Bifurcation delay and front propagation in the real Ginzburg-Landau equation on a time-dependent domain.

This work analyzes bifurcation delay and front propagation in the one-dimensional real Ginzburg-Landau equationwith periodic boundary conditions on isotropically growing or shrinking domains. First, we obtain closed-form expressions for the delay of primary bifurcations on a growing domain and show that the additional domain growth before the appearance of a pattern is independent of the growth time scale. We also quantify primary bifurcation delay on a shrinking domain; in contrast with a growing domain, the time scale of domain compression is reflected in the additional compression before the pattern decays. For secondary bifurcations such as the Eckhaus instability, we obtain a lower bound on the delay of phase slips due to a time-dependent domain. We also construct a heuristic model to classify regimes with arrested phase slips, i.e., phase slips that fail to develop. Then, we study how propagating fronts are influenced by a time-dependent domain. We identify three types of pulled fronts: homogeneous, pattern spreading, and Eckhaus fronts. By following the linear dynamics, we derive expressions for the velocity and profile of homogeneous fronts on a time-dependent domain. We also derive the natural "asymptotic" velocity and front profile and show that these deviate from predictions based on the marginal stability criterion familiar from fixed domain theory. This difference arises because the time dependence of the domain lifts the degeneracy of the spatial eigenvalues associated with speed selection and represents a fundamental distinction from the fixed domain theory that we verify using direct numerical simulations. The effect of a growing domain on pattern spreading and Eckhaus front velocities is inspected qualitatively and found to be similar to that of homogeneous fronts. These more complex fronts can also experience delayed onset. Lastly, we show that dilution-an effect present when the order parameter is conserved-increases bifurcation delay and amplifies changes in the homogeneous front velocity on time-dependent domains. The study provides general insight into the effects of domain growth on pattern onset, pattern transitions, and front propagation in systems across different scientific fields.

Nonlinear Stability of Periodic Roll Solutions in the Real Ginzburg–Landau Equation Against C_{textrm{ub}}^m-Perturbations

The real Ginzburg–Landau equation arises as a universal amplitude equation for the description of pattern-forming systems exhibiting a Turing bifurcation. It possesses spatially periodic roll solutions which are known to be stable against localized perturbations. It is the purpose of this paper to prove their stability against bounded perturbations, which are not necessarily localized. Since all state-of-the-art techniques rely on localization or periodicity properties of perturbations, we develop a new method, which employs pure L^infty -estimates only. By fully exploiting the smoothing properties of the semigroup generated by the linearization, we are able to close the nonlinear iteration despite the slower decay rates. To show the wider relevance of our method, we also apply it to the amplitude equation as it appears for pattern-forming systems with an additional conservation law.

Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains

We have theoretically investigated the phenomenon of Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns arising in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains, in both supercritical and subcritical regime. Adopting multiple-scale weakly-nonlinear analysis, we have deduced the cubic and cubic–quintic real Ginzburg–Landau equations ruling the evolution of pattern amplitude close to criticality. Starting from these envelope equations, we have provided the explicit expressions of the most relevant dynamical features characterizing primary and secondary quantized branches of any order: stationary amplitude, existence and stability thresholds and linear growth rate. Particular emphasis is given on the subcritical regime, where cubic and cubic–quintic Ginzburg–Landau equations predict qualitatively different dynamical pictures. As an illustrative example, we have compared the above-mentioned analytical predictions to numerical simulations carried out on the hyperbolic modified Klausmeier model, a conceptual tool used to describe the generation of stationary vegetation stripes over flat arid environments. Our analysis has also allowed to elucidate the role played by inertia during the transient regime, where an unstable patterned state evolves towards a more favorable stable configuration through sequences of phase-slips. In particular, we have inspected the functional dependence of time and location at which wavelength adjustment takes place as well as the possibility to control these quantities, independently of each other.

