Risk related to heavy equipment productivity on the road construction project in Palu city

Heavy equipment is a vital resource in road construction projects. To determine the level of efficiency and effectiveness of heavy equipment, a quantity is needed which is expressed by the productivity of the tool. There are several risks related to machine productivity that can affect time, cost, and quality. The purpose of the study was to identify, assess, and manage risks related to heavy equipment productivity and to determine the effect of these risks on cost, time, and quality in road construction projects in Palu City. The method used is primary data collection through interviews and questionnaires as research instruments. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and assessment of risk acceptability. The results showed that 21 risks were included in the undesirable risk category with a percentage of 88%, so the action taken for these risks was to reduce risk to an acceptable level by making improvements within a certain period and 3 risks that are included in the acceptable risk category with a percentage of 12%, then the actions taken for these risks are to make improvements whenever possible because these risks do not have a large impact and are still within acceptable limits. Of the 24 risks, there is 1 risk that has a significant impact on time with a percentage of 100%, 4 risks that have a significant impact on costs with a percentage of 100%, and 1 risk that has a significant impact on quality with a percentage of 79 %.

Unveiling Construction Quality Factors: Insights from Asian Economy's Building Projects

Economic growth of any country depends on the construction projects and industry in the region. Therefore, the construction industry in Pakistan is directly related to quality and continual improvements in construction projects. Quality is a sensitive and high-priority issue in global construction including in Pakistan. The prime objective of this research study was to investigate major factors influencing the quality of building construction projects in Pakistan. The intended of this research study was to provide guidelines and information to all stakeholders such as owners, project consultants, and project contractors during the construction site of projects so that they are completed on time and with quality. The descriptive survey method was utilized with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative approach was used to collect data through project documents and in-depth interviews. N-Vivo software were used at the preliminary stage for the analysis of qualitative data to identify these factors and the linked sub-factors. Analysis of this qualitative data identified 32 factors that influence building construction projects. Questionnaire design was based on qualitative data analysis. The quantitative approach was used to collect data from building construction projects in Pakistan through via questionnaires. The 150 questionnaires links were sent to Pakistan building construction companies in Google form, and 120 respondents filled out the questionnaire. In this way, the response rate is 80%, enough to get accurate results. The SPSS software was used for analysis of collective data. The important quality factors were resulted from a stepwise RFI, RSI, IRII on the quality factors resulted from the factor analysis approach. The correlation coefficient was used to find the relationship between consultants and contractors with the owner. On the basis of analysis, it is concluded that the most significant factors influencing the quality of a building construction project were identified. the Findings of this study were: the skill and interest of labor during construction are a significant impact on the quality in Pakistan, escalation of material prices had influenced the quality of construction projects, making decisions based on price rather than the value of work, Lack of implementation of quality standards of work has greatly influenced the quality of construction industry projects, lack of comprehensive and accurate bill of quantities (BOQ), excessive design changes during construction and shortage of resource materials. In Pakistan, all the stakeholders should consider and take action for these influencing quality factors before starting construction projects.

Damage and reliability analysis of double-arch tunnel without a middle pilot tunnel under blast load

In this study, a new type of multi-arch tunnel construction method is proposed. This effort is undertaken due to the many disadvantages of the traditional multi-arch tunnel construction method. Furthermore, this method omits the construction of a middle pilot tunnel, and it has the advantages of safety, high efficiency, and being economical. When using the method of continuous arch tunneling without a middle pilot tunnel, the blasting of the first tunnel and the following tunnel has a greater impact on the surrounding rock damage, as well as on the supporting structure of the same cross-section. Therefore, this study uses LS-DYNA finite element software to construct a three-dimensional numerical model. In addition, the perimeter rock damage law and mechanical response characteristics of the supporting structure in the same cross-section of the first tunnel, as well as the following tunnel after blasting without a middle pilot tunnel, are analyzed. At the same time, the results of the study are based on optimizing the blasting program, and these are then applied to the field. Through the results, it is found that, after blasting a continuous arch tunnel without a medial pilot tunnel, the surrounding rock damage in the arch cross-region of the double-arch tunnel (where the arch top and the arch shoulder are more significant) and the effective stress of the supporting structure exceed the strength design value. In addition, the maximum adequate pressure is distributed in the medial diaphragm wall. With the optimized blasting scheme, the range of the peripheral rock damage is reduced by a maximum of 67%, and the effective stress in the supporting structure is reduced by 25.9–64.8%. The research results are of great significance in terms of improving construction safety, economic efficiency, and project quality, as well as in promoting the research and development of new work methods for double-arch tunnels.

