Multiline observations of hydrogen, helium, and carbon radio-recombination lines toward Orion A: A detailed dynamical study and direct determination of physical conditions

We present a study of hydrogen, helium, and carbon millimeter-wave radio-recombination lines (RRLs) toward 10 representative positions throughout the Orion Nebula complex, using the Yebes 40 m telescope in the Q band (31.3 GHz to 50.6 GHz) at an angular resolution of about 45″ (~0.09 pc). The observed positions include the Orion Nebula (M42) with the Orion Molecular Core 1, M43, and the Orion Molecular Core 3 bordering on NGC 1973, 1975, and 1977. While hydrogen and helium RRLs arise in the ionized gas surrounding the massive stars in the Orion Nebula complex, carbon RRLs stem from the neutral gas of the adjacent photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). The high velocity resolution (0.3 km s−1) enables us to discern the detailed dynamics of the RRL emitting neutral and ionized gas. We compare the carbon RRLs with SOFIA/upGREAT observations of the [C II] 158 µm line and IRAM 30 m observations of the 13CO (J = 2−1) line (the complete map is presented here for the first time). We observe small differences in peak velocities between the different tracers, which cannot always be attributed to geometry but potentially to shear motions. Using the far-infrared [C II] and [13C II] intensities with the carbon RRL intensities, we can infer physical conditions (electron temperature Te and electron density ne, converted to hydrogen nuclei density nH by dividing by the carbon gas-phase abundance 𝒜c ≃ 1.4 × 10−4) in the PDR gas using nonlocal thermal equilibrium excitation models. For positions in OMC1, we infer ne ≃ 20–40 cm−3 and Te ≃ 210–240 K. On the border between OMC1 and M43, we observe two gas components with ne ≃ 2 cm−3 and ne ≃ 8 cm−3, and Te ≃ 100 K and Te ≃ 150 K. In M43, we infer ne ≃ 2–3 cm−3 and Te ≃ 140 K. The Extended Orion Nebula southeast of OMC1 is characterized by ne ≃ 2 cm−3 and Te ≃ 180 K, while OMC3 has ne ≃ 1 cm−3 and Te ≃ 130 K. Our observations are sensitive enough to detect faint lines toward two positions in OMC1, in the BN/KL PDR and the PDR close to the Trapezium stars, that may be attributed to RRLs of C+ or O+. In general, the RRL line widths of both the ionized and neutral gas, as well as the [C II] and 13CO line widths, are broader than thermal, indicating significant turbulence in the interstellar medium, which transitions from super-Alfvénic and subsonic in the ionized gas to sub-Alfvénic and supersonic in the molecular gas. At the scales probed by our observations, the turbulent pressure dominates the pressure balance in the neutral and molecular gas, while in the ionized gas the turbulent pressure is much smaller than the thermal pressure.

OBSERVATIONS OF DECAMETER CARBON RADIO RECOMBINATION LINES IN SEVERAL GALACTIC DIRECTIONS Part 2. ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL CONDITIONS IN DIFFUSE CII REGIONS

Subject and Purpose. In Part 2 of the current paper, we seek to analyze the observational results of decameter carbon radio recombi- nation lines (RRLs) detected near the frequency 26 MHz through the UTR-2 radio telescope towards the S140 emission nebula and the GSH 139-03-69 super shell. These lines have proven themselves as a highly effective tool for cold, rarefied interstellar medium (ISM) diagnostics. The aim is to determine an association of line-forming regions (CII regions) with other ISM components and study physical conditions (electron temperature Te and electron density Ne) in these regions. Methods and Methodology. By iterative comparison of detected and modeled integral intensities of decameter carbon RRLs, we determine physical state ranges where recorded experimental data best fit the model values for various combinations of Te , Ne , and path lengths s. Results. It has been found that the characteristics of the detected decameter carbon RRLs are consistent with the higher-frequency data for both the S140 line of sight and other Galactic plane directions, including the GSH 139-03-69 direction. Ranges of physical con- ditions where recorded data and model values are in the best agreement have been determined, being Te 50 ÷ 100 K, Ne 0.01 cm–3, and s 10 pc — for the S140 nebula direction and its vicinity and, also, Te 50 ÷ 100 K, Ne 0.01 cm–3, and s 5 ÷ 7 pc — for the GSH 139-03-69 super shell direction. Conclusions. The obtained results indicate that the detected decameter carbon RRLs originate from CII regions associated with clouds of diffuse neutral hydrogen HI in the Galactic plane. The lines are seen against a background Galactic radio emission whose brightness temperature increases as frequency decreases.

