The orthopedics and sports medicine research in India from 2013 to 2022: Comparison with South Asia, European Union, China, and USA

Objectives: In the present study, we explored the research progress in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine within India and South Asia from 2013 to 2022. Materials and Methods: In November 2023, the data were retrieved from Scopus databases. Key indicators such as the number of publications, citations, citations per paper, field-weighted citation impact (FWCI), and distribution across journal quartiles were analyzed. Results: While India demonstrated a substantial contribution to the field, comparative analysis revealed it lags behind China, Europe, and the USA in both quantity and quality of research output. Specifically, India (6,498) and South Asia (6,983) exhibit lower scholarly outputs as compared with China (30,350), European Union (EU) (105,228), and the USA (100,041). Citations per publication reveal gaps, with the USA leading (17), followed by the EU (15.5), China (7.7), and India (7.6). FWCI placed the USA at 1.22, EU at 1.2, and lower values were noted for South Asia (0.74), India (0.70), and China (0.69). Conclusion: The distribution across quartiles indicated that India and South Asia’s comparatively lower emphasis on Q1 (21.30% and 21.72%, respectively), while the EU, China, and the USA demonstrated higher proportions (49.29%, 27.07%, and 53.05%). Conversely, in Q4, India and South Asia (15.04% and 14.87%) have higher concentrations, signaling a potential area for improving research quality. Recommendations include increased funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, investment in advanced technologies, and a focus on high-impact journals.

Emerging Trends in Virtual Surgical Planning for Orthognathic Surgery: A Global Overview of Research and Publication Patterns

PurposeAnticipating trends and pursuing innovative ideas are imperative for the advancement of science. The objective of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of three-dimensional (3D) virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, explore its implications for clinical practice, and identify future publication trends through digital tools. MethodsThis study employed a retrospective bibliometric analysis using data obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The search strategy focused on articles related to orthognathic surgery and virtual simulation techniques. RStudio and bibliometrix tools were used to data mining. The independent variables retrieved from digital analysis were the emerging themes related to virtual planning in orthognathic surgery. The trends that we identified were facial aesthetics, digital workflow, personalized treatments, and complex cases. The primary outcome variable was the number of publications dedicated to virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, along with secondary outcomes such as citation rates, language of publication, country of origin, institutional affiliations, and emerging research themes. Covariates included variables related to publication characteristics, author affiliations, and geographic distribution of publications. Publication analyses over time involved descriptive statistics, regression analysis, Pearson correlation tests, and graphical representation techniques. Statistical significance was set at a 95% confidence interval (P-value < 0.05). ResultsA comprehensive analysis of 987 articles reveals the impact of included authors, with a mean H-index of 62 (sd=18,4). The analysis further illuminates a discernible upward trend in publications on this subject, showcasing a linear pattern with a notable R2 value of 0.88 (p=0.021). English remains the predominant language of publication, accounting for 97.97% of articles, while contributions hailed from a diverse spectrum of 56 countries. Interestingly, a moderate correlation emerges between publication numbers and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita (r=0.30, p=0.044) and total area (r=0.30, p=0.032), whereas a more substantial correlation is evident with total population (r=0.61, p=0.034). Notably, the most cited article amassed 254 citations. Furthermore, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.97 underscores the correlation between citation density and the year of publication. ConclusionThe bibliometric indicators provided insights for evaluating research productivity and the quality of research output. Emerging themes included facial aesthetics, 3D printing, and the utilization of custom-made templates and implants. This study holds relevance for maxillofacial surgeons, academics, and researchers alike.

A Scientometric Study of Saudi PubMed-Indexed Endodontic Research.

