Rapid room-temperature synthesis of biocompatible metal–organic framework for enzyme immobilization with improved stability and on-demand release

Enzyme immobilization within metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) addresses the inherent fragility of enzymes, playing a crucial role across diverse industries by improving efficiency and lowering economic costs. While the application of MOFs in the food and pharmaceutical industries is constrained by toxicity concerns, MIL-88A(Fe) emerges as an ideal candidate due to its non-toxicity and biocompatibility. However, the release of encapsulated enzymes is significantly hampered, reducing their bioactivity. Herein, we present a safe and simple platform for creating enzyme@MIL-88A, which provides enzyme stabilization and controlled release. The thermal stabilization of a spectrum of enzymes (phytase, xylanase, amylase, mannanase, and glucanase) is achieved, elevating their endurance threshold to 95 °C. Furthermore, the controlled on-demand release of the encapsulated enzymes at target sites is accomplished by adjusting defects in enzyme@MIL-88A composites via an acid modulation approach, while preserving enzyme activity. This approach has improved the amount of enzyme released from 10 % to 99.7 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time enzyme@MIL-88A has been synthesized rapidly under mild conditions for enzyme stabilization and controlled release. Our method offers a universal platform for stabilizing vulnerable biomaterials and the controlled delivery of biological macromolecules.

Rapid room temperature synthesis of Mn-doped perovskite quantum dots for white-light-emitting diodes

All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have excellent photoelectric performance, such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM), and emission spectra covering the visible light wavelength. The emission color can be tuned over the full visible spectral region making them promising for white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Further control over the optical and magnetic properties of PQDs can be achieved through doping of transition metal ions such as Mn2+ ions. In this paper, a rapid doping method is employed at room temperature by using strong-acid cation-exchange resin during the metal ions doping process, which shortens the doping time, and Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br)3 QDs were obtained. By controlling the reaction time between strong-acid cation-exchange resin and PQDs, we achieve different levels of manganese doping, resulting in a new, to the best of our knowledge, fluorescence peak at 600 nm. The introduction of strong-acid cation-exchange resin preserves the integrity of the PQD structure, while completing the doping within 30 min. Due to the low cost and mild reaction conditions of resin, it is expected that the Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br)3 QDs can be mass-produced in large quantities. In addition, in order to provide high-quality white light emission, and prevent anion exchange reactions when mixed with CsPbBr3 QDs, the CsPbBr3 QDs are coated with silicon. Finally, by combining ultraviolet-light-emitting diodes (UVLEDs) with the aforementioned PQD mixture, this paper successfully fabricates WLEDs and demonstrates its excellent photoelectric performance. The constructed WLEDs produce warm white light with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 91 and a high correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5966 K, and the luminous efficacy (LE) of WLEDs is 41lmW−1.

Rapid room-temperature synthesis of disposable Co nanoparticles modified 3D N-doped porous carbon electrode device for efficient electrochemical detection of veterinary drug and pesticide residue

In this work, Co-based metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) coupled polyimide (ZIF-67/PI) film was fastly and effectively transformed into flexible Co nanoparticles modified 3D N-doped porous carbon (Co@3D NPC) electrode device using simple laser ablation technique at room temperature. Compared with 3D NPC electrode device that derived from pure polyimide film, Co@3D NPC exhibited significantly enhanced electron transfer ability, physical adsorption ability and electrochemically active surface area. By adjusting the laser power and ZIF-67 concentration, the surface morphology and electrochemical property of the Co@3D NPC electrode devices can be easily controlled. Furthermore, the fabricated flexible Co@/3D NPC electrode device exhibited exceptional electrochemical activity for the sensitive detection of clozapine and albendazole, two kinds of common veterinary drug and pesticide. The detection sensitivity of Co@/3D NPC electrode device reached to 410.47 μA μM−1 cm−2 and 580.33 μA μM−1 cm−2, with detection limits as low as 2.8 nM and 2.5 nM for clozapine and albendazole, respectively. Besides, the Co@/3D NPC electrode device demonstrated excellent stability and accuracy. Given the advantages of laser ablation technology, including its low cost, scalability, and high stability, the reported Co@/3D NPC electrode device holds significant potential for practical applications in the field of electrochemical analysis.

