Estimation of Forest Growing Stock Volume with Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Comparison of Model-Fitting Methods

Satellite-based estimation of forest variables including forest biomass relies on model-based approaches since forest biomass cannot be directly measured from space. Such models require ground reference data to adapt to the local forest structure and acquired satellite data. For wide-area mapping, such reference data are too sparse to train the biomass retrieval model and approaches for calibrating that are independent from training data are sought. In this study, we compare the performance of one such calibration approach with the traditional regression modelling using reference measurements. The performance was evaluated at four sites representative of the major forest biomes in Europe focusing on growing stock volume (GSV) prediction from time series of C-band Sentinel-1 and Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS-2 PALSAR-2) backscatter measurements. The retrieval model was based on a Water Cloud Model (WCM) and integrated two forest structural functions. The WCM trained with plot inventory GSV values or calibrated with the aid of auxiliary data products correctly reproduced the trend between SAR backscatter and GSV measurements across all sites. The WCM-predicted backscatter was within the range of measurements for a given GSV level with average model residuals being smaller than the range of the observations. The accuracy of the GSV estimated with the calibrated WCM was close to the accuracy obtained with the trained WCM. The difference in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) was less than 5% units. This study demonstrates that it is possible to predict biomass without providing reference measurements for model training provided that the modelling scheme is physically based and the calibration is well set and understood.

Retrieval of snow and soil properties for forward radiative transfer modeling of airborne Ku-band SAR to estimate snow water equivalent: the Trail Valley Creek 2018/19 snow experiment

Abstract. Accurate snow information at high spatial and temporal resolution is needed to support climate services, water resource management, and environmental prediction services. However, snow remains the only element of the water cycle without a dedicated Earth observation mission. The snow scientific community has shown that Ku-band radar measurements provide quality snow information with its sensitivity to snow water equivalent and the wet/dry state of snow. With recent developments of tools like the snow micropenetrometer (SMP) to retrieve snow microstructure data in the field and radiative transfer models like the Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer (SMRT) model, it becomes possible to properly characterize the snow and how it translates into radar backscatter measurements. An experiment at Trail Valley Creek (TVC), Northwest Territories, Canada, was conducted during the winter of 2018/19 in order to characterize the impacts of varying snow geophysical properties on Ku-band radar backscatter at a 100 m scale. Airborne Ku-band data were acquired using the University of Massachusetts radar instrument. This study shows that it is possible to calibrate SMP data to retrieve statistical information on snow geophysical properties and properly characterize a representative snowpack at the experiment scale. The tundra snowpack measured during the campaign can be characterize by two layers corresponding to a rounded snow grain layer and a depth hoar layer. Using RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X data, soil background roughness properties were retrieved (msssoil=0.010±0.002), and it was shown that a single value could be used for the entire domain. Microwave snow grain size polydispersity values of 0.74 and 1.11 for rounded and depth hoar snow grains, respectively, were retrieved. Using the geometrical optics surface backscatter model, the retrieved effective soil permittivity increased from C-band (εsoil=2.47) to X-band (εsoil=2.61) and to Ku-band (εsoil=2.77) for the TVC domain. Using the SMRT and the retrieved soil and snow parameterizations, an RMSE of 2.6 dB was obtained between the measured and simulated Ku-band backscatter values when using a global set of parameters for all measured sites. When using a distributed set of soil and snow parameters, the RMSE drops to 0.9 dB. This study thus shows that it is possible to link Ku-band radar backscatter measurements to snow conditions on the ground using a priori knowledge of the snow conditions to retrieve snow water equivalent (SWE) at the 100 m scale.

