Toward real-time, volumetric dosimetry for FLASH-capable clinical synchrocyclotrons using protoacoustic imaging.

Fast low angle shot hyperfractionation (FLASH) radiotherapy (RT) holds promise for improving treatment outcomes and reducing side effects but poses challenges in radiation delivery accuracy due to its ultra-high dose rates. This necessitates the development of novel imaging and verification technologies tailored to these conditions. Our study explores the effectiveness of proton-induced acoustic imaging (PAI) in tracking the Bragg peak in three dimensions and in real time during FLASH proton irradiations, offering a method for volumetric beam imaging at both conventional and FLASH dose rates. We developed a three-dimensional (3D) PAI technique using a 256-element ultrasound detector array for FLASH dose rate proton beams. In the study, we tested protoacoustic signal with a beamline of a FLASH-capable synchrocyclotron, setting the distal 90% of the Bragg peak around 35mm away from the ultrasound array. This configuration allowed us to assess various total proton radiation doses, maintaining a consistent beam output of 21 pC/pulse. We also explored a spectrum of dose rates, from 15 Gy/s up to a FLASH rate of 48 Gy/s, by administering a set number of pulses. Furthermore, we implemented a three-dot scanning beam approach to observe the distinct movements of individual Bragg peaks using PAI. All these procedures utilized a proton beam energy of 180 MeV to achieve the maximum possible dose rate. Our findings indicate a strong linear relationship between protoacoustic signal amplitudes and delivered doses (R2=0.9997), with a consistent fit across different dose rates. The technique successfully provided 3D renderings of Bragg peaks at FLASH rates, validated through absolute Gamma index values. The protoacoustic system demonstrates effectiveness in 3D visualization and tracking of the Bragg peak during FLASH proton therapy, representing a notable advancement in proton therapy quality assurance. This method promises enhancements in protoacoustic image guidance and real-time dosimetry, paving the way for more accurate and effective treatments in ultra-high dose rate therapy environments.

Multi-institutional consensus on machine QA for isochronous cyclotron-based systems delivering ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) pencil beam scanning proton therapy in transmission mode.

The first clinical trials to assess the feasibility of FLASH radiotherapy in humans have started (FAST-01, FAST-02) and more trials are foreseen. To increase comparability between trials it is important to assure treatment quality and therefore establish a standard for machine quality assurance (QA). Currently, the AAPM TG-224 report is considered as the standard on machine QA for proton therapy, however, it was not intended to be used for ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) proton beams, which have gained interest due to the observation of the FLASH effect. The aim of this study is to find consensus on practical guidelines on machine QA for UHDR proton beams in transmission mode in terms of which QA is required, how they should be done, which detectors are suitable for UHDR machine QA, and what tolerance limits should be applied. A risk assessment to determine the gaps in the current standard for machine QA was performed by an international group of medical physicists. Based on that, practical guidelines on how to perform machine QA for UHDR proton beams were proposed. The risk assessment clearly identified the need for additional guidance on temporal dosimetry, addressing dose rate (constancy), dose spillage, and scanning speed. In addition, several minor changes from AAPM TG-224 were identified; define required dose rate levels, the use of clinically relevant dose levels, and the use of adapted beam settings to minimize activation of detector and phantom materials or to avoid saturation effects of specific detectors. The final report was created based on discussions and consensus. Consensus was reached on what QA is required for UHDR scanning proton beams in transmission mode for isochronous cyclotron-based systems and how they should be performed. However, the group discussions also showed that there is a lack of high temporal resolution detectors and sufficient QA data to set appropriate limits for some of the proposed QA procedures.

Development and validation of an automatic commissioning tool for the Monte Carlo dose engine in myQA iON

