Tannic acid-crosslinked gelatin composite microspheres adsorbed with CQAS or Ca2+ for rapid hemostasis

In the case of massive blood loss due to natural disasters and wars, timely and rapid hemostasis is of great significance to improve the survival rate of injured people. Nevertheless, uncontrolled, noncompressible, and irregular bleeding wounds remain a giant challenge for rapid hemostasis. In this study, the tannic acid-crosslinked gelatin was first obtained by Michael addition reaction, and then the tannic acid-crosslinked gelatin composite microspheres (TGMs) were prepared by the emulsion cross-linking method. TGMs could significantly improve the water absorption and hemostatic performance compared with single component gelatin microspheres (GMs). Increasing the water absorption ratio and introducing blood coagulation factors into composite materials are simple and effective strategies to enhance the hemostatic properties. Therefore, chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) and Ca2+ were electrostatic adsorbed to obtain two kinds of functional TGMs, which were respectively CQAS-absorbed TGMs (T2GMs-CQAS) and calcium ion-absorbed TGMs (T2GMs-Ca2+). Notably, T2GMs-CQAS, and T2GMs-Ca2+ could absorb water rapidly within 3 seconds, in addition, especially the water absorption ratio of T2GMs-CQAS could reach 2.95 times compared with GMs. Benefited from rapid water absorption, coagulation pathway activation, and red blood cells aggregation of T2GMs-CQAS and T2GMs-Ca2+, resulting in rapid blood coagulation in vitro. In addition, CQAS and Ca2+ provided strong and intrinsic antibacterial activity due to positive charge. Moreover, in the tail amputation and liver hemostatic models, T2GMs-CQAS and T2GMs-Ca2+ demonstrated superior hemostatic effects compared to commercial Yunnan Baiyao®. In conclusion, T2GMs-CQAS and T2GMs-Ca2+ have potential applications as hemostatic dressings in uncontrolled, noncompressible, and irregular bleeding wounds.

The application of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt to replace polymeric aluminum ferric chloride for sewage sludge dewatering

Inorganic coagulants such as poly aluminum ferric chloride (Al/Fe) are applied conventionally to sewage sludge dewatering and can be retained in the sludge cake, causing its conductivity to increase and generate secondary pollution. To reduce these disadvantages, there is a need to develop alternative, more sustainable chemicals as substitutes for conventional inorganic coagulants. In the present investigation, the application of a polymeric chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) is explored as a complete, or partial, replacement for Al/Fe in the context of sludge dewatering processes. Laboratory experiments using digested sewage sludge showed that CQAS could effectively substitute for over 80 % of the Al/Fe inorganic coagulant in the sludge dewatering process. This substitution resulted in a reduction of sludge cake conductivity by more than 50 %. Simulation of sludge dewatering curves and imaging of the sludge surface indicated that the addition of CQAS led to an increase in nanosized pores, and a decrease in the specific resistance of the sludge filter cake as the dosage of Al/Fe decreased to around 30 %. The variations of fluorescence emission, quantum yield and carboxylic and amino groups, suggested that the chelating of Al/Fe decreased due to the bridging effects of CQAS. The CQAS had different flocculation bridging effects on various EPS fractions, which varied the amount of protein chelated with Al/Fe in each fraction. This study provides new information about the benefits of replacing conventional inorganic coagulants with natural organic polymers for sewage sludge dewatering, in terms of reduced sludge cake conductivity and greater dry solids content.

Effect of Chitosan and Its Water-Soluble Derivatives on Antioxidant Activity.

The antioxidant activity of chitosan (CS) and three water-soluble derivatives was analyzed comparatively by in vitro and in vivo experiments, including hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCS), quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan (HACC), and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). The results show that chitosan and its water-soluble derivatives have a scavenging ability on DPPH radicals, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals, and a reducing ability. A remarkable difference (p < 0.05) was found for HACC and HPCS compared with CS on DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and reducing ability. The antioxidant ability of the four chitosan samples was in the order of HPCS > HACC > CMCS > CS. Furthermore, antioxidant activity of all samples increased gradually in a concentration-dependent manner. The in vivo result indicates that oral CS and its derivatives samples result in a decrease in lipid peroxides (LPO) and free fatty acids (FFA) levels in serum with an increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Especially for the HPCS and HACC groups, the LPO, FFA, and SOD activity in serum was different significantly in comparison with the high-fat controlgroup (HF) (p < 0.05). These results indicate that chitosan and its derivatives can be used as good antioxidants, and the antioxidant activity might be related to the molecular structure of chitosan derivatives.