On the physical mechanism causing strongly enhanced radar backscatter in C-Band SAR images of convective rain over the ocean

ABSTRACT Radar signatures of rain over the ocean have a complex structure since they receive contributions from surface scattering and volume scattering and attenuation by hydrometeors in the atmosphere. These contributions overlap and are often difficult to detangle. While most of the mechanisms contributing to radar signatures of rain over the ocean are well understood, there is one remaining issue that has been discussed controversially in the literature for a long time. It is the question what scattering mechanism causes the areas of strongly enhanced radar backscatter, also called ‘bright blobs’ or ‘bright patches’, which are frequently observed on spaceborne C-band SAR images acquired over tropical and subtropical oceans in the presence of convective rain. Recently, papers have been published in which it is hypothesized that they are caused by radar backscattering at hydrometeors in the melting layer (ML). Although many observational facts seem to support this hypothesis, there exists one strong argument against this hypothesis: It is the observation that the position of the ML radar signatures (bright blob) in the SAR image is not shifted in anti-range from the position, where the rain column hits the sea surface. This absence of a shift is observed when 1) comparing Sentinel-1 SAR images on which rain cells are visible with quasi-concurrently acquired weather radar images and 2) when inter-comparing of SAR images of rain cells acquired concurrently at different frequencies and polarizations. Based on these observations, we discard the hypothesis that the bright blobs are due to volume scattering at hydrometeors in the ML and hypothesize instead that they are due to scattering at splash products at the sea surface. This hypothesis is supported by radar backscattering measurements carried out in the laboratory and from a shore-based platform, which show that, at C-and X-band, strong rain can give rise to strong radar returns also at cross-polarization.

Mini-RF S-band Radar Characterization of a Lunar South Pole–crossing Tycho Ray: Implications for Sampling Strategies

One of the youngest features on the Moon is Tycho, an 85 km diameter impact crater with a vast ray system that spans much of the lunar nearside. As such, it serves as an important stratigraphic marker for the Moon. One of Tycho’s longest rays crosses the South Pole, where it intersects several candidate landing sites for NASA’s Artemis III mission, which intends to return new lunar samples. Identification of ray-related effects are thus important to understand the provenance of collected material. To help contextualize sampling strategies, here we characterize the South Pole–crossing Tycho ray using monostatic S-band radar observations from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Miniature Radio Frequency instrument. We found that the ray is a ∼15 km wide radar-bright feature extending at least ∼1600 km from Tycho. Polarimetric analysis revealed that the measured radar backscatter is consistent with a terrain enhanced in centimeter-to-decimeter-scale scatterers. Moreover, we found that the abundance of these scatterers likely decreases with distance from the primary crater, suggesting there may be less Tycho-disturbed material, in particular, poleward of 85°S, where the candidate landing sites are located. Nevertheless, we identified craters along the ray and, importantly, within the Haworth candidate landing site that exhibit secondary crater characteristics, such as radar-bright, asymmetric ejecta deposits. We showed, based on solar illumination and topographic slopes, that the likely Tycho-related secondaries within Haworth are accessible by landed missions. Exploration of this site may thus directly sample Tycho-disturbed material, including a nearby permanently shadowed region, providing new insights into lunar surface processes.

Retrieval of snow water equivalent from dual-frequency radar measurements: using time series to overcome the need for accurate a priori information

Abstract. Measurements of radar backscatter are sensitive to snow water equivalent (SWE) across a wide range of frequencies, motivating proposals for satellite missions to measure global distributions of SWE. However, radar backscatter measurements are also sensitive to snow stratigraphy, to microstructure, and to ground surface roughness, complicating SWE retrieval. A number of recent advances have created new tools and datasets with which to address the retrieval problem, including a parameterized relationship between SWE, microstructure, and radar backscatter, and methods to characterize ground surface scattering. Although many algorithms also introduce external (prior) information on SWE or snow microstructure, the precision of the prior datasets used must be high in some cases in order to achieve accurate SWE retrieval. We hypothesize that a time series of radar measurements can be used to solve this problem and demonstrate that SWE retrieval with acceptable error characteristics is achievable by using previous retrievals as priors for subsequent retrievals. We demonstrate the accuracy of three configurations of prior information: using a global SWE model, using the previously retrieved SWE, and using a weighted average of the model and the previous retrieval. We assess the robustness of the approach by quantifying the sensitivity of the SWE retrieval accuracy to SWE biases artificially introduced in the prior. We find that the retrieval with the weighted averaged prior demonstrates SWE accuracy better than 20 % and an error increase of only 3 % relative RMSE per 10 % change in prior bias; the algorithm is thus both accurate and robust. This finding strengthens the case for future radar-based satellite missions to map SWE globally.