The α-dependence of the invariant measure of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by α-stable Lévy processes

This paper is intended to establish the connection between stochastic dynamical systems with non-Gaussian noises and stochastic dynamical systems with Gaussian noises, by considering the convergence behavior of invariant probability measures for stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy process, in the limit α→2. Indeed, we prove that the invariant measure of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation on torus and driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy processes converges to the invariant measure of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation forced by cylindrical Brownian motions under the Wasserstein distance, as α tends to 2. We state our strategy as below.First, by using an abstract result given by Hairer and Mattingly, we prove that a type of Wasserstein distance is contracting for the dual operator of Markov semigroup associated with the limit equation which forced by Brownian motions. Then, through server priori uniform moment estimates and a convergence result on stochastic convolutions of cylindrical subordinated Brownian motions, we establish a strong convergence result on the solution of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by cylindrical subordinated Brownian motions conditioned on the initial data is distributed as an invariant measure, in the limit α→2. Finally, by the Monge-Kantorovich duality, we prove that the invariant probability measure of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy processes converges to the invariant measure of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation forced by Brownian motions under the Wasserstein distance.

Past and Present Trends in the Development of the Pattern-Formation Theory: Domain Walls and Quasicrystals

A condensed review is presented for two basic topics in the theory of pattern formation in nonlinear dissipative media: (i) domain walls (DWs, alias grain boundaries), which appear as transient layers between different states occupying semi-infinite regions, and (ii) two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) quasiperiodic (QP) patterns, which are built as a superposition of plane–wave modes with incommensurate spatial periodicities. These topics are selected for the present review, dedicated to the 70th birthday of Professor Michael I. Tribelsky, due to the impact made on them by papers of Prof. Tribelsky and his coauthors. Although some findings revealed in those works may now seem “old”, they keep their significance as fundamentally important results in the theory of nonlinear DW and QP patterns. Adding to the findings revealed in the original papers by M.I. Tribelsky et al., the present review also reports several new analytical results, obtained as exact solutions to systems of coupled real Ginzburg–Landau (GL) equations. These are a new solution for symmetric DWs in the bimodal system including linear mixing between its components; a solution for a strongly asymmetric DWs in the case when the diffusion (second-derivative) term is present only in one GL equation; a solution for a system of three real GL equations, for the symmetric DW with a trapped bright soliton in the third component; and an exact solution for DWs between counter-propagating waves governed by the GL equations with group-velocity terms. The significance of the “old” and new results, collected in this review, is enhanced by the fact that the systems of coupled equations for two- and multicomponent order parameters, addressed in this review, apply equally well to modeling thermal convection, multimode light propagation in nonlinear optics, and binary Bose–Einstein condensates.

New findings for the old problem: Exact solutions for domain walls in coupled real Ginzburg-Landau equations

This work reports new exact solutions for domain-wall (DW) states produced by a system of coupled real Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations which model patterns in thermal convection, optics, and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). An exact solution for symmetric DW was known for a single value of the cross-interaction coefficient, G=3 (defined so that its self-interaction counterpart is 1). Here an exact asymmetric DW is obtained for the system in which the diffusion term is absent in one component. It exists for all G>1. Also produced is an exact solution for DW in the symmetric real-GL system which includes linear coupling. In addition, an effect of a trapping potential on the DW is considered, which is relevant to the case of BEC. In a system of three GL equations, an exact solution is obtained for a composite state including a two-component DW and a localized state in the third component. Bifurcations which create two lowest composite states are identified too. Lastly, exact solutions are found for the system of real GL equations for counterpropagating waves, which represent a sink or source of the waves, as well as for a system of three equations which includes a standing localized component.

Eckhaus Instability in Laser Cavities With Harmonically Swept Filters

In this paper, we report the existence of Eckhaus instability in laser cavities with harmonically swept filters, of which Fourier Domain Mode Locked (FDML) laser is an important example. We show that such laser cavities can be modeled by a real Ginzburg Landau equation with a frequency shifting term arisen from the cavity dispersion. We analytically derived a solution of the governing equation and analyzed its stability. We found that the cavity dispersion introduces a continuous frequency shift to the laser signal such that it will be eventually pushed outside the stable region and trigger the Eckhaus instability. We show that the repeated triggering of the Eckhaus instability in the laser cavities is the dominant effect that leads to the high frequency fluctuations in FDML laser output, which is the unique feature of such laser cavities and intrinsically limits the signal quality of the FDML lasers with nonzero cavity dispersion.