An interface-integrated hydrogel for all-in-one flexible supercapacitor with excellent wide-temperature and self-healing properties

With the rapid development of flexible energy storage devices, the abilities to withstand various of mechanical deformation and maintain stable electrochemical performance at different temperatures are two decisive factors that stand out in their applications. Herein, aniline containing 2-acrylamido-2methylpropane sulfonic acid sodium is polymerized in-situ on hydrogels with double cross-linked networks constructed by polyacrylamide, polyvinyl alcohol and quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan through electrostatic interaction, so as to obtain the PPHP-Na hydrogels for the construction of the all-in-one flexible supercapacitors. The PPHP-Na hydrogels can withstand a maximum of 544% tensile strain at tensile stress up to 601 kPa, and can maintain stable dissipation during stress-strain tensile cycles and recover quickly after cycling, exhibiting excellent mechanical properties. In addition, the optimal PPHP-Na hydrogel shows a high ionic conductivity of 65.6 mS cm−1. More importantly, as an all-in-one flexible energy storage device, the PPHP-Na supercapacitor shows high area capacitance of 250.75 mF cm−2, and can maintain relatively stable electrochemical performance at -40-80 °C and good self-healing property. This interface-integrated strategy of all-in-one flexible supercapacitors with excellent and stable electrochemical performance constructed provides meaningful ideas for the development of flexible electronic devices.

Construction Strategy and Mechanism of a Novel Wood Preservative with Excellent Antifungal Effects.

Wood is a naturally porous material prone to microbial erosion and degradation in outdoor environments. Therefore, the development of an environmentally friendly wood preservative with excellent antibacterial effects and low toxicity is urgently needed. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with excellent antifungal performance and fluorescent properties were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) as the raw material. The fluorescence characteristics of N-CQD preservatives can help track their position and distribution in wood. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of N-CQDs is 1.8 mg/mL, which was nearly 22 times lower than that of HACC (40.0 mg/mL) in the PDA medium. The decay resistance test demonstrated that wood treated with N-CQDs showed a considerably reduced decay degree and its mass loss rate decreased from 46 ± 0.5% to 3.8 ± 0.5%. Biological transmission electron microscopy revealed that N-CQDs effectively destroyed fungal cell structures, thereby hindering the growth of Coriolus versicolor. N-CQDs synthesized using the one-step hydrothermal method can be used as an efficient wood preservative that can effectively improve the utilization and service life of wood.

Quaternized chitosan-based organic-inorganic nanohybrid nanoparticles loaded with prothioconazole for efficient management of fungal diseases with minimal environmental impact

Poor foliar deposition and retention of pesticides results in serious pesticide residues and environmental pollution. Organic-inorganic hybridized nanoparticles (OIHN), combining the advantages of organic and inorganic materials, can be used as carriers to load pesticides for efficient and safe application. Herein, a novel multifunctional OIHN composed of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) was constructed and used as a delivery system for prothioconazole (PTC). The resultant PTC@MSNs-HACC exhibited a remarkable loading capacity of 39.07 wt% and demonstrated enhanced PTC release (31.47 %) under alkaline conditions. The UV-shielding properties of MSNs efficiently shielded PTC from photodegradation, increasing its photostability by over threefold. The strong positive charge of HACC conferred excellent adhesion of PTC@MSNs-HACC to fungal cell membranes, leading to high deposition on wheat leaves with improved rain-wash resistance (increased by 30 %). Consequently, PTC@MSNs-HACC (EC50: 12.48 mg/L) exhibited superior wheat scab control compared to PTC emulsifiable concentrate (EC50: 28.49 mg/L). Additionally, PTC@MSNs-HACC displayed excellent uptake and transport in plants, ensuring plant safety and reducing toxicity to zebrafish by >1-fold. The potential application of the developed PTC@MSNs-HACC in agricultural production holds significant promise and is anticipated to find widespread use in the future.

Hydrogel-Functionalized Bandages with Janus Wettability for Efficient Unidirectional Drug Delivery and Wound Care.