Soil moisture retrieval from Sentinel-1 using a first-order radiative transfer model—A case-study over the Po-Valley

Soil moisture is an important variable controlling many land surface processes and is used to quantify precipitation, drought, flooding, irrigation and other factors that influence decision making and risk-assessment. This paper presents the retrieval of high resolution (∼1 km) soil moisture data from Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter measurements using a new bistatic radiative transfer modeling framework (RT1) previously only tested for scatterometer data. The model is applied over a diverse set of landcover types across the entire Po-Valley in Italy over a 4-year time-period from 2016 to 2019. The performance of the soil moisture retrievals is analyzed with respect to the ERA5-Land reanalysis dataset. The model parameterisation and retrieval method are chosen such as to constitute a trade-off between a physically plausible and a computationally feasible modeling approach. The results demonstrate the potential of RT1 for the retrieval of high-resolution soil moisture data from SAR time series.

SVM-Based Sea Ice Extent Retrieval Using Multisource Scatterometer Measurements

This study aims to explore the joint usage of multisource scatterometer measurements in polar sea water and ice discrimination. All radar backscatter measurements from current operating satellite scatterometers are considered, including the C-band ASCAT scatterometer on board the MetOp series satellites, the Ku-band scatterometer on board the HY-2B satellite (HSCAT), and the Ku-band scatterometer on board the CFOSAT satellite (CSCAT). By performing seven experiments that use the same support vector machine (SVM) classifier method but with different input data, we find that the SVM model with all available HSCAT, CSCAT, and ASCAT scatterometer data as inputs gives the best performance. In addition to the SVM outputs, we employ the image erosion/dilation techniques and area growth method to reduce misclassifications of sea water and ice. The sea ice extent obtained in this study shows a good agreement with the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) sea ice concentration data from the years 2019 to 2021. More specifically, the sea ice areas are closer to the sea ice areas calculated using 15% as the threshold for NSIDC sea ice concentration data in both Arctic and Antarctic. The sea ice edges acquired by the multisource scatterometer show a close correlation with sea ice edges from the Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. In addition, we found that the coverage of multisource scatterometer data in a half-day is usually above 97%, and more importantly, the sea ice areas obtained on the basis of half-day and daily multisource scatterometer data are very close to each other. The presented work can serve as guidance on the usage of all available scatterometer measurements in sea ice monitoring.

Green Area Index and Soil Moisture Retrieval in Maize Fields Using Multi-Polarized C- and L-Band SAR Data and the Water Cloud Model

The green area index (GAI) and the soil moisture under the canopy are two key variables for agricultural monitoring. The current most accurate GAI estimation methods exploit optical data and are rendered ineffective in the case of frequent cloud cover. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) measurements could allow the remote estimation of both variables at the parcel level, on a large scale and regardless of clouds. In this study, several methods were implemented and tested for the simultaneous estimation of both variables using the water cloud model (WCM) and dual-polarized radar backscatter measurements. The methods were tested on the BELSAR-Campaign data set consisting of in-situ measurements of bio-geophysical variables of vegetation and soil in maize fields combined with multi-polarized C- and L-band SAR data from Sentinel-1 and BELSAR. Accurate GAI estimates were obtained using a random forest regressor for the inversion of a pair of WCMs calibrated using cross and vertical co-polarized SAR data in L- and C-band, with correlation coefficients of 0.79 and 0.65 and RMSEs of 0.77 m2 m−2 and 0.98 m2 m−2, respectively, between estimates and in-situ measurements. The WCM, however, proved inadequate for soil moisture monitoring in the conditions of the campaign. These promising results indicate that GAI retrieval in maize crops using only dual-polarized radar data could successfully substitute for estimates derived from optical data.

