The Educational Development Interview: a guided conversation supporting professional learning about teaching practice in higher education

ABSTRACT Drawing on the qualitative research interview, the authors propose the Educational Development Interview is an important but understudied form of significant conversation and educational development practice. By summarizing types of interviews from educational development literature, and describing our recent use of interviews for producing videos and podcasts about teaching practice, we contend that the Educational Development Interview can be used to: elicit reflexive practice about teaching and learning, increase academics’ self-confidence, influence their sense of identity as educators, and may increase capacity for and visibility of collegial conversations about teaching and learning.

Trust, but verify.. Power relations and control practices in a smart working environment

The world of working is changing and the technological transformations are playing a relevant role in this change. In particular, new technologies are making the physical boundaries of traditional offices increasingly permeable, allowing the diffusion of New Ways of Working (Demerouti et al., 2014; Koops and Helms, 2014), such as smart working. This paper, based on a qualitative research and discursive interviews, intends to reflect on the introduction and top-down management of smart working within a banking institution. At the same time, it aims to grasp the role attributed to and played by technology in its implementation. Starting from the two reconstructed stories, I shall show if and how the innovations introduced whereby technologies enable us to work remotely, are changing existing power relations and what control dynamics emerge from the field.

MALAYSIA'S FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT RELATIONS WITHIN THE ORGANISATION DEVELOPING EIGHT EONOMIC COOPERATION (D8) WITHIN COUNTERPARTS

Malaysia is a member of Developing-8 (D-8), which facilitated the formation of bilateral trade relations among member countries. This study focuses on Malaysia’s foreign direct investments (FDIs) within D-8. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the FDI ties with D-8 member states, where Malaysia must focus on cooperating for long-term investments and examining the existing FDI policies under Malaysia and its D-8 counterparts, as well as studying the opportunity of interdependence between Malaysia’s FDIs with D-8 member states. The main issue is the imbalance of Malaysia’s FDI preference with D-8 member states, which is followed by the weakness of Malaysia’s FDI outwards policy, specialised among the D-8 counterparts. Thus, Malaysia’s FFDI lacks penetration with D-8 member states. The qualitative research method, data collection, interviews, and content analysis method are used for this study. The respondents’ agencies for interviews are experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), The Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations Division of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI and the Foreign Investment Promotion Division of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). Coding techniques are applied for the coding process of the content analysis. This study also uses the theories of interdependence and political economy with SWOT analysis to examine the implementation of Malaysia’s FDI with D-8 counterparts. The findings of the study show that Malaysia is looking for quality investments without choosing where the investments come from, and FDIs with D-8 counterparts in several sectors can still be implemented if the D-8 counterparts are offering quality investments for Malaysia.

Re-thinking research interview methods through the multisensory constitution of place

This paper highlights a methodological vagueness within the existing qualitative research interview literature related to reflecting where interviews takes place. The aim is to interrogate how the use of the concept of emplaced participation can account for the multisensory constitution of place within interviews as well as how the place can provide an opportunity to generate knowledge about participants’ everyday practices. Casey’s understanding of place as a gathering and Pink’s perspectives on emplaced participation provide a sensitive epistemological approach that can be applied by researchers outside the field of ethnography. Based on empirical ethnographic material from fieldwork in Denmark, this paper makes a novel contribution to how researchers can use sensory and emplaced experience before and during an interview. We argue that, if we cease taking emplaced dimensions for granted, new methodological techniques can be developed, which, in turn, can lead to new types of knowledge of practice.

The dual role of nurses as mothers during the pandemic period: qualitative study

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the changing routines of nurses in maternal role due to Covid-19 outbreak. This is qualitative interview research and is based on the descriptions of the interviews with the participants. Interviews were recorded on the phone with nurses. It was semi-structured and used a snowball sample, and in-depth interviews were made. We determined three themes in this research. The themes are 1. Imperatives of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2. Theme: Concerns about infecting their children with Covid-19, 3. Theme: Impaired communication with children. Also, we determined in the themes; nurses express difficulty about child care, communication with children and concerns about infecting their children. Nurses and their children have been adversely affected by this process and have a feeling of inadequate parental roles.

Patient perspectives on relatives and significant others in cancer care: An interview study.