Chronic wounds have imposed a severe physical and economic burden on the global healthcare system, which are usually treated by the delivery of drugs or bioactive molecules to the wound bed through wound dressings. In this work, we have demonstrated a hydrogel-functionalized bandage with Janus wettability in a bilayer structure to achieve unidirectional drug delivery and multifunctional wound care. The Janus patterned bandage with porous gradient wetting channels on the upper layer is responsible for the unidirectional transport of the drug from the outside to the wound bed (up to 90% drug transport efficiency) while preventing drug diffusion in unwanted directions (<8%). The hydrogel composed of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) at the bottom layer further functionalized such a bandage with biocompatibility, excellent antibacterial properties, and hemostatic ability to promote wound healing. Especially, the hydrogel-functionalized bandage with Janus wettability exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility (∼198% strain), which can comply well with skin deformation (stretching, bending, or twisting) and maintain unidirectional drug delivery behavior without any leakage. The in vivo full-thickness skin wound model confirms that the hydrogel-functionalized bandage can significantly facilitate epithelialization and collagen deposition and improve drug delivery efficiency, thus promoting wound closure and healing (the wound healing ratio was 98.10% at day 15). Such a synergistic strategy of unidirectional drug delivery and multifunctional wound care provides a more efficient, economical, and direct method to promote wound healing, which could be used as a potential high-performance wound dressing for clinical application.

A highly biocompatible CE-crosslinked collagen implant with exceptional anti-calcification and collagen regeneration capabilities for aging skin rejuvenation.

Skin aging, a complex and inevitable biological process, results in wrinkles, dermal laxity, and skin cancer, profoundly influencing appearance and overall health. Collagen serves as the fundamental element of the dermal matrix; nevertheless, collagen is susceptible to enzymatic degradation within the body. Crosslinking is employed to enhance the physicochemical properties of collagen. However, conventional crosslinking agents may harbor potential issues such as cytotoxicity and calcification risks, constraining their application in the biomedical field. Therefore, we have for the first time developed a highly biocompatible CE-crosslinked collagen implant with exceptional anti-calcification and collagen regeneration capabilities for aging skin rejuvenation. A novel collagen crosslinking agent (CE) was synthesized through a reaction involving chitosan quaternary ammonium salt with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. Compared to collagen crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA), the CE-crosslinked collagen implant exhibited notable stability and durability. The implant demonstrated excellent injectability and viscosity, resisting displacement after implantation. Additionally, the CE-crosslinked collagen implant displayed superior biocompatibility, effectively promoting the proliferation and adhesion of HFF-1 cells compared with the GA-crosslinked collagen. The CE-crosslinked collagen represented a safer and more biologically active implant material. In vivo experiments further substantiated that the implant significantly facilitated collagen regeneration without inducing calcification. The innovative collagen implant has made substantial strides in enhancing aesthetics and reducing wrinkles, presenting the potential for revolutionary progress in the fields of skin rejuvenation and collagen regeneration.

Preparation, and antibacterial activity of chitosan derivative containing double quaternary ammonium salt and hydantoin structures

Chitosan quaternary ammonium salt antibacterial agents with a single structure have the drawbacks of slow bactericidal speed and poor bactericidal effect, which cannot meet the practical usage requirements. To address the problem, in this study, we designed and synthesized a novel chitosan derivative containing double quaternary ammonium salt and chloride hydantoin structures (QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl) by using chitosan, 5,5-dimethyl hydantoin, methyl iodide, and 2-Dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride as the main raw materials, and then used as antibacterial agent. The structure of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric, and Scanning electron microscopy. The antibacterial activity of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl, and the renewability and stability of N-Cl structure in QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl were explored. The results indicated that the N-Cl structure of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl has strong renewability and storage stability. Moreover, the synergistic effect of quaternary ammonium salt structure and N-Cl structure endowed QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl with excellent antibacterial activity. This work does not only provide a new perspective for the preparation of novel chitosan antibacterial agents but also contributes to expanding the comprehensive utilization of biomass resources.

