Photonic quantum walk with ultrafast time-bin encoding

The quantum walk (QW) has proven to be a valuable testbed for fundamental inquiries in quantum technology applications such as quantum simulation and quantum search algorithms. Many benefits have been found by exploring implementations of QWs in various physical systems, including photonic platforms. Here, we propose a platform to perform quantum walks based on ultrafast time-bin encoding (UTBE) and all-optical Kerr gating. This platform supports the scalability of quantum walks to a large number of steps and walkers while retaining a significant degree of programmability. More importantly, ultrafast time bins are encoded at the picosecond time scale, far away from mechanical fluctuations. This enables the scalability of our platform to many modes while preserving excellent interferometric phase stability over extremely long periods of time without requiring active phase stabilization. Our 18-step QW is shown to preserve interferometric phase stability over a period of 50 h, with an overall walk fidelity maintained above 95%.

Complexity of Digital Quantum Simulation in the Low-Energy Subspace: Applications and a Lower Bound

Digital quantum simulation has broad applications in approximating unitary evolution of Hamiltonians. In practice, many simulation tasks for quantum systems focus on quantum states in the low-energy subspace instead of the entire Hilbert space. In this paper, we systematically investigate the complexity of digital quantum simulation based on product formulas in the low-energy subspace. We show that the simulation error depends on the effective low-energy norm of the Hamiltonian for a variety of digital quantum simulation algorithms and quantum systems, allowing improvements over the previous complexities for full unitary simulations even for imperfect state preparations due to thermalization. In particular, for simulating spin models in the low-energy subspace, we prove that randomized product formulas such as qDRIFT and random permutation require smaller Trotter numbers. Such improvement also persists in symmetry-protected digital quantum simulations. We prove a similar improvement in simulating the dynamics of power-law quantum interactions. We also provide a query lower bound for general digital quantum simulations in the low-energy subspace.

A quantum computing concept for 1-D elastic wave simulation with exponential speedup

SUMMARY Quantum computing has attracted considerable attention in recent years because it promises speedups that conventional supercomputers cannot offer, at least for some applications. Though existing quantum computers (QCs) are, in most cases, still too small to solve significant problems, their future impact on domain sciences is already being explored now. Within this context, we present a quantum computing concept for 1-D elastic wave propagation in heterogeneous media with two components: a theoretical formulation and an implementation on a real QC. The method rests on a finite-difference approximation, followed by a sparsity-preserving transformation of the discrete elastic wave equation to a Schrödinger equation, which can be simulated directly on a gate-based QC. An implementation on an error-free quantum simulator verifies our approach and forms the basis of numerical experiments with small problems on the real QC IBM Brisbane. The latter produce simulation results that qualitatively agree with the error-free version but are contaminated by quantum decoherence and noise effects. Complementing the discrete transformation to the Schrödinger equation by a continuous version allows the replacement of finite differences by other spatial discretization schemes, such as the spectral-element method. Anticipating the emergence of error-corrected quantum chips, we analyse the computational complexity of the best quantum simulation algorithms for future QCs. This analysis suggests that our quantum computing approach may lead to wavefield simulations that run exponentially faster than simulations on classical computers.

Efficient quantum simulation of open quantum system dynamics on noisy quantum computers

Quantum simulation represents the most promising quantum application to demonstrate quantum advantage on near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers, yet available quantum simulation algorithms are prone to errors and thus difficult to realize with limited circuit depth on nowadays quantum devices. Herein, we propose a novel scheme to utilize intrinsic gate errors of NISQ devices to enable controllable simulation of open quantum system dynamics without ancillary qubits or explicit bath engineering, thus turning unwanted quantum noises into useful quantum resources. Specifically, we simulate the energy transfer process in a photosynthetic dimer system on IBM-Q cloud. By employing tailored decoherence-inducing gates, we show that quantum dissipative dynamics can be simulated efficiently across coherent-to-incoherent regimes with results comparable to those of the numerically exact classical method. Moreover, we demonstrate a calibration routine that enables consistent and predictive simulations of open-quantum system dynamics in the intermediate coupling regime. This work provides a new direction for quantum advantage in the NISQ era.

