical displacement, salt content, and acoustic emissions were simultaneously recorded. The test results showed that the instability of the sample was triggered by the loss of fine particles. With a gradual loss of fine particles, both the vertical and shear deformations and the void ratio increased. The evolution of shear resistance in the sample can be divided into three stages: stress weakening, then strengthening, and finally recovery to the initial value. We infer that the evolution of shear resistance originated from the collapse and rearrangement of its granular fabric and microstructure. Additional evidence for this hypothesis was provided by high-frequency acoustic emissions (approximately 150 kHz), suggesting buckling of the force chains accompanying the particle loss process. Furthermore, the sample experienced greater shear deformations and stress weakening that developed under a larger initial fine content or a higher normal stress. This finding may provide valuable insights into the mechanical behavior of granular soil during the fine particle loss process.

Revolutionizing Knowledge Management in Transportation Agencies: The Role of Generative AI and Scalable Frameworks

The increased interconnectedness of the globe has led to a fast-paced expansion of transportation systems and, consequently, to the creation of effective Knowledge Management Strategies. By simply put, the ways of decision making, operations management, and solving problems related to the complex infrastructure systems have all improved. Knowledge management is made easier by the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) which enables all the processes of data generation, data synthesis and even gives room for a real-time insight within a transport department. There is also the availability of Structure and Generative Theory which allows agencies to cope with needs that keep changing without losing the quality and the speed of the flow of the knowledge. In this sense, the present contribution focuses on the perspective of generative AI and structural frameworks in transportation agencies understanding knowledge management and its future prospects in terms of technology usefulness (Chen & Li, 2021). In these external environments, transportation agencies manage vast and complex datasets that change rapidly and are often dispersed. For instance, Generative AI has applications in natural language processing, predictive analytics and intelligent reporting, which assist agencies in solving hurdles posed by conventional knowledge management. When these AI systems are given, scalable frameworks guarantee that the knowledge management systems will address the challenges that come with increased complexity in operations. This research examines how generative artificial intelligence can be applied in various knowledge management situations, with particular focus on how it can be used to deal with mundane processes, enhance responses and help to mitigate problems in the field of transportation (Nguyen et al., 2023). The results underscore the possible benefits of using generative AI within efficient KM systems, such as lower costs, better accuracy, and improved accessibility to the users. On the other hand, the concerns such as data quality, costs of implementation, and other factors like the presence of easy to use interface for non-technical personnel, are also brought up by the authors. These perspectives will be useful for transportation agencies that seek to transform their KM activities. Overcoming these obstacles, generative AI and scalable frameworks can promote radical transformation and development of dynamic and sustainable knowledge systems that meet the needs of transport management in the case of Rahman and Smith, 2023.

From Firestick to Satellites: Technological Advancement and Indigenous Cultural Practice in Managing Forest Fires in Australia

ABSTRACT Australia’s interaction with forest fires highlights the interplay of geography, climate, and ecosystems. This research explores the evolution of fire management practices, from ancient Indigenous ‘firestick farming’ to modern strategies using remote sensing and predictive modelling. For millennia, Indigenous Australians used controlled burns to manage landscapes, promoting ecological health and reducing wildfire risks. The disruption of these practices by European settlers in the late 18th century, through land clearing and the introduction of non-native species, led to increased fuel loads and more severe wildfires. The 20th century brought significant technological advancements to fire management, including motorised fire trucks, aircraft, and improved communication systems. However, the real revolution came with the introduction of remote sensing and early warning systems. These technologies enabled real-time monitoring and predictive insights, significantly enhancing fire management. Today, predictive modelling and machine learning further improve fire management by enabling precise forecasting and efficient resource allocation. This research underscores the crucial role of integrating Indigenous knowledge and community engagement with modern strategies for sustainable fire management. As climate change increases wildfire risks, adapting to these challenges is more important than ever. Australia’s approach, which blends traditional wisdom with modern science, serves as a global model for effective wildfire management.

