Effects of rational emotive psychotherapy consort on business education students' perception about image of technical vocational education and training in South-East Nigeria.

Background:We determined the effects of rational-emotive psychotherapy on the perception of Business Education Students about TVET Image. Negative perception about TVET by youths, parents and the society has made TVET programs unattractive, uninteresting, less productive and by extension created an unhealthy organizational climate. Improving participants’ perception will assist them to mitigate the effect of irrational beliefs, emotional distress, strengthening their psychosocial wellbeing and occupational health.Method:This study adopted a pre-test–post-test control group design. Data were collected from 568 participants comprising 104, 137, and 333 from nine federal, state and private owned universities in South-East Nigeria.Results:The result showed that rational-emotive psychotherapy significantly improved the emotional distress, perceptions of TVET image and positively addressed the organizational climate among participants in the intervention group compared to the participants in the waitlist group. The result also revealed that occupational risk management practices of the participants in the intervention group improved significantly more than those in the waitlist group. From the result, we conclude that TVET institutions can apply the REBT model as an intervention program for improving the perceptions of stakeholders about TVET image in order to increase students’ interest, boost their self-confidence, self-esteem, and zeal for TVET practices.Conclusion:It was concluded that the REBT-oriented therapy helped to improve the emotional distress, irrational beliefs, and poor perception of the Business Education students who perceived TVET programs as an inferior and low-esteemed profession.

Adjunct Aids to Rational Emotive Psychotherapy in the Treatment of Depression

Although Rational Emotive Psychotherapy is basically a cognitive therapy and approach to the treatment of emotional disturbance, it often should be implemented by a variety of other treatment options and avenues of investigation. This paper will provide a preliminary overview of Rational Emotive Psychotherapy and discuss other unexplored avenues which may facilitate treatment and the amelioration of emotional difficulties.

Peculiarities of Emotional Regulation with MVP Patients: A Study of the Effects of Rational-emotive Therapy

The present study examines the characteristics of the emotional experiences of patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and indicates ways to develop emotional regulation and to reduce clinical implications in MVP patients through the use of rational-emotive psychotherapy. We examined 290 MVP patients and 73 healthy subjects. The data show that MVP patients are distinguished from healthy subjects by increased hypersensibility in emotive situations and by anxiety, low recognition of one's needs and emotions, and a decline in the ability to regulate emotions. The psychotherapy produced good results: a sound tendency toward the development of personality reflection; improved structuring and recognition of emotional experience; and a reduction in the physical aspects of MVP.

Rational emotive psychotherapy and basic information in stress management for menopausal women in three local government areas of Oyo State, Nigeria

This study examined the relative effectiveness of Rational Emotive Psychotherapy and basic information on Physiological Knowledge in the reduction of menopausal stress in women selected in three Local Government area of Oyo State. A 3x2 factorial matrix using the pretest, posttest control quasi-experimental design was adopted. The sample consisted of 48 non-randomised participants who have reached menopause. Out of this number, 45(93.8%) presently leave with their spouses while 3(6.3%) are in widowhood. The participants age range is between 48 and 61 and had a Mean age of 54.8 (SD= 2.4).The Menopause Symptom Survey (MSS) was the research measure used to elicit participants` response. The MSS was constructed to reflect the5-points Likert scale. Two research hypotheses were tested at the margin error of 0.05 alpha with the use of ANCOVA and the Student- t statistical methods. Effects of client personality on dominance and affiliation during early sessions of rational-emotive psychotherapy

This is a study of effects of client personality on interpersonal presentation during early Rational-Emotive therapy (RET). Independent variables were intake scores for clients from the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI; Millon, 1983). Dependent variables, from audiotapes of sessions at the Institute for RET (IRET), were Revised Interpersonal Adjective Scale (IAS-R; Wiggins, Trapnell and Phillips, 1988) ratings of clients and therapists. Three commonly adaptive axis II traits (histrionic, narcissistic and antisocial) had significant positive effects on clients, increasing their apparent interpersonal dominance. Paranoid traits, which have previously shown either neutral or positive patterns, mirrored the adaptive patterns. Compulsive traits, which have also been helpful in other stressful situations, seemed maladaptive, however, here. Finally, six commonly maladaptive axis II traits (schizoid, avoidant, dependent, passive-aggressive, schizotypal and borderline) had weak, insignificant effects on clients. In general, these findings suggest that the IRET therapeutic setting may be a psychologically “safe” place for clients. Personality traits that are usually troublesome did not impair self presentation in early sessions of RET, and several usually positive traits appear helpful.