Independent dose verification with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations is an important feature of proton therapy quality assurance (QA). However, clinical integration of such tools often generates an additional and complex workload for medical physicists. The preparation of the necessary clinical inputs, such as the machine beam model, should therefore be automated. In this work, a methodology for automatic MC commissioning has been devised, validated, and developed into a MATLAB tool for the users of myQA iON, the recent QA platform of IBA Dosimetry. With this workflow, all necessary parameters can easily be tuned using dedicated optimization methods. For the geometrical beam parameters (phase space), the assumption of a single or double Gaussian is made. To model the energy spectrum, a Gaussian function is assumed and parameters are optimized using either MC simulations or a library of pre-computed Bragg peaks. For the absolute dose calibration, commissioning fields can be reproduced with the dose engine to retrieve the necessary parameters. We discuss in a first time the tool efficiency and show that one can optimize all parameters in less than 4 min per energy with excellent accuracy. We then validate a beam model obtained with the tool by simulating homogeneous spread-out Bragg peaks (SOBPs) and patient QA plans previously measured in water. An average range agreement of 0.29 ± 0.34 mm is achieved for the SOBPs while 3%/3 mm local gamma passing rates reach 99.3% on average over all 62 measured patient QA planes, which is well within clinical tolerances.

The dose magnifying glass quality assurance system for daily proton therapy range verification

Proton therapy has a distinct dosimetric advantage over conventional photon therapy due to its Bragg peak profile. This allows greater accuracy in dose delivery and dose conformation to the target, however it requires greater precision in setup, delivery and for quality assurance (QA) procedures. The AAPM TG 224 report recommends daily range and spot position checks with tolerance on the order of a millimetre. Daily QA systems must therefore be efficient for daily use and be capable of sub-millimetre precision however few suitable commercial systems are available. In this work, a compact, real-time daily QA system is optimised and characterised for proton range verification using an ad-hoc Geant4 simulation. The system is comprised of a monolithic silicon diode array detector embedded in a perspex phantom. The detector is orientated at an angular offset to the incident proton beam to allow range in perspex to be determined for flat proton fields. The accuracy of the system for proton range in perspex measurements was experimentally evaluated over the full range of clinical proton energies. The mean R 100, R 90 and R 80 ranges measured with the system were accurate within ±0.6 mm of simulated ranges in a perspex phantom for all energies assessed. This system allows real-time read-out of individual detector channels also making it appropriate for temporal beam delivery diagnostics and for spot position monitoring along one axis. The system presented provides a suitable, economical and efficient alternative for daily QA in proton therapy.

A machine learning framework with anatomical prior for online dose verification using positron emitters and PET in proton therapy

We developed a machine learning framework in order to establish the correlation between dose and activity distributions in proton therapy. A recurrent neural network was used to predict dose distribution in three dimensions based on the information of proton-induced positron emitters. Hounsfield Unit (HU) information from CT images and analytically derived stopping power (SP) information were incorporated as auxiliary inputs. Four different scenarios were investigated: Activity only, Activity + HU, Activity + SP and Activity + HU + SP. The performance was quantitatively studied in terms of mean absolute error (MAE) and mean relative error (MRE), under different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In addition to the first dataset of mono-energetic beams, three additional datasets were validated to help evaluate the generalization capability of our proposed model: a dataset of a lower SNR, five reconstructed PET images, and a dataset of spread-out Bragg peaks. Good verification accuracy of dose verification in three dimensions is demonstrated. The inclusion of anatomical information improves both accuracy and generalization. For an activity profile with an SNR of 4 (the mono-energetic case), the framework is able to obtain an MRE of ∼ 0.99% over the whole range and a range uncertainty of ∼ 0.27 mm. The machine learning-based framework may emerge as a useful tool to allow for online dose verification and quality assurance in proton therapy.

Feasibility study of patient-specific dose verification in proton therapy utilizing positron emission tomography (PET) and generative adversarial network (GAN).

Online dose verification based on proton-induced positron emitters is a promising strategy for quality assurance in proton therapy. Because of the nonlinear correlation between dose and the activity distributions, a machine learning-based approach was developed to establish their relationship. Simulations were carried out using a pencil beam scanning system and a computed tomography (CT) image-based phantom. A DiscoGAN model was developed to perform dose verification for both central and off-center lines. Besides the activity as input, HU information from CT images and stopping power (SP) prior were incorporated as auxiliary features for the model. The performance was quantitatively studied in terms of mean absolute error (MAE) and mean relative error (MRE), under different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In addition to a dataset comprising monoenergetic beams, two additional datasets were generated to evaluate the model's generalization capability: five reconstructed PET images based on an in-beam PET system and a dataset comprising spread-out Bragg peaks (SOBPs). The feasibility of dose verification was successfully demonstrated for all three datasets. For the monoenergetic case (i.e., raw activity of positron emitters), the MRE is found to be <1% for the central lines and 5% for the off-center lines, respectively. The range uncertainty is found to be less than 1mm. The prediction based on five PET images, which take into account the detection of 511-keV photons and image reconstruction, yields slightly inferior performance. For the SOBP case, the MRE of the center lines is found to be <3% and the range uncertainty is <1mm. The inclusion of anatomical information (HU and SP) improves both accuracy and generalization of the DiscoGAN model. The combination of proton-induced positron emitters, in-beam PET, and machine learning may become a useful tool allowing for patient-specific online dose verification in proton therapy.