Characterization of Tropical Cyclone Intensity Using the HY-2B Scatterometer Wind Data

The estimation of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity using Ku-band scatterometer data is challenging due to rain perturbation and signal saturation in the radar backscatter measurements. In this paper, an alternative approach to directly taking the maximum scatterometer-derived wind speed is proposed to assess the TC intensity. First, the TC center location is identified based on the unique characteristics of wind stress divergence/curl near the TC core. Then the radial extent of 17-m/s winds (i.e., R17) is calculated using the wind field data from the Haiyang-2B (HY-2B) scatterometer (HSCAT). The feasibility of HSCAT wind radii in determining TC intensity is evaluated using the maximum sustained wind speed (MSW) in the China Meteorological Administration best-track database. It shows that the HSCAT R17 value generally better correlates with the best-track MSW than the HSCAT maximum wind speed, therefore indicating the potential of using the HSCAT data to improve the TC nowcasting capabilities.

Spectral Algorithm in Waves Profiling and Prediction From Radar Backscatter

Conventional X-band radars constitute a convenient cheap source of measurements for deterministic sea wave profiling and prediction. The radar backscatter measurements, however, suffer from several imperfections such as the effects of larger waves shadowing smaller waves. In order to extract the wave profiles and build a reliable (spectral) sea model, multiple radar scans must be processed. A technique based on 3DFFT has been proven to show promising results and has been implemented in commercially available wave profiling radars. Nonetheless, there are several drawbacks associated with using 3DFFT to determine the phase-resolved spectral coefficients in the sea model from a number of radar scans. In this article, we present an alternative spectral approach that can offer several advantages over 3DFFT in radar wave profiling and prediction. First, it has the ability to directly handle ship movement and radar rotation antenna effects with no approximation, interpolation, or extra cost. Second, it can offer an increase in the output update rate by eliminating repeating computations, which is achieved by its recursive nature (i.e., using past output) and by its multistep architecture. Third, it can be set to readily target the relative spectral components that can best describe the wave field. The proposed technique is evaluated using raw backscatter field data from a dedicated sea trial. A simulation study is also included to gain more understanding about the performance of the proposed technique in particular and radar wave sensing and prediction in general.

Toward the Detection of Oil Spills in Newly Formed Sea Ice Using C-Band Multipolarization Radar

Oil spills in the Arctic are becoming more likely as shipping traffic increases in response to climate-related sea ice loss. To improve oil spill detection capability, we used a controlled mesocosm to analyze the multipolarized C-band backscatter response of oil in newly formed sea ice (NI). Artificial sea ice was grown in two cylindrical tubs at the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility, University of Manitoba. The sea ice physical characteristics, including surface roughness, thickness, temperature, and salinity, were measured before and after oil injection below the ice sheet. Time-series C-band radar backscatter measurements detected the differences in the sea ice evolution and oil migration to the sea ice surface in the oil-contaminated tub, which was compared to uncontaminated ice in a control tub. Immediately prior to the presence of oil on the ice surface, the copolarized backscatter is increased by 13-dB local maximum, while the cross-polarized backscatter is decreased by 9-dB. Ice physical properties suggest that the local backscatter maximum and minimum, which occurred immediately before oil migrated onto the surface, were related to a combination of brine and oil upward migration. The findings of this work provide a baseline data interpretation for oil detection in the Arctic Ocean using current and future C-band multipolarization radar satellites.