Structure and Properties of Cationic Chitosan Derivative Modified Bombyx mori

Abstract Cationic modification of silk fabric can highly improve its antibacterial property, but cationic modification may change the microstructure of silk fiber, and further affect its properties, thus O-methyl acrylamide quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan (NMA-HTCC), which is a kind of strong cationic chitosan derivative, was used for the modification on Bombyx mori silk fiber. The combination structure between NMA-HTCC and silk fiber was characterized by FT-IR. The surface morphology and structure of silk fiber after being treated by NMA-HTCC were investigated by SEM and XPS analysis. The crystalline structure and thermal stability of silk fibers before and after being treated were determined by XRD and DSC analysis, respectively. Then the breaking strength, breaking elongation and antibacterial properties of the silk yarns were also determined. The results indicated that the NMA-HTCC modified silk fiber clearly showed two characteristic absorption peaks at 1535 cm-1 and 1670 cm-1 due to the N-H bending and C=O stretch of the secondary amide in the acrylamidomethyl group of the NMA-HTCC molecule. The successful combination of NMA-HTCC and silk fiber was also confirmed by XPS and SEM analysis. Compared with the untreated silk sample, the diffracted intensity of the characteristic absorption peak and crystallinity of the NMA-HTCC modified silk fiber were both increased; the internal aggregation structure of the silk fiber treated with NMA-HTCC was much closer and its thermal stability was enhanced obviously. The breaking strength and elongation of silk fibers after being treated with NMA-HTCC were also significantly increased. Silk fibers treated with NMA-HTCC had excellent durable antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli, even after 50 repeated launderings, with the bacterial reduction rate of the silk fibers maintained at over 95 %. The results in this research can provide the theoretical basis for the application of NMA-HTCC in the modifications of silk fabric.

Rapid screening of electrochemically active bacteria based on a biocathode-functional bipolar electrode-electrochemiluminescence platform.

A functional bipolar electrode-electrochemiluminescence (BPE-ECL) platform based on biocathode reducing oxygen was constructed for detecting electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) in this paper. Firstly, thiolated trimethylated chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (TMC-SH) layer was assembled on the gold-plated cathode of BPE. TMC-SH contains quaternary ammonium salt branch chain, which can inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the surface or in the surrounding environment while absorbing bacteria. Then, the peristaltic pump was used to flow all of the samples through the cathode, and the EAB was electrostatically adsorbed on the electrode surface. Finally, applying a constant potential to the BPE, bacteria can catalyze electrochemical reduction of O2, and decrease the overpotential of O2 reduction at the cathode, which in turn generates an ECL reporting intensity change at the anode. In this way, live and dead bacteria can be distinguished, and the influence of complex food substrates on detection can be greatly reduced.

Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels from Controlled Kneading and Annealing-Induced Tightly Wound and Highly Entangled Natural Polysaccharides.

Hydrogels usually are fabricated by using monomers or preexisting polymers in precursor solutions. Here, a polyelectrolyte complex biohydrogel (Bio-PEC hydrogel) made from a precursor dough, by kneading, annealing, and crosslinking the dough of two oppositely charged polysaccharides, cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) and anionic sodium hyaluronate (HA), photoinitiator (α-ketoglutaric acid), crosslinker glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and water of very small quantity is reported. Controlled kneading and annealing homogenized the dough with respect to transforming randomly distributed, individual polymer chains into tightly wound double-stranded structures, which, upon UV irradiation, covalently sparsely crosslinked into a highly entangled network and subsequently, upon fully swollen in water, results in Bio-PEC hydrogel, HACC/HA, exhibiting near-perfect elasticity, high tensile strength, and high swelling resistance. Via the same kneading and annealing, tetracarboxyphenylporphyrin iron (Fe-TCPP) metal nanoclusters are incorporated into HACC/HA to obtain photocatalytic, antibacterial, and biocompatible Bio-PEC hydrogel composite, Fe-TCPP@HACC/HA. Using SD rat models, the efficacy of Fe-TCPP@HACC/HA in inhibiting Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth in vitro and the ability to promote wound healing and scar-free skin regeneration in vivo, or its high potential as a wound dressing material for biomedical applications are demonstrated.

A comparative study of the efficacy and safety of pure silica gel and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt silica gel in hypertrophic scar treatment

Purpose: To compare clinical efficacy of pure silica gel and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt silica gel (SQASC) in treatment of hypertrophic scars.Methods: Eighty-four patients with hypertrophic scars, who were admitted to hospital, were randomly divided into study group and control group with 42 patients in each group. Study group was treated with SQASC while control group was treated with pure silica gel. Scar scores (Vancouver scar score, VSS), scar aesthetics (Patient and observer scar assessment scale, POSAS), symptom improvement and adverse reactions were compared between groups before and after treatment.Results: Before treatment, there were no differences in VSS and POSAS scores for each aspect between groups. After treatment, VSS and POSAS scores for each aspect in study group were significantly lower than those in control group (p &lt; 0.05). Congestion, itching, pain disappearance and thickness reduction occurred significantly earlier in study group than in control group (p &lt; 0.05). Incidence of adverse reactions in study group was 4.76 %, which was significantly lower than 19.05% in control group (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: Compared with pure silica gel, SQASC effectively alleviates symptoms of hypertrophic scars and aesthetics with fewer adverse effects. In future studies, sample size will be increased and study duration will be extended appropriately.