Revisioning Healthcare Interoperability System for ABI Architectures: Introspection and Improvements

The integration of systems for Adaptive Business Intelligence (ABI) in the healthcare industry has the potential to revolutionize and reform the way organizations approach data analysis and decision-making. By providing real-time actionable insights and enabling organizations to continuously adapt and evolve, ABI has the potential to drive better outcomes, reduce costs, and improve the overall quality of patient care. The ABI Interoperability System was designed to facilitate the usage and integration of ABI systems in healthcare environments through interoperability resources like Health Level 7 (HL7) or Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR). The present article briefly describes both versions of this software, learning about their differences and improvements, and how they affect the solution. The changes introduced in the new version of the system will tackle code quality with automated tests, development workflow, and developer experience, with the introduction of Continuous Integration and Delivery pipelines in the development workflow, new support for the FHIR pattern, and address a few security concerns about the architecture. The second revision of the system features a more refined, modern, and secure architecture and has proven to be more performant and efficient than its predecessor. As it stands, the Interoperability System poses a significant step forward toward interoperability and ease of integration in the healthcare ecosystem.

Monitoring partially observed average kiloelectron-volt emissions using exponentially weighted moving average chart

The average lifespan of particles is a key parameter in nuclear physics, critical for identifying different particle types. Modern particle detectors are highly effective at detecting the arrival of individual radioactive nuclei and observing their decay events. However, challenges arise when matching arrivals with departures, especially when departures are only partially observed. One inefficient approach involves conducting experiments with very low arrival rates to facilitate matching. The kiloelectron-volt E(keV) emission is obtained during this radioactive process. We propose a Modified Distance Weighted Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MDE) control chart for monitoring kiloelectron-volt E(keV) data. Control charts are vital in quality control, offering real-time insights into process stability by distinguishing between normal (common-cause) and unusual (special-cause) variations. This capability enables precise decision-making, showing when a process is within control or requires intervention, thus preventing unnecessary adjustments and costly errors. By highlighting trends and shifts, control charts foster continuous improvement, identifying areas where processes can be optimized. The proposed control chart is developed for Weibull lifetimes under type-I censoring. For constructing an efficient control charting structure, we employed the conditional median (CM) methods. The goal is to detect changes in the mean of Weibull lifetimes with censored data under both known and estimated parameter conditions. The performance of the proposed MDE chart is evaluated by the average run length (ARL). Besides a simulation study, a real-life data set on kiloelectron-volt E(keV) related to the alpha decays of the 177 Lutetium isotope is also discussed. It is observed that the proposed chart is more efficient than existing control charts for monitoring kiloelectron-volt E(keV) censored data.

AI-Driven Prediction of Symptom Trajectories in Cancer Care: A Deep Learning Approach for Chemotherapy Management.

This study presents an advanced method for predicting symptom escalation in chemotherapy patients using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The accurate prediction of symptom escalation is critical in cancer care to enable timely interventions and improve symptom management to enhance patients' quality of life during treatment. The analytical dataset consists of daily self-reported symptom logs from chemotherapy patients, including a wide range of symptoms, such as nausea, fatigue, and pain. The original dataset was highly imbalanced, with approximately 84% of the data containing no symptom escalation. The data were resampled into varying interval lengths to address this imbalance and improve the model's ability to detect symptom escalation (n = 3 to n = 7 days). This allowed the model to predict significant changes in symptom severity across these intervals. The results indicate that shorter intervals (n = 3 days) yielded the highest overall performance, with the CNN model achieving an accuracy of 81%, precision of 87%, recall of 80%, and an F1 score of 83%. This was an improvement over the LSTM model, which had an accuracy of 79%, precision of 85%, recall of 79%, and an F1 score of 82%. The model's accuracy and recall declined as the interval length increased, though precision remained relatively stable. The findings demonstrate that both CNN's temporospatial feature extraction and LSTM's temporal modeling effectively capture escalation patterns in symptom progression. By integrating these predictive models into digital health systems, healthcare providers can offer more personalized and proactive care, enabling earlier interventions that may reduce symptom burden and improve treatment adherence. Ultimately, this approach has the potential to significantly enhance the overall quality of life for chemotherapy patients by providing real-time insights into symptom trajectories and guiding clinical decision making.

A semi-automatic pipeline integrating histological and µCT data in a mouse model of lung fibrosis.

