First-ever fusion of high entropy alloy (HEA) with glass: Enhancing of critical properties of zinc-tellurite glass through TiZrNbHfTaOx incorporation

Many oxide additives have historically been used to enhance the radiation shielding properties of glasses, yet the potential of high-entropy oxides (HEOs), which have gained popularity in material science for their unique properties, has not been explored in this context. This study is the first to investigate the radiation shielding capabilities of Zinc-Tellurite glass infused with High Entropy Oxide (HEO), specifically utilizing the novel attributes of a synthesized TiZrNbHfTa. In this study, the nuclear shielding properties of newly fabricated Zinc-Tellurite glasses doped with TiZrNbHfTaOx with a composition (25ZnO·75TeO2)100-x. (TiZrNbHfTaOx)x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 mol%) were studied. Through the synthesis of a TiZrNbHfTa HEA and its integration into glass structure, we have developed a series of novel materials with enhanced protective properties against both gamma-ray and neutron radiation. Experimental results demonstrate that the HEO-infused glass, particularly the HEC1-4 composition, significantly surpasses traditional shielding materials in neutron attenuation, evidenced by its superior effective neutron removal cross-section. Additionally, the HEC1-4 glass demonstrates improved gamma-ray shielding capabilities, with increased mass attenuation coefficients and decreased half-value layers, indicating a higher capacity for photon interaction and absorption. It can be concluded that the incorporation of High Entropy Alloys into glass matrices not only opens a new frontier in radiation shielding materials but also provides a versatile and effective solution with considerable potential for enhancing safety measures in radiation-prone environments.

Electrical and gamma ray shielding properties of phospho-tellurite glasses doped with alkali and transition metal oxides

This article presents investigated results on physical, electrical and gamma radiation shielding properties of glasses of composition, (P2O5)0.25-(TeO2)0.5-x-(Na2O)0.1- (ZnO)0.15-(CoO)x (x= 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 030 and 0.35) were synthesized by melt quenching procedure. After confirming non-crystallinity, density was measured and found it to be decreased with increase of CoO concentration in the range 4.0370 gm/cm3 - 3.5673 gm/cm3. Molar volume, mean distance between TMIs, small polaron radius, oxygen packing density and field strength were estimated. Conductivity was measured in the temperature range 303K -663K. High temperature conductivity is found to be varied as per Mott’s (SPH) model. High temperature activation energy is found to be increased with CoO content. Low temperature conductivity variation has been analyzed using Mott’s (VRH) model. Gamma ray shielding parameters were evaluated using Phy-X/PSD software for the energy range 0.005 MeV-15 MeV. The mass and linear attenuation coefficients were found to decrease with CoO content and photon energy. Half and tenth value layers increased with increase of mole fractions of CoO. All the observed shielding parameters are superior to those reported previously for other glasses. The glass with x=0.10 is best suited for the utility of gamma shielding at low energy.

Construction of mathematical equation to predict the densities of BaO - B2O3 - Bi2O3 glass system using the percentage weights of its constituents

Glass systems are now a trending topic of research for radiation shielding. It takes time to fabricate the glass and then to measure its density, following which other properties are determined. Some chemicals’ manufacturers write on the chemical containers the health effect of such chemicals if they get contact with eyes or skin and when inhaled. It’s therefore of great importance to devise non experimental technique to study the physical and shielding properties of glass systems. The aim of this work is to construct a mathematical equation capable of reproducing and predicting densities of glasses in the system given by “yBaO - xBi2O3 - (100 – x -y) B2O3”, where (10 ≤ y ≤ 24 wt% and 0 ≤ x ≤ 100 – y) wt%) so, as to avoid the repetitive fabrication of each member of this system and to cut the cost of fabrication and to assure safety from the chemical exposure. We made used of the existing samples to study the nature of the densities in such system and came up with an equation, using which the densities could be reproduced and some others could be predicted by deciding the weight percentages of the constituent chemicals. The formula has a minimum percentage accuracy of 97.4 %. The use of this formula for studying radiation shielding properties of glasses in this system is therefore of great importance.

Fast Neutron and Gamma-Ray Attenuation Properties of Some HMO Tellurite-Tungstate-Antimonate Glasses: Impact of Sm3+ Ions