Feasibility of patient specific quality assurance for proton therapy based on independent dose calculation and predicted outcomes

PurposePatient specific quality assurance (PSQA) is required to verify the treatment delivery and the dose calculation by the treatment planning system (TPS). The objective of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility to substitute resource consuming measurement based PSQA (PSQAM) by independent dose recalculations (PSQAIDC), and that PSQAIDC results may be interpreted in a clinically relevant manner using normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) and tumor control probability (TCP) models. Methods and materialsA platform for the automatic execution of the two following PSQAIDC workflows was implemented: (i) using the TPS generated plan and (ii) using treatment delivery log files (log-plan). 30 head and neck cancer (HNC) patients were retrospectively investigated. PSQAM results were compared with those from the two PSQAIDC workflows. TCP/NTCP variations between PSQAIDC and the initial TPS dose distributions were investigated. Additionally, for two example patients that showed low passing PSQAM results, eight error scenarios were simulated and verified via measurements and log-plan based calculations. For all error scenarios ΔTCP/NTCP values between the nominal and the log-plan dose were assessed. ResultsResults of PSQAM and PSQAIDC from both implemented workflows agree within 2.7% in terms of gamma pass ratios. The verification of simulated error scenarios shows comparable trends between PSQAM and PSQAIDC. Based on the 30 investigated HNC patients, PSQAIDC observed dose deviations translate into a minor variation in NTCP values. As expected, TCP is critically related to observed dose deviations. ConclusionsWe demonstrated a feasibility to substitute PSQAM with PSQAIDC. In addition, we showed that PSQAIDC results can be interpreted in clinically more relevant manner, for instance using TCP/NTCP.

Technical Note: Machine learning approaches for range and dose verification in proton therapy using proton-induced positron emitters.

Online proton range/dose verification based on measurements of proton-induced positron emitters is a promising strategy for quality assurance in proton therapy. Because of the nonlinear correlation between the dose distribution and the activity distribution of positron emitters in addition to the presence of noise, machine learning approaches were proposed to establish their relationship. Simulations were carried out with a spot-scanning proton system using GATE-8.0 and Geant4-10.3 toolkit with a computed tomography (CT)-based patient phantom. The one-dimensional (1D) distributions of positron emitters and radiation dose were obtained. A feedforward neural network classification model comprising two hidden layers, was developed to estimate whether the range is within a preset threshold. A recurrent neural network (RNN) regression model comprising three layers and ten neurons in each hidden layer was developed to estimate dose distribution. The performance was quantitatively studied in terms of mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) under different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. The feasibility of proton range and dose verification using the proposed neural network framework was demonstrated. The feedforward NN model achieves high classification accuracy close to 100% for individual classes without bias. The RNN model is able to accurately predict the 1D dose distribution for different energies and irradiation positions. When the SNR of the input activity profiles is above 4, the framework is able to predict with an MAE of ~0.60mm and an MSE of ~0.066. Moreover, the model demonstrates a good capability of generalization. The RNN model is found to be effective in identifying the relationship between the distributions of dose and positron emitters. The machine learning-based framework and RNN models may be a useful tool to allow for accurate online range and dose verification based on proton-induced positron emitters.

