The performance of optic disc-macula distance to disc-diameter ratio in qualitative and quantitative assessment of the optic disc size.

We aimed to evaluate the performance of the optic disc-macula distance to disc-diameter ratio (DM/DD) in qualitative and quantitative assessment of optic disc size. In 300 apparently normal eyes, we determined the correlation between DM/DD and the planimetric disc area (DA) and evaluated the performance of DM/DD in discriminating between small and large discs. The ability of DM/DD to predict the actual DA was validated in a separate cohort of 200 eyes. The disc size in eyes with glaucoma or related diseases was compared with DA- or DM/DD-based disc size. The DM/DD and its square of inverse (DD2/DM2) showed excellent non-linear and linear correlations, respectively, with DA (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively), demonstrating their performance in discriminating between small (<2.04 mm2) and large (>2.94 mm2) disc sizes with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.901 and 0.959, respectively. The difference between the predicted DA and planimetric DA was within ±10% in more than 80% of the eyes. Eyes with suspected and normal-tension glaucoma exhibited larger discs (p < 0.01) when evaluated using both DM/DD and DA. The variation in disc-macula distance seemed to be a confounding factor for DM/DD in inferring the precise disc size. DM/DD, which can be easily calculated from various kinds of fundus photographs or images, was an excellent and interchangeable tool for qualitative and quantitative assessment of disc size, which did not require correction for ocular magnification.

Integrated physical safety–cyber security risk assessment based on layers of protection analysis

The extensive application of information technology in process industries has increased production efficiency but has also introduced new risks. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically analyse the risks within factories to ensure the stable operation of their production systems. This study proposes an integrated risk assessment method based on layers of protection analysis (LOPA), which combines physical safety and cyber security analyses to provide comprehensive risk assessments for the process industry. The method first identifies the hazardous scenarios and protection layers relevant to a process facility. It then identifies potential cyberattack types and existing countermeasures. Subsequently, the functional impacts of attacks on protection layers and potential coupling relationships are discussed. Using common vulnerability scoring system (CVSS) and semi-quantitative methods, the probability of attack is determined to optimize the probability of failure on demand (PFD) of the protection layers. Finally, a case study of a steam separator in a catalytic cracking unit is used to quantitatively explore the potential attacks and risks of coupled protection layers. The application of Bayesian network (BN) is used for further validation of the method. This study offers a novel quantitative tool for risk assessment in the process industry, which can enhance the security and reliability of industrial production and control systems.

Vaccine Hesitancy and COVID-19 Risk Behaviors Associated with Social Media Use in Japan

ABSTRACT We examined the associations between the use of different types of media and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, as well as risk behaviors of COVID-19 infection, in Japan in late 2021. Cross-sectional surveys were conducted using rapid online surveys of residents in Iwate Prefecture from February 5 to 7, 2021, and from October 1 to 3, 2021. Each individual’s risk of acquiring SARS-CoV-2 infection was calculated using a quantitative assessment tool (the microCOVID). Intention to get vaccinated for COVID-19 was assessed by self-report. Usage of five types of media for obtaining COVID-related information was assessed: (1) newspapers, (2) television or radio, (3) internet or news apps, (4) social network services (SNS) (excluding LINE, a popular messaging app), and (5) other. Reliance on SNS did not show significant associations with either intention to get vaccinated or engaging in risky behavior for acquiring COVID-19. Although users of the internet or news apps were marginally significantly less likely to engage in high-risk behavior, significant associations between vaccine hesitancy and the usage of the internet or news apps were found in the middle age and elderly groups (OR [95% confidence interval (CI)] in middle age: 1.55 [1.07–2.23]; in elderly; 9.24 [3.28–26.02]). The differential associations between different types of media use and COVID-19 prevention behaviors may assist in preparing for future pandemic outbreaks. One implication for public health risk communication is audience segmentation, such as emphasizing vaccine safety and effectiveness for older audiences.

Association between dietary inflammatory index and all-cause mortality in US adults with dermatitis: a population-based cohort study.