Drug discovery strongly relies on the thorough evaluation of preclinical experimental studies. In the context of pulmonary fibrosis, micro-computed tomography (µCT) and histology are well-established and complementary tools for assessing, in animal models, disease progression and response to treatment. µCT offers dynamic, real-time insights into disease evolution and the effects of therapies, while histology provides a detailed microscopic examination of lung tissue. Here, we present a semi-automatic pipeline that integrates these readouts by matching individual µCT volume slices with the corresponding histological sections, effectively linking densitometric data with Ashcroft score measurements. The tool first geometrically aligns the vertical axis of the µCT volume with the cutting plane used to prepare the histological sample. Then, focusing on the left lung, it computes the affine registration that identifies the µCT coronal slice that best matches the histological section. Finally, quantitative µCT imaging parameters are extracted from the selected slice. In a proof-of-concept test, the tool was applied to a bleomycin-induced mouse model of lung fibrosis. The proposed approach demonstrated high accuracy and time effectiveness in matching µCT and histological sections minimizing manual intervention, with an overall success rate of 95%, and reduced time required to align µCT and histological data from 40 to 5min. Significant correlations were found between quantitative data derived from µCT and histology data. The precise combination of microscopic ex-vivo information with 3D in-vivo data enhances the accuracy and representativeness of tissue analysis and provides a structural context for omic studies, serving as the foundation for a multi-layer platform. By facilitating a detailed and objective view of disease progression and treatment response, this approach has the potential to accelerate the development of effective therapies for lung fibrosis.

A Comprehensive Survey on Requirements and Design of AI-Powered Clinical Intelligence Systems in Healthcare

With the increasing complexity of healthcare services, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a vital tool to support medical practitioners by providing real-time clinical insights, automating routine documentation, and enhancing patient engagement. This survey investigates the design requirements, technical challenges, and ethical considerations for AI-powered clinical intelligence systems intended for healthcare environments. Our study is based on a survey conducted with healthcare professionals, patients, and AI researchers, capturing diverse perspectives on functionality, usability, data privacy, and ethical concerns. This paper synthesizes these insights into a detailed requirement analysis that can guide the development of clinically effective, ethically sound, and user-centric AI systems. Through this analysis, we aim to lay the groundwork for creating AIdriven tools that improve clinical workflows, foster better patient outcomes, and support healthcare professionals in delivering quality care.

Generative AI for Consumer Behavior Prediction: Techniques and Applications

Generative AI techniques, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), and transformers, have revolutionized consumer behavior prediction by enabling the synthesis of realistic data and extracting meaningful insights from large, unstructured datasets. However, despite their potential, the effectiveness of these models in practical applications remains inadequately addressed in the existing literature. This study aims to investigate how generative AI models can effectively enhance consumer behavior prediction and their implications for real-world applications in marketing and customer engagement. By systematically reviewing 31 studies focused on these models in e-commerce, energy data modeling, and public health, we identify their contributions to improving personalized marketing, inventory management, and customer retention. Specifically, transformer models excel at processing complicated sequential data for real-time consumer insights, while GANs and VAEs are effective in generating realistic data and predicting customer behaviors such as churn and purchasing intent. Additionally, this review highlights significant challenges, including data privacy concerns, the integration of computing resources, and the limited applicability of these models in real-world scenarios.

Integrating Friction Noise for In Situ Monitoring of Polymer Wear Performance: A Machine Learning Approach in Tribology

Abstract Friction and wear between mating surfaces significantly affect the efficiency and performance of mechanical systems. Traditional tribological research relies on post-observation methods, limiting the understanding of dynamic friction behavior. In contrast, in situ monitoring provides real-time insights into evolving friction dynamics. This study employs machine learning to monitor polymer wear performance through friction noise. The predictive accuracy of various machine learning methods, including Extremely Randomized Trees, Gradient-Boosting Decision Trees, AdaBoost, LightGBM, Deep Forest, and Deep Neural Networks, is compared for wear-type classification. Additionally, the LSBoost regression is selected as the optimal method for predicting polymer wear-rates across various temperatures. The results underscore the potential of using friction noise and machine learning for real-time wear monitoring, offering valuable insights for tribological system maintenance and failure prediction.

THE STUDENTS' AND TEACHERS’ IMPRESSION TOWARD NEARPOD APPS IN LEARNING ENGLISH OF CURRICULUM MERDEKA PERSPECTIVES

This article discusses using an application for Education called Nearpod. Nearpod is an application with real-time insights into student understanding through interactive lessons, gamified learning, formative assessment, and other exciting activities. Nearpod can be personalized instruction for individual students, small group assignments, or homework to differentiate and allow students to work independently, which all this feature in line with the framework of Kurikulum Merdeka. This research was done by using qualitative approach. In this article, the author wants to find students' and teacher perceptions or feedback about their experience learning and teaching English by using Nearpod in the classroom. the interview was used as the instrument in collecting main data. Hence, 5 students became the sample in this research. Besides that, the author also provides the observation as the supporting data to look on how the student engage with the apps. The data were taken from a school in Tangerang, Banten province. This school has been applying of Kurikulum merdeka for 4 years. In which, this will have a strong bond between the demand in both curriculum and this app. The result of the research shows thematic dimensions of positive and negative feedbacks. Those are memory of learning retention, creativity and critical thinking, new environment experience, advantages and disadvantages for future suggestions.