Observations of decameter carbon radio recombination lines in several galactic directions. Part 1. Experimental study

Subject and Purpose. Since decameter carbon radio recombination lines (RRLs) were detected for the first time more than forty years ago, they have significantly extended our knowledge of the physics, kinematics and chemistry of the cold rarefied interstellar medium (ISM). A large number of these lines have been observed towards various Galactic radio sources. The present paper describes our studies of decameter carbon RRLs in such Galactic directions as the sight-lines to the S140 emission nebula and to the large volume of cold neutral hydrogen known as the GSH 139-03-69 super shell. Methods and Methodology. Observations within a 1-MHz frequency band centered at 26 MHz were performed using the UTR-2 radio telescope and a multi-channel digital correlator. The UTR-2 is still the world largest and the most sensitive low-frequency radio telescope. Results.We report the detection of decameter carbon RRL series C627α – C637α from the medium lying towards the S140 nebula. The extents of RRL forming regions have been estimated. It is suggested that RRLs in the S140 direction are formed in the local ISM lying along the line of sight. The RRL-forming region is probably associated with omnipresent diffuse neutral HI gas in the Galactic plane rather than with S140 nebula itself. Toward the GSH 139-03-69 super shell, decameter RRLs have been detected as well. Likewise, they apparently originate from the local medium lying along the sight-line. Yet, the spectrum contains a RRL component corresponding to the absorption of the cold gas of the GSH 139-03-69 itself in the ISM. Conclusions. The obtained results indicate great possibilities of decameter carbon RRLs not only for cold ISM probing but also for making a good auxiliary tool for studying large complexes of extremely cold hydrogen HI in the Galaxy.

A Q-band Line Survey toward Orion KL Using the Tianma Radio Telescope

We have conducted a line survey toward Orion KL using the Q-band receiver of the Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT), covering 34.8–50 GHz with a velocity resolution between 0.79 and 0.55 km s−1, respectively. The observations reach a sensitivity of the level of 1–8 mK, proving that the TMRT is sensitive for conducting deep-line surveys. In total, 597 Gaussian features are extracted. Among them, 177 radio recombination lines (RRLs) are identified, including 126, 40, and 11 RRLs of hydrogen, helium, and carbon, with a maximum Δn of 16, 7, and 3, respectively. The carbon RRLs are confirmed to originate from photodissociation regions with a V LSR ∼ 9 km s−1. In addition, 371 molecular transitions of 53 molecular species are identified. Twenty-one molecular species of this survey were not firmly detected in the Q band by Rizzo et al., including species such as H2CS, HCOOH, C2H5OH, CO, H2CCO, CH3CHO, CH2OCH2, HCN υ 2 = 1, and CH3OCHO υ t = 1. In particular, the vibrationally excited states of ethyl cyanide (C2H5CN υ13/υ21) are for the first time firmly detected in the Q band. NH3 (15,15) and (16,16) are identified, and they are so far the highest transitions of the NH3 inversion lines detected toward Orion KL. All of the identified lines can be reproduced by a radiative transfer model.

Purpose: The analytical review of the main results of research in the new direction of the low-frequency radio astronomy, the interstellar medium radio spectroscopy at decameter waves, which had led to astrophysical discovery, recording of the radio recombination lines in absorption for highly excited states of interstellar carbon atoms (more than 600). Design/methodology/approach: The UTR-2 world-largest broadband radio telescope of decameter waves optimally connected with the digital correlation spectrum analyzers has been used. Continuous modernization of antenna system and devices allowed increasing the analysis band from 100 kHzto 24 MHz and a number of channels from 32 to 8192. The radio telescope and receiving equipment with appropriate software allowed to have a long efficient integration time enough for a large line series simultaneously with high resolution, noise immunity and relative sensitivity. Findings: A new type of interstellar spectral lines has been discovered and studied, the interstellar carbon radio recombination lines in absorption for the record high excited atoms with principal quantum numbers greater than 1000. The line parameters (intensity, shape, width, radial velocity) and their relation ship with the interstellar medium physical parameters have been determined. The temperature of line forming regions is about 100 K, the electron concentration up to 0.1 cm–3 and the size of a line forming region is about 10 pc. For the first time, radio recombination lines were observed in absorption. They have significant broadening and are amplified by the dielectronic-like recombination mechanism and are also the lowest frequency lines in atomic spectroscopy. Conclusions: The detected low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines and their observations have become a new highly effective tool for the cold partially ionized interstellar plasma diagnostics. Using them allows obtaining the information which is not available with the other astrophysical methods. For almost half a century of their research, a large amount of hardware-methodical and astrophysical results have been obtained including a record number of Galaxy objects, where there levant lines have been recorded. The domestic achievements have stimulated many theoretical and experimental studies in other countries, but the scientific achievements of Ukrainian scientists prove the best prospects for further development of this very important area of astronomical science. The ionization fraction in OMC-2 and OMC-3

