Analyzing Quantum Error Resilience for Quantum Communication in Guided and Unguided Media

AbstractThis research examines quantum key distribution and its applications in guided and unguided quantum communication. The importance of secure communication in the quantum era requires a thorough exploration of both guided and unguided quantum communication strategies. The research aims to address the challenges posed by guided channels, such as fiber optics, and unguided channels, such as free‐space quantum communication. This study addresses existing knowledge gaps in quantum error resilience management and signal processing techniques in unguided quantum communication. Advanced quantum gate analysis, environmental noise analysis, and quantum channel modeling techniques are employed. The research presents key findings on the impact of gate imperfections on quantum error resilience in guided media, the influence of noise‐induced errors in unguided media, and a unified metric for assessing various error sources in guided channels. Additionally, the study analyses stabilizer codes and surface codes for error mitigation through quantum error correction strategies. Simulation results provide a benchmark for theoretical predictions and guide the refinement of quantum communication protocols. In this context, machine learning‐based error prediction is introduced as a cutting‐edge approach to enhance the robustness of quantum communication systems.

Security enhancement of amplitude-shift keying-type asymmetric quantum communication systems

Recently, we proposed an amplitude-shift keying asymmetric quantum communication system and evaluated its reliability when using the quasi-Bell state and two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TSVS) as an entangled light source. In this paper, we evaluate the security of the system and find that either security or reliability can be enhanced depending on the entangled light sources. We also consider an approach to enhance the security of the system as well as its reliability by increasing the number of signal modes. Interestingly, we find that the quasi-Bell state always performs better than the TSVS under certain conditions.

Phase locking and absolute frequency stabilization of laser sources for a Pr:YSO quantum memory

We propose a scheme to phase lock a quantum-memory control laser, frequency-conversion pump laser, and two-photon source over three octaves in frequency to operate a quantum memory. The absolute frequencies of the laser sources are determined based on a Doppler-free iodine hyperfine transition. The achieved relative frequency instability and uncertainty were ≤1 × 10–12 and 3 × 10–11, respectively, which are below the requirement for operating a Pr:YSO quantum memory. This scheme simplifies the instrumentation of laser sources in a quantum repeater, and increases the reliability of quantum communication systems.

Multi-vortex beams in nonlinear media with harmonic potential wells

As is well known, the vortex beams have significant potential applications in both quantum and classical communication systems. In this paper, we study the existence and robustness to propagation of families of multi-vortex waveforms, namely multi-vortex optical beams in nonlinear self-focusing cubic (Kerr) media with harmonic potential wells. The intensity patterns, phase structures, transverse energy flow, and gradient forces (upon micro-particles) of those multi-vortex beams are presented and we found that they are all different from those of the ordinary vortex beams. The evolution during propagation of the intensities and widths of the multi-vortex beams is investigated in detail. The obtained results show that the one-vortex beams have asymmetric patterns and spiral propagation trajectories, depending on the off-axis parameter of the vortices. The two-vortex beams and the higher than two-vortex waveforms have symmetric patterns, which rotate during propagation, and the rotation direction can be controlled by the sign of the topological charge.

Correlated noise enhancement of coherence and fidelity in coupled qubits

ABSTRACT It is generally assumed that environmental noise arising from thermal fluctuations are detrimental to preserving coherence and entanglement in a quantum system. In the simplest sense, dephasing and decoherence are tied to energy fluctuations driven by coupling between the system and the normal modes of the bath. Here, we explore the role of noise correlation in an open-loop model quantum communication system whereby the ‘sender’ and the ‘receiver’ are subject to local environments with various degrees of correlation or anti-correlation. We introduce correlation within the spectral density by solving multidimensional stochastic differential equations and introduce these into the Redfield equations of motion for the system density matrix. We find that correlation can enhance both the fidelity and purity of a maximally entangled (Bell) state. Moreover, by comparing the evolution of different initial Bell states, we show that one can effectively probe the correlation between two local environments. These observations may be useful in the design of high-fidelity quantum gates and communication protocols.