Scientometric studies play a crucial role in quantitatively assessing the impact and quantity of scholarly articles, providing a basis for policy-making and informed decision-making processes. Given the ongoing transformation within the Saudi scientific community across various domains, it is essential to establish a baseline for high-quality endodontic research. A comprehensive search in the PubMed database, using the keywords ["Saudi" OR "Saudi Arabia"] within the time frame of 2014 to 2021. The screening process involved evaluating the title and abstract of each article, with only those classified as endodontic articles included for analysis in this study. The analysis included factors such as the type of paper, the authors, the citations, and the year of publication. Featuring one or more authors affiliated with a Saudi dental institution, 70 papers were specifically categorized as endodontic papers. The most prevalent type of paper was case reports, accounting for 27 articles (28%), followed by literature reviews with 13 articles (18%). The number of authors ranged from one to ten, with a general trend of increasing publication rates over the years. In terms of citations, only four papers received more than 20 citations, while the majority of papers garnered between one and ten citations. Most articles in the field of endodontics exhibited low-level evidence. Therefore, it is recommended that the quality of research output and evidence be enhanced.

ChatGPT and the AI revolution: a comprehensive investigation of its multidimensional impact and potential

PurposeThe aim of the study is to understand the transformative impact of ChatGPT on artificial intelligence (AI) research, its applications, implications, challenges and potential to shape future AI trends. The study also seeks to assess the relevance and quality of research output through citation and bibliographic coupling analysis.Design/methodology/approachThis study employed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to investigate the research trends, influential entities and leading contributors in the domain of AI, focusing on the ChatGPT model.FindingsThe analysis revealed a high prevalence of AI-related terms, indicating a significant interest in and engagement with ChatGPT in AI studies and applications. “Nature” and “Thorp H.H.” emerged as the most cited source and author, respectively, while the USA surfaced as the leading contributor in the field.Research limitations/implicationsWhile the findings provide a comprehensive overview of the ChatGPT research landscape, it is important to note that the conclusions drawn are only as current as the data used.Practical implicationsThe study highlights potential collaboration opportunities and signals areas of research that might benefit from increased focus or diversification. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners and policymakers for strategic planning and decision-making in AI research, specifically in relation to ChatGPT.Originality/valueThis study is one of the first to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the ChatGPT research domain, its multidimensional impact and potential. It offers valuable insights for a range of stakeholders in understanding the current landscape and future directions of ChatGPT in AI.

Do research performances of universities and disciplines in England converge or diverge? An assessment of the progress between research excellence frameworks in 2014 and 2021

Performance-based research funding systems (PBRFSs) have been used in selectively distributing research funding, increasing public money accountability and efficiency. Two recent such evaluations in England were called the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which took place in 2014 and 2021, and the research environment, outputs and impact of the research were evaluated. Even though various aspects of the REF were examined, there has been limited research on how the performance of the universities and disciplines changed between the two evaluation periods. This paper assesses whether there has been convergence or divergence in research quality across universities and subject areas between 2014 and 2021 and found that there was an absolute convergence between universities in all three research elements evaluated, and universities that performed relatively worse in REF in 2014 experienced higher growth in their performance between 2014 and 2021. There was also an absolute convergence in the research environment and impact across different subject areas, but there is no significant convergence in the quality of research outputs across disciplines. Our findings also highlight that there has been an absolute convergence in research quality within the universities (between different disciplines in a given university) and within disciplines (between universities in a given subject).

Mapping research over 50-years on odontogenic keratocyst: Global data and bibliometric profile analysis

Oral and maxillofacial pathology is a traditional matter of study. The objective of this research is to perform a bibliometric analysis of odontogenic keratocyst over a length of fifth years. A bibliographic search (retrospective study) in line with the STROBE guidelines and the concepts of the Leiden Manifesto was performed on the Web of Science using the term “odontogenic keratocyst”. A citation analysis as so authorship, and year of publication were performed. A graphical representation of the keywords was created with VOSviewer. These steps are essential to create this list and relate it to all published articles on the subject. A ranking was created in which the top 51 most frequently referred articles. Variables had been discussed individually. The USA leads the number of publications, followed by Brazil and England. A massive variety of publications refer to recurrence after treatment and its association with tumoral antigen expression. The importance of choosing suitable keywords was discussed. The bibliometric indicators validate records to evaluate the overall performance of studies productiveness and the quality of research output. This work provides a treasured reference for maxillofacial surgeons, oral pathologists, academics and researchers.