Range and dose verification in proton therapy using proton-induced positron emitters and recurrent neural networks (RNNs)

Online proton range/dose verification based on measurements of proton-induced positron emitters is a promising strategy for quality assurance in proton therapy. Because of the nonlinear correlation between the dose distribution and the activity distribution of positron emitters, we aim to establish their relationship using recurrent neural network models (LSTM, BiLSTM, GRU, BiGRU and Seq2seq). Simulations were carried out with a spot-scanning proton system using Geant4-10.3 toolkit and a CT-based patient phantom. The 1D distributions of positron emitters and radiation dose were obtained. Training data were modeled for different beam energy, irradiation positions and counting statistics. The prediction accuracy of range and dose were quantitatively studied. The impact of including anatomical information (HU values in CT images) on the prediction performance was investigated. The BiGRU demonstrates the most stable and accurate performance with good capability of generalization, especially with the inclusion of anatomical information. When the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the 1D activity profiles is about 3, the range accuracy can be within 0.5 mm and the dose accuracy close to the peak region is <5% (relative uncertainty between prediction and raw input for all datasets). The feasibility of proton range and dose verification using the RNN-based framework was demonstrated. The RNN-based framework promises to provide a reliable and effective way for online monitoring, quality assurance and ultimately allows for adaptive proton therapy.

AAPM task group 224: Comprehensive proton therapy machine quality assurance.

Task Group (TG) 224 was established by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine's Science Council under the Radiation Therapy Committee and Work Group on Particle Beams. The group was charged with developing comprehensive quality assurance (QA) guidelines and recommendations for the three commonly employed proton therapy techniques for beam delivery: scattering, uniform scanning, and pencil beam scanning. This report supplements established QA guidelines for therapy machine performance for other widely used modalities, such as photons and electrons (TG 142, TG 40, TG 24, TG 22, TG 179, and Medical Physics Practice Guideline 2a) and shares their aims of ensuring the safe, accurate, and consistent delivery of radiation therapy dose distributions to patients. To provide a basis from which machine-specific QA procedures can be developed, the report first describes the different delivery techniques and highlights the salient components of the related machine hardware. Depending on the particular machine hardware, certain procedures may be more or less important, and each institution should investigate its own situation. In lieu of such investigations, this report identifies common beam parameters that are typically checked, along with the typical frequencies of those checks (daily, weekly, monthly, or annually). The rationale for choosing these checks and their frequencies is briefly described. Short descriptions of suggested tools and procedures for completing some of the periodic QA checks are also presented. Recommended tolerance limits for each of the recommended QA checks are tabulated, and are based on the literature and on consensus data from the clinical proton experience of the task group members. We hope that this and other reports will serve as a reference for clinical physicists wishing either to establish a proton therapy QA program or to evaluate an existing one.

Design of a QA method to characterize submillimeter-sized PBS beam properties using a 2D ionization chamber array

Pencil beam scanning (PBS) periodic quality assurance (QA) programs ensure the beam delivered to patients is within technical specifications. Two critical specifications for PBS delivery are the beam width and position. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a 2D ionization chamber array, such as the MatriXX detector (IBA Dosimetry, Schwarzenbruck, Germany), can be used to characterize submillimeter-sized PBS beam properties. The motivation is to use standard equipment, which may have pixel spacing coarser than the pencil beam size, and simplify QA workflow.The MatriXX pixels are cylindrical in shape with 4.5 mm diameter and are spaced 7.62 mm from center to center. Two major effects limit the ability of using the MatriXX to measure the spot position and width accurately. The first effect is that too few pixels sample the Gaussian shaped pencil beam profile and the second effect is volume averaging of the Gaussian profile over the pixel sensitive volumes. We designed a method that overcomes both limitations and hence enables the use of the MatriXX to characterize sub-millimeter-sized PBS beam properties. This method uses a cross-like irradiation pattern that is designed to increase the number of sampling data points and a modified Gaussian fitting technique to correct for volume averaging effects. Detector signals were calculated in this study and random noise and setup errors were added to simulate measured data.With the techniques developed in this work, the MatriXX detector can be used to characterize the position and width of sub-millimeter, σ = 0.7 mm, sized pencil beams with uncertainty better than 3% relative to σ. With the irradiation only covering 60% of the MatriXX, the position and width of σ = 0.9 mm sized pencil beams can be determined with uncertainty better than 3% relative to σ. If one were to not use a cross-like irradiation pattern, then the position and width of σ = 3.6 mm sized pencil beams can be determined with uncertainty better than 3% relative to σ. If one were to not use a cross-like pattern nor volume averaging corrections, then the position and width of σ = 5.0 mm sized pencil beams can be determined with uncertainty better than 3% relative to σ.This work helps to simplify periodic QA in proton therapy because more routinely used ionization chamber arrays can be used to characterize narrow pencil beam properties.