Rapid room-temperature synthesis of porous Sulfur-doped nickel-chromium-Layered Double Hydroxide for oxygen evolution catalysis in seawater splitting

Seawater splitting is a promising and sustainable technology for producing high-purity hydrogen, but its commercial application remains a major challenge due to the kinetically slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and severe corrosion in practical applications. In this work, we report a single-step approach to grow a highly porous Sulfur-doped nickel-chromium-Layered Double Hydroxide (S-doped NiCr-LDH) catalyst on Ni foam at room temperature. This rapid approach efficiently designs the surface of Ni foam into a porous S-doped NiCr-LDH layer with outstanding hydrophilic characteristics. The catalyst exhibits outstanding OER performance in alkaline freshwater and alkaline seawater electrolytes, requiring overpotentials of only 270 and 342 mV to achieve current densities of 100 mA cm−2, while also exhibiting an extremely long endurance of over 80 h. This simple OER catalyst preparation method could advance the development of hydrogen production from seawater splitting.

Application of a Perovskite NIR-LED with Highly Stable FAPbI3@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanocomposites in a SPR Sensing Platform.

In recent years, the demand for detection and diagnostic methods has consistently risen due to the aging of the population and the increase in the number of patients with chronic diseases. Label-free biomedical detection techniques have emerged as indispensable instruments for diagnosing a variety of diseases. The development of label-free and highly sensitive near-infrared (NIR) biomedical detection technology has attracted considerable attention. As a label-free, swift, and cost-effective analytical technique, it has demonstrated immense potential for a wide range of applications. We successfully assembled FAPbI3 near-infrared perovskite quantum dots (NIPQDs) into SiO2 shells using a rapid room-temperature atmospheric synthesis method, obtaining monodisperse FAPbI3@SiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 72%. Additionally, the incorporation of hydrophobic multi-branched trioctylphosphine oxide effectively passivated the surface defects of FAPbI3 NIPQDs and suppressed the hydrolysis rate of tetraethoxysilane, enabling the formation of a highly stable and high PLQY nanoscale-particle level within the FAPbI3@SiO2 core-shell structure. Notably, we successfully incorporated FAPbI3@SiO2 core-shell NCs onto InGaN blue chip as NIR excitation light sources for surface plasmon resonance sensing platforms, providing a novel platform for bioanalytical detection. With a detection sensitivity of 6302.5 nm/RIU, the system demonstrated high sensitivity, stability, and dependability. This achievement expands the biomedical research field's capacity for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.

Rapid room temperature synthesis and CO2 uptake performance of nanocrystalline ZIF-67 and Ni@ZIF-67

Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) are a sub-class of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and one of the best porous materials for the selective uptake of CO2. The room temperature synthesis of a series of Ni2+-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (Ni@ZIF-67) and their application in selective CO2 adsorption. The structure, morphology and surface area of Ni@ZIF-67 nanocrystals have been examined using spectroscopic and surface analytical techniques. Ni2+-doped ZIF-67 (Ni@ZIF-67), have been synthesised by doping 10, 25, and 75 % of Ni2+ ions into ZIF-67. The metal ion ratios of Ni/Co play a prominent role in controlling the particle size and surface area of Ni@ZIF-67. Moreover, the Ni@ZIF-67 shows enhanced uptake of CO2 (17.12 cm3/g (33.65 mg/g)) compared to ZIF-67 (12.60 cm3/g (24.76 mg/g)). In summary, this work shows a novel and eco-friendly technique for the synthesis of Ni@ZIF-67 for improved uptake of CO2.

A rapid-room temperature synthesis of α-cyanoacrylates, α-cyanoacrylonitriles and 4H-pyrans using water extract of pomegranate ash as catalytic media

In this article we report a sustainable and rapid-room temperature synthesis of α-cyanoacrylonitriles, α-cyanoacrylates, and 4H-pyransvia the condensation of active methylene compounds with aldehydes, and a three-component reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds/4-hydroxycoumarins, active methylene compounds and acetylene dicarboxylates in water extract of pomegranate ash (WEPA). The agro-waste-derived WEPA acts both as catalyst and aqueous reaction medium. The products of this process were separated by simple filtration and purified by recrystallization. This protocol did not require organic solvent-based work-up and column chromatography-assisted purifications. The use of renewable catalytic media, good reusability of catalyst, ease of handling, ambient and depleting resources-based catalyst free conditions, avoid of volatile organic solvents throughout the process, excellent product yields, and actual usage of waste are the highlights of this process.