Parallel Quantum Algorithm for Hamiltonian Simulation

We study how parallelism can speed up quantum simulation. A parallel quantum algorithm is proposed for simulating the dynamics of a large class of Hamiltonians with good sparse structures, called uniform-structured Hamiltonians, including various Hamiltonians of practical interest like local Hamiltonians and Pauli sums. Given the oracle access to the target sparse Hamiltonian, in both query and gate complexity, the running time of our parallel quantum simulation algorithm measured by the quantum circuit depth has a doubly (poly-)logarithmic dependence polylog⁡log⁡(1/ϵ) on the simulation precision ϵ. This presents an exponential improvement over the dependence polylog⁡(1/ϵ) of previous optimal sparse Hamiltonian simulation algorithm without parallelism. To obtain this result, we introduce a novel notion of parallel quantum walk, based on Childs' quantum walk. The target evolution unitary is approximated by a truncated Taylor series, which is obtained by combining these quantum walks in a parallel way. A lower bound Ω(log⁡log⁡(1/ϵ)) is established, showing that the ϵ-dependence of the gate depth achieved in this work cannot be significantly improved.Our algorithm is applied to simulating three physical models: the Heisenberg model, the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and a quantum chemistry model in second quantization. By explicitly calculating the gate complexity for implementing the oracles, we show that on all these models, the total gate depth of our algorithm has a polylog⁡log⁡(1/ϵ) dependence in the parallel setting.

Although qubit-based quantum computers can potentially tackle this problem more efficiently than classical devices, encoding nonlocal fermionic statistics introduces an overhead in the required resources, limiting their applicability on near-term architectures. In this work, we present a fermionic quantum processor, where fermionic models are locally encoded in a fermionic register and simulated in a hardware-efficient manner using fermionic gates. We consider in particular fermionic atoms in programmable tweezer arrays and develop different protocols to implement nonlocal gates, guaranteeing Fermi statistics at the hardware level. We use this gate set, together with Rydberg-mediated interaction gates, to find efficient circuit decompositions for digital and variational quantum simulation algorithms, illustrated here for molecular energy estimation. Finally, we consider a combined fermion-qubit architecture, where both the motional and internal degrees of freedom of the atoms are harnessed to efficiently implement quantum phase estimation as well as to simulate lattice gauge theory dynamics.

Digital quantum simulation of the BCS model with a central-spin-like quantum processor

The simulation of quantum systems is one of the most promising applications of quantum computers. In this paper we present a quantum algorithm to perform digital quantum simulations of the BCS model on a quantum register with a star shaped connectivity map, as it is, e.g., featured by color centers in diamond. We show how to effectively translate the problem onto the quantum hardware and implement the algorithm using only the native interactions between the qubits. Furthermore we discuss the complexity of the circuit. We use the algorithm to simulate the dynamics of the BCS model by subjecting its mean-field ground state to a time-dependent perturbation. The quantum simulation algorithm is studied using a classical simulation.

Preparing valence-bond-solid states on noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers

Quantum state preparation is a key step in all digital quantum simulation algorithms. Here we propose methods to initialize on a gate-based quantum computer a general class of quantum spin wave functions, the so-called valence-bond-solid (VBS) states, that are important for two reasons. First, VBS states are the exact ground states of a class of interacting quantum spin models introduced by Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki (AKLT). Second, the two-dimensional VBS states are universal resource states for measurement-based quantum computing. We find that schemes to prepare VBS states based on their tensor-network representations yield quantum circuits that are too deep to be within reach of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. We then apply the general nondeterministic method herein proposed to the preparation of the spin-1 and spin-$3/2$ VBS states, the ground states of the AKLT models defined in one dimension and in the honeycomb lattice, respectively. Shallow quantum circuits of depth independent of the lattice size are explicitly derived for both cases, making use of optimization schemes that outperform standard basis gate decomposition methods. The probabilistic nature of the proposed routine translates into an average number of repetitions to successfully prepare the VBS state that scales exponentially with the number of lattice sites $N$. However, two strategies to quadratically reduce this repetition overhead for any bipartite lattice are devised. Our approach should permit to use NISQ processors to explore the AKLT model and variants thereof, outperforming conventional numerical methods in the near future.

Error-resilient Monte Carlo quantum simulation of imaginary time

Computing the ground-state properties of quantum many-body systems is a promising application of near-term quantum hardware with a potential impact in many fields. The conventional algorithm quantum phase estimation uses deep circuits and requires fault-tolerant technologies. Many quantum simulation algorithms developed recently work in an inexact and variational manner to exploit shallow circuits. In this work, we combine quantum Monte Carlo with quantum computing and propose an algorithm for simulating the imaginary-time evolution and solving the ground-state problem. By sampling the real-time evolution operator with a random evolution time according to a modified Cauchy-Lorentz distribution, we can compute the expected value of an observable in imaginary-time evolution. Our algorithm approaches the exact solution given a circuit depth increasing polylogarithmically with the desired accuracy. Compared with quantum phase estimation, the Trotter step number, i.e. the circuit depth, can be thousands of times smaller to achieve the same accuracy in the ground-state energy. We verify the resilience to Trotterisation errors caused by the finite circuit depth in the numerical simulation of various models. The results show that Monte Carlo quantum simulation is promising even without a fully fault-tolerant quantum computer.