Branching bisimulation semantics for quantum processes

The qCCS model proposed by Feng et al. provides a powerful framework to describe and reason about quantum communication systems that could be entangled with the environment. However, they only studied weak bisimulation semantics. In this paper we propose a new branching bisimilarity for qCCS and show that it is a congruence. The new bisimilarity is based on the concept of ϵ-tree and preserves the branching structure of concurrent processes where both quantum and classical components are allowed. Furthermore, we present a polynomial time equivalence checking algorithm for the ground version of our branching bisimilarity.

Robust parallel laser driving of quantum dots for multiplexing of quantum light sources

Deterministic sources of quantum light (i.e. single photons or pairs of entangled photons) are required for a whole host of applications in quantum technology, including quantum imaging, quantum cryptography and the long-distance transfer of quantum information in future quantum networks. Semiconductor quantum dots are ideal candidates for solid-state quantum emitters as these artificial atoms have large dipole moments and a quantum confined energy level structure, enabling the realization of single photon sources with high repetition rates and high single photon purity. Quantum dots may also be triggered using a laser pulse for on-demand operation. The naturally-occurring size variations in ensembles of quantum dots offers the potential to increase the bandwidth of quantum communication systems through wavelength-division multiplexing, but conventional laser triggering schemes based on Rabi rotations are ineffective when applied to inequivalent emitters. Here we report the demonstration of the simultaneous triggering of >10 quantum dots using adiabatic rapid passage. We show that high-fidelity quantum state inversion is possible in a system of quantum dots with a 15 meV range of optical transition energies using a single broadband, chirped laser pulse, laying the foundation for high-bandwidth, multiplexed quantum networks.

Multispectral MoSi superconducting nanowire single photon detector

In this paper, a multispectral superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) with high absorption efficiency is designed. It consists of Ag reflector, two SiO layers, Si slot and MoSi nanowire. Considering two typical quantum communication wavelengths (1310 nm and 1550 nm), when filling factor is 30 %, numerical simulation results show that the absorption efficiency of SNSPD can be over 95 % at each wavelength separately, and over 86 % at two target wavelengths simultaneously after introducing the second SiO layer and adjusting the structure parameters. And when filling factor is set to 40 %, the results at two target wavelengths are over 93 % and a broadband absorption (>80 %) of 1140 nm–1600 nm appears. In addition, the polarization sensitivity of the two-SiO-layers SNSPD is analyzed. When filling factor is over 63 %, the SNSPD attains both high absorption efficiency and TM-TE polarization insensitivity at two target wavelengths. The results of this work may provide access to fabricate high-efficiency and multispectral SNSPDs, and find applications in quantum optics and quantum communication systems.

An efficient modeling workflow for high-performance nanowire single-photon avalanche detector

Single-photon detector (SPD), an essential building block of the quantum communication system, plays a fundamental role in developing next-generation quantum technologies. In this work, we propose an efficient modeling workflow of nanowire SPDs utilizing avalanche breakdown at reverse-biased conditions. The proposed workflow is explored to maximize computational efficiency and balance time-consuming drift-diffusion simulation with fast script-based post-processing. Without excessive computational effort, we could predict a suite of key device performance metrics, including breakdown voltage, dark/light avalanche built-up time, photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, and the deterministic part of timing jitter due to device structures. Implementing the proposed workflow onto a single InP nanowire and comparing it to the extensively studied planar devices and superconducting nanowire SPDs, we showed the great potential of nanowire avalanche SPD to outperform their planar counterparts and obtain as superior performance as superconducting nanowires, i.e. achieve a high photon detection efficiency of 70% with a dark count rate less than 20 Hz at non-cryogenic temperature. The proposed workflow is not limited to single-nanowire or nanowire-based device modeling and can be readily extended to more complicated two-/three dimensional structures.

