An Efficient Quality Inspection of Food Products Using Neural Network Classification

Abstract Currently, there is a necessity for the expansion of precise, rapid, and intentional quality assurance with respect to the character of food and horticultural food items, because it is difficult to maintain and organize food products in an elevated quality and secure manner for the increasing population. In this article, we propose a procedure to resolve difficulties and to categorize food as either a broken or quality product. Therefore, the proposed process encompasses four segments, such as preprocessing, segmentation of broken division, feature extraction, and classification. At the first stage, the preprocessing method is used to remove all unnecessary noises. After that, modified region expansion-related segmentation is undertaken to segment the broken division of the food product. Then, feature extraction is used to remove the distinctive attributes of each food product to categorize their evaluation. Finally, the neural network classification procedure is used to examine the food quality. The proposed method is executed in the operational platform of MATLAB, and the consequences are examined by using obtainable methods.

Visualizing distribution of pesticide residues in mulberry leaves using NIR hyperspectral imaging

AbstractNowadays, hyperspectral imaging technique has been abroad and successfully used for quality inspection of food products. In this study, the microstructural changes of mulberry were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Furthermore, NIR hyperspectral imaging system was used to predict the distribution of Pesticide residues in mulberry leaves with the aid of Gas Chromatography. It is primary to extract the characteristic wavelengths in the prediction and visualization of Pesticide residues in mulberry leaves. Successive projections algorithm (SPA), Stepwise regression(SR) and Regression coefficients (RC) were utilized. MLR was applied to build prediction models based on spectral feature in characteristic wavelengths. The best model SPA‐MLR ( and RMSEP = 38.789) was implemented into the pesticide residues visualization procedure. This study demonstrated that pesticide residues distribution map clearly showed the distribution of Pesticide residues in mulberry leaves.Practical applicationsWell understanding the effect of Pesticide residues to biological structure is very important for revelation of novel biological function and mechanism of action of the protein. To facilitate more quickly and effectively detect the types of pesticide residues on the surface of mulberry leaves, the microstructural changes of mulberry were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). China's dairy crisis: impacts, causes and policy implications for a sustainable dairy industry

The dairy industry is an important part of the global economy, and the rapidly developing dairy enterprises in China have become increasingly important to the rest of the world. Due to increasing demand for dairy products and support from the government, China's dairy industry has thrived in recent decades. But rapid growth has been accompanied by a suite of industry/structural problems associated with raw milk supply, processing enterprises, product retailing and profit allocation. Thus, a major dairy crisis took place in 2008, triggered by a notorious melamine-contaminated milk event. The dairy crisis has had devastating impacts on China's dairy industry, negatively affecting farmers, consumers, processing enterprises and even government agencies. The Chinese government has developed rigorous measures to prevent future incidents of this sort, including the enactment of the Food Safety Law and reinstatement of the no-exemption quality inspection of food products. In this paper, we analyse the wide-ranging impacts and root causes of the recent dairy crisis in China. We also examine how the crisis has been handled and what measures have been put in place in its aftermath. Then we discuss policy implications for promoting the sustainability of China's dairy industry. Lessons learned from this crisis, as well as implications for policy improvements, should be valuable for the development of a sustainable dairy industry in other regions of the world.

Terahertz imaging: applications and perspectives

Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, and especially THz imaging, holds large potential in the field of nondestructive, contact-free testing. The ongoing advances in the development of THz systems, as well as the appearance of the first related commercial products, indicate that large-scale market introduction of THz systems is rapidly approaching. We review selected industrial applications for THz systems, comprising inline monitoring of compounding processes, plastic weld joint inspection, birefringence analysis of fiber-reinforced components, water distribution monitoring in polymers and plants, as well as quality inspection of food products employing both continuous wave and pulsed THz systems.