While dermatitis management is primarily symptomatic, the role of diet in symptom exacerbation and improvement is increasingly recognized. The dietary inflammatory index (DII), a quantitative assessment tool for dietary inflammatory potential, has been associated with various chronic diseases but remains understudied in dermatitis. This cohort study investigated the association between DII scores and all-cause mortality among patients with dermatitis. The study included 1,074 patients with dermatitis and complete dietary intake records from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004. The DII scores were calculated using two 24-h dietary recalls and dietary supplement intakes and the consumption of 28 foods with known pro- or anti-inflammatory properties. All-cause mortality information was from the National Death Index, censored on December 31, 2019. Multivariable Cox hazards regression models, restricted cubic spline (RCS) models, and subgroup analyses were employed to evaluate the association of DII with all-cause mortality, adjusting for potential confounders. The 1,074 patients were divided into DII tertiles (T1: n = 358, median age 40 years, DII -3.91, 0.06; T2: n = 296, median age 40 years, DII 0.06, 1.88; T3: n = 237, median age 39 years, DII 1.88, 4.39). The study revealed a positive correlation between higher DII scores and increased all-cause mortality risk among patients with dermatitis (fully-adjusted model, HR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.02, 1.27, p = 0.026). This association was more pronounced in adults over 45 years, with the highest DII tertile indicating a 2.42-fold increased mortality risk (95% CI 1.15, 5.07, p = 0.019) compared with the lowest tertile. The RCS model confirmed a linear dose-response trend (p for non-linear = 0.183), validating the relationship. Elevated DII scores are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with dermatitis, suggesting that the dietary inflammatory potential may impact health outcomes in this population. The findings underscore the importance of dietary interventions in dermatitis management, especially for middle-aged and older adults. Future research with larger cohorts and a longer follow-up is warranted to validate the findings.

Predictors of Pandemic Impact in a Rural Community: Survey Results from a Community Partnership to Support Health and Well-Being.

Rural communities have struggled to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite slower spread at the start of the pandemic in these areas, by 2021, they experienced higher death and hospitalization rates compared with urban areas. Increased mental health issues including stress, depression, and anxiety were also reported in rural areas following the start of the pandemic. Young people in these communities were significantly impacted by COVID-19, reporting increased stress and mental health issues. To examine the effects of COVID-19 on these local rural communities, authors conducted a survey in coordination with their community partners. The survey was completed by 119 participants across three rural counties and included 69 questions from the Pandemic Stress Index and the World Health Organization COVID-19 Rapid Quantitative Assessment Tool. Authors' results indicated that age, depression, and anxiety were predictors of higher self-reported COVID-19 impact. The strongest predictor of high pandemic impact in the sample was the combination of depression and anxiety symptoms. Authors used these results to inform their partners about the need for increased mental health services that are tailored for young adults in their communities. More research is needed to determine which services will be most beneficial and how to best reach those in need. Social workers in both public health and mental health settings are poised to help.

The Development of a Quantitative Disability Assessment Tool in Patients with Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: The objective of this study was to develop a novel quantitative disability assessment tool for patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). Methods: A total of 47 patients with IPD were recruited from two hospitals. A specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine utilized the modified Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living Scale (mSEADL) as a reference, conducting a comprehensive medical chart review and an in-depth interview. The novel-developed disability measurement was calculated as ((mSEADL during the on-state) × (time of on-state)) + ((mSEADL during the off-state) × (time of off-state))/(waking time). Additionally, the degree of disability was assessed using the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index during the on-state. Results: Twenty-four participants (51.1%) exhibited the off-state during waking hours. In patients exhibiting an off-state, the mSEADL score was significantly lower during the off-state than during the on-state (p < 0.05). The novel-developed disability measurement demonstrated a higher correlation coefficient with the reference mSEADL (0.960) than with the K-MBI (0.808), with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results demonstrated that larger IPD patients exhibited an on-off phenomenon with greater dependency during the off-state. Therefore, the on-off phenomenon should be considered when evaluating disability in patients with IPD, with methods such as the novel-developed disability measurement tool in this study.

Flynotyper 2.0: an updated tool for rapid quantitative assessment of Drosophila eye phenotypes.

About two-thirds of the genes in the Drosophila melanogaster genome are also involved in its eye development, making the Drosophila eye an ideal system for genetic studies. We previously developed Flynotyper, a software that uses image processing operations to identify and quantify the degree of roughness by measuring disorderliness of ommatidial arrangement in the fly eye. This software has enabled researchers to quantify morphological defects of thousands of eye images caused by genetic perturbations. Here, we present Flynotyper 2.0, a software that has an updated computer vision library, improved performance, and a streamlined pipeline for high-throughput analysis of multiple eye images. We also tested several batches of Drosophila eye images to ensure robustness and reproducibility of the updated Flynotyper 2.0 software.