Room-temperature multiple ligands-tailored SnO2 quantum dots endow in situ dual-interface binding for upscaling efficient perovskite photovoltaics with high VOC

The benchmark tin oxide (SnO2) electron transporting layers (ETLs) have enabled remarkable progress in planar perovskite solar cell (PSCs). However, the energy loss is still a challenge due to the lack of “hidden interface” control. We report a novel ligand-tailored ultrafine SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) via a facile rapid room temperature synthesis. Importantly, the ligand-tailored SnO2 QDs ETL with multi-functional terminal groups in situ refines the buried interfaces with both the perovskite and transparent electrode via enhanced interface binding and perovskite passivation. These novel ETLs induce synergistic effects of physical and chemical interfacial modulation and preferred perovskite crystallization-directing, delivering reduced interface defects, suppressed non-radiative recombination and elongated charge carrier lifetime. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.02% (0.04 cm2) and 21.6% (0.98 cm2, VOC loss: 0.336 V) have been achieved for the blade-coated PSCs (1.54 eV Eg) with our new ETLs, representing a record for SnO2 based blade-coated PSCs. Moreover, a substantially enhanced PCE (VOC) from 20.4% (1.15 V) to 22.8% (1.24 V, 90 mV higher VOC, 0.04 cm2 device) in the blade-coated 1.61 eV PSCs system, via replacing the benchmark commercial colloidal SnO2 with our new ETLs.

(Zn/Co)-zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: Room temperature synthesis and application as promising U(VI) scavengers — A comparative study

Uranium prevalence in water beyond WHO limit (30μg/l) may pose potential chemical and radiological toxicity which can cause severe health problems associated with kidney, brain, liver, heart, etc. Therefore, regular monitoring of uranium content and development of efficient remediation strategies for its removal from water resources has gained immense attention at global level. In the present work, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) based on zinc (ZIF-8), cobalt (ZIF-67) and bimetallic zinc & cobalt (Zn,Co-ZIF) using 2-methylimidazole as organic linker, were developed following a rapid room temperature synthesis, characterised for their surface and functional features using X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDX, BET and FT-IR followed by their application as adsorbents for uranium extraction. ZIFs were found to perform best at optimum adsorption parameters: pH (5.0), adsorbent dose (0.4g/l) and contact time (120min). The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity (mg/g) of three ZIFs follows the order as: ZIF-8 (781.0)>Zn,Co-ZIF (564.7)>ZIF-67 (409.1). Thermodynamic parameters confirmed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption process. Three ZIFs exhibit high adsorption efficiency and regeneration ability were explored for their practical application as packing material in the columns used in water purifiers and found to serve as competent adsorbents for treatment of uranium contaminated groundwater samples.

Surface coordination layer passivates oxidation of copper.

Owing to its high thermal and electrical conductivities, its ductility and its overall non-toxicity1-3, copper is widely used in daily applications and in industry, particularly in anti-oxidation technologies. However, many widespread anti-oxidation techniques, such as alloying and electroplating1,2, often degrade some physical properties (for example, thermal and electrical conductivities and colour) and introduce harmful elements such as chromium and nickel. Although efforts have been made to develop surface passivation technologies using organic molecules, inorganic materials or carbon-based materials as oxidation inhibitors4-12, their large-scale application has had limited success. We have previously reported the solvothermal synthesis of highly air-stable copper nanosheets using formate as a reducing agent13. Here we report that a solvothermal treatment of copper in the presence of sodium formate leads to crystallographic reconstruction of the copper surface and formation of an ultrathin surface coordination layer. We reveal that the surface modification does not affect the electrical or thermal conductivities of the bulk copper, but introduces high oxidation resistance in air, salt spray and alkaline conditions. We also develop a rapid room-temperature electrochemical synthesis protocol, with the resulting materials demonstrating similarly strong passivation performance. We further improve the oxidation resistance of the copper surfaces by introducing alkanethiol ligands to coordinate with steps or defect sites that are not protected by the passivation layer. We demonstrate that the mild treatment conditions make this technology applicable to the preparation of air-stable copper materials in different forms, including foils, nanowires, nanoparticles and bulk pastes. We expect that the technology developed in this work will help to expand the industrial applications of copper.

Novel rapid room temperature synthesis of conjugated microporous polymer for metal-free photocatalytic degradation of fluoroquinolones