Exploring blockchain technology acceptance among non-managerial construction practitioners in Shenzhen, China

PurposeProblems such as information asymmetry and a lack of trust among construction practitioners damage the quality and progress of construction projects. The decentralization, transparency, traceability and temper-proof nature of blockchain technology (BCT) can provide solutions and facilitate multiparty cooperation. However, BCT acceptance in the construction industry is relatively low, and there are few pilot projects adopting BCT. Most relevant literature focuses on BCT acceptance at the industry and organizational levels, but the impact of non-managerial practitioners executing BCT or the traditional approach in day-to-day work tends to be disregarded. This study aims to establish a theoretical model of BCT acceptance, identify key influencing factors and paths of behavioral intention to adopt BCT and promote strategies to enhance BCT adoption.Design/methodology/approachA new BCT acceptance model for construction practitioners was proposed. A survey was performed with 203 construction practitioners in Shenzhen, China and post-survey interviews were conducted with four BCT experts for validation. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used to examine the influence paths and moderating effect analysis was performed to check practitioners’ differential perceptions.FindingsPerformance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions and perceived behavioral control significantly and positively influence behavioral intention to accept BCT, while impacts from effort performance and risk are negative. Overcoming obstacles related to the effort required for BCT adoption and effective risk management will be essential to unlocking BCT’s transformative potential. Then, the moderating effects of respondents’ gender, degree and BCT knowledge as well as the project type involved were analyzed. Continued adoption of BCT in the construction industry has the potential to revolutionize project management, transparency and trust among stakeholders.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research can help practitioners and government agencies understand crucial influencing factors and pathways of BCT acceptance. Targeted measures, such as increasing practitioners’ benefits and sense of BCT usefulness, conducting pilot projects and increasing publicity, were proposed for project leadership teams to enhance BCT adoption. This may lead to increased efficiency, reduced disputes and more streamlined and secure construction processes, ultimately enhancing the industry’s overall performance.Originality/valueFew studies have explored BCT acceptance from the perspective of non-managerial construction practitioners. The BCT acceptance model proposed in this study is a novel adaptation of previous technology acceptance models, with new factors (risk and perceived behavioral control) and moderating variables (degree, BCT knowledge and project type) added for better understanding of non-managerial practitioners’ perceptions and differences.

A Review of Concrete Carbonation Depth Evaluation Models

Carbonation is one of the critical issues affecting the durability of reinforced concrete. Evaluating the depth of concrete carbonation is of great significance for ensuring the quality and safety of construction projects. In recent years, various prediction algorithms have been developed for evaluating concrete carbonation depth. This article provides a detailed overview of the existing prediction models for concrete carbonation depth. According to the data processing methods used in the model, the existing prediction models can be divided into mathematical curve models and machine learning models. The machine learning models can be further divided into the following categories: artificial neural network model, decision tree model, support vector machine model, and combined models. The basic idea of the mathematical curve model is to directly establish the relationship between the carbonation depth and age of concrete by using certain function curves. The advantage of the mathematical curve model is that only a small amount of experimental data is needed for curve fitting, which is very convenient for engineering applications. The limitation of the curve model is that it can only consider the influence of some factors on the carbonation depth of concrete, and the prediction accuracy cannot be guaranteed. The advantage of using the machine learning model to predict the carbonation depth of concrete is that many factors can be considered at the same time. When there are sufficient experimental data, the trained machine learning model can give more accurate prediction results than the mathematical curve model. The main defect of the machine learning model is that it needs a lot of experimental data as training samples, so it is not as convenient as the mathematical curve model in engineering applications. A future research direction may be to combine a machine learning model with a mathematical curve model to evaluate the carbonation depth of concrete more accurately.

CONSTRUCTION ANTICORRUPTION MEASURES: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Corruption poses a significant ethical challenge within the construction sector, which is often characterized as one of the most susceptible industries to corrupt practices. Corruption has a substantial negative impact on the quality and effectiveness of construction projects. In an effort to address this issue, the authors conducted a comprehensive literature review to identify effective strategies for reducing corruption in the construction industry. Employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) framework, the researchers meticulously assessed 19 relevant peer-reviewed articles. The review yielded a set of six key measures that can be employed to mitigate corruption within construction workplaces. These measures encompass regulatory, administrative, compliance, promotional, investigative, and disciplinary strategies. Accordingly, the study provides a thorough explanation of these identified measures, offering valuable insights for construction practitioners and policymakers alike in their battle against corruption. Consequently, this research makes a substantial contribution to the field of construction engineering and management.