Succinct Description and Efficient Simulation of Non-Markovian Open Quantum Systems

Non-Markovian open quantum systems represent the most general dynamics when the quantum system is coupled with a bath environment. The quantum dynamics arising from many important applications are non-Markovian. Although for special cases, such as Hamiltonian evolution and Lindblad evolution, quantum simulation algorithms have been extensively studied, efficient quantum simulations for the dynamics of non-Markovian open quantum systems remain underexplored. The most immediate obstacle for studying such systems is the lack of a universal succinct description of their dynamics. In this work, we fulfill the gap of studying such dynamics by (1) providing a succinct representation of the dynamics of non-Markovian open quantum systems with quantifiable error, and (2) developing an efficient quantum algorithm for simulating such dynamics with cost $${\mathcal {O}}(t\, \textrm{polylog}(t/\epsilon ))$$ for evolution time t and precision $$\epsilon $$ . Our derivation of the succinct representation is based on stochastic Schrödinger equations, which could lead to new alternatives to deal with open quantum systems as well.

Towards Quantum Control with Advanced Quantum Computing: A Perspective.

We propose the combination of digital quantum simulation and variational quantum algorithms as an alternative approach to numerical methods for solving quantum control problems. As a hybrid quantum-classical framework, it provides an efficient simulation of quantum dynamics compared to classical algorithms, exploiting the previous achievements in digital quantum simulation. We analyze the trainability and the performance of such algorithms based on our preliminary works. We show that specific quantum control problems, e.g., finding the switching time for bang-bang control or the digital quantum annealing schedule, can already be studied in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era. We foresee that these algorithms will contribute even more to quantum control of high precision if the hardware for experimental implementation is developed to the next level.

Qubit-efficient simulation of thermal states with quantum tensor networks

We present a holographic quantum simulation algorithm to variationally prepare thermal states of $d$-dimensional interacting quantum many-body systems, using only enough hardware qubits to represent a $(d\ensuremath{-}1)$-dimensional cross section. This technique implements the thermal state by approximately unraveling the quantum matrix-product density operator (qMPDO) into a stochastic mixture of quantum matrix-product states (sto-qMPS). The parameters of the quantum circuits generating the qMPS and of the probability distribution generating the stochastic mixture are determined through a variational optimization procedure. We demonstrate a small-scale proof-of-principle demonstration of this technique on Quantinuum's trapped-ion quantum processor to simulate thermal properties of correlated spin chains over a wide temperature range using only a single pair of hardware qubits. Then, through classical simulations, we explore the representational power of two versions of sto-qMPS ansatzes for larger and deeper circuits and establish empirical relationships between the circuit resources and the accuracy of the variational free energy.

State Preparation Boosters for Early Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation

Quantum computing is believed to be particularly useful for the simulation of chemistry and materials, among the various applications. In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the development of near-term quantum algorithms for quantum simulation, including VQE and many of its variants. However, for such algorithms to be useful, they need to overcome several critical barriers including the inability to prepare high-quality approximations of the ground state. Current challenges to state preparation, including barren plateaus and the high-dimensionality of the optimization landscape, make state preparation through ansatz optimization unreliable. In this work, we introduce the method of ground state boosting, which uses a limited-depth quantum circuit to reliably increase the overlap with the ground state. This circuit, which we call a booster, can be used to augment an ansatz from VQE or be used as a stand-alone state preparation method. The booster converts circuit depth into ground state overlap in a controllable manner. We numerically demonstrate the capabilities of boosters by simulating the performance of a particular type of booster, namely the Gaussian booster, for preparing the ground state of N2 molecular system. Beyond ground state preparation as a direct objective, many quantum algorithms, such as quantum phase estimation, rely on high-quality state preparation as a subroutine. Therefore, we foresee ground state boosting and similar methods as becoming essential algorithmic components as the field transitions into using early fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Randomizing multi-product formulas for Hamiltonian simulation