The existence of Fluoroquinolones (FQs), non-biodegradable pharmacophores, in the natural environment possesses a serious threat. We herein report a novel, rapid, room-temperature synthesis of semiconducting conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) for the decontamination of four second-generation FQs, Norfloxacin, Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, and Ofloxacin. The CMP demonstrated impressive gas uptake and FQ adsorption ability. Decreased HOMO-LUMO bandgap resulted in enhanced exciton pair generation on visible-light-illumination. Additionally, a high degree of photocurrent response and suitable redox potentials of the material conjointly endorsed its almost quantitative FQ-degradation efficiency. Ofloxacin showed the best removal efficiency with 0.061 and 0.207 min−1 adsorption and degradation rate constants, respectively, one of the highest values reported. The CMP exhibited equipotent activity for other FQs as well. On increasing the concentration of the FQs or decreasing the incident photo-intensity, quantitative removal efficiencies are observed. Changing the pH of the medium from acidic to alkaline did not impart any change in catalytic activity as well. The reactive species involved viz. O2−, 1O2, etc. and their roles in the degradation process were determined through control and trapping experiments. A plausible in-depth mechanistic pathway was assessed from the FQ degradation intermediates, and the reactive catalytic species substantiating step-by-step break down of the antibiotic backbone.

La, Ni-Based Metal Oxides As Bifunctional Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions in Alkaline Medium

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the fundamental processes occurring at the air electrode of metal-air batteries and reversible fuel cells. [1,2] However, the performance of those devices is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of both OER and ORR, and by the low stability and high cost of the catalysts. Here, we will present our recent studies on the one-dimensional (1D) La, Ni-based metal oxide [3] bifunctional catalysts which are characterized by excellent OER and ORR electrocatalytic activity and outstanding stability.The catalysts were prepared by hydrothermal method and, by controlling the KOH concentration, 1D hydroxide precursors with different aspect ratios were synthesized. By using graphene (G) as the supporting material, a variety of La, Ni-based metal oxides such as Ni+La2O3/G, LaNiO3, and La2NiO4+NiO/G were synthesized, Figure 1. Electrochemical characterization of the catalysts showed that the aspect ratio of the materials has a significant effect on their electrocatalytic activity. Namely, Ni+La2O3/G nanorods have proven to be electrochemically active for ORR with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.715 V vs RHE, and for OER with 1. 574 V vs RHE at 10.0 mA cm−2 (E10) in 0.1 M KOH. The performance of Ni+La2O3/G is close to that of commercial Pt/C (E1/2=0.830V) which is the most efficient catalyst of ORR, and significantly higher than commercial RuO2 (E10=1.633 V) and IrO2 (E10=1.663 V) for OER. The unique structural, morphological and electrocatalytic properties of the Ni+La2O3/G catalysts will be presented and discussed. 1. Rapid Room-Temperature Synthesis of Mesoporous TiO2 Sub-Microspheres and Their Enhanced Light Harvesting in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Submicron sized mesoporous spheres of TiO2 have been a potential alternative to overcome the light scattering limitations of TiO2 nanoparticles in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Currently available methods for the growth of mesoporous TiO2 sub-microspheres involve long and relatively high temperature multi-stage protocols. In this work, TiO2 mesoporous sub-microspheres composed of ~5 nm anatase nanocrystallites were successfully synthesized using a rapid one-pot room-temperature CTAB-based solvothermal synthesis. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) showed that the grown structures have pure anatase phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that by reducing the surfactant/precursor concentration ratio, the morphology could be tuned from monodispersed nanoparticles into sub-micron sized mesoporous beads with controllable sizes (50–200 nm) and with good monodispersity as well. The growth mechanism is explained in terms of the competition between homogeneous nucleation/growth events versus surface energy induced agglomeration in a non-micelle CTAB-based soft templating environment. Further, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using the synthesized samples and characterized for their current-voltage characteristics. Interestingly, the DSSC prepared with 200 nm TiO2 sub-microspheres, with reduced surface area, has shown close efficiency (5.65%) to that of DSSC based on monodispersed 20 nm nanoparticles (5.79%). The results show that light scattering caused by the agglomerated sub-micron spheres could compensate for the larger surface areas provided by monodispersed nanoparticles.

Cs2CO3-Mediated Rapid Room-Temperature Synthesis of 3-Amino-2-aroyl Benzofurans and Their Copper-Catalyzed N-Arylation Reactions.

Cs2CO3 in dimethylformamide (DMF) is a perfect combination for the rapid room-temperature synthesis of 3-amino-2-aroyl benzofuran derivatives from the reaction of 2-hydroxybenzonitriles and 2-bromoacetophenones in good to excellent yields. Using this one-pot C–C and C–O bond-forming strategy, we prepared a series of 3-amino-2-aroyl benzofuran derivatives within a very short time (10–20 min). This method was also found suitable for gram-scale synthesis. Benzofurans (3) obtained by this Cs2CO3-mediated methodology were then further explored for the development of a tunable base- and ligand-free copper-catalyzed N-arylation methodology using arylboronic acids for the easy access of either mono- or bi-N-aryl derivatives of aminobenzofurans at ambient temperature. The reaction of 3 with malononitrile in DMF medium under microwave heating conditions provided highly fluorescent conjugated alkenes and novel pyridine-fused benzofurans.