A Review - Factors Affecting on Time, Cost and Quality of Construction

Abstract: The primary goal of this study is to assess and explore time, cost, and quality management within the construction industry. The purpose of the study is to identify factors that impact time, cost, and quality management in construction projects. Quality stands out as a crucial aspect of all projects, and the success of construction projects hinges significantly on the performance of quality. However, accomplishing this objective is undeniably a challenging task. This study specifically investigates the factors that influence the control of cost and time in construction projects. The aim is to propose recommendations that can assist stakeholders in achieving enhanced cost and time performance in construction projects. The study acknowledges the intricate nature of balancing these key elements and strives to contribute valuable insights for improving overall project outcomes in the construction industry. This study is limited to the perspective of an appropriate sample of professionals in the construction industry. The data collection method involves the use of questionnaires and interviews, which will be subject to descriptive statistical analysis utilizing percentages, mean scores, and frequency of collected data. The primary factors influencing time, cost, and quality in a construction project were identified as planned and scheduled deficiencies, fraudulent methods, kickbacks, and the absence of clear evaluation standards. The research aims to scrutinize the factors that have both positive and adverse effects on construction projects. The study recommends that the construction team work diligently to ensure effective management of time, cost, and quality in construction projects. The objective of this study is to analyze how those involved in project teams perceive time, cost, and quality management on construction projects. Conclusions are drawn, and recommendations are made regarding time, cost, and quality management estimates for construction projects. In the construction industry, the concept of risk management is a less popular technique. There are three main stages in the systematic approach to risk management in the construction industry. A questionnaire, developed based on identified factors, was used to gather the opinions of construction experts. Quality is a critical aspect of any project, especially in construction. The success of construction projects is largely determined by the quality of work. Unfortunately, the construction industry is facing quality issues that result in ineffective and inefficient projects, leading to cost overruns, delays, and excessive rework. To address this issue, a research study was conducted to examine the factors that have positive and negative impacts on construction projects. A questionnaire was developed to gather feedback from construction experts, and statistical analysis tools such as chisquare and weighted mean method (WMM) were used to rank the significance of these factors. The definition of quality can vary depending on the perspective of those defining it. Some see it as meeting specific requirements, while others view it as delivering value for the price paid. For construction companies, quality is about satisfying customers and fulfilling their needs while staying within budget. Quality is an important factor in construction projects, as it can lead to cost overruns and delays. Quality control (QC) and quality assurance systems are established to meet specific requirements. In the construction industry, QC can be seen as achieving client satisfaction, managing costs, and allowing enough time to achieve the desired level of quality. An international standard organization (ISO) has developed a quality assurance system to improve quality and address quality-related issues. The ISO 9001 series has been created to apply to all types of organizations.

An Examination of Site Meetings: Essential Factors and Implications on Building Quality in Construction Projects within Higher Institutions in Ekiti State

The building and construction industry (BCI) is made of diverse professionals and despite its emphasis on quality project delivery, the essentials of site meetings have not been adequately explored. The study examined the fundamental aspects of Site Meetings and their impact on the execution of construction projects in the building sector, specifically focusing on higher education institutions in Ekiti State, Nigeria. An online survey questionnaire was used and administered to the Consultants and Contractors, within Higher Institutions in Ekiti State, and only seventy-four (74) Respondents filled out the questionnaire and submitted it. The results indicated that 67.6% and 31.1% strongly agreed and agreed respectively that site minutes are important to project implementation. 50% each strongly agreed and agreed that the agenda is a critical tool for project implementation. 37.7% of respondent do not have a definite time for sending notice of a meeting while 10.8% do not have an agenda for their site meetings, also, 52.7% make the minutes of site meetings available before the meeting and 47.3% during the meeting. The study recommended that all stakeholders should take the essentials seriously. Notice of meetings, agendas, and Minutes should be prepared and sent ahead of site meeting dates.

Investigating the use of Drone Technology for Effective Project Management

This study investigates the pivotal role of drones in enhancing project management within the construction industry, focusing on their applications and impact. The study addresses the prevalent productivity and efficiency challenges in the construction sector. Key areas of inquiry encompass the utilization of drones for aerial surveys, real-time data collection, and safety enhancement in construction projects. The study aspires to furnish comprehensive insights into the benefits, challenges, and best practices associated with the integration of drone technology. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the study combines a thorough ten-year retrospective analysis from 2013 to 2023 with quantitative data collected through surveys distributed to construction companies and professionals involved in project management. Additionally, qualitative data is obtained through interviews with key stakeholders to explore factors influencing the use of drones for effective project management in construction. The findings of this study show drone technology improves site surveying and mapping, enhances progress monitoring and documentation, quality control and defect detection, enables safety monitoring and risk management but it also faces adoption challenges. The conclusion underscores the potential of drones to enhance cost efficiency, time savings, quality, and safety in construction projects. Recommendations advocate for strategic investments in drone technology by construction companies, the establishment of standardized procedures and protocols for its use, provision of comprehensive training programs, development of project management professionals' skills, and collaborative efforts with stakeholders. These recommendations collectively contribute to the optimized incorporation of drones into project management practices within the construction sector.

