Relationship between the Size of Accounting Firm and the Quality of Carbon Accounting Information Disclosure——The Case of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies in heavy pollution industry in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

The quality of carbon accounting disclosure has attracted much attention as carbon neutrality and carbon peaking targets were mentioned in the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly in 2020. As the world's largest country of Carbon Emission, China lacks research related to the size of accounting firms and the quality of carbon accounting disclosure. This paper establishes an evaluation system of carbon accounting information disclosure quality from the perspective of accounting information quality characteristics, selects Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei regions in 2021 as the research sample, and compares carbon accounting information disclosure quality of listed companies audited by accounting firms of varying sizes from each characteristic dimension of accounting information quality characteristics, and lastly a comprehensive comparison and one-way ANOVA were conducted to explore the relationship between the size of accounting firms and the quality of carbon accounting information disclosure of listed companies in the heavy pollution industry as a whole. The research results indicate that the reliability, timeliness, understandability, and integrity of carbon accounting information of listed companies audited by larger accounting firms are better, but comparability and relevance are not significantly related to accounting firm size; overall, the larger accounting firms correspond to higher quality of carbon accounting information disclosure of listed companies in heavy pollution industries. Based on the research results, this paper puts forward relevant suggestions at three levels: accounting firms, the state, and enterprises, to improve the quality of carbon accounting information disclosure of listed companies, and then to promote the carbon emission reduction work of enterprises, thereby facilitating the achievement of "dual carbon" objectives.

The impact of ownership structure and environmental supervision on the environmental accounting information disclosure quality of high-polluting enterprises in China.

It is still controversial whether environmental supervision, as a compulsory means of environmental protection, can improve the environmental accounting information disclosure quality (EAIDQ). There is a growing debate on if different ownership structures will lead to differences in the environmental accounting information disclosed by enterprises? Thus, through constructing multiple linear regression analysis, we empirically studied the impact of ownership structure and environment supervision on the EAIDQ from both internal and external aspects. The findings presented that (1) the overall EAIDQ is not significantly affected by ownership concentration, check-and-balance of ownership, and environmental supervision. (2) The monetary environmental accounting information disclosure quality (M-EAIDQ) is lower than the non-monetary environmental accounting information disclosure quality (NM-EAIDQ). The M-EAIDQ of state-owned enterprises is higher than that of non-state-owned enterprises. The correlation between environmental supervision and the M-EAIDQ is significantly negative, and a significant positive correlation between environmental supervision and the NM-EAIDQ. The research results of this paper can supplement the existing literature and provide a basis for the government to establish environmental accounting information disclosure standards.

Corporate Governance, Internal Control and the Quality of Accounting Information Disclosure

Internal control, corporate governance and accounting information disclosure quality are hot topics for scholars. This paper studies the relationship among the three based on the data of Shenzhen A-share main board listed companies from 2014 to 2016. The results show that effective internal controls can make companies disclose accounting information with higher quality. And when internal control is effective, the impact of corporate governance will change from insignificant to significant. Finally, this paper summarizes the research and puts forward some relevant suggestions.

Influence of CEO Characteristics on Accounting Information Disclosure Quality—Based on the Mediating Effect of Capital Structure

ABSTRACTTaking the A-share listed companies of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2012–2017 as a sample and capital structure as a moderator variable, this paper uses a mediating effect model to investigate the mechanism of influence of CEO characteristics on accounting information disclosure quality (IDQ). According to our findings, female CEOs and CEO’s educational level negatively influence IDQ, while CEO’s wage level and the separation between CEO and chairman positively influence IDQ. CEO’s educational level positively influences the capital structure; CEO’s wage level and the separation between CEO and chairman negatively influence the capital structure, while female CEOs have a non-significant influence on it. Further investigation reveals that, in the mechanism of influence of female CEOs on IDQ, and the influence of CEO’s educational level on IDQ, capital structure exerts no mediating effect; and that, in the mechanisms of influence of CEO’s wage level, and the separation between CEO and chairman on IDQ, capital structure exerts a partial mediating effect. On this basis, this paper offers methodological inspiration and theoretical support to perfect the governance of Chinese listed companies and regulate their market behaviors.

Disclosure of Non-Current Tangible Assets Information in Local Government Financial Statements: The Case of Lithuania

The aim of the research is to examine and evaluate the accounting information disclosure quality of the non-current tangible assets in the financial statements of the municipalities of Lithuania and identify municipality characteristics having an impact on the accounting information disclosure quality. Although the question of Lithuania public sector accounting information disclosure quality has been relevant since the Public Sector Accounting and Financial Reporting Reform in 2010, this research is the first of its kind in Lithuania. Based on the legal and regulatory requirements and related scientific literature, the research model of the accounting information disclosure quality in the financial statements has been created. Using the content analysis of consolidated annual financial statements of Lithuanian municipalities (years 2013–2016), the disclosure quality index has been calculated, as well as the accounting information disclosure quality of the tangible assets has been evaluated and compared. The results show that the quality of accounting information disclosure of Lithuanian municipalities in 2013 was low (revealed 37.87% of the mandatory information), while in subsequent years, the disclosure of mandatory information increased (to 45.50% in 2016) and the quality of information disclosure became average. Multiple panel regression analysis revealed that specific factors such as size of the municipality, municipality debt-paying capacity, municipality tangible assets, and municipality revenue, have a statistically significant impact on the accounting information disclosure quality.