Context. The electron density (ne−) plays an important role in setting the chemistry and physics of the interstellar medium. However, measurements of ne− in neutral clouds have been directly obtained only toward a few lines of sight or they rely on indirect determinations. Aims. We use carbon radio recombination lines and the far-infrared lines of C+ to directly measure ne− and the gas temperature in the envelope of the integral shaped filament (ISF) in the Orion A molecular cloud. Methods. We observed the C102α (6109.901 MHz) and C109α (5011.420 MHz) carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope at ≈2′ resolution toward five positions in OMC-2 and OMC-3. Since the CRRLs have similar line properties, we averaged them to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra. We compared the intensities of the averaged CRRLs, and the 158 μm-[CII] and [13CII] lines to the predictions of a homogeneous model for the C+/C interface in the envelope of a molecular cloud and from this comparison we determined the electron density, temperature and C+ column density of the gas. Results. We detect the CRRLs toward four positions, where their velocity (vLSR ≈ 11 km s−1) and widths (σv ≈ 1 km s−1) confirms that they trace the envelope of the ISF. Toward two positions we detect the CRRLs, and the 158 μm-[CII] and [13CII] lines with a signal-to-noise ratio ≥5, and we find ne− = 0.65 ± 0.12 cm−3 and 0.95 ± 0.02 cm−3, which corresponds to a gas density nH ≈ 5 × 103 cm−3 and a thermal pressure of pth ≈ 4 × 105 K cm−3. We also constrained the ionization fraction in the denser portions of the molecular cloud using the HCN(1–0) and C2H(1–0) lines to x(e−) ≤ 3 × 10−6. Conclusions. The derived electron densities and ionization fraction imply that x(e−) drops by a factor ≥100 between the C+ layer and the regions probed by HCN(1–0). This suggests that electron collisional excitation does not play a significant role in setting the excitation of HCN(1–0) toward the region studied, as it is responsible for only ≈10% of the observed emission.