Theoretical and Empirical Research on Improving the Quality of Higher Vocational College Enterprise Cooperation Based on PDCA Cycle

The quality of school enterprise cooperation in vocational colleges is one of the important indicators for the quality of teaching practice in vocational colleges. Applying project management methods, technologies, and tools to school enterprise cooperation construction projects has significant advantages, which helps to ensure the quality of school enterprise cooperation construction projects under the “Double High Plan”. In this context, this article takes the construction project of the School of Finance and Economics Cooperation of Chengdu Vocational and Technical College as the research object, applies the PDCA cycle improvement theory of project quality management to the school enterprise cooperation of the School of Finance and Economics, analyzes the problems in the construction of the school enterprise cooperation project of the School of Finance and Economics, and proposes improvement suggestions, in order to explore an effective path for higher vocational colleges in finance and economics to promote the quality improvement of school enterprise cooperation projects.

Conceptual model of pre-project marketing research and its impact on the quality of investment and construction project

Научная статья посвящена вопросам проведения предпроектных маркетинговых исследований и их влиянию на качество инвестиционно-строительного проекта (ИСП) и качество готовой строительной продукции. В современных условиях кризисных явлений экономики и повышенной конкуренции товаров и услуг маркетинг играет особую роль во всех сферах деятельности, в том числе и строительной отрасли. Авторами отмечается, что не все организации в своей практической деятельности уделяют должное внимание предпроектным маркетинговым исследованиям. Для развития уже используемых на практике маркетинговыми подразделениями методик предпроектных исследований и формирования новых уникальных подходов у организаций авторами была разработана концептуальная модель предпроектных маркетинговых исследований. Авторская концептуальная модель направлена на повышение результативности предпроектных маркетинговых иссле­дований — получение информации, отвечающей установленным требованиям. В статье представлены данные требования, в частности, наиболее подробно рассмотрено требование к полноте информации, обозначены негативные последствия информационной недостаточности и излишка для проекта и его участников, предложены методы обеспечения полноты информации. Уделяется внимание высокой ценности маркетинговой информации, полученной на предпроектном этапе проекта, для принятия решений на последующих стадиях ИСП и выстраивания маркетинговой стратегии в рамках проектной деятельности организации. На основании анализа авторами приводится логическое обоснование оказания положительного влияния предпроектных маркетинговых исследований на качество отдельных процессов и мероприятий в рамках жизненного цикла ИСП и, в конечном счете, на потребительское и производственное качество готовой строительной продукции.

Evaluating the quality of construction projects in Egypt and identifying the factors that influence deviation

ABSTRACT The research aims to assess the quality of construction and construction projects in Egypt (Damanhour City) to monitor and follow up on the reality of the implementation of engineering projects and determine their percentage compared to the methods and international standards adopted for that and then identify the reasons and factors affecting the quality of project implementation. To achieve this, we evaluated the quality and identified the problems related to it in a sample of construction projects implemented in the year 2021, and this was done by measuring the percentage of conformity to quality requirements using checklists according to the standards of the quality management program BIM 360 field, and the conformity rate was 88% and indicates the existence of a real problem according to international standards, so problems and deviations related to quality were identified and the reasons leading to the occurrence of these problems were identified, which were classified into three factors, namely laws, regulations and compliance It has technical factors and administrative factors, which constitute the basis that must be based on it and try to improve the quality of projects, and summarized the research to the need to work by the concerned authorities to reformulate laws related to engineering work and develop them with the identification of systems and procedures to improve technical and administrative factors in engineering projects.

Through a comprehensive analysis of the current research status and practical experience, it explores the application and suitable scenarios of different structural systems in seismic design. The goal of this paper is to provide guidance for architects, engineers, and researchers and promote the development of structural system selection and seismic design for modern residential buildings in China. Conclusions are drawn and future research and practice are discussed through comparison and analysis. This article will discuss the selection of structural systems in building construction, ensuring the quality of construction projects, and guaranteeing the stability and safety of the structures.

The lean journey of the finnish real estate.