Sea Ice Monitoring with CFOSAT Scatterometer Measurements Using Random Forest Classifier

The Ku-band scatterometer called CSCAT onboard the Chinese–French Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT) is the first spaceborne rotating fan-beam scatterometer (RFSCAT). This paper performs sea ice monitoring with the CSCAT backscatter measurements in polar areas. The CSCAT measurements have the characteristics of diverse incidence and azimuth angles and separation between open water and sea ice. Hence, five microwave feature parameters, which show different sensitivity to ice or water, are defined and derived from the CSCAT measurements firstly. Then the random forest classifier is selected for sea ice monitoring because of its high overall accuracy of 99.66% and 93.31% in the Arctic and Antarctic, respectively. The difference of features ranked by importance in different seasons and regions shows that the combination of these parameters is effective in discriminating sea ice from water under various conditions. The performance of the algorithm is validated against the sea ice edge data from the EUMETSAT Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) on a global scale in a period from 1 January 2019 to 10 May 2021. The mean sea ice area differences between CSCAT and OSI SAF product in the Arctic and Antarctic are 0.2673 million km2 and −0.4446 million km2, respectively, and the sea ice area relative errors of CSCAT are less than 10% except for summer season in both poles. However, the overall sea ice area derived from CSCAT is lower than the OSI SAF sea ice area in summer. This may be because the CSCAT is trained by radiometer sea ice concentration data while the radiometer measurement of sea ice is significantly affected by melting in the summer season. In conclusion, this research verifies the capability of CSCAT in monitoring polar sea ice using a machine learning-aided random forest classifier. This presented work can give guidance to sea ice monitoring with radar backscatter measurements from other spaceborne scatterometers, particular for the recently launched FY-3E scatterometer (called WindRad).

DETERMINISTIC SEA WAVES PREDICTION FROM X-BAND RADAR: NEW ALGORITHM AND SEA TRIAL

Many maritime operations can benefit from short-term deterministic sea wave prediction (DSWP). Conventional X-band radars constitute a convenient cheap source of measurements for DSWP. The radar backscatter measurements suffer from several imperfections such as the effect of larger waves shadowing smaller waves. In order to extract the wave profiles and build a reliable sea prediction model, multiple radar scans must be processed. In this paper, we present a new single-wavenumber least-squares spectral algorithm for wave prediction from radar backscatter. Deep Learning for Mineral and Biogenic Oil Slick Classification With Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Data

Studies of oil slicks in the ocean environment with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have found that one of the most complex challenges to oil spill detection is the separation of mineral oil spills from slicks that are biogenic in origin. The possible occurrence of multiple scattering mechanisms beyond Bragg scattering for the sea surface, with or without biogenic or mineral oil slicks, and even under low to moderate wind conditions, has also been a subject of debate because the measured signals from these radar-dark surfaces can be contaminated easily by noise. Therefore, the use of noise-uncontaminated data is required for oil spill study in order to avoid significant alteration in the measured radar backscatter, which can lead to misinterpretation and misclassification of the scattering mechanisms involved. To this end, this study uses uninhabited aerial vehicle SAR data, with a noise-equivalent sigma zero as low as −53 dB, to investigate slick classification within a deep learning framework in order to assess deep architectures’ capabilities for providing a reliable and accurate three-state classifier capable of separating mineral oil films from biogenic slicks and from the clean sea. The study exploits parameters with sensitivity to the dielectric constant and ocean wave damping properties, and convolutional neural networks’ (CNNs’) capability for learning nonlinear features, shapes, and textural and statistical patterns, in order to obtain significant classification accuracy. Very high accuracy results have been achieved, with values up to 0.91, 0.94, 0.98, and 0.99 under the most probable real-world spill acquisition conditions.

A Technique for Estimating Liquid Droplet Diameter and Liquid Water Content in Stratocumulus Clouds Using Radar and Lidar Measurements