32. To Proton therapy quality assurance optimization through a new phantom design

Introduction The Antoine Lacassagne Center is equipped with the first ProteusOne® (IBA PT) which delivers a maximum energy beam of 226 MeV with the Pencil Beam Scanning technique. Nowadays, the daily dosimetric quality assurance of the machine includes uniformity, symmetry and field size checks of a 20 × 20 cm2 field with range shifter, the range constancy for one maximum energy and absolute dose measurement on reference conditions. All these measurements are carried out with a matrix of ionization chambers (MatriXX (IBA Dosimetry GmbH)) and last about 40 min. This work presents a phantom which allows to check more dosimetric parameters every day in less time. Methods We designed a “UnickOne” phantom in PMMA that allows daily measurements of constancy in 2 irradiations. The gantry angle is 0° and the phantom is placed on the MatriXX on the table. During the first irradiation, we check: - The beam range at different energies with two wedges of different thicknesses, thus transposing the distal measurement into a transverse measurement. - Uniformity, symmetry and field size of 2 rectangular fields. - Spot size and position at 2 different depths using a 5 spots pattern in two cubes of different thicknesses. Indirectly, a verification of the Source Axis Distance is also obtained. During the second irradiation, the central cube (10 × 10 cm2 and a thickness 5 cm) is irradiated with a field of 8 × 8 cm2 and the absolute dose is measured at the center of this field. The ranges of two others beam energies are measured in the wedges described above. The measurements are analyzed with Matlab software and exported as daily values. Results Thanks to the UnickOne phantom and the MatriXX, it is possible to control in less than 20 min beam parameters that are usually only measured monthly because the usual detectors (2D Scintillator, Multi-Layer Ionization Chambers) are long and hard to position properly. The daily values extracted from the Matlab analysis are used as constancy measurements while accurate checks are still carried out monthly with dedicated detectors. Conclusions The all-in-one phantom described in this work greatly enhances and optimizes daily control of the ProteusOne. Regarding the results obtained, this phantom will soon be used in clinical routine at the Center Antoine LACASSAGNE.

Characteristics of fiber-optic radiation sensor for passive scattering proton beams

The aims of this study were to investigate the characteristics of a fiber-optic radiation sensor (FORS) that detects the fluorescence light produced by proton beam and to verify its effectiveness in proton therapy quality assurance (QA). Various characteristics of the FORS were investigated, such as the linearity of its relationships to the sensitive length of fiber for the proton beams of intermediate ranges (165.46 and 178.37 MeV) and to the measured dose, as well as its dose rate dependence. In addition, patient specific precription dose QA was conducted for five patients actually undergoing proton therapy and the results were compared with the doses measured using an ion chamber. The results show that the signal of the FORS is linearly related to the sensitive length of fiber and to the irradiated dose in the range from 1 to 500 cGy. The QA results obtained using the FORS system showed good agreement with the corresponding ion chamber results, with an average difference of 0.40% and a standard deviation of 0.35%. The FORS was dose-rate independent for proton currents up to 5 Gy/min. The profiles of various proton beams obtained using an array of FORS, which were measured as an application of the developed dosimetric system, closely agreed with the profiles acquired using EBT3 film. In summary, the experimental results of FORS demonstrated its effectiveness for use in various proton therapy QA tests.

Characterization of proton pencil beam scanning and passive beam using a high spatial resolution solid-state microdosimeter.

