Sleeve gastrectomy with duodenojejunal bypass (SG/DJB) is a novel bariatric procedure for treating morbid obesity, especially with the risk of gastric cancer. However, scientific evidence of SG/DJB inducing biological and hormonal reactions is scarce, and detailed surgical models in rodents have not been established. This is the first study that describes a cost effective and reproducible surgical rat model of SG/DJB. This study was conducted at Kanazawa University Hospital, Japan. Zucker fatty rats, which were presumably obese, were used. Eighteen rats were surgically treated, and the surgical courses were recorded. The causes of death were assessed from autopsies, and the surgical procedure was modified. Four of the first eight cases died within seven days. But after several modifications to the procedure, the survival rate stabilized consequently. No significant difference was found in operative time between the successful and failed cases, which indicates that a well-defined surgical procedure was more important than surgical experience. We have created a surgical rat model of SG/DJB, which supplements the investigation of mechanisms and metabolic regulation by which SG/DJB affects organisms. • SG/DJB is performed for treating morbid obesity, mainly with gastric cancer risk. • Scientific evidence on SG/DJB inducing biological and hormonal reactions is scarce. • To verify biological influence of SG/DJB, animal models are required. • We report the first detailed SG/DJB surgical rat model with a surgical video.