Carboxymethyl Chitosan/Sodium Alginate/Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt Composite Hydrogel Supported 3J for the Treatment of Oral Ulcer.

Oral ulcer is a common inflammatory disease of oral mucosa, causing severe burning pain and great inconvenience to daily life. In this study, compound 3J with anti-inflammatory activity was synthesized beforehand. Following that, an intelligent composite hydrogel supported 3J was designed with sodium alginate, carboxymethyl chitosan, and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt as the skeleton, and its therapeutic effect on the rat oral ulcer model was investigated. The results show that the composite hydrogel has a dense honeycomb structure, which is conducive to drug loading and wound ventilation, and has biodegradability. It has certain antibacterial effects and good anti-inflammatory activity. When loaded with 3J, it reduced levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in inflammatory cells by up to 50.0%. It has excellent swelling and water retention properties, with a swelling rate of up to 765.0% in a pH 8.5 environment. The existence of a large number of quaternary ammonium groups, carboxyl groups, and hydroxyl groups makes it show obvious differences in swelling in different pH environments, which proves that it has double pH sensitivity. It is beneficial to adapt to the highly dynamic changes of the oral environment. Compared with single hydrogel or drug treatment, the drug-loaded hydrogel has a better effect on the treatment of oral ulcers.

Lightweight, multifunctional smart MXene@PET non-woven with electric/photothermal conversion, antibacterial and flame retardant properties

Flexible wearable devices combining conductive materials with traditional textiles have extensive research attention. Herein, considering the adhesive fastness and dispersibility of the conductive layer, an attempt was made to introduce chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) onto polyethylene terephthalate non-woven (PET non-woven fabrics) substrate through cation-π interactions and then loaded with conductive and well-dispersed MXene. The fabric has satisfactory electrical conductivity (1.77 × 10−2 Ω.m), fast electro-thermal conversion performance, and photothermal conversion performance (surface temperature up to 80.0 °C at a supply voltage of 4 V and light intensity of 300 mW/cm2) due to the continuous conductive network formed by the MXene-wrapped PET fibrics. In addition, the antimicrobial efficiency of the non-woven fabric against Escherichia coli (E. coli) could reach 99.99% under the synergistic effect of HACC and MXene and simulated sunlight irradiation at 300 mW/cm2. At the same time, MXene forms a dense protective layer when burned, which improves the flame retardant properties of the fabric. As a result, this intelligent non-woven fabric demonstrates limitless potential for creating adaptable wearable technology that may satisfy users' needs for a variety of uses.

Degradable Supramolecular Eutectogel-Based Ionic Skin with Antibacterial, Adhesive, and Self-Healable Capabilities.

The development of degradable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly ionic conductive gels is highly required to reduce electronic waste originating from flexible electronic devices. However, biocompatible, degradable, tough, and durable conductive gels are challenging to achieve. Herein, we develop a facile strategy for the design and synthesis of degradable tough eutectogels by integrating an electrostatically driven supramolecular network composed of branched polyacrylic acid (PAA) and monoethanolamine (MEA) into a green deep eutectic solvent with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQS). The specially designed PAA/MEA/CQS eutectogels present multiple desired properties, including high transparency, widely adjustable mechanical properties, high resilience, reliable adhesiveness, excellent self-healing ability, good conductivity, remarkable anti-freezing performance, and antibacterial properties. The dynamic and reversible supramolecular interactions not only significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the PAA/MEA/CQS eutectogels but also enable fast degradation, addressing the dilemma between mechanical strength and degradability. More importantly, a biocompatible and degradable multifunctional ionic skin is successfully fabricated based on the PAA/MEA/CQS eutectogel, exhibiting high sensitivity, a wide sensing range, and a rapid response speed toward strain, pressure, and temperature. Thus, this study offers a promising strategy for fabricating degradable tough eutectogels, which show great potential as high-performance ionic skins for next-generation flexible wearable electronic devices.