AbstractThis paper describes a technique for estimating the liquid water content (LWC) and a characteristic particle diameter in stratocumulus clouds using radar and lidar observations. The uncertainty in LWC estimate from radar and lidar measurements is significantly reduced once the characteristic particle diameter is known. The technique is independent of the drop size distribution. It is applicable for a broad range of W-band reflectivityZbetween −30 and 0 dBZand all values of lidar backscatterβobservations. No partitioning of cloud or drizzle is required on the basis of an arbitrary threshold ofZas in prior studies. A method for estimating droplet diameter and LWC was derived from the electromagnetic simulations of radar and lidar observations. In situ stratocumulus cloud and drizzle probe spectra were input to the electromagnetic simulation. The retrieved droplet diameter and LWC were validated using in situ measurements from the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The retrieval method was applied to radar and lidar measurements from the northeastern Pacific. Uncertainty in the retrieved droplet diameter and LWC that are due to the measurement errors in radar and lidar backscatter measurements are 7% and 14%, respectively. The retrieved LWC was validated using the concurrent G-band radiometer estimates of the liquid water path.

Assessment of Precipitating Marine Stratocumulus Clouds in the E3SMv1 Atmosphere Model: A Case Study from the ARM MAGIC Field Campaign

AbstractThis paper presents a process-oriented evaluation of precipitating stratocumulus and its transition to cumulus in version 1 of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SMv1) using comprehensive case-study observations from a field campaign of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program (ARM). The E3SMv1 single-column model (SCM) of the marine boundary layer and its low clouds and precipitation are compared to observations including subcloud drizzle retrievals from a combination of Doppler radar and lidar backscatter measurements. The SCM is also compared to a large-eddy simulation (LES) of the same case. The combination of advanced remote sensing observations and LES is a powerful framework to evaluate the physical parameterizations of large-scale models. Given the observed large-scale environment, the E3SMv1 SCM realistically represents the evolution of clouds and boundary layer structure during the stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition. The model well simulates the liquid water path and its diurnal cycle in the stratocumulus period as well as the two-layer vertical thermodynamic structure and lower cloud fraction in the transition period. E3SMv1’s success in simulating the cloud in the stratocumulus period permitted examination of its precipitation processes. Here problems were identified with E3SMv1 producing an unrealistically small subcloud precipitation fraction, an unrealistic double peak in the vertical profiles of precipitation mass, and drizzle that evaporates too close to the surface. Further model diagnostics determined that these unrealistic characteristics resulted from an overly long microphysics time step and an unrealistic parameterization of the precipitation fraction. These results imply that careful consideration of these issues is needed in order to better simulate precipitation processes in marine stratocumulus.

Radiometric Comparison within the Sentinel-1 SAR Constellation over a Wide Backscatter Range

Radiometric calibration adjusts the measured pixel intensity to a physical property, the radar cross section (RCS). After calibration, this relationship is defined over the entire backscatter range: from low image power (near noise) up to high reflections (below saturation). Based on a proper radiometric calibration, the measured radar backscatter for the Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation is validated over a wide backscatter range using different target types. Therefore, the RCS derived from point targets and radar brightness from distributed targets are compared between Sentinel-1A (S-1A) and Sentinel-1B (S-1B) acquisitions over the same observation area for regions where a stable target backscatter is expected for a certain period of time. Low differences (in the order of 0.3 dB) are found between S-1A and S-1B for high and medium backscatter derived from point targets or rainforest regions, but higher differences for low backscattering regions like ice areas and lakes. For comparing radar brightness containing low backscatter targets, an accurate derived noise level has to be taken into account. In addition to the measured lower noise equivalent beta zero (NEBZ) level, higher transmit power was detected for S-1B compared to S-1A. The higher antenna gain of S-1B leads finally to a higher sensitivity for low backscattering areas of S-1B compared to S-1A and explains the found differences.