Quantum simulation, the simulation of quantum processes on quantum computers, suggests a path forward for the efficient simulation of problems in condensed-matter physics, quantum chemistry, and materials science. While the majority of quantum simulation algorithms are deterministic, a recent surge of ideas has shown that randomization can greatly benefit algorithmic performance. In this work, we introduce a scheme for quantum simulation that unites the advantages of randomized compiling on the one hand and higher-order multi-product formulas, as they are used for example in linear-combination-of-unitaries (LCU) algorithms or quantum error mitigation, on the other hand. In doing so, we propose a framework of randomized sampling that is expected to be useful for programmable quantum simulators and present two new multi-product formula algorithms tailored to it. Our framework reduces the circuit depth by circumventing the need for oblivious amplitude amplification required by the implementation of multi-product formulas using standard LCU methods, rendering it especially useful for early quantum computers used to estimate the dynamics of quantum systems instead of performing full-fledged quantum phase estimation. Our algorithms achieve a simulation error that shrinks exponentially with the circuit depth. To corroborate their functioning, we prove rigorous performance bounds as well as the concentration of the randomized sampling procedure. We demonstrate the functioning of the approach for several physically meaningful examples of Hamiltonians, including fermionic systems and the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model, for which the method provides a favorable scaling in the effort.

First-Order Trotter Error from a Second-Order Perspective.

Simulating quantum dynamics beyond the reach of classical computers is one of the main envisioned applications of quantum computers. The most promising quantum algorithms to this end in the near term are the simplest, which use the Trotter formula and its higher-order variants to approximate the dynamics of interest. The approximation error of these algorithms is often poorly understood, even in the most basic and topical cases where the target Hamiltonian decomposes into two realizable terms: H=H_{1}+H_{2}. Recent studies have reported anomalously low approximation error with unexpected scaling in such cases, which they attribute to quantum interference between the errors from different steps of the algorithm. Here, we provide a simpler picture of these effects by relating the Trotter formula to its second-order variant for such H=H_{1}+H_{2} cases. Our method generalizes state-of-the-art error bounds without the technical caveats of prior studies, and elucidates how each part of the total error arises from the underlying quantum circuit. We compare our bound to the true error numerically, and find a close match over many orders of magnitude in the simulation parameters. Our findings further reduce the required circuit depth for the least experimentally demanding quantum simulation algorithms, and illustrate a useful method for bounding simulation error more broadly.

QForte: An Efficient State-Vector Emulator and Quantum Algorithms Library for Molecular Electronic Structure.

We introduce a novel open-source software package QForte, a comprehensive development tool for new quantum simulation algorithms. QForte incorporates functionality for handling molecular Hamiltonians, Fermionic encoding, ansatz construction, time evolution, and state-vector emulation, requiring only a classical electronic structure package as a dependency. QForte also contains black-box implementations of a wide variety of quantum algorithms, including variational and projective quantum eigensolvers, adaptive eigensolvers, quantum imaginary time evolution, and quantum Krylov methods. We highlight two features of QForte: (i) how the Python class structure of QForte enables the facile implementation of new algorithms, and (ii) how existing algorithms can be executed in just a few lines of code.

Experimental error mitigation using linear rescaling for variational quantum eigensolving with up to 20 qubits

Quantum computers have the potential to help solve a range of physics and chemistry problems, but noise in quantum hardware currently limits our ability to obtain accurate results from the execution of quantum-simulation algorithms. Various methods have been proposed to mitigate the impact of noise on variational algorithms, including several that model the noise as damping expectation values of observables. In this work, we benchmark various methods, including a new method proposed here. We compare their performance in estimating the ground-state energies of several instances of the 1D mixed-field Ising model using the variational-quantum-eigensolver algorithm with up to 20 qubits on two of IBM’s quantum computers. We find that several error-mitigation techniques allow us to recover energies to within 10% of the true values for circuits containing up to about 25 ansatz layers, where each layer consists of CNOT gates between all neighboring qubits and Y-rotations on all qubits.

Preparing Bethe Ansatz Eigenstates on a Quantum Computer

Several quantum many-body models in one dimension possess exact solutions via the Bethe ansatz method, which has been highly successful for understanding their behavior. Nevertheless, there remain physical properties of such models for which analytic results are unavailable, and which are also not well-described by approximate numerical methods. Preparing Bethe ansatz eigenstates directly on a quantum computer would allow straightforward extraction of these quantities via measurement. We present a quantum algorithm for preparing Bethe ansatz eigenstates of the spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain that correspond to real-valued solutions of the Bethe equations. The algorithm is polynomial in the number of T gates and circuit depth, with modest constant prefactors. Although the algorithm is probabilistic, with a success rate that decreases with increasing eigenstate energy, we employ amplitude amplification to boost the success probability. The resource requirements for our approach are lower than other state-of-the-art quantum simulation algorithms for small error-corrected devices, and thus may offer an alternative and computationally less-demanding demonstration of quantum advantage for physically relevant problems.
