Sinkretisme Islam dan Hindu (Studi Terhadap Tradisi Rasol Bu’sobu’ Pelet Betheng di Desa Gunung Sekar Madura)

Tradition and culture give another color to the living conditions of the community. The traditions and cultures adopted provide an explanation of religious practices. Although in essence culture is the result of human creation that has certain norms and rules. Rasol Bu’sobu’ pelet Betheng tradition, for example, is one of the traditions in Java, intended for pregnant women whose pregnancies have entered the seventh month. In this tradition there is a mixture of Islamic and Hindu elements. The ritual begins with reading verses from the Qur'an and from Surah Yusuf, Surah Maryam and prayers to the Prophet with the hope that the newborn baby will make the Qur'an and Hadith the source of his life. These are the elements that exist in Islam. Hindu elements include giving food to gods and goddesses or to spirits known from supernatural whispers. Bathing to purify the body and soul from mistakes or sins, as well as bringing seven flowers, eggs, young coconuts, and a chicken.

This research investigates the employment of simile as a figurative device in the poetry of the renowned Arabic poet Al-Mutanabbi and the celebrated Hausa poet Saidu Faru. By examining shared imagery and stylistic choices across these distinct linguistic and cultural contexts, this study aims to illuminate the universal nature of simile as a poetic tool. Through a comparative analysis of their works, the research explores the underlying principles of simile, its role in evoking emotional responses, and its contribution to poetic expression. The methodology involves a close reading of Al-Mutanabbi's poetry and transcription of Saidu Faru's songs, complemented by secondary sources. Comparative analysis reveals that while both poets extensively utilize similes for vivid imagery and emotional resonance, cultural context significantly influences the choice of comparative elements. Al-Mutanabbi's similes often reference desert landscapes and Arabian horses, while Saidu Faru draws inspiration from nature, agriculture, and local folklore. This study contributes to understanding the power of simile in shaping poetic expression across different cultural and linguistic traditions.

BUILDING STUDENTS' SKILLS IN READING POETRY TEXTS WITH CREATIVITY AND INTEREST

The aim of this research is to arouse students' interest in reading poetry through a poetry musicalization approach. The service team conducted a situation analysis with partners and found that students' interest in reading poetry was low due to a lack of understanding and appreciation of poetry and a lack of student creativity in representing poetry. Creativity can help students develop critical and creative thinking skills, solve problems, and innovate in various fields. The musicalization of poetry approach was chosen as the method in this activity because it can increase appreciation and understanding of literary works, especially poetry. Musicalization of poetry can make poetry more interesting and easier for students to understand and improve students' language and artistic skills. This method is effective for increasing appreciation of poetry and helping students to develop their creative abilities.

The Jigsaw of Dis-coloration: Anti-Caste Poetics and The Absent Color

The article is a critical review essay that contextualises, discusses, and theorises anti-caste poetics in the context of discussions on Dalit aesthetics and experience vis à vis postcolonialism and subaltern studies, foregrounding an English poetry collection by a/nil, aka, Anilkumar Payyappilly Vijayan titled The Absent Color (New Delhi: Navayana, 2023). I propose that a/nil’s poetry, in comparison to discussions on world literatures, demands a specific labor in reading; his writing produces an annihilation of a given sensibility in reading poetry. I suggest that his poetry works like an inverse jigsaw puzzle, offering an anti-caste critique of a varna-centered world which is in place. The Absent Color, I argue, un-colors this world of deceptions, using discoloration (like annihilation) as a conceptual framework, to critique the world colored by caste.

AI-generated poetry is indistinguishable from human-written poetry and is rated more favorably

As AI-generated text continues to evolve, distinguishing it from human-authored content has become increasingly difficult. This study examined whether non-expert readers could reliably differentiate between AI-generated poems and those written by well-known human poets. We conducted two experiments with non-expert poetry readers and found that participants performed below chance levels in identifying AI-generated poems (46.6% accuracy, χ2(1, N = 16,340) = 75.13, p < 0.0001). Notably, participants were more likely to judge AI-generated poems as human-authored than actual human-authored poems (χ2(2, N = 16,340) = 247.04, p < 0.0001). We found that AI-generated poems were rated more favorably in qualities such as rhythm and beauty, and that this contributed to their mistaken identification as human-authored. Our findings suggest that participants employed shared yet flawed heuristics to differentiate AI from human poetry: the simplicity of AI-generated poems may be easier for non-experts to understand, leading them to prefer AI-generated poetry and misinterpret the complexity of human poems as incoherence generated by AI.