Universal research index: An inclusive metric to quantify scientific research output

Scientometrics and bibliometrics, the subfields of library and information science, deal with the quantity and quality of research outputs. Currently, various scientometric indices are being used to quantify and compare research outputs. The most widely known is the h-index. However, this index and its derivatives suffer from dependence on the mere count of a scholar's highly cited publications. To remedy this deficiency, we developed a novel index, the Universal Research Index (UR-Index) (https://usern2021.github.io/UR-Index/) by which every single publication has its own impact on the total score. We developed this index by surveying international top 1 % cited scientists in various disciplines and included additional component variables such as publication type, leading role of a scholar, co-author count, and source metrics to this scientometric index. We acknowledge that unconscious biases built into the component variables included in the UR-Index might put research from specific groups at a disadvantage, thus continued efforts to improve equitable scholarly impact in science and academia are encouraged.

Plagiarism conundrum in Kenyan universities: an impediment to quality research

PurposePlagiarism has been on the rise, mainly because of increased access to the internet and digital sources. To combat the threat of plagiarism, various universities have implemented countermeasures such as capacity building, anti-plagiarism policies and the purchase of anti-plagiarism software. In Kenya, there appears to be a lack of cohesion among universities in combating plagiarism, a situation that threatens teaching, learning and research if not addressed adequately. This paper aims to review and identify anti-plagiarism practices in Kenyan universities; it further proposed various best practices and policy actions that ought to be adopted to win the fight and the misperception of plagiarism.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a mixed-method approach by surveying the librarians and interviewing the graduate school directors or deans to establish the strength and challenges in implementing plagiarism measures in the universities in Kenya. Before collecting data, the researcher checked the reliability of the tools by pretesting and readjusting the tools based on input from the participants.FindingsThis study established that most universities in Kenya appreciate the fact that plagiarism negatively affects the quality of teaching, learning and research. However, despite the fact that there is goodwill in the effort to combat plagiarism, there were no unified mechanisms, strategies and implementation policies in solving plagiarism issues among universities in Kenya. Different universities have adopted different strategies in terms of policy, software and capacity. Further, it was noted that the well-established/funded universities had clear stipulated mechanisms as opposed to the ill-funded universities with limited funding and budget.Practical implicationsThis research provides an opportunity for universities to make an informed choice about the policies, required capacity and software to tackle plagiarism. The findings from the study will be used to improve the quality of academic writing and standardize procedures on plagiarism by proposing policy actions needed to maximize the benefits of the investments in this venture. This study recommends a collaborations approach among universities in the fight against plagiarism. Because the Kenya Library and Information Services Consortium already supports many university cooperation, they ought to take the initiative in formulating policy, choosing the appropriate software to use and developing the necessary ability in the battle against plagiarism.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first effort to evaluate the anti-plagiarism strategies being applied in different universities in Kenya. This study demonstrates the gaps and variations in university strategies in combating academic plagiarism. The findings can be applied to improve academic communication and indeed the quality of research output at other universities in Kenya and beyond.

Health research-strengthening and capacity development: Research support system model in an academic healthcare system.

Introduction: Healthcare research contributes to the well-being of a population; hence, it is important to use the right system to ensure that junior researchers develop the required skills. Current research-strengthening and capacity development programs might lack a research process-based common framework or model leading to variable and suboptimal outcomes. This study aimed to describe the development and evaluation of a model for health research-capacity development at both individual and institutional levels in a Joint Commission International-accredited governmental healthcare organization in Qatar.Methods: This retrospective observational study evaluated a research support system employed in Qatar for 1 year and constituted of16 stations, each covering a different topic and supported by an experienced faculty member. We recorded how many faculty members were involved and how many people accessed which stations. We developed an outcomes logistic model and obtained feedback about their experience of using the research support system through a short survey.Results: Twenty-one faculty members supported a total of 77 participants, representing various professions and specialties. The majority of the participants received support on multiple stations, and the most solicited were study design and methodology (n = 45, 58.4%) and research idea (n = 29, 37.7%). The most common type of research that participants required support for was clinical research (n = 65, 84.4%). Moreover, 58.4% of the participants answered the survey, and their responses attested to their perceived benefit of making use of the research support system.Conclusion: The research support system presented was positively evaluated by participants and promoted networking. Such aspects are favorable to the development of a research culture within an organization and would be a good addition for implementation in universities running healthcare programs and hospitals with residency programs and a large and varied healthcare workforce. This would contribute to the development of health-related research capacity and quality of research outputs in these institutions.

