Gaussian variational method to Fermi-Hubbard model in one and two dimensions

The study of ground-state properties of the Fermi-Hubbard model is a long-lasting task in the research of strongly correlated systems, and is crucial for the understanding of notable quantum phenomena including superconductivity and magnetism. Owing to the exponentially growing complexity of the system, a quantitative analysis usually demands high computational cost and is restricted to small samples, especially in two or higher dimensions. Here, we introduce a variational method in the frame of fermionic Gaussian states, and obtain the ground states of one- and two-dimensional attractive Hubbard models via imaginary-time evolution. We calculate the total energy and benchmark the results in a wide range of interaction strength and filling factor with those obtained via exact two-body results, the density matrix renormalization group based on matrix product states (MPS), and projector Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. For both 1D and 2D cases, the Gaussian variational method presents accurate results for total energy with a maximum systematic error in the intermediate interaction region. The accuracy of these results has negligible dependence on the system size. We further calculate the double occupancy and find excellent agreement with MPS and QMC, as well as the experimental results of cold quantum gases in optical lattices. The results suggest that the Gaussian pairing state is a good approximation to the ground states of attractive Hubbard model, in particular in the strong and weak coupling limits. Moreover, we generalize the method to the attractive Hubbard model with a finite spin-polarization, which can be mapped to the repulsive interaction case via particle-hole transformation, and obtain accurate results of ground state energy and double occupancy. Our work demonstrates the ability of the Gaussian variational method to extract ground state properties of strongly correlated many-body systems with negligible computational cost, especially of large size and in higher dimensions.

Confinement and Mott Transitions of Dynamical Charges in One-Dimensional Lattice Gauge Theories.

Confinement is an ubiquitous phenomenon when matter couples to gauge fields, which manifests itself in a linear string potential between two static charges. Although gauge fields can be integrated out in one dimension, they can mediate nonlocal interactions which in turn influence the paradigmatic Luttinger liquid properties. However, when the charges become dynamical and their densities finite, understanding confinement becomes challenging. Here we show that confinement in 1D Z_{2} lattice gauge theories, with dynamical matter fields and arbitrary densities, is related to translational symmetry breaking in a nonlocal basis. The exact transformation to this string-length basis leads us to an exact mapping of Luttinger parameters reminiscent of a Luther-Emery rescaling. We include the effects of local, but beyond contact, interactions between the matter particles, and show that confined mesons can form a Mott-insulating state when the deconfined charges cannot. While the transition to the Mott state cannot be detected in the Green's function of the charges, we show that the metallic state is characterized by hidden off-diagonal quasi-long-range order. Our predictions provide new insights to the physics of confinement of dynamical charges, and can be experimentally addressed in Rydberg-dressed quantum gases in optical lattices.

Finite-temperature transport in one-dimensional quantum lattice models

The last decade has witnessed an impressive progress in the theoretical understanding of transport properties of clean, one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. Many physically relevant models in one dimension are Bethe-ansatz integrable, including the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (also called spin-1/2 XXZ chain) and the Fermi-Hubbard model. Nevertheless, practical computations of, for instance, correlation functions and transport coefficients pose hard problems from both the conceptual and technical point of view. Only due to recent progress in the theory of integrable systems on the one hand and due to the development of numerical methods on the other hand has it become possible to compute their finite temperature and nonequilibrium transport properties quantitatively. Most importantly, due to the discovery of a novel class of quasilocal conserved quantities, there is now a qualitative understanding of the origin of ballistic finite-temperature transport, and even diffusive or super-diffusive subleading corrections, in integrable lattice models. We shall review the current understanding of transport in one-dimensional lattice models, in particular, in the paradigmatic example of the spin-1/2 XXZ and Fermi-Hubbard models, and we elaborate on state-of-the-art theoretical methods, including both analytical and computational approaches. Among other novel techniques, we discuss matrix-product-states based simulation methods, dynamical typicality, and, in particular, generalized hydrodynamics. We will discuss the close and fruitful connection between theoretical models and recent experiments, with examples from both the realm of quantum magnets and ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices.

A versatile microscope

Quantum Gases Quantum microscopes have been used for more than a decade now to image the many-body states of quantum gases in optical lattices. However, their resolution is limited to optical wavelengths, and they can typically image only a single layer of atoms. As a complementary technique for imaging quantum gases, Veit et al. developed an ion microscope. Atoms were first ionized by laser light, and the resulting ions were controlled using electrostatic lenses and imaged. Although the technique was demonstrated on rubidium atoms in their ground state, it is expected that it will also work on highly excited Rydberg atoms and will enable three-dimensional and time-dependent imaging. Topological Invariants for Quantum Quench Dynamics from Unitary Evolution.