Low-loss integrated dynamic polarization controller based on silicon photonics

<sec>A dynamic polarization controller (DPC) is an important component in fiber optic communication, optical imaging, and quantum technologies. The DPC can transform any input state of polarization (SOP) into any desired SOP to overcome polarization-related impairments resulting from high internally and externally induced birefringence. In this work, a low-loss silicon photonics-integrated DPC is designed and demonstrated experimentally. The whole chip is fabricated by using industry-standard silicon-on-insulator technology. Using the edge-coupling method, the coupler loss is reduced to less than 2 dB, and the total loss of DPC is reduced to 5.7 dB. Using a variable-step simulated annealing method, for a low-noise photodetector and high-static-extinction-ratio device, a dynamic polarization extinction ratio can reach more than 30 dB. The size of the DPC on the chip is 5.20 mm × 0.12 mm × 0.80 mm.</sec><sec>The DPC utilizes a 0°/45°/0°/45° structure, which can realize arbitrary polarization-based coordinate conversion with endless polarization control. The 0° and 45° transform structures and matrices are presented, and the principle of the 0° and 45° structures is explained in detail by using the Poincaré sphere.</sec><sec>A simulation using Lumerical is conducted to optimize the polarization rotator-splitter, which can transform the TM<sub>0</sub> mode light in one waveguide into the TE<sub>0</sub> mode light in the other waveguide while the TE<sub>0</sub> mode light in one waveguide remains unchanged. Based on the optimized structure, the static polarization extinction ratio of DPC can be measured to be a value greater than 40 dB.</sec><sec>The thermal phase shift (TPS) is characterized by using a Mach–Zehnder modulator. The length of the TPS is 400 μm, and the resistance of the metal heater is 2.00 kΩ. The maximum power consumed by the four TPSs is a total of 0.2 W. The modulation bandwidth of the DPC designed by our group is approximately 30 kHz. By considering an applied voltage of 5.6 V in the case of the TPS, the bandwidth–voltage product is 5.6 × 30 = 168 kHz·V.</sec><sec>To optimize the DPC parameters, such as the step length, electronic noise, and static polarization extinction ratio, numerical simulation results of the simulated annealing approach are analyzed in detail.</sec><sec>In conclusion, a low-loss silicon photonics-integrated DPC is designed and demonstrated experimentally. Classical clock synchronization for quantum communications using the quantum channel.

We present a time synchronization method for correlation of photon arrival times for quantum communication. The method employs a low-power, low-frequency synchronization beacon that shares the quantum channel and is detected using the same single-photon detectors already present in the quantum communication system. We show experimentally that the system jitter approaches the system resolution limit with negligible impact on the quantum channel in realistic use cases. The presented method is particularly suitable for long distance quantum communication with large clock drifts, such as quantum links involving satellites.

Wavelength-Sensitive Superconducting Single-Photon Detectors on Thin Film Lithium Niobate Waveguides.

Lithium niobate, because of its nonlinear and electro-optical properties, is one of the materials of choice for photonic applications. The development of nanostructuring capabilities of thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) permits fabrication of small footprint, low-loss optical circuits. With the recent implementation of on-chip single-photon detectors, this architecture is among the most promising for realizing on-chip quantum optics experiments. In this Letter, we report on the implementation of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) based on NbTiN on 300 nm thick TFLN ridge nano-waveguides. We demonstrate a waveguide-integrated wavelength meter based on the photon energy dependence of the superconducting detectors. The device operates at the telecom C- and L-bands and has a footprint smaller than 300 × 180 μm2 and critical currents between ∼12 and ∼14 μA, which ensures operation with minimum heat dissipation. Our results hold promise for future densely packed on-chip wavelength-multiplexed quantum communication systems.

Practical Real-Time Phase Drift Compensation Scheme for Quantum Communication Systems.

Quantum communication systems are susceptible to various perturbations and drifts arising from the operational environment, with phase drift being a crucial challenge. In this paper, we propose an efficient real-time phase drift compensation scheme in which only existing data from the quantum communication process is used to establish a stable closed-loop control subsystem for phase tracking. This scheme ensures the continuous operation of transmission by tracking and compensating for phase drift in the phase-encoding quantum communication system. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed scheme with an average quantum bit error rate of 1.60% and a standard deviation of 0.0583% for 16 h of continuous operation.