Ensuring Information Security of Information Systems to be Integrated Based on Trust

Relevance. Information systems are integrated with each other, which leads to the need to ensure the protection of the integrated system. The level of trust requires formalizing the concept of trust and studying its nature and structure.The purpose of the article is to remove the contradiction between the needs to provide access to the resources of the resulting integrated system and ensure compliance with the information security requirements of each of the integrated systems by formulating the concept of trust from the information security perspective. Methods used: systems analysis, risk management theory, resolutions, iSoft operator equation synthesis method.Results. Main shortcomings of existing approaches to the formalization of the concept of “trust” are identified. Based on the FIST information system model, a functional trust structure has been developed and formalized in IDEF0 notation for all levels of integrated information systems: supporting level, personnel level, hardware and software levels. Examples of violation of trust and examples of tools for creating trust for each level of the information system are given. The adequacy of the model is illustrated by the example of real integration of information systems. Application of the proposed trust model made it possible to identify features that increase information security risks for the integrated information system from the example. Novelty. An interpretation of trust as a measure of information security is proposed, in contrast to “risk” as a measure of danger. A tool for quantitative assessment of trust is proposed. A necessary and sufficient condition for creating maximum trust in an information system is formulated and proven by the resolution method Practical significance. The proposed trust model can be used in the development of guidance documents regulating the process of integration of information systems, in setting requirements for service personnel and creating training programs for them, for developing information security tools and methods for their application.

Methodological Aspect of Evaluating the Effectiveness of Public Policy in Depressed Regions

The paper considers the practical possibilities of using various methods of qualitative and quantitative assessment of the effectiveness of public policy implementation, detailed in the context of the problem of depressed regions rehabilitation. The aim of the study is to form a holistic and comprehensive model that allows analyzing the effectiveness of the implementation of state projects at the regional level, taking into account the specific features inherent in the economic and administrative spheres of the depressed subjects of the Russian Federation. The relevance of the research topic to these conditions is defined by the dynamic nature of the development of regional depression, as well as the need to improve public administration mechanisms in order to solve urgent problems of socio-economic development of regions and ensure opportunities for sustainable and balanced spatial development of the Russian Federation. The development of this topic includes the use of methods of retrospective statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, as well as abstraction and socio-economic comparison. Based on the results of the study, a theoretical concept has been formed, including a methodological apparatus that allows evaluating the effectiveness of existing models of public administration for the development of depressed regions. The conclusions obtained at the theoretical level are concretized in the context of a practice-oriented analysis of the state and prospects of development of the depressed region — the Ulyanovsk region; the results of the analysis fully prove the validity of the proposed methodological developments. Based on the results of the study, a number of practical conclusions were made, in particular, in the context of analyzing the effectiveness of public policy, the role of integrated non-financial quantitative assessment tools was updated, as well as a number of aspects of their practical application and further improvement were specified. The prospects for further use of the proposed evaluation model are related to the possibility of its implementation into the structure of software and analytical complexes currently used in public administration practice. The results of the study are of practical importance in the context of the possibilities of optimizing the control and evaluation functions of public authorities and, in particular, can be used by subjects of state strategic planning for the formation and subsequent assessment of territorial development plans of the Russian Federation.

Comparison of metrics for assessing face washing behaviour for trachoma control.