Analyzing Asymmetric Prosody in Salim's Poetry: A Critical Examination of Words, Phrases, Poetic Lines and Punctuations

In this research, titled "Analyzing Asymmetric Prosody in Salim's Poetry: A Critical Examination of words, phrases, poetic lines and punctuations," we conduct a comprehensive and practical analysis to identify errors and asymmetric rhythmic prosody within Salim's poetry, focusing on the edition we have diligently worked on. Our study aims to explore potential solutions in accordance with established prosody criteria. Salim's body of work encompasses several books of poetry, with our research specifically delving into the most recent edition published in 2015 in Sulaimani by Mullah Abdulkarim Mudaris, Fatih Abdulkarim, and Mohammed Mullah Karim. We selected this edition due to its freshness and its incorporation of improvements from previous editions, making it a widely embraced reference among both writers and readers of Salim's poetry. Our research comprises four primary themes. Firstly, we analyze disruptions at the level of words and phrases. Secondly, we investigate instances of rhythmic disruptions resulting at the level of poetic hemistich. Thirdly, we explore disruptions caused at the level of poetic lines. Lastly, we analyze disruptions at the level of punctuations. In conclusion, our study offers valuable insights into the content of Salim's poetry by shedding light on its prosodic nuances and providing potential remedies for asymmetries.

Communicating in Verse: How Reading Poetry Can Expand How We Care for Patients.

It is a foundational principle of medical humanities that the appreciation of literature and other humanities enrich and expand medical training. But what are the mechanisms by which this happens? As a faculty member and former medical student, who met during an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional 5-session poetry seminar, we reflect on how poetry enriches our own experiences working with patients, as well as how we care for patients. Reading poetry in medicine has the potential to enhance observational skills, model an appreciation of uncertainties, and generate joy. Similar to our seminar, other institutions may also consider incorporating poetry into curricula.

“The wrong side of the desk”: Material and Discursive Struggle in Bud Osborn’s Downtown Eastside

Abstract Bud Osborn (1947-2014) was an American poet and activist who arrived in Vancouver, Canada in 1986. He landed in Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, the Downtown Eastside (DTES), while struggling with heroin addiction. The DTES is a complex and politically active neighbourhood and site of intersecting social crises. Osborn would spend the remainder of his life capturing this community in his poetry, which is often understood solely through activism for harm reduction and against gentrification. In this article, I engage with his poetry to understand the politics which motivate his activism. This exploration will include a variety of textual mediums, voices, and analytic perspectives to capture the complex politics contained in his words. I believe that by reading his words we can examine his complicated self-positionality as a PWUD (people who use drugs) and a member of the lumpenproletariat who occupied sociocultural spaces that often excluded those from his social standing. This examination shows how he constitutes the DTES as a space of material and discursive struggle. What emerges from this examination is how his poetic resistance at the level of the signifier intertwines with his street-level resistance. That is, how the act of writing and reading poetry can be an act of defiance.

Shelley’s Syns: Synesthetic Melting and the Media of the Unpremeditated

ABSTRACT This article attempts to locate Percy Bysshe Shelley’s conception of ethics in the poet’s figure of audiovisual synesthesia. For Shelley, I argue, the deployment of synesthesia in “To a Sky-Lark” signals an investment in the problematic of reading poetry—of what it means to hear the music of poetry by seeing words on the page—and, therefore, involves an engagement with the explosion of print that characterizes Romanticism’s media culture. Synesthesia, in other words, becomes a problem of mediation, and it is by linking synesthesia to questions of reading and print that Shelley is able to offer an account of the ethics of media. I seek, then, to trace the development of synesthesia as ethical medium in Shelley’s lyric thought, a synesthesia that neither exactly synthesizes aural and visual, nor signals a mere absence of their relation. The relation that synesthesia comes to typify for Shelley is the very structure of media itself, a structure that joins together at precisely the moment it separates, thereby registering a non-relation at the very heart of relation, or a non-relation that nonetheless relates. In doing so, I hope to position Shelley as one of the most rigorous ethical thinkers of his generation.

Renewal of Modern Arabic Poetry: The Culture-Creativity Controversy

The present research raises critical issues regarding modern Arabic poetry, wondering about the limits of creativity starting from awareness about poetry writing to its reading prospects. It observes how the Arab poet is torn between focusing on the depth of culture (with what it imposes in terms of conforming to the prevailing poetic model) and between the temptations of creativity, which requires a level audacity and aspiration to different and renewed written models. The research disassembles the structure of poetry as a cultural system rooted in the Arab memory and discusses the question of identity in its relationship to creativity. It stresses the centrality of the traditional Arab poetic model while pointing to attempts at transcending such model. The most prominent of these attempts was that accomplished by the Arab poetic modernity movement in the forties and fifties of the last century (free poetry and prose poem). The research explores the rationale behind this decisive shift in the history of Arabic poetry at the levels of its creative and cultural foundations. In this regard, the research raised the question of leadership, the call for renewal, and defense of the pioneering poets of their innovative achievement against the successive creative booms. The research also discussed the controversy over tradition versus creativity, the question of dialogue in texts, the prospects for critical poetry reading with its scientific and cultural transformations, and the distribution of its theoretical and methodological references between Arab heritage and Western culture.

