The use of Harmonic Balance in Wave Concept Iterative Method for Nonlinear Radio Frequency Circuit Simulation

This paper presents the birth of the new hybrid method for the non-linear Radio frequency circuits’ simulation. This method is based on the combination of the wave concept iterative procedure (WCIP) and the harmonic balance (HB) for their advantages. It consists also the development of an application based on this method for the simulation of nonlinear planar radio frequency circuits. The simulation of the Radio frequency diode implemented in micro-strip line is done. The validations are obtained by the comparison of the results obtained by our new hybrid method and Harmonic Balance under Advanced Design System (ADS) software.

Analysis and Simulation of AC-Biased TES Circuits

We systematically study the analysis and simulation of ac-biased superconductor transition-edge sensor (TES) circuits. In these ac-biased circuits, the current and voltage of the TES experience large swings in both directions, and small-signal analysis around a dc steady state does not apply. To understand their electrical and thermal behavior, we rely on concepts and techniques from radio-frequency circuit simulation and introduce the periodic steady state and perform periodic ac analysis. We also construct TES device models based on a comprehensive two-fluid physical model and investigate the behavior of ac-biased TES circuits using advanced circuit simulators. By relating our findings to results for the analysis of dc-biased TES circuits, we give appropriate definitions for the current and temperature sensitivity of the TES in ac-biased circuits. Our work not only builds a rigorous foundation for theoretical analysis of ac-biased TES circuits but also introduces powerful simulation techniques valuable for their design and research.

Computation of the 1-dB compression point in radio frequency amplifier circuits using moments analysis

Nonlinear distortion analysis is one of the most computationally challenging aspects in the simulation of radio frequency circuits. Recently, an efficient moments-based approach to determine the third-order intercept point from the general harmonic balance equations, without the need to perform a harmonic balance simulation, was presented. In this article, the efficient computation of another important performance figure of merit, that of the 1-dB compression point, using moments analysis is presented. In addition, the computations of the second- and fifth-order intercept points are also presented. As a result, moments analysis becomes a comprehensive approach for quantifying nonlinear distortion using several key distortion figures of merit with a significant speed-up over traditional harmonic balance methods. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monotone iterative method for numerical solution of nonlinear ODEs in MOSFET RF circuit simulation

In this paper, we model the metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) radio frequency (RF) circuit as a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Then we solve them with the waveform relaxation method, the monotone iterative method, and Runge–Kutta method directly in time domain. With the monotone iterative method, we prove that each decoupled and transformed circuit equation converges monotonically. In comparison with the HSPICE outputs, results calculated with our method are stable and robust in both the time and frequency domains. Convergence properties for the monotone iterative and outer iterative loops are also presented and discussed. This method provides an alternative in the time domain numerical solution of MOSFET RF circuit equations.

Applications of the Multi-Interval Chebyshev Collocation Method in RF Circuit Simulation

In this paper, we discuss the multi-interval Chebyshev (MIC) method for analog and radio-frequency (RF) circuit simulations. The method has been applied in a wide variety of circuit analyses including periodic steady-state, time-varying small signal, and cyclostationary noise analyses for both driven and autonomous circuits. In contrast to traditional analog/RF circuit simulations using either low-order time-domain integration methods or harmonic balance methods, we show that the MIC method can efficiently achieve high accuracy on strongly nonlinear circuits possessing waveforms with rapid transitions. In addition, it has the same flexibility in simulating frequency-dependent components as the harmonic balance methods but can use similar preconditioning strategies and matrix-implicit Krylov-subspace solvers as time-domain techniques, leading to good convergence on nonlinear problems.

A simple subcircuit extension of the BSIM3v3 model for CMOS RF design

An accurate and simple lumped-element extension of the BSIM3v3 MOSFET model for small-signal radio-frequency circuit simulation is proposed and investigated. Detailed comparisons of the small-signal y and s parameters with both two-dimensional device simulations and measurement data are presented. A procedure is developed to extract the values of two lumped resistors-the only added elements. The non-quasi-static and substrate effects can be modeled with these two resistors to significantly improve the model accuracy up to a frequency of 10 GHz, which is about 70% of the f/sub T/ of the 0.5 /spl mu/m NMOS transistor.