There is currently no single, easy-to-use, reliable indicator to assess whether a face has been washed with soap in the context of trachoma elimination. This study aimed to compare survey report, script-based pictorial recall and facial cleanliness indicators as alternatives to structured observation for measuring face washing behaviour. This method validation study was nested in the Stronger-SAFE trial, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Structured observation was conducted in randomly selected households for three hours from dawn. The primary caregiver in each household participated in a survey to capture (self)-reported behaviour and/or script-based pictorial recall, a routine-based diary activity to covertly capture information on face washing behaviour of themself and any children aged 1-12. Children 4-12 years old directly participated in the survey and pictorial recall in a subset of households. The facial cleanliness of children aged 1-12 was assessed qualitatively and using the quantitative Personal Hygiene Assessment Tool (qPHAT). Prevalence estimates, sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were computed for each behavioural indicator with observation data as the gold standard. The appropriateness of script-based pictorial recall was assessed using baseline and 3-month follow-up data. Baseline data were collected from 204 households in 68 clusters. Survey estimates of face washing and face washing with soap among caregivers and children were 32% to 60% and 5% to 31% higher than observed behaviour, respectively. Face washing prevalence estimates from pictorial recall were lower than survey estimates and comparable with observations for some face washing with soap indicators (0.3% to 13% higher than observations). Specificity of pictorial recall indicators was high (85% to 99%), but the sensitivity was low (0% to 67%), resulting in a low positive predictive value for all indicators. Both qualitative facial cleanliness indicators and qPHAT scores were poorly correlated with observed face washing earlier that morning. Pictorial recall overestimated face washing with soap among both caregivers and children following intervention delivery but not at baseline. Survey (self)-reported data on face washing is highly inaccurate. Script-based pictorial recall does not correctly classify those who wash their face with soap, and is subject to differential bias following intervention exposure, and facial cleanliness is a poor indicator of recent face washing in settings where faces become rapidly dirty again after washing. Alternatives to structured observation cannot be recommended to monitor the effectiveness of face washing interventions in community settings. THE IMPACT OF HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT ON ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

Modern society is faced with many environmental problems that require the development of new, most effective solutions, which can be implemented through the development of the level of human capital, since the main result of its development is the use of accumulated knowledge and competencies in order to obtain rent and solve the most important socio-­economic problems. However, despite the importance and relevance of solving environmental problems, today methods for assessing the impact of human capital on environmental activities are beyond the achievements of modern economists. The purpose of this study is to propose a method for quantitative assessment of the influence of human capital on the development of environmental activities. The main hypothesis is that the development of human capital is the main driver of the development of environmental activities. The information base for the study was the data from the official statistical collection of the Federal State Statistics Service for the period 2015–2022, which determines the representativeness and reliability of the study conducted by the author. A tool for quantitative assessment of the influence of the dynamics of human capital development on the dynamics of financing environmental activities is proposed — ​the coefficient of the influence of human capital on environmental activities. Based on the correlation and regression analysis carried out, an assessment was made of the influence of the dynamics of human capital development on environmental activities, and the importance of the development of education as the main component of human capital was determined. The proposed regression model allows for a quantitative assessment of the impact of human capital development on environmental activities. This will be useful for assessing the effectiveness of environmental activities.

Quantifying remediation of chlorinated volatile compounds by sulfidated nano zerovalent iron treatment using numerical modeling and CSIA

Sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has demonstrated promising reactivity and longevity for remediating chlorinated volatile compounds (cVOC) contaminants in laboratory tests. However, its effectiveness in field applications remains inadequately evaluated. This study provides the first quantitative evaluation of the long-term effectiveness of carboxymethyl cellulose-stabilized S-nZVI (CMC-S-nZVI) at a cVOC-contaminated field site. A reactive transport model-based numerical approach delineates the change in cVOC concentrations and carbon isotope values (i.e., δ13C from compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA)) caused by dissolution of dense non-aqueous phase liquid, sorption, and pathway-specific degradation and production, respectively. This delineation reveals quantitative insights into remediation effectiveness typically difficult to obtain, including extent of degradation, contributions of different degradation pathways, and degradation rate coefficients. Significantly, even a year after CMC-S-nZVI application, degradation remains an important process effectively removing various cVOC contaminants (i.e., chlorinated ethenes, 1,2-dichloroethanes, and chlorinated methanes) at an extent varying from 5 %-62 %. Although the impacts of CMC-S-nZVI abundance on degradation vary for different cVOC and for different sampling locations at the site, for the primary site contaminants of tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene, their predominance of dichloroelimination pathway (≥ 88 %), high degradation rate coefficient (0.4–1.7 d-1), and occurrence at locations with relatively high CMC-S-nZVI abundance strongly indicate the effectiveness of abiotic remediation. These quantitative assessments support that CMC-S-nZVI supports sustainable ZVI-based remediation. Further, the novel numerical approach presented in this study provides a powerful tool for quantitative cVOC remediation assessments at complex field sites where multiple processes co-occur to control both concentration and CSIA data.

Application and research progress of magnetic resonance proton density fat fraction in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a comprehensive review.