In this study, patient perspectives on their relative's involvement in gynaecological cancer treatment and care are investigated. In total 17 women participated in two qualitative research interviews each during their treatment period. By applying a phenomenological-hermeneutic text interpretation methodology, the findings were systematically identified, interpreted, and discussed. This process gave rise to two main themes: "Relatives include more than family members" and "Interactions with relatives and significant others". The findings showed that, besides family members, in particular neighbours and people who had experienced cancer themselves were an important and valuable support to the patients. Help with daily activities and errands, and providing informal company, represented a substantial support in difficult times, and generated a sense of social belonging and the experience of fellowship. Interactions with relatives were influenced by the patients' personal reflections and experiences and posed several positive as well as negative challenges. Firstly, the patients had many concerns about passing on the news of their cancer disease to their social network. Loneliness, in various representations, was a persistent theme, which reflected various experiences of vulnerability. Positive family relations represented a unique resource during cancer treatment; however, due to relatives' worries or lack of support, patients could experience strain. This perspective on relatives' involvement - from the patient's point of view - seems to be understudied.

Pulmonary hypertension due to interstitial lung disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a patient experience study of symptoms and their impact on quality of life.

Pulmonary hypertension resulting from chronic lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease is categorized by the World Health Organization as Group 3 pulmonary hypertension. To identify the symptoms and impacts of World Health Organization Group 3 pulmonary hypertension and to capture data related to the patient experience of this disease, qualitative research interviews were undertaken with 3 clinical experts and 14 individuals with pulmonary hypertension secondary to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or interstitial lung disease. Shortness of breath, fatigue, cough, and swelling were the most frequently reported symptoms of pulmonary hypertension due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or interstitial lung disease, and shortness of breath was further identified as the single most bothersome symptom for most patients (71.4%). Interview participants also described experiencing a number of impacts related to pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary hypertension symptoms, including limitations in the ability to perform activities of daily living and impacts on physical functioning, family life, and social life as well as emotional impacts, which included frustration, depression, anxiety, isolation, and sadness. Results of these qualitative interviews offer an understanding of the patient experience of pulmonary hypertension due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or interstitial lung disease, including insight into the symptoms and impacts that are most important to patients in this population. As such, these results may help guide priorities in clinical treatment and assist researchers in their selection of patient-reported outcome measures for clinical trials in patients with pulmonary hypertension due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or interstitial lung disease.

GOVERNANCE AND TOURISM RESILIENCE DURING THE COVID19 CRISIS. CASE STUDY BUKOVINA, ROMANIA

The COVID-19 outbreak which pushed the public actors to seek out customized solutions adjusted for local development. The present paper investigates the role played by the public administration in rebuilding and supporting the tourist sector in Bukovina which has been severely affected by the restrictions imposed by pandemic. The study used a mixed research method: quantitative analysis (applied questionnaires) and qualitative research (interviews). Although the local administration has a limited jurisdiction of the territorial-administrative units, the current sanitary crisis along with the economic one have started to affect territories and populations more and more extended, which pushed the public actors to seek out customized solutions adjusted for local development. The results show that the types of governance applied by the county and local administration will have a decisive impact upon the recovery of the tourism sector.

English Language Teachers' Attitudes towards Instructional Policy in Public Secondary Schools: An Interview Study

The purpose of this study was to explore secondary school English teachers' attitudes towards English language instructional policy as given in the official English language curriculum documents. This study intended to understand teachers' attitudes by exploring their beliefs, feelings, and practices constituting their attitudes. This study used a qualitative semi-structured interview research design, and a purposive sampling technique was used to recruit 15 secondary English language teachers from different public schools of Lahore, having at least three years of experience. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data. The analysis of the data revealed a gap between teachers' beliefs, feelings, and practices. Teachers believed that all proposed methods worth using, and they felt that the methods were beneficial for teaching English at the secondary level. However, the situation was quite different concerning practices. Discussion and cooperative learning strategies were the most preferred methods to use besides the lecture method at the secondary level. Teachers also described the factors which hinder the use of all policy recommended methods.

An Ecosystem Innovation Framework: Assessing Mobility as a Service in Budapest

Smart Mobility and the introduction of innovation in the complex and dynamic actor ecosystem of urban transport is faced with the need to manage change in order to secure sustainability and protect against negative externalities. The present contribution provides decision-makers with a tool to assess innovation strategies and monitor change over time. The proposed EcoSystem Innovation Framework (ESIF) is applied to a flagship innovation: Mobility as a Service (MaaS). The application concerns the City of Budapest, a location with highly-utilized resources and low car ownership, in contrast to other locations where MaaS is implemented. The ESIF is constructed through qualitative research (stakeholder workshops, interviews, document collection and analysis) for three (3) points in time: Summer 2018; Summer 2019 and end of 2020 (first year of the COVID-19 pandemic). The ESIF analysis was able to guide decision-makers and highlight potential future trends demonstrating the potential of the ESIF framework. For the City of Budapest, the ESIF highlighted the delicate balance in the promotion of MaaS, as the dichotomy between public and private on-demand mobility may trigger a negative modal shift. The COVID-19 pandemic has enhanced this potential. Despite public sector efforts, market opportunity has surfaced leading to contrasting interests in the ecosystem.