Recent experiments began to explore the topological properties of quench dynamics, i.e., the time evolution following a sudden change in the Hamiltonian, via tomography of quantum gases in optical lattices. In contrast to the well-established theory for static band insulators or periodically driven systems, at present it is not clear whether, and how, topological invariants can be defined for a general quench of band insulators. Previous work solved a special case of this problem beautifully using Hopf mapping of two-band Hamiltonians in two dimensions. However, it only works for a topologically trivial initial state and is hard to generalize to multiband systems or other dimensions. Here we introduce the concept of loop unitary constructed from the unitary time-evolution operator and show its homotopy invariant fully characterizes the dynamical topology. For two-band systems in two dimensions, we prove that the invariant is precisely equal to the change in the Chern number across the quench, regardless of the initial state. We further show that the nontrivial dynamical topology manifests as hedgehog defects in the loop unitary and also as winding and linking of its eigenvectors along a curve where dynamical quantum phase transition occurs. This opens up a systematic route to classify and characterize quantum quench dynamics.

Microscopic characteristics and tomography scheme of the local Chern marker

The concept of the local Chern marker has gained a lot of attention especially in the field of ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices and artificial gauge fields. We investigate in further detail the microscopic real-space characteristics of the local Chern marker for the two-band Harper- Hofstadter-Hatsugai model and propose a tomographic scheme for the experimental detection of an approximate local Chern marker neglecting higher orders.

Deviations from Wick's theorem in the canonical ensemble

Wick's theorem for the expectation values of products of field operators for a system of noninteracting fermions or bosons plays an important role in the perturbative approach to the quantum many body problem. A finite temperature version holds in the framework of the grand canonical ensemble but not for the canonical ensemble appropriate for systems with fixed particle number like ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices. Here we present new formulas for expectation values of products of field operators in the canonical ensemble using a method in the spirit of Gaudin's proof of Wick's theorem for the grand canonical case. The deviations from Wick's theorem are examined quantitatively for two simple models of noninteracting fermions.

Colloquium: Atomic quantum gases in periodically driven optical lattices

Time periodic forcing in the form of coherent radiation is a standard tool for the coherent manipulation of small quantum systems like single atoms. In the last years, periodic driving has more and more also been considered as a means for the coherent control of many-body systems. In particular, experiments with ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices subjected to periodic driving in the lower kilohertz regime have attracted a lot of attention. Milestones include the observation of dynamic localization, the dynamic control of the quantum phase transition between a bosonic superfluid and a Mott insulator, as well as the dynamic creation of strong artificial magnetic fields and topological band structures. This article reviews these recent experiments and their theoretical description. Moreover, fundamental properties of periodically driven many-body systems are discussed within the framework of Floquet theory, including heating, relaxation dynamics, anomalous topological edge states, and the response to slow parameter variations.

Temporal decay of Néel order in the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model

Motivated by recent experiments with ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices we study the decay of the staggered moment in the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model starting from a perfect N\'eel state using exact diagonalization and the infinite-system-size time-evolving-block-decimation method. This extends previous work in which the same problem has been addressed for pure spin Hamiltonians. As a main result, we show that the relaxation dynamics of the double occupancy and of the staggered moment are different. The former is controlled by the nearest-neighbor tunneling rate while the latter is much slower and strongly dependent on the interaction strength, indicating that spin excitations are important. This difference in characteristic energy scales for the fast charge dynamics and the much slower spin dynamics is also reflected in the real-time evolution of nearest-neighbor density and spin correlations. A very interesting time dependence emerges in the von Neumann entropy, which at short times increases linearly with a slope proportional to the tunneling matrix element while the long-time growth of entanglement is controlled by spin excitations. Our predictions for the different relaxation dynamics of the staggered moment and the double occupancy should be observable in state-of-the-art optical lattice experiments. We further compare time averages of the double occupancy to the expectation values in both the canonical and diagonal ensembles, which quantitatively disagree with each other on finite systems. We relate the question of thermalization to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

Probing an ultracold-atom crystal with matter waves

Atomic quantum gases in optical lattices serve as a versatile testbed for important concepts of modern condensed-matter physics. The availability of methods to characterize strongly correlated phases is crucial for the study of these systems. Diffraction techniques to reveal long-range spatial structure, which may complement \emph{in situ} detection methods, have been largely unexplored. Here we experimentally demonstrate that Bragg diffraction of neutral atoms can be used for this purpose. Using a one-dimensional Bose gas as a source of matter waves, we are able to infer the spatial ordering and on-site localization of atoms confined to an optical lattice. We also study the suppression of inelastic scattering between incident matter waves and the lattice-trapped atoms, occurring for increased lattice depth. Furthermore, we use atomic de Broglie waves to detect forced antiferromagnetic ordering in an atomic spin mixture, demonstrating the suitability of our method for the non-destructive detection of spin-ordered phases in strongly correlated atomic gases.

