Walleye (Sander vitreus, Mitchill 1818) age and sex classification using innovative supervised and unsupervised machine learning and soft computing methodologies

Walleye (Sander vitreus) is a freshwater perciform native to Northern America and Canada with high commercial value. Stocking programs for the species are unable to supply the significant demand, creating stock management problems and an ecosystemic decline. For sustainable fisheries, the age and sex estimation are fundamental to marine stock management. Biological methods for age determination and sex estimation were used in the past, conventional observations and techniques are substituted with machine learning methods, currently underused. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of an ensemble of Machine Learning (ML) methods for age and sex classification of walleye. Based on the performance of the ensemble models, appropriate evaluation decides on the age criterion with near optimal performance using supervised and unsupervised ML algorithms on the given fish datasets. The innovation of this work lies in the fact that the species age or sex estimation is based on a paramount involvement of models that diminish the proprietary idiosyncrasies of individual methods on specific datasets. For the same models two approaches were used: applied model algorithms developed both in R and Python (Orange Rapid Application Development environment) programming language provided high accuracy percentages. Among all methodologies, the Decision Tree method provided the best classification, for age estimation with 96% and 98% accuracy using the R and Orange models respectively. For the sex classification, Random Forest performed the best using the R-model with 94% accuracy, outperformed by the AdaBoost model in Orange with 97.6% accuracy. When compared, the models which were developed in Python generally performed better than the corresponding R-models both in age and sex classification. Overall, the proposed ML approach is emphasized as a rapid economic solution to standard fish classification with high accuracy, and thus could be integrated in stock assessment for a more sustainable aquaculture management.

Design and implementation of an instrument control platform for future beamline experiments at SPring-8

BL-774 is a control, data acquisition, and online analysis platform for addressing the requirements in future beamline experiments at SPring-8-II. To date, we have achieved implementations related to “robustness and flexibility” and “configuration management”. These implementations were made possible by the two-phase development workflow. The two-phase development is characterized by a dedicated rapid application development environment that beamline scientists can use rapidly and easily in real beamline environments, and web-based graphical user interfaces that BL-774 software developers have incorporated the achievements of the beamline scientists as part of the official release of the beamline control software. BL-774 has been introduced in two beamlines to date, and we plan to implement it in more beamlines while adding more features. We plan to integrate BL-774 seamlessly with other systems that are currently under development in the facility, such as two-dimensional detector systems and SPring-8 data centers. By introducing BL-774 in conjunction with other infrastructure in the facility, more advanced experimental operations, such as feedback operations based on online data analysis or remote operations from outside the beamlines, are to be expected. This paper presents the design and implementation of BL-774 and its introduction into a beamline at SPring-8.

Investigation of Accessibility of Some Frequently Use Rapid Aplication Development Environments

The object of this article is to discuss some problems, that hav low vision developers using some frequently use rapid application development environments. Particular attention is payd to those of them, that have free versions or are use by high schools and special secondary schools. Accessibility level of main menu, submenus, settings dialog boxes, text edit tools, diagnostic and debugging addressed interface are measure. Made reference, that summary accessibility level of development environment DEV-C++ does not allow effective work by using screen readers and braille displays. As better is estimated accessibility level of Microsoft Visual Studio, but, mention may here be made of some important components (related to creating GUI and database projects) are fully inaccessible. So, blind developer can without somebody else help create console applications only. Development environment C++ Builder is closely discussed, because by working with it using screen readers and braille displays problems mentioned before does not exist. The circumstance, that this development environment is out-of-date, is not omitted, so it have not any contrivances to develop 64 bit applications and applications for Android. The article says, that software tools for developers has low level of accessibility, then applications addressed to generally use.

Preventing SQL-BasedAttacks Using Intrusion Detection System

With the advancement of technology everyone is using computer and web applications. These web applications can be easily made by using rapid application development environments by developers. But they do not consider security aspect necessary in the process of providing attractive functionalities & also they are not experts in that field. This make web applications vulnerable to several attacks. Among these attacks SQL injection is considered most dangerous vulnerability. This paper describes various approaches used by authors to prevent SQL injection attack using various methods like intrusion detection, black box testing etc.

Open Source Software Projects of the caBIG™ In Vivo Imaging Workspace Software Special Interest Group

The Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (caBIG™) program was created by the National Cancer Institute to facilitate sharing of IT infrastructure, data, and applications among the National Cancer Institute-sponsored cancer research centers. The program was launched in February 2004 and now links more than 50 cancer centers. In April 2005, the In Vivo Imaging Workspace was added to promote the use of imaging in cancer clinical trials. At the inaugural meeting, four special interest groups (SIGs) were established. The Software SIG was charged with identifying projects that focus on open-source software for image visualization and analysis. To date, two projects have been defined by the Software SIG. The eXtensible Imaging Platform project has produced a rapid application development environment that researchers may use to create targeted workflows customized for specific research projects. The Algorithm Validation Tools project will provide a set of tools and data structures that will be used to capture measurement information and associated needed to allow a gold standard to be defined for the given database against which change analysis algorithms can be tested. Through these and future efforts, the caBIG™ In Vivo Imaging Workspace Software SIG endeavors to advance imaging informatics and provide new open-source software tools to advance cancer research.

Development of a software for the design of custom-made hip prostheses using an open-source rapid application development environment.

The present work describes a technology transfer project called HIPCOM devoted to the re-engineering of the process used by a medical devices manufacturer to design custom-made hip prostheses. Although it started with insufficient support from the end-user management, a very tight scheduling and a moderate budget, the project developed into what is considered by all partners a success story. In particular, the development of the design software, called HIPCOM Interactive Design Environment (HIDE) was completed in a time shorter than any optimistic expectation. The software was quite stable since its first beta version, and once introduced at the user site it fully replaced the original procedure in less than two months. One year after the early adoption, more than 80 custom-made prostheses had been designed with HIDE and the user had reported only two bugs, both cosmetics. The scope of the present work was to report the development experience and to investigate the reasons for these positive results, with particular reference to the development procedure and the software architecture. The choice of TCL/TK as development language and the adoption of well-defined software architecture were found to be the success key factors. Other important determinants were found to be the adoption of an incremental software engineering strategy, well suited for small to medium projects and the presence in the development staff of a technology transfer expert.