High Strength, Conductivity, and Bacteriostasis of the P(AM-co-AA)/Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt Composite Hydrogel through Ionic Crosslinking and Hydrogen Bonding.

Traditional hydrogels with a single-crosslinked network structure suffer from poor stretchability, low sensitivity, and easy contamination, which seriously affect their practical application in the strain sensor field. To overcome these shortcomings, herein, a multiphysical crosslinking strategy (ionic crosslinking and hydrogen bonding) was designed to prepare a hydrogel strain sensor based on chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC)-modified P(AM-co-AA) (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid copolymer) hydrogels. The ionic crosslinking for the double-network P(AM-co-AA)/HACC hydrogels was achieved by an immersion method with Fe3+ as crosslinking sites, which crosslinked with the amino group (-NH2) on HACC and the carboxyl group (-COOH) on P(AM-co-AA) and enabled the hydrogels to recover and reorganize rapidly, resulting in a hydrogel-based strain sensor with excellent tensile stress (3 MPa), elongation (1390%), elastic modulus (0.42 MPa), and toughness (25 MJ/m3). In addition, the prepared hydrogel exhibited high electrical conductivity (21.6 mS/cm) and sensitivity (GF = 5.02 at 0-20% strain, GF = 6.84 at 20-100% strain, and GF = 10.27 at 100-480% strain). Furthermore, the introduction of HACC endowed the hydrogel with excellent antibacterial properties (up to 99.5%) and excellent antibacterial activity against bacteria of three forms, bacilli, cocci, and spores. The flexible, conductive, and antibacterial hydrogel can be applied as a strain sensor for real-time detection of human motions such as joint movement, speech, and respiration, which exhibits a promising application prospect in wearable devices, soft robotic systems, and other fields.

An antibacterial and intelligent cellulose-based label self-assembled via electrovalent bonds for a multi-range sensing of food freshness

Intelligent labels provide customers with food freshness information. However, the existing label response is limited and can only detect a single kind of food. Here, an intelligent cellulose-based label with highly antibacterial activity for a multi-range sensing freshness was developed to overcome the limitation. Cellulose fibers were modified using oxalic acid to graft -COO− followed by binding chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS), the remaining charges of which attached methylene red and bromothymol blue to form response fibers and to further self-assemble into the intelligent label. CQAS electrostatically gathered the dispersed fibers, resulting in an increase in TS and EB of 282 % and 16.2 %, respectively. After that, the rest positive charges fixed the anionic dyes to broaden pH response range of 3–9 effectively. More significantly, the intelligent label exhibited highly antimicrobial activity, killing 100 % of staphylococcus aureus. The rapid acid-base response revealed the potential for practical application in which the label color from green to orange represented the milk or spinach from fresh to close to spoiled, and from green to yellow, and to light green indicated the pork fresh, acceptable, and close to spoiled. This study paves a way for the preparation of intelligent labels in large-scale and promote the commercial application to improve food safety.

Nanoparticle-dsRNA Treatment of Pollen and Root Systems of Diseased Plants Effectively Reduces the Rate of Tobacco Mosaic Virus in Contemporary Seeds.

Most crop viruses are carried and spread by seeds. Virus-infected seeds are seed-borne viral disease infections, and thus, reducing the rate of seed infection is an urgent problem in the seed-production industry. The objective of this study was to use nanoparticles (NPs) to directly deliver dsRNA into plants or pollen to initiate RNA interference (RNAi) to reduce viral carryover in seeds. Chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC), complexed with dsRNAs, was selected for targeting the genes for the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) coat protein (CP) and TMV RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) to form HACC-dsRNA NPs. These NP-based dsRNAs were delivered to the plants using four different methods, including infiltration, spraying, root soaking, and pollen internalization. All four methods were able to reduce the seed-carrying rate of offspring seeds of the TMV-infected plants, with pollen internalization being the most effective in reducing the TMV-carrying rate from 95.1 to 61.1% in the control group. By measuring the plant uptake of fluorescence-labeled NPs and dsRNAs, the transportation of the HACC-dsRNA NPs into the plants was observed, and the uptake of dsRNA in combination with small RNA sequencing was further confirmed, resulting in the silencing of homologous RNA molecules during the topical application. The results demonstrated that the incidence of TMV infection was reduced by various degrees via RNAi induction without the need to develop transgenic plants. These results demonstrate the advantages of NP-based RNAi technology in breeding for disease resistance and developing a new strategy for virus-resistant breeding in plants.