Inferring Air‐Sea Carbon Dioxide Transfer Velocities From Sea Surface Scatterometer Measurements

AbstractC‐band microwave sea surface radar backscatter observations from the FINO‐2 tower in the western Baltic are analyzed with respect to their relevance for air‐sea CO2 transfer velocity parameterizations. The scatterometer measurements observed from a height of 25 m above the sea surface using a multifrequency scatterometer instrument of the University of Hamburg were obtained quasi‐simultaneously with eddy covariance CO2 flux measurements. Both data sets are merged here to derive a gas transfer velocity parameterization based on radar backscatter measurements. At the location of the FINO‐2 tower, the resulting time‐averaged gas transfer velocity amounts to 26.95 cm/hr. In combination with measurements available from the vicinity of the FINO‐2 platform, a time‐mean CO2 flux of 0.23 μmol·m−2·s−1 into the Baltic was estimated. Applied to monthly mean satellite‐based C‐band ASCAT scatterometer data, the newly derived gas transfer velocity parameterization provides estimates of seasonal and annual mean global maps of air‐sea transfer velocities. The new results agree in their general pattern with previous estimates using wind speed parameterization. However, the backscatter‐based transfer velocities appear smaller at higher latitudes. Globally averaged air‐sea CO2 fluxes would thereby be reduced by 20%. To what extent this is a robust result, or if it depends on the fact that the training data set did not represent conditions, has to be investigated in the future.

A Geophysical Model Function for Wind Speed Retrieval From C-Band HH-Polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is routinely acquired at HH-polarization in high-latitude areas for measuring surface wind over the ocean. However, in the contrary of VV-polarization, there is no HH-polarization geophysical model function (GMF) exists to directly retrieve wind speed from SAR images. In general, HH-polarized normalized radar cross section (NRCS) is thus converted into VV-polarization and then conventional CMOD functions are used with auxiliary wind direction information for wind speed retrieval. In this letter, we propose a new GMF for SAR ocean surface wind speed retrieval, called CMODH, which relates the C-band NRCS acquired at HH-polarization over the ocean, to the 10-m height wind speed, incident angle, and relative wind direction. We first use more than 220 000 ENVISAT ASAR radar backscatter measurements collocated with ASCAT winds to derive the CMODH coefficients. Subsequently, 1459 RADARSAT-2 (RS-2) and 428 Sentinel-1A/B (Sl-1A/B) HH-polarized SAR acquisitions under different wind speeds are matched to in situ buoy observations to validate CMODH. The statistical comparisons between SAR-observed and simulated NRCS show a bias of −0.07 dB and a root-mean-square error of 1.62 dB for RS-2, and −0.01 dB and 2.48 dB for S1-1A/B. These results suggest that the proposed CMODH has the potential to directly retrieve ocean surface wind speeds using C-band SAR images acquired at HH-polarization, with no need for NRCS transformation by using various empirical and theoretical polarization ratio models.

Gap Filling of High‐Resolution Soil Moisture for SMAP/Sentinel‐1: A Two‐Layer Machine Learning‐Based Framework

AbstractAs the most recent 3‐km soil moisture product from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, the SMAP/Sentinel‐1 L2_SM_SP product has a unique capability to provide global‐scale 3‐km soil moisture estimates through the fusion of radar and radiometer microwave observations. The spatial and temporal availability of this high‐resolution soil moisture product depends on concurrent radar and radiometer observations which is significantly restricted by the narrow swath and low revisit schedule of the Sentinel‐1 radars. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel two‐layer machine learning‐based framework which predicts the brightness temperature and subsequently the soil moisture at gap areas. The proposed method is able to gap‐fill soil moisture satisfactorily at areas where the radiometer observations are available while the radar observations are missing. We find that incorporating historical radar backscatter measurements (30‐day average) into the machine learning framework boosts its predictive performance. The effectiveness of the two‐layer framework is validated against regional holdout SMAP/Sentinel‐1 3‐km soil moisture estimates at four study areas with distinct climate regimes. Results indicate that our proposed method is able to reconstruct 3‐km soil moisture at gap areas with high Pearson correlation coefficient (47%/35%/20%/80% improvement of mean R, at Arizona/Oklahoma/Iowa/Arkansas) and low unbiased Root Mean Square Error (20%/10%/7%/26% improvement of mean unbiased root mean square error) when compared to the SMAP 33‐km soil moisture product. Additional validations against airborne data and in situ data from soil moisture networks are also satisfactory.