Digital extraction: Blockchain traceability in mineral supply chains

Digital data — including technologically-mediated data generated by blockchain-enabled traceability — is performing an increasingly integral role in extractive operations, but scarce attention has been paid to the structuring effect of these digital technologies or the socio-economic spatiality of data-driven mining operations. Drawing on extensive qualitative research (interviews, participant observation, and two sets of survey data among actors relevant to these mineral supply chains), this article advances the notion of “digital extraction” to describe the collection, analysis, and instrumentalization of digital data generated under the banner of blockchain-based due diligence, chain of custody certifications, and various transparency mechanisms, situated alongside and in support of mineral extraction. The article mobilizes concepts from political geography and political ecology to argue that digital technologies of traceability in extractive processes potentially create new forms of control and exclusion or exacerbate existing social, political, and territorial dispossession through asymmetric relations of power and knowledge in mineral supply chains. Despite industry efforts to make mineral supply chains more sustainable by resorting to digital certification and traceability, the strategic uses of uncertainty, ignorance, and ambiguity undergirding blockchain-enabled traceability systems fail to challenge existing inequalities in resource use and access or fulfill the promise of transparency and accountability.

Digital transformation and value-based selling activities: seller and buyer perspectives

PurposeThis study aimed to examine the digital transformation of business-to-business (B2B) sales and its effects on the management of value-based selling.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted a qualitative interview research design. A total of two participant groups—one consisting of sales management professionals and the other consisting of buyers—were created to conduct abductive data analysis to gain a new understanding of B2B sales management.FindingsAs a result of the digital transformation of sales, companies are shifting B2B sales towards value-based selling using a more proactive, continuous process wherein digital value co-creation activities play a big role. Similarly, their buyers now expect more proactive communication about new value propositions, but social media channels are of little importance to most B2B buyers. The management of digital value co-creation activities should be addressed from the sales ecosystem perspective, where non-sellers tend to have a strong role in communicating new value propositions.Research limitations/implicationsThere needs to be further research on digital value co-creation activities in the sales ecosystem, as value-based selling requires that selling organizations focus more on educational digital content marketing and engagement with non-sellers via both marketing and sales activities.Practical implicationsCompanies rarely exploit experts and project personnel when implementing digital sales strategies; however, they often meet with customers personally and network with them. This requires a broader perspective on sales management.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies to explore the management of value-based selling from both seller and buyer perspectives.

New Trend of Information Literacy from Leisure Reading Behavior and Experiences of Junior High School Students

Information literacy education in school libraries is based on abilities of personal reading and learning. The research was used semi-structured interview in qualitative research to understand the reading behavior and experiences of junior high school students who are leisure reading lover. The analysis of qualitative data included both hermeneutic phenomenology and axial coding in grounded theory. According to research obtained, leisure reading behavior of junior high school students have several conclusion. First, The interesting content is the main motive. Second, the purposes of leisure reading behavior may divide into the tool goal and the non- tool goal. Third, internet is acting both important information source and channel. The analysis of leisure reading experiences of junior high school students have several conclusions. First, there are three kinds of reading styles that included comprehensive reading, tool reading and the non- tool reading. Second, participants often use internet communication software to exchange their reading information in internet reading. Third, participants often read datas which they searched or browsed, E-mail, internet literature and book description in the internet. According to research conclusions, this article discussed how to develop information literacy in junior high school students. These ways includes that use internet technologies to improve interaction, have library instruction classes depend on reading purposes, integrate reading information in school effectively and promotes software and hardware equipment in school to reduce the imformation divide. Finally, this article thought new trend of information literacy.