Hunting for the elusive methylene radical

Context. The NKaKc = 404−313 transitions of ortho-CH2 between 68 and 71 GHz were first detected toward the Orion-KL and W51 Main star-forming regions. Given their high upper level energies (225 K) above the ground state, they were naturally thought to arise in dense, hot molecular cores near newly formed stars. However, this has not been confirmed by further observations of these lines and their origin has remained unclear. Generally, there is a scarcity of observational data for CH2 and, while it is an important compound in the astrochemical context, its actual occurrence in astronomical sources is poorly constrained. Aims. In this work, we aim to investigate the nature of the elusive CH2 emission, address its association with hot cores, and examine alternative possibilities for its origin. Owing to its importance in carbon chemistry, we also extend the search for CH2 lines by observing an assortment of regions, guided by the hypothesis that the observed CH2 emission is likely to arise from the hot gas environment of photodissociation regions (PDRs). Methods. We carried out our observations first using the Kitt Peak 12 m telescope to verify the original detection of CH2 toward different positions in the central region of the Orion Molecular Cloud 1. These were followed-up by deep integrations using the higher angular resolution of the Onsala 20 m telescope. We also searched for the NKaKc = 212−303 transitions of para-CH2 between 440–445 GHz toward the Orion giant molecular cloud complex using the APEX 12 m telescope. We also obtained auxiliary data for carbon recombination lines with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope and employing archival far infrared data. Results. The present study, along with other recent observations of the Orion region reported here, rule out the possibility of an association with gas that is both hot and dense. We find that the distribution of the CH2 emission closely follows that of the [CII] 158 μm emission, while CH2 is undetected toward the hot core itself. The observations suggest, rather, that its extended emission arises from hot but dilute layers of PDRs and not from the denser parts of such regions as in the case of the Orion Bar. This hypothesis was corroborated by comparisons of the observed CH2 line profiles with those of carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs), which are well-known PDR tracers. In addition, we report the detection of the 70 GHz fine- and hyperfine structure components of ortho-CH2 toward the W51 E, W51 M, W51 N, W49 N, W43, W75 N, DR21, and S140 star-forming regions, and three of the NKaKc = 404−313 fine- and hyperfine structure transitions between 68–71 GHz toward W3 IRS5. While we have no information on the spatial distribution of CH2 in these regions, aside from that in W51, we again see a correspondence between the profiles of CH2 lines and those of CRRLs. We see a stronger CH2 emission toward the extended HII region W51 M rather than toward the much more massive and denser W51 E and N regions, which strongly supports the origin of CH2 in extended dilute gas. We also report the non-detection of the 212−303 transitions of para-CH2 toward Orion. Furthermore, using a non-LTE radiative transfer analysis, we can constrain the gas temperatures and H2 density to (163 ± 26) K and (3.4 ± 0.3) × 103 cm−3, respectively, for the 68–71 GHz ortho-CH2 transitions toward W3 IRS5, for which we have a data set of the highest quality. This analysis confirms our hypothesis that CH2 originates inwarm and dilute PDR layers. Our analysis suggests that for the excitation conditions under the physical conditions that prevail in such an environment, these lines are masering, with weak level inversion. The resulting amplification of the lines’ spontaneousemission greatly aids in their detection.

A 4–6 GHz Radio Recombination Line Survey in the Milky Way

We performed a radio recombination line (RRL) survey to construct a high-mass star-forming region (HMSFR) sample in the Milky Way based on the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer ($\textit{All-WISE}$) point source catalog. The survey was observed with the Shanghai 65m Tianma radio telescope (TMRT) covering 10 hydrogen RRL transitions ranging from H98$\alpha$ to H113$\alpha$ (corresponding to the rest frequencies of 4.5$-$6.9 GHz) simultaneously. Out of 3348 selected targets, we identified an HMSFR sample consisting of 517 sources traced by RRLs, a large fraction of this sample (486) locate near the Galactic plane ($|$$\textit{b}$$|$ $<$ 2 deg). In addition to the hydrogen RRLs, we also detected helium and carbon RRLs towards 49 and 23 sources respectively. We cross-match the RRL detections with the 6.7 methanol maser sources built up in previous works for the same target sample, as a result, 103 HMSFR sources were found to harbor both emissions. In this paper, we present the HMSFR catalog accompanied by the measured RRL line properties and a correlation with our methanol maser sample, which is believed to tracer massive stars at earlier stages. The construction of an HMSFR sample consisting of sources in various evolutionary stages indicated by different tracers is fundamental for future studies of high-mass star formation in such regions.

Integrated approach to the PDR/H ii complex by the application of carbon radio recombination lines in the millimetre range and fine-structure lines of C ii and O i

ABSTRACT We have performed self-consistent calculations to estimate the physical parameters of photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with objects, namely, NGC 2024, Orion A and W3, using far-infrared continuum emission, fine-structure lines of C ii and O i, and radio recombination lines of carbon. Typically, PDRs separate H ii regions from the molecular cloud; therefore, necessary corrections for the contribution to C ii line emission due to the H ii region are made. For that purpose, using observational data, theoretical calculations are performed to obtain the best fit for the said observations. Three parameters, angular size, θ (in arcminutes), far-ultraviolet radiation field G0, and hydrogen density nH (which gives electron density and temperature), are varied, and the sets of parameters (G0 and nH) obtained for the NGC 2024, Orion A and W3 PDRs are (7.6 × 104 and 1.2 × 105 cm−3), (2.8 × 105 and 2.3 × 105 cm−3) and (3.7 × 105 and 1.9 × 105 cm−3), respectively. The relationship between line and continuum emissions from PDRs associated with H ii regions leads us to conclude that exciting stars for the NGC 2024, Orion A and W3 H ii regions are O8–O9V, O6–O7V and O5–O6V, respectively.