A facile synthesis of hierarchically porous Cu-BTC for efficient removal of uranium(VI)

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for extraction of uranium(VI) due to their high surface area and abundant active site. However, the smaller pore size (< 2 nm) and harsh synthesis conditions (e.g., high temperature and pressure) severely hinder MOFs practical applications in some cases. Herein, we developed a simple and facile method to prepare hierarchically porous Cu-BTC that contained micropores, mesopores and macropores. The as-synthesized hierarchically porous Cu-BTC showed high uptake capacity (406.9 mg g−1) and removal efficiency (99.7%) in the capture of uranium(VI) from an aqueous solution. Thermodynamics results indicate the spontaneous nature of uranium(VI) adsorption process onto hierarchically porous Cu-BTC. In addition, Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models were found to be more suitable in describing the adsorption process of uranium(VI) than those of Freundlich and pseudo-first-order models. These results indicate that hierarchically porous MOFs obtained from rapid room-temperature synthesis are promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Four-membered red iridium(iii) complexes with Ir-S-P-S structures: rapid room-temperature synthesis and application in OLEDs.

In this work, with sulfur-containing ancillary ligands of triethylamine salts of bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-phosphinodithioic acid (omess) and bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenyl)phosphinodithioic acid (tbuss), two four-membered red iridium(iii) complexes (tfmpqz)2Ir(omess) and (tfmpqz)2Ir(tbuss) with Ir-S-P-S structures were synthesized rapidly at room temperature within 5 min, in which 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (tfmpqz) was used as the main ligand. The calculated Gibbs free energy changes of the complex formation reactions prove that they are exothermic and thermodynamically beneficial processes. Both Ir(iii) complexes show almost the same PL emissions at 624 and 623 nm with high phosphorescence quantum yields of 0.60 and 0.72, respectively. Using the two complexes as emitters, both organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) with the structure of ITO/HATCN (hexaazatriphenylenehexacabonitrile, 5 nm)/TAPC ((bis(4-(N,N-ditolylamino)phenyl)cyclohexane, 30 nm)/(tfmpqz)2Ir(omess) or (tfmpqz)2Ir(tbuss):26DCzppy (2,6-bis-(3-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine) (12 wt%, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri((3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl)benzene, 30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) achieve good performances. Particularly, due to the introduction of tert-butyl groups into the (tfmpqz)2Ir(tbuss) complex, its device exhibits better device properties with a maximum luminance of 26 184 cd m-2, maximum current efficiency of 30.24 cd A-1, maximum power efficiency of 22.61 lm W-1 and maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.50% with CIE coordinates at (0.65, 0.34).

Sulfur atom containing ligands induced rapid room temperature synthesis of red iridium(iii) complexes with Ir–S–P–S structures for OLEDs

Two red iridium(iii) complexes containing a four-membered ring Ir–S–P–S backbone were synthesized at room temperature in 5 min, and their OLEDs exhibit an EQEmax of 19.90%.

Rapid room temperature synthesis of red iridium(iii) complexes containing a four-membered Ir-S-C-S chelating ring for highly efficient OLEDs with EQE over 30.

Three red cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes (4tfmpq)2Ir(dipdtc), (4tfmpq)2Ir(dpdtc) and (4tfmpq)2Ir(Czdtc) (4tfmpq = 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline, dipdtc = N,N-diisopropyl dithiocarbamate, dpdtc = N,N-diphenyl dithiocarbamate, and Czdtc = N-carbazolyl dithiocarbamate) containing the unique four-membered Ir-S-C-S backbone ring were synthesized in five minutes at room temperature with good yields, and the Gibbs free energy calculation results indicate that all reactions are exothermic and thermodynamically favorable processes. The emission colors (λ peak = 641-611 nm), photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (Φ P = 58.3-93.0%) and bipolar properties can be effectively regulated by introducing different electron-donating substituents into the dithiocarbamate ancillary ligands. Employing these emitters, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) with double emissive layers exhibit excellent performances with a maximum brightness over 60 000 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 40.68 cd A-1, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 30.54%, and an EQE of 26.79% at the practical luminance of 1000 cd m-2. These results demonstrate that Ir(iii) complexes with sulfur-containing ligands can be rapidly synthesized at room temperature, which is key to the production of metal luminescent materials for large-scale application in highly efficient OLEDs.