Trapped ultracold bosons in periodically modulated lattices

Motivated by the recent rapid development of the field of quantum gases in optical lattices, we present a comprehensive study of the spectrum of ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice subjected to a periodic lattice modulation. Using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method, we study the dynamical response due to lattice modulations in different quantum phases of the system with varying density. For the Mott insulating state, we identify several excitation processes, which provide important information about the density profile of the gases. For the superfluid, the dynamical response can be well described in a local density approximation. This simplification can be valuable in understanding the strong-correlated superfluid in a slow-varying harmonic potential. All these spectroscopic features of an inhomogeneous system can be used as a test for the validity of the Bose-Hubbard model in a parabolic trapping potential.

Probing Nearest-Neighbor Correlations of Ultracold Fermions in an Optical Lattice

We demonstrate a probe for nearest-neighbor correlations of fermionic quantum gases in optical lattices. It gives access to spin and density configurations of adjacent sites and relies on creating additional doubly occupied sites by perturbative lattice modulation. The measured correlations for different lattice temperatures are in good agreement with an ab initio calculation without any fitting parameters. This probe opens new prospects for studying the approach to magnetically ordered phases.

Exploring strongly correlated quantum many‐body systems with ultracold atoms in optical lattices

AbstractUltracold quantum gases in optical lattices can be used as novel model system for the exploration of strongly correlated many‐body phases of bosonic or fermionic particles. Here we report on the realization of metallic, Mott‐insulating and band insulating phases in ultracold spin mixtures of fermionic 40K atoms. The experimental results are compared to ab initio dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations.

Mesoscopic effects in quantum phases of ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices

We present a wide array of quantum measures on numerical solutions of 1D Bose- and Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonians for finite-size systems with open boundary conditions. Finite size effects are highly relevant to ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices, where an external trap creates smaller effective regions in the form of the celebrated "wedding cake" structure and the local density approximation is often not applicable. Specifically, for the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we calculate number, quantum depletion, local von-Neumann entropy, generalized entanglement or Q-measure, fidelity, and fidelity susceptibility; for the Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian we also calculate the pairing correlations, magnetization, charge-density correlations, and antiferromagnetic structure factor. Our numerical method is imaginary time propagation via time-evolving block decimation. As part of our study we provide a careful comparison of canonical vs. grand canonical ensembles and Gutzwiller vs. entangled simulations. The most striking effect of finite size occurs for bosons: we observe a strong blurring of the tips of the Mott lobes accompanied by higher depletion, and show how the location of the first Mott lobe tip approaches the thermodynamic value as a function of system size.

High-resolution scanning electron microscopy of an ultracold quantum gas

Our knowledge of ultracold quantum gases is strongly influenced by our ability to probe these objects. In situ imaging combined with single-atom sensitivity is an especially appealing scenario, as it can provide direct information on the structure and the correlations of such systems. For a precise characterization a high spatial resolution is mandatory. In particular, the perspective to study quantum gases in optical lattices makes a resolution well below one micrometre highly desirable. Here, we report on a novel microscopy technique, which is based on scanning electron microscopy and allows for the detection of single atoms inside a quantum gas with a spatial resolution of better than 150 nm. We document the great functionality of this technique by precise density measurements of a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate and the first experimental demonstration of single-site addressability in a submicrometre optical lattice. Electron microscopes are regularly used to resolve atoms in solid samples. It turns out that they can also be used to image atoms in a Bose–Einstein condensate—remarkably, without destroying the coherent properties of the condensate.

Ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices

Artificial crystals of light, consisting of hundreds of thousands of optical microtraps, are routinely created by interfering optical laser beams. These so-called optical lattices act as versatile potential landscapes to trap ultracold quantum gases of bosons and fermions. They form powerful model systems of quantum many-body systems in periodic potentials for probing nonlinear wave dynamics and strongly correlated quantum phases, building fundamental quantum gates or observing Fermi surfaces in periodic potentials. Optical lattices represent a fast-paced modern and interdisciplinary field of research.

Exploring quantum matter with ultracold atoms in optical lattices

Seventy years after Einstein's prediction, the seminal achievement of Bose–Einstein condensation in dilute atomic gases in 1995 has provided us with a new form of quantum matter. Such quantum matter can be described as a single giant matter wave. By loading it into an artificial periodic potential formed by laser light—a so-called optical lattice—it has become possible to probe matter far beyond the wave-like description. In a review of a series of experiments with ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices, we show that the granularity of the matter wave field, caused by the discreteness of atoms, gives rise to effects going beyond the simple single matter wave description. Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices have thereby opened novel possibilities for investigating strongly correlated many-particle phenomena of condensed matter physics and have opened new opportunities for quantum information processing with neutral atoms

Quantum gases in optical lattices

IMAGINE having an artificial substance in which you can control almost all aspects of the underlying periodic structure and the interactions between the atoms that make up this dream material. Such a substance would allow us to explore a whole range of fundamental phenomena that are extremely difficult – or impossible – to study in real materials. It may sound too good to be true, but over the last two years physicists have come extremely close to achieving this goal.