Carbon radio recombination lines from gigahertz to megahertz frequencies towards Orion A

Context. The combined use of carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) and the 158μm-[CII] line is a powerful tool for the study of the energetics and physical conditions (e.g., temperature and density) of photodissociation regions (PDRs). However, there are few observational studies that exploit this synergy. Aims. Here we explore the relation between CRRLs and the 158μm-[CII] line in light of new observations and models. Methods. We present new and existing observations of CRRLs in the frequency range 0.15–230 GHz with ALMA, VLA, the GBT, Effelsberg 100m, and LOFAR towards Orion A (M 42). We complement these observations with SOFIA observations of the 158μm-[CII] line. We studied two PDRs: the foreground atomic gas, known as the Veil, and the dense PDR between the HII region and the background molecular cloud. Results. In the Veil we are able to determine the gas temperature and electron density, which we use to measure the ionization parameter and the photoelectric heating efficiency. In the dense PDR, we are able to identify a layered PDR structure at the surface of the molecular cloud to the south of the Trapezium cluster. There we find that the radio lines trace the colder portion of the ionized carbon layer, the C+/C/CO interface. By modeling the emission of the 158μm-[CII] line and CRRLs as arising from a PDR we derive a thermal pressure &gt;5 × 107 K cm−3 and a radiation field G0 ≈ 105 close to the Trapezium. Conclusions. This work provides additional observational support for the use of CRRLs and the 158μm-[CII] line as complementary tools to study dense and diffuse PDRs, and highlights the usefulness of CRRLs as probes of the C+/C/CO interface.

Direct estimation of electron density in the Orion Bar PDR from mm-wave carbon recombination lines.

A significant fraction of the molecular gas in star-forming regions is irradiated by stellar UV photons. In these environments, the electron density (n e) plays a critical role in the gas dynamics, chemistry, and collisional excitation of certain molecules. We determine n e in the prototypical strongly irradiated photodissociation region (PDR), the Orion Bar, from the detection of new millimeter-wave carbon recombination lines (mmCRLs) and existing far-IR [13Cii] hyperfine line observations. We detect 12 mmCRLs (including α, β, and γ transitions) observed with the IRAM 30m telescope, at ~ 25″ angular resolution, toward the H/H2 dissociation front (DF) of the Bar. We also present a mmCRL emission cut across the PDR. These lines trace the C+/C/CO gas transition layer. As the much lower frequency carbon radio recombination lines, mmCRLs arise from neutral PDR gas and not from ionized gas in the adjacent Hii region. This is readily seen from their narrow line profiles (Δv = 2.6 ± 0.4 km s-1) and line peak velocities (ν LSR = +10.7 ± 0.2 km s-1). Optically thin [13Cii] hyperfine lines and molecular lines - emitted close to the DF by trace species such as reactive ions CO+ and HOC+ - show the same line profiles. We use non-LTE excitation models of [13Cii] and mmCRLs and derive n e = 60 - 100 cm-3 and T e = 500 - 600 K toward the DF. The inferred electron densities are high, up to an order of magnitude higher than previously thought. They provide a lower limit to the gas thermal pressure at the PDR edge without using molecular tracers. We obtain P th ≥ (2 - 4)·108 cm-3 K assuming that the electron abundance is equal to or lower than the gas-phase elemental abundance of carbon. Such elevated thermal pressures leave little room for magnetic pressure support and agree with a scenario in which the PDR photoevaporates.

A high-resolution study of carbon radio recombination lines towards Cassiopeia A

Carbon Radio Recombination Lines trace the interface between molecular and atomic gas. We present GMRT observations of Carbon Radio Recombination Lines (CRRL), C$\alpha$244-C$\alpha$250 towards Cassiopeia A. We use a novel technique of stacking the emission lines in the visibility domain to obtain, for the first time, sub-pc resolution optical depth maps of these CRRLs. The emission shows a wide range of spatial and velocity structures, some of which are unresolved within our synthesis beam of 0.29 pc and velocity channel of 0.55 km/s. These variations in the emission optical depth and line width are indicative of inhomogeneity and fragmentation in the intervening Perseus Arm gas. We compare the distribution of the CRRL emission with that of diffuse and dense molecular gas using existing CO and H$_2$CO studies. We find that the CO emission in the -47 km/s Perseus Arm component is primarily concentrated along an elongated structure detected in our CRRL maps, to the south of which lies the high-density molecular clumps traced by H$_2$CO. This spatial distribution of CRRL and molecular tracers is similar to what one would observe for a Photo Dissociation Region (PDR). In the other Perseus Arm component centered at -37 km/s, there is evidence for high column density (N$_{H_2}$ ~ $10^{22}$cm$^{-2}$) molecular clumps embedded in diffuse CO as well as CRRL emission towards the center of Cassiopeia A. We propose that the CRRL emissions coincident with molecular tracers originates from the line of sight integrated component of the C$^{+}$ envelope of the molecular gas.