The Study of the Numerical Treatment of the Real Ginzburg–Landau Equation Using the Galerkin Method

The real Ginzburg–Landau equation is studied in this article. We proceed and use the Galerkin method in combination with the compactness theorem to show that the solution of this problem exists and is unique in appropriate Sobolev spaces. This is proceeded by the designing of a reliable nonlinear numerical scheme from the afore mentioned problem and further show that this scheme is stable. Furthermore, the optimal rate of convergence of the scheme is determined in some appropriate spaces with emphasizes on the fact that the numerical solution from this scheme preserves all the qualitative properties of the exact solution and the numerical experiments are conducted with the help of an example to justify the theory.

The Effect of Modulation on Heat Transport by a Weakly Nonlinear Thermal Instability in the Presence of Applied Magnetic Field and Internal Heating

The present paper deals with a weakly nonlinear stability problem under an imposed time-periodic thermal modulation. The temperature has two parts: a constant part and an externally imposed time-dependent part. We focus on stationary convection using the slow time scale and quantify convective amplitude through the real Ginzburg-Landau equation (GLE). We have used the classical fourth order Runge-Kutta method to solve the real Ginzburg-Landau equation. The effect of various parameters on heat transport is discussed through GLE. It is found that heat transport analysis is controlled by suitably adjusting the frequency and amplitude of modulation. The applied magnetic field (effect of Ha) is to diminish the heat transfer in the system. Three different types of modulations thermal, gravity, and magnetic field have been compared. It is concluded that thermal modulation is more effective than gravity and magnetic modulation. The magnetic modulation stabilizes more and gravity modulation stabilizes partially than thermal modulation.

Eckhaus selection: The mechanism of pattern persistence in a reaction-diffusion system.

In this work, we show theoretically and numerically that a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion system, near the Turing bifurcation, produces different number of stripes when, in addition to random noise, the Fourier mode of a prepattern used to initialize the system changes. We also show that the Fourier modes that persist are inside the Eckhaus stability regions, while those outside this region follow a wave number selection process not predicted by the linear analysis. To test our results, we use the Brusselator reaction-diffusion system obtaining an excellent agreement between the weakly nonlinear predictions of the real Ginzburg-Landau equations and the numerical solutions near the bifurcation. Although the persistence of patterns is not relevant as a simple generating mechanism of self-organization, it is crucial to understand the formation of patterns that occurs in multiple stages. In this work, we discuss the relevance of our results on the robustness and diversity of solutions in multiple-steps mechanisms of biological pattern formation and auto-organization in growing domains.

Large deviation principle of occupation measures for non-linear monotone SPDEs

Using the hyper-exponential recurrence criterion, a large deviation principle for the occupation measure is derived for a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations. The main results are applied to many concrete SPDEs such as stochastic $p$-Laplace equation, stochastic porous medium equation, stochastic fast-diffusion equation, and even stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $\alpha$-stable noises.

Ergodicity and exponential mixing of the real Ginzburg-Landau equation with a degenerate noise

In this paper, we establish the existence, uniqueness and attraction properties of an invariant measure for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation in the presence of a degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in four directions. The main challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the Markovian dynamics corresponding to this system. To achieve this, we propose a condition which only requires four noises.

Averaging principle for stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $ \alpha $-stable process

In this paper, we study a system of stochastic partial differential equations with slow and fast time-scales, where the slow component is a stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation and the fast component is a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation, the system is driven by $\alpha$-stable process with $\alpha\in (1,2)$. Using the classical Khasminskii approach based on time discretization and the techniques of stopping times, we show that the slow component strong converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation under some suitable conditions.

Structure preserving reduced order modeling for gradient systems

Minimization of energy in gradient systems leads to formation of oscillatory and Turing patterns in reaction-diffusion systems. These patterns should be accurately computed using fine space and time meshes over long time horizons to reach the spatially inhomogeneous steady state. In this paper, a reduced order model (ROM) is developed which preserves the gradient dissipative structure. The coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations are discretized in space by the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPG) method. The resulting system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are integrated in time by the average vector field (AVF) method, which preserves the energy dissipation of the gradient systems. The ROMs are constructed by the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) with Galerkin projection. The nonlinear reaction terms are computed efficiently by discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM). Preservation of the discrete energy of the FOMs and ROMs with POD-DEIM ensures the long term stability of the steady state solutions. Numerical simulations are performed for the gradient dissipative systems with two specific equations; real Ginzburg–Landau equation and Swift–Hohenberg equation. Numerical results demonstrate that the POD-DEIM reduced order solutions preserve well the energy dissipation over time and at the steady state.