Corporate Governance Structure and Accounting Information Disclosure Quality: Evidence from Shenzhen Stock Exchange in China

This study investigates the effect of corporate governance structure on the quality of accounting information disclosure using Shenzhen stock exchange data. Existing literatures reported that corporate governance can help to improve accounting quality. However, China's corporate governance structure may have different consequences from prior studies because it has less maturity than developed countries in Europe and the United States. China government, in particular, has a very strong influence on the companies in China and we needs to be verified if the corporate governance structure works properly. From the empirical tests, we find that the proportion of stateowned shares, the proportion of tradable shares, ownership concentration, the size of the board of directors, the proportion of ownership of the board of directors, and size of the board of supervisors are positively associated with the quality of accounting information disclosure. This study will contribute to academics and practitioners by documenting the factors of corporate governance structure on accounting disclosure quality in China.

Evaluating the Quality of Enterprise Environmental Accounting Information Disclosure

To grasp the overall disclosure of the quality of enterprise environmental accounting information and find the weakness of disclosure for precise improvements, an approach for the evaluation for the quality of enterprise environmental accounting information disclosure was proposed. First, the evaluation index system of enterprise environmental accounting information disclosure quality was constructed from three aspects: relevance, reliability, and compliance. Relevance measured whether the relevant information was disclosed comprehensively; reliability checked whether the disclosed information was in accordance with the reality; and compliance assessed whether the disclosed information complied with the laws and regulations. Considering that the ratings derived from multiple appraisers with respect to the evaluation index were in linguistic forms, the aggregation method based on triangular fuzzy numbers was constructed. The consistency of ratings was used to calculate the weight of appraisers for the deduction of personal bias and a case study verified the feasibility and practicality of the proposed approach. The approach not only was applied to the assessment of the company, but also provided some suggestions based on the evaluation results.

Study on Evaluation of Carbon Accounting Information Quality in Coal-fired Power Generation Enterprises

In this paper, by selecting the 2016 annual report or social responsibility report of China's five major coal-fired power generation groups and using content analysis method to make an empirical analysis of the carbon accounting information quality, we found that the carbon accounting information disclosure quality of the five major power generation groups is at medium level. The indicators with higher scores include Pollution Emission, Low-Carbon Awareness and Green Funding. The indicators with lower scores include Carbon Emission Investment, Carbon Emission Transaction. Then, we put forward a series of countermeasures to solve the problems of carbon accounting, including improving carbon accounting research system and guidelines, raising awareness of environmental protection, strengthening social supervision, increasing government carbon emissions monitoring, and implementing a carbon accounting auditing system.

Ownership governance, institutional pressures and circular economy accounting information disclosure

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the determinants of circular economy accounting information disclosure quality, and also to make empirical analysis on the relationship between circular economy accounting information disclosure quality and corporate ownership governance and institutional pressures according to institutional theory and corporate governance theory. Finally, this paper provides some corresponding suggestions for heightening circular economy accounting information disclosure quality. Design/methodology/approach – This paper constructs enterprise circular economy accounting information disclosure model with Chinese characteristics. First, it takes disclosure index method to measure enterprise circular economy accounting information disclosure quality, followed by the hypotheses of this study. Then, this study employs a statistical analysis technique to empirically study the relationship between enterprise circular economy accounting information disclosure quality and ownership governance and institutional pressures, to study the ways to heighten enterprise circular economy accounting information disclosure quality in Chinese background. Findings – Ownership governance and institutional pressures mainly determine quality of circular economy accounting information disclosure. This paper draws the following conclusions: Chinese listed companies have heightened their circular economy accounting information disclosure quality due to ownership concentration, shareholding of institutional investors, mandatory disclosure, capital structure and assets size. However, the circular economy accounting information disclosure quality has low correlation with the profitability and the location of listed companies. Originality/value – Both in China and the West, few scholars or experts adopt empirical research to study the determinants of circular economy accounting information disclosure quality in an institutional theory and corporate governance theory perspective based on China’s supervisory system background. This paper makes a thorough analysis of the factors that affect listed companies’ circular economy accounting information disclosure quality, and provides some corresponding suggestions relevant for heightening circular economy accounting information disclosure quality.