Ionization Profiles of Galactic H ii Regions

Abstract Using Green Bank Telescope radio recombination line (RRL) data, we analyze the role of leaking radiation from H ii regions in maintaining the ionization of the interstellar medium (ISM). We observed a sample of eight Galactic H ii regions of various sizes, morphologies, and luminosities. For each region, the hydrogen RRL intensity decreases roughly as a power-law with the distance from the center of the region. This suggests that radiation leaking from the H ii region is responsible for the majority of surrounding ionized gas producing RRL emission. Our results further indicate that the hydrogen RRL intensity appears to be fundamentally related to the H ii region sizes traced by their photodissociation regions, such that physically smaller H ii regions show a steeper decrease in intensity with an increasing distance from the region centers. As a result, giant H ii regions may have a much larger effect in maintaining the ionization of the ISM. For six of the eight observed H ii regions, we find a decrease in the 4He+/H+ abundance ratio with an increasing distance, indicating that He-ionizing photons are being absorbed within the ionization front of the H ii region. There is enhanced carbon RRL emission toward directions with strong continuum background, suggesting that the carbon emission is amplified by stimulated emission.

Survey of Ionized Gas of the Galaxy, Made with the Arecibo Telescope (SIGGMA): Inner Galaxy Data Release

Abstract The Survey of Ionized Gas of the Galaxy, Made with the Arecibo telescope (SIGGMA) provides a fully sampled view of the radio recombination line (RRL) emission from the portion of the Galactic plane visible with Arecibo. Observations use the Arecibo L-band Feed Array, which has a FWHM beam size of 3.′4. Twelve hydrogen RRLs from H163α to H174α are located within the instantaneous bandpass from 1225 MHz to 1525 MHz. We provide here cubes of average (“stacked”) RRL emission for the inner Galaxy region 32° ≤ ℓ ≤ 70°, , with an angular resolution of 6′. The stacked RRL rms at 5.1 km s−1 velocity resolution is ∼0.65 mJy beam−1, making this the most sensitive large-scale fully sampled RRL survey extant. We use SIGGMA data to catalog 319 RRL detections in the direction of 244 known H ii regions, and 108 new detections in the direction of 79 H ii region candidates. We identify 11 carbon RRL emission regions, all of which are spatially coincident with known H ii regions. We detect RRL emission in the direction of 14 of the 32 supernova remnants (SNRs) found in the survey area. This RRL emission frequently has the same morphology as the SNRs. The RRL velocities give kinematic distances in agreement with those found in the literature, indicating that RRLs may provide an additional tool to constrain distances to SNRs. Finally, we analyze the two bright star-forming complexes: W49 and W51. We discuss the possible origins of the RRL emission in directions of SNRs W49B and W51C.

Low-Frequency Carbon Recombination Lines in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex

AbstractWe detail tentative detections of low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines from within the Orion molecular cloud complex observed at 99–129 MHz. These tentative detections include one alpha transition and one beta transition over three locations and are located within the diffuse regions of dust observed in the infrared at 100 μm, the Hα emission detected in the optical, and the synchrotron radiation observed in the radio. With these observations, we are able to study the radiation mechanism transition from collisionally pumped to radiatively pumped within the H ii regions within the Orion molecular cloud complex.