Effects of client presenting syndromes on client and therapist dominance and affiliation during early sessions of Rational-Emotive psychotherapy

This is a study of effects of presenting clinical status on interpersonal presentation during early Rational-Emotive therapy (RET). Independent variables were intake scores for clients from the axis I scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI; Millon, 1983). Dependent variables, from audiotapes of sessions at the Institute for RET (IRET), were Revised Interpersonal Adjective Scale (IAS-R; Wiggins, Trapnell and Phillips, 1988) ratings of clients and therapists. MCMI scales associated with stimulation seeking (N, hypomania; T, drug abuse) were significantly positively correlated with client dominance. Therapist affiliation was negatively correlated with all client MCMI scales, and these were significant for scales that assessed the most severe intake presenting problems (A, anxiety, D, dysthymia).

Group psychotherapy with pathological gamblers

This paper reviews some of the group therapy techniques utilized in the authors' work with pathological gamblers. These conceptual tools ranged from rational-emotive psychotherapy to Zen philosophy which provided a background and foundation for working with pathological gamblers. Many therapeutic and antitherapeutic beliefs and behaviors of gamblers are discussed including narcissism, manipulative behavior, and rejection of Gamblers Anonymous. Each technique, behavior or belief discussed is explained in terms of how each affects the group process and how each is managed in group therapy.

This paper describes the process of rational-emotive psychotherapy. Not a “how to do it” cookbook, it distinguishes RET as following four overlapping stages, called rational-emotive psychodiagnosis, rational-emotive insight, and rational-emotive working through I and II. Speech-rhythm characteristics of client-centered, gestalt, and rational-emotive therapy interviews

The aim of this study was to discover whether client-centered, Gestalt, and rational-emotive psychotherapy interviews could be described and differentiated on the basis of quantitative measurement of their speech rhythms. These measures were taken from the sound portion of a film showing interviews by Carl Rogers, Frederick Perls, and Albert Ellis. The variables used were total session and percentage of speaking times, speaking turns, vocalizations, interruptions, inside and switching pauses, and speaking rates. The three types of interview had very distinctive patterns of speech-rhythm variables. These patterns suggested that Rogers's Client-centered therapy interview was patient dominated, that Ellis's rational-emotive therapy interview was therapist dominated, and that Perl's Gestalt therapy interview was neither therapist nor patient dominated.

Private thought in rational emotive psychotherapy

This paper, which is theoretical in orientation, advances the argument that the characteristics of a client's thought are overlooked in rational emotive psychotherapy and that new avenues of professional practice and research may evolve from a detailed examination of the nature of thought. Psychodynamic, psycholinguistic, and cognitive-behavioral conceptions of factors that interfere with a client's ability to report his/her private thoughts are discussed. A model of thought is proposed that postulates levels of thought that vary in client awareness and that can be represented on a continuum from covert verbalization to abbreviated, elliptical private thought. Implications of this model for professional practice are discussed in the form of two therapeutic techniques that are directed to ward the assessment of private thought. It is argued that rational emotive assessment techniques may be too directive to ensure sufficient levels of self-discovery. It is further argued that to facilitate the maintenance and generalization of client change, therapeutic instructions should be expressed in a form that is compatible with and can be incorporated within the client's idiosyncratic intrapersonal communication system and cognitive structure.

Comparison of the predictive validity of two measures of psychotherapy prognosis.

Summary A comparison of the predictive validity of the Rorschach PRS and Barron's Es Scale was conducted with neurotic Ss receiving either behavior modification or rational-emotive psychotherapy. The results help to establish the efficacy of the PRS by empirically demonstrating efficient prediction for both groups when other relevant demographic and nontest variables have been controlled. In contrast, the Es Scale does not appear to be related to psychotherapy prognosis nor does it tap the same personality variables as the PRS.
