A study on heating of residential buildings in the Yangtze River Valley of China

Yangtze River is China's densely populated and the most economically prosperous region. It’s hot and humid in summer and cold in winter in this region. This area is considered as a non-heating region in winter, The residential building design usually does not consider the building heating requirements. The building envelope thermal performance is poor, and the indoor thermal environment quality is worse in the residential building in this region. In recent years, local experts and residents in the area have expressed strong willingness to building heating in winter. Consequently, on the basis of field investigation and field test, this paper has analyzed the choice of building heating mode from the aspects of local meteorological conditions, indoor environment status, local residents' living habits and residents' heating demand. Based on the results of the technological economic comparison of preliminary studies, suggestions on the suitable building heating mode were given in the Yangtze River Valley of China.

Economic growth and improvements in living standards have resulted in an urgent demand for comfortable and healthy building environments, and this has led to a sharp increase in energy consumption in China. Therefore, in order to achieve a good balance between environmental quality of indoor thermal environment and energy consumption, it is crucial to identify the actual residential energy demand and its influencing factors. In this study, the annual energy demand for a typical multi-residential building in China was dynamically simulated, and the influence of building thermal performance and air-conditioning setting temperature was studied for each climate zone in China. The results show that energy saving strategies in China should be implemented accordingly in response to different climate and geographical conditions. In the severe cold and cold climate zones that require greater levels of heating in winter, air tightness of building should be considered a priority, as better air tightness can deliver a significant heating energy reduction, whereas the quality of the wall insulation is the main contributor to the indoor thermal environment in winter for all climate zones. On the other hand, in the south of China, where comfort in summer is the main concern, the improvement of external window performance and the addition of external shading are the key issues that need to be addressed. Compared with the poor effects of lowering heating temperature in the north of China, raising cooling temperature in the south is relatively effective method to save energy without causing a sharp deterioration of the indoor thermal environment. It may be realistic to reduce energy consumption and ensure the quality of indoor thermal environment in multi- residential buildings by using the appropriate climate-responsive energy-efficient measures.

Indoor environmental quality of high occupancy dormitory buildings in winter in Shanghai, China

Maintaining acceptable air quality and providing adequate thermal comfort are conflicting goals for ventilation requirements in crowded, unheated rooms in winter. The former requires a maximal ventilation rate for indoor pollutant removal, but the latter prefers a minimal rate. To understand the indoor thermal environment in winter in the climatic zone that features hot summer and cold winter, the indoor environmental quality in three selected rooms of university dormitory buildings with high occupancy density in Shanghai, China was monitored simultaneously and continuously from December 2010 to January 2011. The results show that, without space heating equipment in winter, the quality of indoor thermal environment in the student dormitory was poor, and that the indoor temperature ranges of the sampling rooms were completely out of the thermal comfort zone as defined by ASHRAE. To maintain an endurable thermal environment, the occupants had to close the windows to reduce the heat loss, which resulted in elevated indoor CO2 concentrations during sleeping hours due to a lack of ventilation. The indoor CO2 levels exceeding 2000 ppm (4000 mg/m3) were observed in several occasions. To improve the indoor air environment, central heating systems or individual heating units should be provided for dormitory buildings in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Strategy for Application of Non-Wood Fibrous Material on Roofs at Rurual Areas in Cold Region

Large energy consumption, serious pollution and poor quality of indoor thermal environment are generally seen during construction in villages and towns in China nowadays, leading to poor building insulation performance. Envolope of enclosure of a buidling is key to its insulation performance. Material selection of building enclosures and green design of construction technology are the key to promoting insulation performance of the building as villages and towns in cold region are subject to special geographical position, climate conditions and economic factors. With a focus on research of traditional non-wood fibrous material modification with existing technology and the engineering practice in non-wood fibre roof in villages and towns of cold region, this paper came up with the prospects of its applicatin in the following design strategies including “ecological and conservation-oriented roofing with modified local materials, new hybrid roofing with simplified construction technology and paper tensioning roofing with innovative synthetic materials”.

Study on the Ventilation and Dehumidification System Integration Framework for City Buildings in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Zone

Building ventilation has typical regional characteristics, due to its annual high wet climate characteristics in hot summer and cold winter area, the choice of ventilation type is especially important. The present building energy consumption simulation and thermal comfort evaluation of is inadequate to air humidity effects, and easily to ignore ventilation energy saving potential with building thermal environment control. In this paper based on the region annual building humidity environment characteristic, author put forward a kind of building ventilation and dehumidification integrated solutions, from a methodological point of view to explore a ventilation and dehumidification integrated technique with air conditioning and heating period , try to deal with the indoor thermal environment quality problems with lower energy consumption.

CASE STUDY ON INDOOR THERMAL ENVIRONMENT DURING WINTER AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF APARTMENT HOUSES IN COLD CLIMATIC REGION

In cold climatic region, more and more detached houses were getting to be thermally well insulated and less infiltration. On the other hand, quality of indoor thermal environment in apartment houses which would have lower thermal insulation and infiltration than in detached houses is likely to be not good. Measurements were carried out to evaluate indoor thermal environment during winter and energy consumption of eight apartment houses located in Akita Prefecture.