Interviews in qualitative health care research

INTRODUCTION: Interview is a conversation to procure information where an interviewer performs the action of questioning and an interviewee responds to the asked questions. The widely used modes are ‘Face-to-Face Interview’, ‘Telephonic Interview’, and ‘Interview via Electronic/Multimedia’ approach. Information acquisitions via interviews have proved their practicality under a wide range of considerations and aspects in domains of healthcare, social sciences, management, etc. Proper selection of the method right from planning, and establishment deliver the required information to the interviewer in the best expressible, and documented form to deliver results bringing the best after a whole planned workout of an interview. OBJECTIVE: In the present article, the author would be focused on the interview categorization in qualitative health care research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Only PubMed and SCOPUS Databases were searched from inception to September 2020 for this narrative review. Only English language articles were searched with keywords, “Interview”, “Face-to-Face”, “Qualitative research” and “Category of Interview” and linked with Boolean words such as, “AND”, “OR” and “NOT”. Conference abstracts and proceedings articles were excluded. This narrative review did not followed PRISMA statement. RESULTS: The selection of interviews to be used in qualitative health care research should be based on time allocation, gender, prioritization of privacy, and requirement of the content of information. The interviewer should ask one question at a time, present with normalcy in facial and body expression following response even after noting the answers to be unpredictable and encourage the response rate to the highest for optimizing the results obtained. CONCLUSION: Various important aspects of interview in qualitative health care research has been discussed in this narrative review.

Department chair as mentor: perceptions of young female faculty members from Kazakhstan

PurposeThe study explores factors affecting workplace–mentoring relationships of young female faculty members and their department chairs.Design/methodology/approachThe author used a qualitative interview research design to answer the research questions of the study. Semi-structured interviews of ten female faculty members from Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan were analyzed with the help of thematic coding and its interpretation.FindingsThe study suggests implementing women-only formal mentorship programs with Kochan's (2013) cultural framework for an organizational culture change. The reason is that study provides some insights into the traditional values that underpin age and gender biases in the professional community of Kazakhstani academia. However, but the results differ for participants who are informally mentored by department chairs with modern values. The author acknowledges that the small sample limits the findings and it's interpretation. Hence more research in the interdisciplinary field of gender, education and workforce in the context is required.Originality/valueThe study presents new evidence to support existing Western research on factors influencing workplace relationships and mentorship for young female faculty members. This empirical research adds on findings to the existing data from the Central Asian context, particularly to the sector of women studies and organizational culture in higher education institutions.

What do they get out of it? Considering a partnership model in health service research.

A research study to evaluate the implementation of a long-term conditions model of care provoked questions regarding the potential impact of the researcher's role in health service research. Traditional methods of qualitative interviewing require researchers to be a disembodied presence, objective, and free from bias. When health service research is conducted by health professionals, role conflict may occur if the topic is one they have expertise in, and therefore the ability to provide guidance or information. An alternative perspective to the idea of an independent and objective researcher is the notion of a partnership. In this research collaboration, participants utilised the interview process to reflect and explore different perspectives, and the researcher bracketed their own participation in the phenomenon being studied. Reflexivity was utilised by both participants and the interviewer to ensure transparency and thus bridge the gap between subjectivity and objectivity in qualitative health service research interviewing.

Factors influencing the risk propensity of Malaysian project managers in the construction industry

Construction industries are confronting a wide variety of risks such as finances, designing which influence directly on overall performance and fulfilment of the desired goals. Thus, for project managers, risk management is considered as a proactive approach for effective risk minimisation and management as most of the Malaysian construction industries lack proper risk management practices. Furthermore, it is imperative to identify the factors that influence the risk propensity of Malaysian project managers in the construction industries. Therefore, the data collection is done from four renowned construction companies in Klang Valley, Malaysia. This study adopts the qualitative research strategy and interviews conducted with four project managers. The results highlight that individual factors (experience, leadership qualities, qualification, multitasking and risk management practices) and project factors such as (budget, scope, schedule, uniqueness, complexities) influence on risk propensity and risk management of Malaysian construction industry project managers. However, leadership qualities and experience contribute more towards risk propensity of Malaysian project managers in the construction industry. A model has been designed regarding factors influencing the risk propensity of project managers in the construction industry of Malaysia.

Psychological Antecedents to the Effects of Psychedelics on Workplace Productivity: Interview Evidence of a Naturalistic Setting

Consuming small amounts of psychedelics (“microdosing”) reportedly improves workplace productivity, but the mechanisms by which they enhance focus and creativity have not been thoroughly explored. This study follows previous qualitative research designs (Martin & Kjellgren 2019) and interviews 41 users who report microdosing LSD and Psilocybin for productivity at work. Users were recruited through the private-sector education company, The Third Wave. Respondents noted that LSD and Psilocybin helped them manage anxiety, burnout, and depression, but both substances helped in distinct ways. On average, respondents reported benefits of Psilocybin around relationships and collaboration, while the benefits of LSD were more often related to individualized focus and creativity.