Dynamic liquid level prediction for multiple oil wells based on transfer learning and multidimensional feature fusion network

Abstract Accurate prediction of the dynamic liquid level (DLL) in oil wells is crucial for the intelligent optimization of pumping systems. It provides real-time insights into the operational conditions of the pumping system but also supports the optimization of operational parameters with data. However, due to the long-term operation of oil wells and their complex internal environments, direct measurement of the DLL is challenging, leading to low reliability of the obtained data. Therefore, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the parameters involved in the pumping process, identifies the model’s input features, and develops a DLL prediction model for multiple wells based on multidimensional feature fusion (MFF). This model captures the characteristics of DLL changes and the diversity of input features. To address the issues of slow model training and low prediction accuracy caused by insufficient datasets in practical applications, this paper integrates transfer learning (TL) techniques. It proposes a new model, the DLL model for multiple wells based on TL and multidimensional feature fusion (TMFF). Initially, the Euclidean distance and maximum mean discrepancy methods are employed to verify the feature similarity between the source and target domains, using highly similar DLL data as experimental data. By combining TL techniques with the MFF model, the TMFF model is established. The model’s capabilities are validated using field-collected data with broad representativeness. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MFF model possesses high accuracy and generalization capability. Additionally, the TMFF model effectively resolves the issue of insufficient data during model training. In summary, the methods proposed in this paper can provide accurate DLL data for practical applications in intelligent oilfields.

Abstract The genomic analysis pipeline involves multiple stages, including data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL), exploratory data analysis (EDA), machine learning (ML) modeling, and reporting. The ETL stage involves data profiling and quality control measures to ensure data integrity and consistency. The EDA stage employs statistical and visualization methods to understand data distribution, identify patterns, and detect anomalies. Machine learning modelling involves supervised classification techniques, such as logistic regression and support vector machines (SVMs), to predict tumour classification and develop gene signatures. Unsupervised classification techniques, such as K-means clustering and Hierarchical clustering, identify patterns and relationships in genomic data. Quality metrics evaluate data completeness, accuracy, and consistency, ensuring data reliability and validity. The integration of data science techniques into a comprehensive framework can be achieved with the development of Application Dashboards that provide real-time insights into genomic data across every stage of the analysis pipeline. This enables clinical researchers and bioinformaticians to make informed decisions quickly, improving turn-around time and accelerating the discovery of new insights. In contrast to conventional methods of using stand-alone scripts, these dashboards offer a reusable and scalable solution, allowing for easy modification and adaptation to new datasets and analysis pipelines, thereby reducing development effort and increasing productivity. The dashboards constitute a centralized platform for data visualization, exploration, and analysis, facilitating collaboration and communication among research team members. With customizable and interactive visualizations, users can explore genomic data from multiple dimensions and the integration of multiple sources, including genomic and transcriptomic data. The technologies used to power this Research suite include Streamlit for Web App development, Python for data analysis, Opensearch for data storage and other utility libraries for reporting.

These AI-driven models can analyze vast and diverse data sources—including sensor readings, maintenance logs, environmental conditions, and historical failures—to provide accurate, real-time insights into equipment health. This paper details the architecture and functioning of generative AI models in predictive maintenance, emphasizing their role in both anomaly detection and failure prediction. A systematic comparison of reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance is provided, underscoring the unique benefits and challenges of predictive maintenance. We discuss the types of data essential for predictive maintenance and present sample data structures used in model training and deployment. Additionally, this paper demonstrates how generative AI models predict equipment failures by identifying anomalous behaviors before they escalate, enabling preemptive actions. A failure probability model is presented to illustrate how failure risks evolve over time, alongside tables showcasing the critical data points in predictive maintenance. The paper also explores the optimization of maintenance schedules using generative AI, where models simulate and compare different maintenance timing strategies, ultimately minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.
