MARINE MOLLUSCA AT RHODES

ABSTRACT Marine Mollusca of Rhodes, mainly from shallow water, are presented: the total of 164 species comprises 6 species of Polyplacophora, 126 of Gastropoda, 28 of Bivalvia, and 4 species of Cephalopoda. Most species were collected on the eastern side of the island, opposite the coasts of Asia Minor. For each species found at Rhodes, documenting material is listed. Zoogeographical relationships are briefly discussed. The occurrence of 4 Indo-Pacific species in the waters of Rhodes is remarkable: they are Strombus decorus (Roeding, 1798), Erronea caurica (Linnaeus, 1758), Rapana rapiformis (Bom, 1778) and Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814).

Coral Reef Associated Gastropods in Tuticorin Coast of Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, India

Coral reef associated gastropods diversity study was undertaken in Tuticorin group of islands (Hare, Vaan and Koswari). Underwater survey was made in three quadrants (10 sq.m) in each site. A sum of 40 species of gastropods were recorded from the study area. Most of the species are commonly found in three islands. Twelve were rare viz., Ficus ficus, Colubraria muricata, Casmaria erinaceus, Natica didyma, Nerita polita, Rapana bulbosa, Purpura rudolphi, Strombus sp., Architectonica perspectiva, Cypraea tigris, Cymatium lotorium and Haustellum haustellum were reported form the study area. Species diversity and richness were found to be higher in the Vaan island.