Evolutionary models of academic spin-offs establishment - comparison of Catalonia and South-Moravian region

ABSTRACT The transfer of knowledge from universities has received tremendous attention in the scientific literature. This paper contributes to the discussion about the differences in spin-off process in universities, taking different perspective for comparative case study. First, we put a focus on differences in stage-based model of spin-off creation in conditions of university allocated in developed region and dynamically developing region of transitional (post-socialistic) economy. Then we observe different approaches towards spin-off emergence support in case of universities with long- and short-knowledge transfer tradition and different volumes and quality of research output. The results allow us to explain different definitions of spin-off and support mechanisms in spin-off process, while we primarily observe supportive tools of university TLOs in various stages of development of spin-offs. The study delivers practical implications for universities and TLOs that are just setting-up or rethinking the own models of spin-off establishment support.

Promoting the Sustainable Improvement of Educational Empirical Research Quality: What Kinds of Collaborative Production Relationships Make Sense?

With the transformation of the knowledge production model, the research system of educational research is becoming more extensive, and academic collaboration has become an important productive method of promoting the sustainable development of educational empirical research. Given this situation, what kinds of relationships will sustainably improve educational empirical research output quality? Taking the influence of educational empirical research article as an example, we selected 4610 empirical research articles in 15 education journals for analysis, published between the years of 2015 and 2020. In the sustainable development progress of educational empirical research, the optimal scale phenomenon has been verified in cooperative research. Identity collaboration, institutional collaboration, international collaboration, and discipline collaboration were all found to have a strongly significant influence on the sustainable improvement of educational empirical research output quality. Meanwhile, the output quality of educational empirical research is affected by the heterogeneity of the number of cooperators and cooperating identities. These findings suggest that the optimal proportion of teacher–student collaboration should be 2–3, and the optimal scale of colleague collaboration should be 3–4. Compared with teacher–student collaboration, colleague collaboration, including cross-organization and interdisciplinary collaboration, was more conductive to enhancing the sustainable improvement of educational empirical research outcome quality. According to these findings, it is reasonable to believe that, in the process of the sustainable development of educational empirical research, fine-guidance-style teacher–student collaboration and small-scale, cross-unit colleague collaboration should be promoted; meanwhile, strengthening the collaboration between normal universities, optimizing the quality of international collaboration, and promoting pedagogy intersection with other disciplines are also critical to promote the sustainable improvement of educational empirical research outcome quality.

Mapping Research on miRNAs in Cancer: A Global Data Analysis and Bibliometric Profiling Analysis

miRNAs biomarkers are emerging as an essential part of clinical oncology. Their oncogenic and tumour suppressor properties playing a role in malignancy has generated interest in their potential for use in disease prognosis. While several studies on miRNA have been carried out across the globe, evaluating the clinical implications of miRNAs in cancer diagnosis and prognosis research has currently not been attempted. A study delineating the area of miRNA research, including the topics presently being focused on, the seminal papers in this field, and the direction of research interest, does not exist. This study aims to conduct a large-scale, global data analysis and bibliometric profiling analysis of studies to evaluate the research output of clinical implications of miRNAs in cancer diagnosis and prognosis listed in the SCOPUS database. A systematic search strategy was followed to identify and extract all relevant studies, subsequently analysed to generate a bibliometric map. SPSS software (version 27) was used to calculate bibliometric indicators or parameters for analysis, such as year and country of affiliation with leading authors, journals, and institutions. It is also used to analyse annual research outputs, including total citations and the number of times it has been cited with productive nations and H-index. The number of global research articles retrieved for miRNA-Cancer research over the study period 2003 to 2019 was 18,636. Between 2012 and 2019, the growth rate of global publications is six times (n = 15,959; 90.71 percent articles) that of 2003 to 2011. (2704; 9.29 per cent articles). China published the most publications in the field of miRNA in cancer (n = 7782; 41%), while the United States had the most citations (n = 327,538; 48%) during the time span. Of these journals, Oncotarget has the highest percentage of article publications. The journal Cancer Research had the most citations (n = 41,876), with 6.20 per cent (n = 41,876). This study revealed a wide variety of journals in which miRNA-Cancer research are published; these bibliometric parameters exhibit crucial clinical information on performance assessment of research productivity and quality of research output. Therefore, this study provides a helpful reference for clinical oncologists, cancer scientists, policy decision-makers and clinical data researchers.