Mapping low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines towards Cassiopeia A at 340, 148, 54, and 43 MHz

Quantitative understanding of the interstellar medium requires knowledge of its physical conditions. Low frequency carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) trace cold interstellar gas, and can be used to determine its physical conditions (e.g., electron temperature and density). In this work we present spatially resolved observations of the low frequency ($\leq390$ MHz) CRRLs centered around C$268\alpha$, C$357\alpha$, C$494\alpha$ and C$539\alpha$ towards Cassiopeia A on scales of $\leq1.2$ pc. We compare the spatial distribution of CRRLs with other ISM tracers. This comparison reveals a spatial offset between the peak of the CRRLs and other tracers, which is very characteristic for photodissociation regions and that we take as evidence for CRRLs being preferentially detected from the surfaces of molecular clouds. Using the CRRLs we constrain the gas electron temperature and density. These constraints on the gas conditions suggest variations of less than a factor of two in pressure over $\sim1$ pc scales, and an average hydrogen density of $200$-$470$ cm$^{-3}$. From the electron temperature and density maps we also constrain the ionized carbon emission measure, column density and path length. Based on these, the hydrogen column density is larger than $10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, with a peak of $\sim4\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ towards the South of Cassiopeia A. Towards the southern peak the line of sight length is $\sim40$ pc over a $\sim2$ pc wide structure, which implies that the gas is a thin surface layer on a large (molecular) cloud that is only partially intersected by Cassiopeia A. These observations highlight the utility of CRRLs as tracers of low density extended HI and CO-dark gas halo's around molecular clouds.

Low-frequency Carbon Radio Recombination Lines. II. The Diffuse Interstellar Medium

Abstract In the second paper of the series, we have modeled low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) from the interstellar medium. Anticipating the Low Frequency Array survey of Galactic CRRLs, we focus our study on the physical conditions of the diffuse, cold neutral medium. We have used the improved departure coefficients computed in the first paper of the series to calculate line-to-continuum ratios. The results show that the line width and integrated optical depths of CRRLs are sensitive probes of the electron density, gas temperature, and emission measure of the cloud. Furthermore, the ratio of CRRL to the [C ii] at the 158 μm line is a strong function of the temperature and density of diffuse clouds. Guided by our calculations, we analyze CRRL observations and illustrate their use with data from the literature.

Low-frequency Carbon Radio Recombination Lines. I. Calculations of Departure Coefficients

Abstract In the first paper of this series, we study the level population problem of recombining carbon ions. We focus our study on high quantum numbers, anticipating observations of carbon radio recombination lines to be carried out by the Low Frequency Array. We solve the level population equation including angular momentum levels with updated collision rates up to high principal quantum numbers. We derive departure coefficients by solving the level population equation in the hydrogenic approximation and including low-temperature dielectronic capture effects. Our results in the hydrogenic approximation agree well with those of previous works. When comparing our results including dielectronic capture, we find differences that we ascribe to updates in the atomic physics (e.g., collision rates) and to the approximate solution method of the statistical equilibrium equations adopted in previous studies. A comparison with observations is discussed in an accompanying article, as radiative transfer effects need to be considered.

LOFAR observations of decameter carbon radio recombination lines towards Cassiopeia A

We present a study of carbon radio recombination lines towards Cassiopeia A using LOFAR observations in the frequency range 10-33 MHz. Individual carbon $\alpha$ lines are detected in absorption against the continuum at frequencies as low as 16 MHz. Stacking several C$\alpha$ lines we obtain detections in the 11-16 MHz range. These are the highest signal-to-noise measurements at these frequencies. The peak optical depth of the C$\alpha$ lines changes considerably over the 11-33 MHz range with the peak optical depth decreasing from 4$\times10^{-3}$ at 33 MHz to 2$\times10^{-3}$ at 11 MHz, while the line width increases from 20 km s$^{-1}$ to 150 km s$^{-1}$. The combined change in peak optical depth and line width results in a roughly constant integrated optical depth. We interpret this as carbon atoms close to local thermodynamic equilibrium. In this work we focus on how the 11-33 MHz carbon radio recombination lines can be used to determine the gas physical conditions. We find that the ratio of the carbon radio recombination lines to that of the 158 $\mu$m [CII] fine-structure line is a good thermometer, while the ratio between low frequency carbon radio recombination lines provides a good barometer. By combining the temperature and pressure constraints with those derived from the line width we are able to constrain the gas properties (electron temperature and density) and radiation field intensity. Given the 1$\sigma$ uncertainties in our measurements these are; $T_{e}\approx68$-$98$ K, $n_{e}\approx0.02$-$0.035$ cm$^{-3}$ and $T_{r,100}\approx1500$-$1650$ K. Despite challenging RFI and ionospheric conditions, our work demonstrates that observations of carbon radio recombination lines in the 10-33 MHz range can provide insight into the gas conditions.