Nothing teaches us more than our experiences. That was the main reason why the Finnish construction industry has not only studied Lean and IPD but also launched several pilot projects by public owners to learn, adapt Lean principles in practice, and develop an IPD model suitable for the Finnish construction industry. 
 The IPD model demands teamwork and adapting Lean and IPD industrywide is also teamwork. In Finland, several owners and service providers have been working together since 2010 sharing their learnings in workshops, seminars, and conferences. 
 Over 100 IPD projects have also been a platform for several academic papers. The Finnish Universities have published tens of master’s and doctoral theses during the past 10 years on Lean construction, IPD, and alliance models. 
 The Finnish construction industry has gained major benefits and made important progress on its Lean journey. Lean philosophy and tools have delivered tangible cost savings in projects and services and improved cost estimates, schedule adherence, quality, integration, and collaboration in construction projects. 
 Finland has succeeded in creating smooth and practical discussion and development forums that have shaped the whole industry. The key drivers contributing to this progress are collaboration and integration, confidence-building between the partners as well a deeper understanding and application of the Lean principles in construction. As a result, Lean and integrated project execution are already reflected in the strategies adopted by many companies and client organizations.

The Importance of Construction Project Archives Management and Ways to Strengthen it

China’s economy has been developing rapidly in recent years, leading to an acceleration of urbanization, which in turn caused the number of construction projects in various regions to increase significantly. Archives are important information for construction projects. The quality of archives management can have a great impact on the quality and economic benefits of construction projects. For this reason, it is necessary to increase the emphasis on archives management of construction projects and take effective management measures. This article introduces the concept of construction project archives, highlights the significance of effective management in construction project archives, and examines prevalent issues along with practical measures to enhance construction project archives management, with the goal of offering valuable insights for archive managers.

Research on steel structure system of assembled building and its mechanical performance analysis

Abstract In this paper, the steel structure system of the assembled building is studied, the box modular building stiffness matrix reduction is proposed, and the calculation method of nodal stiffness matrix reduction is proposed based on the concept of nodal degrees of freedom coalescence and substructure to make full use of the repeatability of the box unit to reduce the order of the matrix equilibrium equation. Then, an engineering profile and a comparison of the calculation results of reaction spectrum analysis are carried out for the assembled steel structure system, and studies on the distribution of overturning moments between the frame and core and the distribution of shear forces between the core and the frame are carried out. Lastly, the assembled steel structure system is examined for damage analysis. The results show that the total overturning moment between the box-type modular structure and the conventional structure differs by 5979.6 kN·m and 2.67% in the X-direction and by 4694 kN·m and 2.18% in the Y-direction. The quality and safety of construction projects can be guaranteed more reliably with the help of this study.

Characteristics of shallow buried karst and its safety distance to tunnel in wuxi city, China

Subway tunneling construction in shallow buried karst region is a common challenge. Survey boreholes and cross-hole seismic CT data showed that 29 karst caves exist at elevation of −17 m to −37 m in Si–He section of the Wuxi Metro Line 4, which are consisted of 18 filled caves and 11 empty caves and constitute substantial dangers to the stability and quality of metro construction projects. Based on their size, position, and type of filling, we divided these shallow karst caves into four types. Aimed at exploring the instability of the tunnel after excavation, numerical analyses have been developed by using the Finite difference method. Both the effects of the distance between tunnel and karst caves and the effects of the filling of the cavities on the overall stability of the rock mass around the tunnel have been investigated. According to the design criteria, safety distance between tunnel and karst caves was determined. The monitoring data of tunnel during excavation proved the rationality and accuracy of the analysis results. The research results can provide technical reference for the design and construction of other proposed tunnels that are located in the regions of shallow buried karst in Jiangsu Province.

Research on a Model for an Empirical Analysis of Inherent Defect Insurance Based on Ruin Theory

The system of inherent defect insurance is an important measure to serve the real economy through financial means and improve the quality of construction projects, which is the future development direction of China’s construction industry. However, the related research is not perfect due to the short implementation of the insurance. This could bring risks to the promotion of insurance for companies. Insurance ruin theory is an important method in risk management theory, so adopting it to manage the risk inherent defect insurance from the perspective of insurance companies is vital. The research starts with the classic insurance ruin theory and determines the coefficient of premium collection from the perspective of claim settlement distribution expectations. Furthermore, the approximate distribution of claim settlement is deduced, and a comprehensive risk assessment model is constructed. Finally, based on the data of insurance actuarial practice in Shanghai, both the ruin probability of inherent defect insurance in each insuring term and its average required initial reserve are calculated, which provides the analyses on the risks and main subitems of inherent defect insurance as well as relevant suggestions. Finally, the sensitivity analysis is used to further analyse the risk of different insurance stages of IDI, and the relevant measures are proposed. The research can provide theoretical assistances for insurance companies to carry out effective risk management and provide model tools to make scientific decisions.