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), formerly known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is a chronic liver disorder associated with disturbances in lipid metabolism. The disease is prevalent worldwide, particularly closely linked with metabolic syndromes such as obesity and diabetes. Magnetic Resonance Proton Density Fat Fraction (MRI-PDFF), serving as a non-invasive and highly quantitative imaging assessment tool, holds promising applications in the diagnosis and research of MASLD. This paper aims to comprehensively review and summarize the applications and research progress of MRI-PDFF technology in MASLD, analyze its strengths and challenges, and anticipate its future developments in clinical practice.

Time budgets and weight shifting as indicators of pain in hospitalized horses.

Pain assessment in horses presents a significant challenge due to their nonverbal nature and their tendency to conceal signs of discomfort in the presence of potential threats, including humans. Therefore, this study aimed to identify pain-associated behaviors amenable to automated AI-based detection in video recordings. Additionally, it sought to determine correlations between pain intensity and behavioral and postural parameters by analyzing factors such as time budgets, weight shifting, and unstable resting. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the development of AI-based quantitative tools for pain assessment in horses. A cohort of 20 horses (mean age 15 ± 8) admitted to a university equine hospital underwent 24-h video recording. Behaviors were manually scored and retrospectively analyzed using Loopy® software. Three pain groups were established based on the Pain Score Vetmeduni Vienna : pain-free (P0), mild to moderate pain (P1), and severe pain (P2). Weight shifting emerged as a reliable indicator for discriminating between painful and pain-free horses, with significant differences observed between pain groups (p < 0.001) and before and after administration of analgesia. Additionally, severely painful horses (P2 group) exhibited lower frequencies of feeding and resting standing per hour compared to pain-free horses, while displaying a higher frequency of unstable resting per hour. The significant differences observed in these parameters between pain groups offer promising prospects for AI-based analysis and automated pain assessment in equine medicine. Further investigation is imperative to establish precise thresholds. Leveraging such technology has the potential to enable more effective pain detection and management in horses, ultimately enhancing welfare and informing clinical decision-making in equine medicine.

Tumor response assessment in hepatocellular carcinoma treated with immunotherapy: imaging biomarkers for clinical decision-making.

To compare the performance of 1D and 3D tumor response assessment for predicting median overall survival (mOS) in patients who underwent immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients with HCC who underwent immunotherapy between 2017 and 2023 and received multi-phasic contrast-enhanced MRIs pre- and post-treatment were included in this retrospective study. Tumor response was measured using 1D, RECIST 1.1, and mRECIST, and 3D, volumetric, and percentage quantitative EASL (vqEASL and %qEASL). Patients were grouped into disease control vs progression and responders vs non-responders. Kaplan-Meier curves analyzed with log-rank tests assessed the predictive value for mOS. Cox regression modeling evaluated the association of clinical baseline parameters with mOS. This study included 37 patients (mean age, 69.1 years [SD, 8.0]; 33 men). The mOS was 16.9 months. 3D vqEASL and %qEASL successfully stratified patients into disease control and progression (vqEASL: HR 0.21, CI: 0.55-0.08, p < 0.001; %qEASL: HR 0.18, CI: 0.83-0.04, p = 0.013), as well as responder and nonresponder (vqEASL: HR 0.25, CI: 0.08-0.74, p = 0.007; %qEASL: HR 0.17, CI: 0.04-0.72, p = 0.007) for predicting mOS. The 1D criteria, mRECIST stratified into disease control and progression only (HR 0.24, CI: 0.65-0.09, p = 0.002), and RECIST 1.1 showed no predictive value in either stratification. Multivariate Cox regression identified alpha-fetoprotein > 500 ng/mL as a predictor for poor mOS (p = 0.04). The 3D quantitative enhancement-based response assessment tool qEASL can predict overall survival in patients undergoing immunotherapy for HCC and could identify non-responders. Using 3D quantitative enhancement-based tumor response criteria (qEASL), radiologists' predictions of tumor response in patients undergoing immunotherapy for HCC can be further improved. MRI-based tumor response criteria predict immunotherapy survival benefits in HCC patients. 3D tumor response assessment methods surpass current evaluation criteria in predicting overall survival during HCC immunotherapy. Enhancement-based 3D tumor response criteria are robust prognosticators of survival for HCC patients on immunotherapy.