Fostering research integrity in sub-Saharan Africa: challenges, opportunities, and recommendations.

Integrity and adherence to appropriate ethical standards are important elements of research. These standards are key to protecting research participants´ rights as well as ensuring the reliability and quality of research outputs. Although empirical evidence is scanty, several authors have alluded to the fact that violation of research integrity standards could be common in low- and middle-income countries including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Understanding the issues, challenges, and opportunities of research integrity and ethics in SSA is key to promoting the responsible conduct of research and the protection of research participants. This paper presents the authors´ critical views and recommendations on the current state of research integrity in SSA. We argue that understanding the current research integrity architecture in SSA has the potential to identify opportunities to promote responsible conduct of research in SSA. Such opportunities include, but are not limited to transparency, accountability, and reproducibility of research, which collectively lead to enhanced public trust in the research enterprise. We highlight the need to embrace equity, fairness, diversity, and inclusivity in the research cycle from conception (priority setting), funding, implementation, dissemination of findings, and scale up. We move on to provide a rationale for understanding the differences and similarities between research ethics and research integrity. Governments, research, and academic institutions must develop multifaceted approaches to promote compliance with principles of research integrity by developing and implementing clear research integrity policies and guidelines that foster responsible conduct of research and prioritize capacity building and empowerment of early career researchers, students, and other targeted key stakeholders.

Modelling research productivity of university researchers using research incentives to crowd-in motivation

PurposeThe overall aim of this research is to propose a research incentive framework for academic staff members at the South African universities of technology (UoTs).Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory case study methodology was applied, while a questionnaire was used to (1) identify the factors that stimulated staff members' research activities; (2) assess what was considered an appropriate way of measuring research productivity and (3) identify appropriate research awards, recognition and rewards. Working from the self-determination theory (SDT), the results of the data analysis were used to develop a framework for ensuring crowding-in of research incentives into intrinsic motivation. This framework is anchored on the three main components (competence, autonomy and social relatedness) of the cognitive evaluation theory (CET) that provides guidelines for the design of a research incentive system.FindingsIntrinsically motivated researchers tend to conduct research for their inherent satisfaction because it meets their basic individual psychological need for competence. Existing research incentives and productivity systems fail to provide intrinsic motivation for researchers. Recommendation for a framework for designing research incentive systems is centred on the researchers themselves. This approach contributes to a research environment that provides space for autonomy, creativity, flexibility and innovation and consequently a successful research output that is hinged on the ability to keep researchers intrinsically motivated.Originality/valueA conceptual framework is proposed specifically for technically focused UoT suggesting that crowding-in the motivation of researcher incentives results in improved intrinsic-based motivation. The autonomy of researchers in particular is regarded as the most important driver of such motivation, with the availability of resources, collegiality and research skills and development ranking as the most important aspects specifically driving intrinsic motivation. The framework not only provides a tool for institutions of higher education focused on developing the technical skills, but also offers management at any type of university challenged with low research outputs and a poor research ethos with an alternative method to improve both the quantity and quality of research outputs.