Multiple transparency windows in an atom-assisted Laguerre–Gaussian rovibrational cavity

An atom-assisted Laguerre–Gaussian rovibrational cavity is proposed to demonstrate the characteristics of the output probe field. The cavity comprises a fixed and moving mirror with a two-level qubit inside it, and the moving mirror can vibrate and rotate simultaneously. The addition of the qubit affects the output probe field properties, and the study explores the impact of various parameters on transparency windows. The article reports a new discovery of triple-transparency windows in a single-cavity system. The study also investigates the slow and fast light propagation in the output probe field and discusses the Stokes and anti-Stokes powers in the proposed cavity system. The findings have implications for the development of future optical devices and quantum communication systems.

Fiber-coupled plug-and-play heralded single photon source based on Ti:LiNbO3 and polymer technology.

A reliable, but cost-effective generation of single-photon states is key for practical quantum communication systems. For real-world deployment, waveguide sources offer optimum compatibility with fiber networks and can be embedded in hybrid integrated modules. Here, we present what we believe to be the first chip-size fully integrated fiber-coupled heralded single photon source (HSPS) module based on a hybrid integration of a nonlinear lithium niobate waveguide into a polymer board. Photon pairs at 810 nm (signal) and 1550 nm (idler) are generated via parametric down-conversion pumped at 532 nm in the LiNbO3 waveguide. The pairs are split in the polymer board and routed to separate output ports. The module has a size of (2 × 1) cm2 and is fully fiber-coupled with one pump input fiber and two output fibers. We measure a heralded second-order correlation function of g h(2)=0.05 with a heralding efficiency of η h=3.5% at low pump powers.

Theory and computation of Markovian quantum antenna systems

We describe a general framework for the modeling and analysis of Markovian quantum antenna systems viewed as a special problem in quantum stochastic dynamics. The quantum radiator, which can be used to spatially direct radiated quantum states in future quantum communication systems, is modeled as an open quantum system capable of controlling the composition of its radiation modes through external source manipulations while in continuous interaction with the surrounding thermal and random environments. Our analysis and computational methods are based on deploying the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad (GKSL) master equation to account for environment-induced jump processes such as quantum dissipation and decoherence. We construct a definition of the quantum antenna directivity inspired by the corresponding formulas in classical antenna theory and present several versions of the quantum directivity formula. As a computational example, we study the flow of the density operator of a coupled two-level quantum dot (qubit) array, excited by classical external signals with variable amplitude and phase, which is evolved in time using the quantum master equation. It is shown that by manipulating the amplitude and phase excitations of individual quantum dots, one may significantly enhance the directive radiation properties of the Markovian quantum antenna system.

Generation of a time–bin Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state with an optical switch

Multipartite entanglement is a critical resource in quantum information processing that exhibits much richer phenomenon and stronger correlations than in bipartite systems. This advantage is also reflected in its multi-user applications. Although many demonstrations have used photonic polarization qubits, polarization-mode dispersion confines the transmission of photonic polarization qubits through an optical fiber. Consequently, time–bin qubits have a particularly important role to play in quantum communication systems. Here, we generate a three-photon time–bin Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state using a 2 × 2 optical switch as a time-dependent beam splitter to entangle time–bin Bell states from a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source and a weak coherent pulse. To characterize the three-photon time–bin GHZ state, we performed measurement estimation, showed a violation of the Mermin inequality, and used quantum state tomography to fully reconstruct a density matrix, which shows a state fidelity exceeding 70%. We expect that our three-photon time–bin GHZ state can be used for long-distance multi-user quantum communication.

Atomically Precise Detection and Manipulation of Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Nanodiamonds.

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds are a promising quantum communication system offering robust and discrete single photon emission, but a more thorough understanding of properties of the NV centers is critical for real world implementation in functional devices. The first step to understanding how factors such as surface, depth, and charge state affect NV center properties is to directly characterize these defects on the atomic scale. Here we use Angstrom-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to identify a single NV center in a ∼4 nm natural nanodiamond through simultaneous acquisition of electron energy loss and energy dispersive X-ray spectra, which provide a characteristic NV center peak and a nitrogen peak, respectively. In addition, we identify NV centers in larger, ∼15 nm synthetic nanodiamonds, although without the single-defect resolution afforded by the lower background of the smaller natural nanodiamonds. We have further demonstrated the potential to directly position these technologically relevant defects at the atomic scale using the scanning electron beam to "herd" NV centers and nitrogen atoms across their host nanodiamonds.