Spatiotemporal Variations in Trophic Diversity of Fish Communities in a Marine Bay Ecosystem Based on Stable Isotope Analysis

Climate change has led to significant fluctuations in marine ecosystems. As a component of the food web, the trophic diversity and spatiotemporal changes of fish communities are crucial for understanding ecosystems. In recent years, stable isotope analysis has been increasingly used as a comprehensive tool for quantitative assessment of trophic diversity to explore spatiotemporal variations in fish community diversity. This study is based on carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis using different biomass-weighted isotope diversity indices, including isotopic divergence index (IDiv), isotopic dispersion index (IDis), isotopic evenness index (IEve), and isotopic uniqueness index (IUni). The overall results indicate that IDis, IEve, and IUni values of fish communities were relatively low, while IDiv was relatively high in the Haizhou Bay ecosystem. IDiv, IDis, IEve, and IUni were lower in autumn than in spring; IDiv and IDis were relatively higher in offshore waters, while IEve and IUni were relatively higher in inshore waters. The changes in species composition and intensive pelagic–benthic coupling in Haizhou Bay may lead to significant spatiotemporal variations in the trophic diversity of fish communities in the area. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating trophic relationships into ecosystem models, which will help to enhance our understanding of the complexity of the trophic structure of fish communities.

Quantitative Assessment of Acute Intracranial Clot and Collaterals on High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

There has been an increasing demand for imaging methods that provide a comprehensive evaluation of intracranial clot and collateral circulation, which are helpful for clinical decision-making and predicting functional outcomes. We aimed to quantitatively evaluate acute intracranial clot burden and collaterals on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI). We analyzed acute ischemic stroke patients with internal carotid artery or middle cerebral artery occlusion in a prospective multicenter study. The clot burden was scored on a scale of 0-10 based on the clot location on HR-MRI. The collateral score was assigned on a scale of 0-3 using the minimum intensity projection from HR-MRI. Uni- and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess their correlation with clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale &gt;2 at 90 days). Thresholds were defined to dichotomize into low- and high-score groups, and predictive performances were assessed for clinical and radiologic outcomes. Ninety-nine patients (mean age of 60.77 ± 11.54 years) were included in the analysis. The interobserver correlation was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.77-0.95) for the clot burden score and 0.78 (95% CI: 0.53-0.90) for the collateral score. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the collateral score (odds ratio: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.19-0.90) was significantly associated with clinical outcomes. A better functional outcome was observed in the group with clot burden scores greater than 7 (p = 0.011). A smaller final infarct size and a higher diffusion-weighted imaging-based Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score were observed in the group with collateral scores greater than 1 (all p &lt; 0.05). HR-MRI offers a new tool for quantitative assessment of clot burden and collaterals simultaneously in future clinical practices and research endeavors.

Forecasting potential invaders to prevent future biological invasions worldwide.

The ever-increasing and expanding globalisation of trade and transport underpins the escalating global problem of biological invasions. Developing biosecurity infrastructures is crucial to anticipate and prevent the transport and introduction of invasive alien species. Still, robust and defensible forecasts of potential invaders are rare, especially for species without known invasion history. Here, we aim to support decision-making by developing a quantitative invasion risk assessment tool based on invasion syndromes (i.e., generalising typical attributes of invasive alien species). We implemented a workflow based on 'Multiple Imputation with Chain Equation' to estimate invasion syndromes from imputed datasets of species' life-history and ecological traits and macroecological patterns. Importantly, our models disentangle the factors explaining (i) transport and introduction and (ii) establishment. We showcase our tool by modelling the invasion syndromes of 466 amphibians and reptile species with invasion history. Then, we project these models to amphibians and reptiles worldwide (16,236 species [c.76% global coverage]) to identify species with a risk of being unintentionally transported and introduced, and risk of establishing alien populations. Our invasion syndrome models showed high predictive accuracy with a good balance between specificity and generality. Unintentionally transported and introduced species tend to be common and thrive well in human-disturbed habitats. In contrast, those with established alien populations tend to be large-sized, are habitat generalists, thrive well in human-disturbed habitats, and have large native geographic ranges. We forecast that 160 amphibians and reptiles without known invasion history could be unintentionally transported and introduced in the future. Among them, 57 species have a high risk of establishing alien populations. Our reliable, reproducible, transferable, statistically robust and scientifically defensible quantitative invasion risk assessment tool is a significant new addition to the suite of decision-support tools needed for developing a future-proof preventative biosecurity globally.