Nonlinear Stability at the Eckhaus Boundary

The real Ginzburg-Landau equation possesses a family of spatially periodic equilibria. If the wave number of an equilibrium is strictly below the so called Eckhaus boundary the equilibrium is known to be spectrally and diffusively stable, i.e., stable w.r.t. small spatially localized perturbations. If the wave number is above the Eckhaus boundary the equilibrium is unstable. Exactly at the boundary spectral stability holds. The purpose of the present paper is to establish the diffusive stability of these equilibria. The limit profile is determined by a nonlinear equation since a nonlinear term turns out to be marginal w.r.t. the linearized dynamics.

The Weakly Nonlinear Magnetorotational Instability in a Global, Cylindrical Taylor–Couette Flow

Abstract We conduct a global, weakly nonlinear analysis of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a Taylor–Couette flow. This is a multiscale, perturbative treatment of the nonideal, axisymmetric MRI near threshold, subject to realistic radial boundary conditions and cylindrical geometry. We analyze both the standard MRI, initialized by a constant vertical background magnetic field, and the helical MRI, with an azimuthal background field component. This is the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the MRI in a global Taylor–Couette geometry, as well as the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the helical MRI. We find that the evolution of the amplitude of the standard MRI is described by a real Ginzburg–Landau equation (GLE), whereas the amplitude of the helical MRI takes the form of a complex GLE. This suggests that the saturated state of the helical MRI may itself be unstable on long spatial and temporal scales.

Irreducibility of stochastic real Ginzburg–Landau equation driven by $\alpha$-stable noises and applications

We establish the irreducibility of stochastic real Ginzburg–Landau equation with $\alpha$-stable noises by a maximal inequality and solving a control problem. As applications, we prove that the system converges to its equilibrium measure with exponential rate under a topology stronger than total variation and obeys the moderate deviation principle by constructing some Lyapunov test functions.

Topological stabilization for synchronized dynamics on networks

A general scheme is proposed and tested to control the symmetry breaking instability of a homogeneous solution of a spatially extended multispecies model, defined on a network. The inherent discreteness of the space makes it possible to act on the topology of the inter-nodes contacts to achieve the desired degree of stabilization, without altering the dynamical parameters of the model. Both symmetric and asymmetric couplings are considered. In this latter setting the web of contacts is assumed to be balanced, for the homogeneous equilibrium to exist. The performance of the proposed method are assessed, assuming the Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation as a reference model. In this case, the implemented control allows one to stabilize the synchronous limit cycle, hence time-dependent, uniform solution. A system of coupled real Ginzburg-Landau equations is also investigated to obtain the topological stabilization of a homogeneous and constant fixed point.

Forced snaking: Localized structures in the real Ginzburg-Landau equation with spatially periodic parametric forcing

We study spatial localization in the real subcritical Ginzburg-Landau equation u t = m 0 u + Q(x)u + u xx + d|u|2 u −|u|4 u with spatially periodic forcing Q(x). When d>0 and Q ≡ 0 this equation exhibits bistability between the trivial state u = 0 and a homogeneous nontrivial state u = u 0 with stationary localized structures which accumulate at the Maxwell point m 0 = −3d 2/16. When spatial forcing is included its wavelength is imprinted on u 0 creating conditions favorable to front pinning and hence spatial localization. We use numerical continuation to show that under appropriate conditions such forcing generates a sequence of localized states organized within a snakes-and-ladders structure centered on the Maxwell point, and refer to this phenomenon as forced snaking. We determine the stability properties of these states and show that longer lengthscale forcing leads to stationary trains consisting of a finite number of strongly localized, weakly interacting pulses exhibiting foliated snaking.

Wavefront invasion for a volume-filling chemotaxis model with logistic growth

This paper is devoted to study the propagation of the pattern in a large domain for a volume-filling model with chemotaxis. By deriving the real Ginzburg–Landau equation governing the evolution of pattern amplitude we show that the pattern invades the whole domain in the form of a traveling wave, which implies the existence of a traveling front solution connecting a uniform steady state and a stationary pattern in the considered model with a large chemotactic parameter. The numerical results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. This work is a significant supplement of the related literature.