This work aims to characterize a proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) and passive double scattering (DS) systems as well as to measure parameters relevant to the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of the beam using a silicon on insulator (SOI) microdosimeter with well-defined 3D sensitive volumes (SV). The dose equivalent downstream and laterally outside of a clinical PBS treatment field was assessed and compared to that of a DS beam. A novel silicon microdosimeter with well-defined 3D SVs was used in this study. It was connected to low noise electronics, allowing for detection of lineal energies as low as 0.15keV/μm. The microdosimeter was placed at various depths in a water phantom along the central axis of the proton beam, and at the distal part of the spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) in 0.5mm increments. The RBE values of the pristine Bragg peak (BP) and SOBP were derived using the measured microdosimetric lineal energy spectra as inputs to the modified microdosimetric kinetic model (MKM). Geant4 simulations were performed in order to verify the calculated depth-dose distribution from the treatment planning system (TPS) and to compare the simulated dose-mean lineal energy to the experimental results. For a 131MeV PBS spot (124.6mm R90 range in water), the measured dose-mean lineal energy yD¯ increased from 2keV/μm at the entrance to 8keV/μm in the BP, with a maximum value of 10keV/μm at the distal edge. The derived RBE distribution for the PBS beam slowly increased from 0.97±0.14 at the entrance to 1.04±0.09 proximal to the BP, then to 1.1±0.08 in the BP, and steeply rose to 1.57±0.19 at the distal part of the BP. The RBE distribution for the DS SOBP beam was approximately 0.96±0.16 to 1.01±0.16 at shallow depths, and 1.01±0.16 to 1.28±0.17 within the SOBP. The RBE significantly increased from 1.29±0.17 to 1.43±0.18 at the distal edge of the SOBP. The SOI microdosimeter with its well-defined 3D SV has applicability in characterizing proton radiation fields and can measure relevant physical parameters to model the RBE with submillimeter spatial resolution. It has been shown that for a physical dose of 1.82Gy at the BP, the derived RBE based on the MKM model increased from 1.14 to 1.6 in the BP and its distal part. Good agreement was observed between the experimental and simulation results, confirming the potential application of SOI microdosimeter with 3D SV for quality assurance in proton therapy.

Quality assurance in proton beam therapy using a plastic scintillator and a commercially available digital camera.

PurposeIn this article, we evaluate a plastic scintillation detector system for quality assurance in proton therapy using a BC‐408 plastic scintillator, a commercial camera, and a computer.MethodsThe basic characteristics of the system were assessed in a series of proton irradiations. The reproducibility and response to changes of dose, dose‐rate, and proton energy were determined. Photographs of the scintillation light distributions were acquired, and compared with Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations and with depth‐dose curves measured with an ionization chamber. A quenching effect was observed at the Bragg peak of the 60 MeV proton beam where less light was produced than expected. We developed an approach using Birks equation to correct for this quenching. We simulated the linear energy transfer (LET) as a function of depth in Geant4 and found Birks constant by comparing the calculated LET and measured scintillation light distribution. We then used the derived value of Birks constant to correct the measured scintillation light distribution for quenching using Geant4.ResultsThe corrected light output from the scintillator increased linearly with dose. The system is stable and offers short‐term reproducibility to within 0.80%. No dose rate dependency was observed in this work.ConclusionsThis approach offers an effective way to correct for quenching, and could provide a method for rapid, convenient, routine quality assurance for clinical proton beams. Furthermore, the system has the advantage of providing 2D visualization of individual radiation fields, with potential application for quality assurance of complex, time‐varying fields.

Feasibility study of a novel multi-strip silicon detector for use in proton therapy range verification quality assurance

The characterisation of a novel multi-strip silicon detector, the serial Dose Magnifying Glass, to incident 60 MeV mono-energetic proton beams, typical for ocular melanoma treatment, was performed by means of Geant4 simulations and experimental methods. Geant4 simulations were performed to determine the applicability and potential of the detector for proton beam range verification with high spatial resolution. Experimental characterisation was performed using the CATANA beam line to confirm the Monte Carlo feasibility study and determine the detector response to incident proton beams of 5 mm, 13 mm, 25 mm and 36 mm diameter, in addition to the detector response when PMMA slabs are positioned between the detector and the beam nozzle. Results indicate the suitability of the detector for proton beam range verification in proton therapy Quality Assurance.

Monte Carlo characterisation of the Dose Magnifying Glass for proton therapy quality assurance

A Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation study was carried out to characterise a novel silicon strip detector, the Dose Magnifying Glass (DMG), for use in proton therapy Quality Assurance. We investigated the possibility to use DMG to determine the energy of the incident proton beam. The advantages of DMG are quick response, easy operation and high spatial resolution. In this work we theoretically proved that DMG can be used for QA in the determination of the energy of the incident proton beam, for ocular and prostate cancer therapy. The study was performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations Experimental measurements are currently on their way to confirm the results of this simulation study.
