A rare case of malignant schwannoma of the brachial plexus

We report a rare case of malignant schwannoma of the brachial plexus treated during a surgical campaign aimed at the poorest communities in the Cuzco region of Peru. A Peruvian 40-year-old-female from a mountain community presented with a mass on the lateral side of her left supraclavicular space. No imaging tools were available during this surgical campaign and so a biopsy of the tumor was carried out. Histopathological examination revealed it to be a low grade malignant schwannoma. A nerve enucleation of the tumor was chosen as neither chemotherapy nor radiotherapy was available. The tumour was a firm mass 4 cm x 3 cm x 2 cm in size. After excision of the lesion the patient presented neurological sequelae (deltoid, bicep, and tricep weakness) but her condition improved over the next 3 years. We report this case of malignant schwannoma of the brachial plexus as its incidence is very rare (the reported incidence is 0.001%) and because of its challenging treatment in poor healthcare conditions. © 2013 Baishideng. Malignant Schwannoma Metastasizing to the Parenchyma of the Brain. Case Report.

A 48-year-old male presented with a very rare case of malignant schwannoma metastasizing to the parenchyma of the brain. He had undergone previous radical surgical resection of an abdominal wall tumor that was histologically confirmed as a malignant schwannoma. Five years later, the patient presented with metastases to the parenchyma of the brain and lung. A large mass at the left frontoparietal region was totally resected immediately after intratumoral hemorrhage. He recovered well and the lung metastasis was also removed, but he later developed further multiple metastases in the lung and brain.

Giant malignant schwannoma of the diaphragm: CT and ultrasound findings

A rare case of malignant schwannoma of the diaphragm is presented. The CT and ultrasound findings are described, correlated with the pathologic findings. During surgery, the tumor presented as a dumbbell shaped mass with central disruption of the right diaphragm.

This paper reported a very rare case of malignant schwannoma which probably arose from small branch of the inferior alveolar nerve.The 73-year-old woman patient had felt occasional spontaneous pain in the mandible right side for 4 years. Bony swelling with oppressive pain was observed in mandible right premolar and molar regions.Roentgenogram revealed a larger than hen egg-sized radiolucent lesion with reticular radiopaque appearance in mandible right side which was suspected myxoma.The patient was treated by segmental resection of the mandible. Postoperative pathological diagnosis was malignant schwannoma because part of the tumor cells showed atypism, mitosis and infiltration out of cortical bone.Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 protein.There was no evidence of recurrence and metastasis in the patient 5 years and 4 monthsafter operation. It was suggested that the tumor had low grade malignancy in this case.

A CASE OF MALIGNANT SCHWANNOMA ARISING IN THE BREAST REGION OF THE THORAX, ASSOCIATED WITH VON RECLLINGHAUSEN'S DISEASE

A rare case of malignant schwannoma arising in the right breast region of the thorax associated with von Recklinghausen's disease is reported. A 49-year-old female presented with a rapidly enlarging mass in the right breast. Chest CT revealed that the large tumor occupied the right breast and the bony thorax, further growing into the thoracic cavity. The chest wall resection and reconstruction by using a contralateral rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap were performed. The tumor adhered to the lung, diaphragma and pericardial wall, and was accompanied by disseminated nodules. The excised main tumor of a dumbell-shape was 20.5×15×11.5cm in size and 2060g in weight. Histological appearance of the tumor showed a malignant schwannoma probably arising from von Reckling hausen's disease. On immunohistochemical examination S-100 proein was positive in some tumor cells. Postoperative chemotherapy was done but the patient died of recurrence and respiratory insufficiency about 5 months after surgery.