Characteristics of tellurite-tungstate-antimonate glasses containing heavy metal oxide were investigated in detail using two methods: the MCNPX Monte Carlo code and the Phy-X/PSD platform. The influence of Sm2O3, translocating with TeO2 at ratios of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1, and 1.5 mol% on radiation shielding properties of glasses, was set forth with five glass structures determined according to the (75-x)TeO2-15Sb2O3-10WO3-xSm2O3 glass composition. Densities of the glasses were prepared by doping a low ratio of Sm2O3 that varied between 5.834 and 5.898 g/cm3. Sample densities, which have an important role in determining radiation shielding character, increased depending on the increase in Sm2O3 concentration. Effective removal cross-section (∑R) values against fast neutrons, as well as linear and mass attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, mean free path, variation of effective atomic number against photon energy, exposure, and energy built-up factors, were simulated with the help of these two methods. As a result of these estimates, it can be concluded that values obtained using both methods are consistent with each other. From the obtained values, it can be concluded that the SM1.5 sample containing 1.5 mol% would have the most efficient role in radiation shielding. An increase of Sm2O3 resulted in a significant increase in linear and mass attenuation coefficients and effective removal cross-section values belonging to fast neutrons and, in addition, resulted in a decrease in the half value layer. Doping HMO glasses with Sm2O3 was observed to contribute directly to the development of radiation shielding properties of the glass.

Influence of RE oxides (Eu3+, Sm3+, Nd3+) on gamma radiation shielding properties of lead fluoroborate glasses

Authors report the change in lead fluoroborate glass properties with change in RE2O3 (RE = Eu, Sm, Nd) chemical composition. The RE2O3 exhibited improvement in the radiation shielding properties of the glass samples. The gamma rays shielding capabilities of the samples were studied using the WinXcom software (for Eu2O3, Sm2O3 doped glasses) and Monte Carlo simulation (for Nd2O3 doped glasses). The results exhibited that the mass attenuation coefficient (μm), effective atomic number (Zeff), and half value layer (HVL) depends on the concentration of RE2O3 and addition of the same significantly increased the shielding capabilities of the glass samples against gamma rays. The increase in photon energy revealed the decrease in radiation shielding properties. The reported density and radiation attenuation properties of RE2O3 doped lead fluoroborate glasses are predominant in radiation shielding applications which will be useful in high strength structures. Of all the glass samples 2.5 mol% of Eu2O3, Sm2O3 and Nd2O3 doped glasses showed enhanced shielding properties.

Simulation of radiation shielding properties of glasses contain PbO

Radiation shielding characteristics of lead glass systems: PbO-B2O3, PbO-SiO2, PbO-GeO2 and PbO-WO3-TeO2 have been calculated by simulation. Mass attenuation coefficients of the glass systems are simulated using MCNP5 code in the photon energy ranging from 0.015 to 10 MeV. The simulation results are compared with theoretical XCOM results. It is found that the numerical results using the MCNP5 code are in good agreement with XCOM data. Various shielding parameters such as effective atomic number, mean free path and half value layer were determined using the obtained mass attenuation coefficients and standard formulae. The Half value layer of all glass samples was compared with those of some commercially-available shielding glasses developed by SCHOTT Co. Probability of partial interaction of gamma-ray with glass systems at different energies at intermediate region of gamma energy (662–1229 keV) is computed and reflected that Compton scattering interaction has been dominated interaction contributed to the different total attenuation coefficients in each of glass matrices. Shielding properties of the present glass systems are mainly influenced by the chemical composition as well as the density of the samples. The results showed that increasing the PbO content of all glass systems can improve the radiation shielding properties.

Effect of Bi2O3 on radiation shielding properties of glasses from coal fly ash

In the present work, the glasses were prepared by using sub-bituminous fly ash (SFA) and B2O3 as raw material, Na2O as fluxing agent. The effects of various Bi2O3 concentration were investigated of the xBi2O3: (60-x)B2O3: 10Na2O: 30SFA (where x = 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 by wt.%) by the melt quenching technique. The radiation shielding properties were measure by various photon energies from 220-662 keV, and compared between theoretical and experimental properties of the mass attenuation coefficients (µm), the effective atomic numbers (Zeff) and the effective electron densities (Ne). All results were similar trend and good agreement between theoretical and experimental values. They were increased with increasing of Bi2O3 concentration, and decreased with higher gamma rays energy. The half value layer (HVL) of glass samples demonstrated that the glasses had good shielding properties. The best glass in this work is 35wt.% of Bi2O3 concentration and better than barite concrete.

Optical, Spectral, and Radiation-Shielding Properties of High-Lead Phosphate Glasses

The spectral, optical, physicochemical, radiative, and radiation-shielding properties of glasses in the PbO-P2O5-R m O n system (where R m O n stands for Group I–V element oxides) are investigated as a function of their composition. The composition of a colorless radiation-resistant high-lead glass suitable for production on a semicommercial scale is determined. The properties and optical quality parameters of the glass are studied. The new phosphate glass is a lead metaphosphate containing aluminum, alkali, and alkaline-earth oxides. This glass is resistant to radiation at doses up to 107 R and has an optical transmission edge at 360 nm. The coefficient of absorption of gamma radiation for the new glass is larger than those of dense silicate flints. According to the optical parameters, the new glass lies between dense flints and dense barium flints in the Abbe diagram and compensates for the absence of the latter flints in catalogues of radiation-resistant glasses.