Scientometric analysis of mammalian microbiome research

Over the past few decades, microbiota research has been gaining the attention of the researchers working on the concepts of health–enhancement and overall–wellbeing. The mammalian microbiome has been progressively acknowledged as a developing research area resulting in an increased number of publications. This study intends to use scientometric and bibliometric analysis to evaluate the research development and evolution of publication patterns in the field of mammalian microbiome between 2007 and 2020. 512 published articles were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and were analyzed. We assessed the quantity and quality of research output through statistical methods of bibliometric indicators, comprising a number of publications, citations, productive authors, journals and countries, using a bibliometric analysis. Scientometric analysis was performed using main path analysis, bibliometric coupling, co-word co-occurrence and co-author analysis, systematically characterizing and visualizing the trend and delivering a pivotal review of the mammalian microbiome research status quo. The results identified an increase in the number of publications over time showing the rapid research growth, with top productive countries recording the highest number of research outcomes with influential research. The bibliographic coupling revealed the most shared papers that form landmark papers and the co-author analysis indicated the most influential authors in mammalian microbiome research. The evolutionary path of the mammalian microbiome research was traced using the main path analysis identifying the milestone papers. The frequently occurred words were enumerated from co-word, co-occurrence networks. The information from this study could be a transcript for a comprehensive understanding of current mammalian microbiome research and can also direct the future and emerging trends in this research realm.

The role of personal and relative job performance in promotion decisions

AbstractThis study employs personnel data from a large university to examine how supervisors utilize information on employees' job performance in promotion decisions. The study shows that better‐performing employees are rewarded with promotions as a higher output of peer‐reviewed publications and better quality of research output are associated with a higher probability of being promoted. The study also shows that supervisors compare their subordinates' job performance when deciding on promotions: employees who outperform their colleagues in terms of research output and research quality are more likely to be promoted. Subsequently, the study provides evidence to support the key premise of the tournament theory that promotions depend on relative comparisons of employees' performance.

Bibliometric Profile and Density Visualizing Analysis of Yoga Intervention in Type 2 Diabetes: A 44 - Year Study on Global Scientific Research Output from 1975 to 2019.

The aim of the paper is to provide an in-depth evaluation of the research output of yoga intervention on type 2 diabetes mellitus from 1975 to 2019 using large-scale data analysis, bibliometric indicators, and density equalizing mapping. Data related to yoga-diabetic research, as search descriptors were retrieved using the Scopus database. The most common bibliometric indicators were annual research output, total citations, productive countries and leading authors, journals and institutions, and frequently cited articles. The number of global research articles retrieved for yoga-diabetic research over the study period 1975–2019 was 411. The growth rate of global publications in 2015–2019 is four times as high as in 1975–2003. The total number of citations for the retrieved articles was 7189, and the average number of citations per article was 23.82. Of these journals, the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has published the highest number of papers, which accounts for 2.9% of total publications. This study showed a wide variety of journals in which yoga-diabetic articles are published; these bibliometric indicators provide useful information on performance assessment of productivity and quality of research output. Therefore, this study provides a helpful reference for endocrinologists, yoga therapists, policy decision-makers, and diabetes researchers.

A bibliometric overview of the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management: Research contributions and influence

The Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management (JHTM) has been growing from strength to strength, and it is currently widely recognized as one of the top ranked journals in its own field. This study represents a first attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of JHTM publications from 2006 to 2020 in order to identify the research developments and trends that signify the evolution of the journal's research contributions and influence. To achieve that, several bibliographic indicators are used such as, bibliographic coupling analysis, co-authorship analysis and keyword co-occurrence. Overall, in line with the journal's impact factors and rankings, the bibliometric analyses confirm the increasing research contribution and influence of the journal in terms of quantity and quality of research outputs. Thematic analyses findings reveal that the JHTM has continuously published articles focusing on original and contemporary topics including: tourism experiences, service quality, hospitality management skills, work-family conflict, sustainability and responsible tourism. Overall, the findings provide meaningful insights to help the JHTM editorial board and the scholarly community alike to formulate research agendas and inform research strategies that can help them to make a significant and influential contribution to the scientific field.