Regarding poetry that is read or performed in a competition event as big as FLS2N means that it also provides a separate experience for connoisseurs of this type of literary work. Literary works of poetry give literary connoisseurs a taste of their own. The holding of this poetry reading competition event makes poetry reading at the school level grow and develop. In addition, the activity becomes a spectacle as well as an achievement event for the school.

Learning children's literature through writing and reading poetry, a child can express life experiences and learn to express various problems and how to deal with them. Through learning literature one can get entertainment and pleasure. Besides that, through literature in the form of poetry, one can have politeness in language, because literary works are so rich in words that are arranged precisely and charmingly. The method used in this service is the presentation of the speakers in the form of exposure to various stages of techniques for writing children's poetry and also simulations or direct practice with the participants, followed by questions and answers and discussions then assessed by the teacher.

Effects of Theme, Form, and Language on Poetry Reading: Evidence From Chinese ESL Learners

While much remains unexplored about what influences how poetry is perceived, this study investigates how themes, form, and language interact in poetry perception, shedding light on their effects on the reading responses of Chinese ESL learners. Findings showed: (1) Versified form and L1 poems were more comprehensible; (2) Idyll and L1 poems were perceived as having richer imagery; (3) Form and language interact for rhythmicity, favoring L1 poems, especially the paragraphed L1 ones; (4) Language influenced perceived beauty, with L1 poems, especially love poems in versified form, rated as exceptionally beautiful; (5) Theme and language impacted perceived valence, with idyll and L2 poems being viewed more positively; form affected the perceived arousal, with versified poems rated as more exciting; (6) Form and language interacted, affecting reading time; versified L2 poems were read faster than paragraphed L1 and L2 poems. These findings hold significance for literary education and cross-cultural understanding.

A Promising Amalgamation

First-year law students often struggle with the transition from writing as an undergraduate to writing as a lawyer. Incorporating poetry into the first-year legal writing curriculum may assist students in making that transition. The close, active reading poetry requires is a strong scaffold to the critical reading lawyers must undertake. In addition, poetry aptly models how language can create an emotional impact, which is akin to how effective lawyers use language to tell a compelling story on their client's behalf. This Assignment has students read and analyze Gwendolyn Brooks's poem “Boy Breaking Glass,” and then imagine the protagonist of the poem was being criminally prosecuted for his act of vandalism and write the story of the case from both the defense side and the prosecution side. The Assignment enables students to appreciate how a text (or a set of facts giving rise to a legal dispute) can give rise to varied interpretations, and how language and storytelling techniques can be used persuasively.

A poetics of “Wind in a Box”

Abstract This essay is a re-application of the language codes of Roland Barthes and Jonathan Culler’s concept for Structuralist Poetics. The approach I use explores the codes demonstrated in Barthes’ well-known text, S/Z with slight modifications for their application to poetry. The concepts borrowed from Mr. Culler are from his book of the same title: Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics and the Study of Literature (Cornell University Press, 1975). Culler’s main argument is that there must be other, un-attempted strategies combined with conventional approaches in literature of that time period. His answer to this problem was to develop a set of linguistic-based concepts to compensate for the reader in the analysis of literary works. I have applied in this essay my approach based on Culler’s methodology and the language codes of Roland Barthes: semantic, symbolic, cultural-referential, actional and hermeneutic. I apply Culler’s concepts to a reading of poetry followed by an application of the language codes as a further development of my work in revitalizing this never-before applied method.

‘I Am Not A Melodramatic Person’: Defining the Lyric Diary

ABSTRACT For the past few years, I’ve been seeking out books that frustrate many readers—and sometimes myself among them. They are frequently described as sketchy, short, fragmented, diaristic—when the reader is being kind—and lazy, boring, or pointless when she is not. The official category (on the back of the book, right above the ISBN) sometimes reads Poetry, sometimes Novel, sometimes Memoir, sometimes Essay—or, sometimes Essay/Poetry or Essay/Literature. Some of the more famous examples include Sarah Manguso’s Ongoingness, Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely. In this essay, I will propose and define a new genre in contemporary literature: the lyric diary—a slender volume in which a depressed, middle-age, female first-person narrator records the mundane experiences of her everyday life alongside facts, ideas, and quotations in flat, affectless ‘shreds’ of prose. Blending elements of the confessional poem with the diary and other non-literary modes of historical women’s writing, the lyric diary rejects plot and the narrative arc for the lyric’s associative logic and the diary’s serial, episodic movement. The lyric diarist does not narrate: she records. It is all that she, exhausted from working the double shift, can manage to do.
