Harmonizing Tradition and Innovation: Exploring Cross-cultural Elements in Contemporary Chinese Piano Compositions

With the globalization of music education, the piano has emerged as a universally embraced instrument, serving as a conduit for cultural exchange. Chinese piano music, a fusion of traditional Chinese and Western cultures, occupies a crucial position in global music education. This study investigates the cultural significance, impact on cultural identity, cross-cultural elements, and pedagogical approaches associated with contemporary Chinese piano compositions. Through qualitative analysis of survey data collected from 30 music majors at Yunnan University of the Arts Wenhua College, several key findings emerged. Chinese piano music plays a vital role in representing contemporary Chinese culture on a global stage, harmonizing traditional elements with innovative approaches. Engagement with this genre positively influences cultural identity and pride among students, fostering a deeper connection to their heritage. The study identifies cross-cultural elements and innovative techniques in Chinese piano compositions, providing insights for educators and composers. Furthermore, it highlights the need for a more balanced representation of Chinese piano music in music education curricula, addressing gaps and biases in current pedagogical approaches. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary Chinese piano music's cultural significance and its implications for music education, cultural diplomacy, and compositional innovation.

Healthcare professionals’ attitudes towards the termination of pregnancy: a qualitative analysis of survey data in Northern Ireland

Abortion was decriminalised in Northern Ireland in October 2019. Following decriminalisation, the new regulations set out legal provision for abortion up until 12 weeks, with conditions thereafter. This cross-sectional descriptive survey, conducted in late 2019 in Northern Ireland, gathered the views of health professionals on decriminalisation, and their willingness to provide abortion services. This article provides a thematic analysis of answers to narrative questions from the online survey, and identifies priority areas of engagement with healthcare professionals. We assess how healthcare professional roles and responsibilities, abortion procedures, the foetus, and women and pregnant people were discursively constructed by respondents who are willing or unwilling to provide abortion services in Northern Ireland. We identify a narrow understanding of ‘harm’, and gendered norms of women as irresponsible or duplicitous, as inhibitory factors to the normalisation of abortion services in Northern Ireland.

Abstract The relationship between political ideology and public administration policy has been studied extensively in the past few decades. Research has indicated that political actors play a crucial role in shaping public administration policy as they are the ones who are elected to represent the interests of the voters. Public opinion also plays an important role in shaping policy as it is the voice of the people who elect government officials.
 The aim of this study is to explore the correlation between political ideology and public administration policy, the impact of political actors on public administration policy, the role of public opinion in shaping public administration policy, and the effects of policy implementation on political ideology.
 The methodology employed in this study involves qualitative analysis of survey data obtained from a wide range of sources such as books, journals, and various documents.
 The findings of this study suggest that political ideology is strongly correlated with public administration policy. The impact of political actors on public administration policy is significant, with those in power often shaping policy to fit their own political agendas. Public opinion has a significant impact on policy formation, with policymakers often looking to cater their policies to the needs and desires of the electorate. Policy implementation has also been found to have a significant impact on political ideology, with policies that are successfully implemented often creating an ideological landscape that is difficult to change.

2005 How do emergency ambulance clinicians decide what to do for older adults who have fallen? An analysis of qualitative survey data

Abstract Introduction Around 10% of calls received by English ambulance services are for older adults who have fallen1; with an ageing population there are significant care provision needs. Decision-making on the treatment for people who fall, can impact their future physical and mental health. Previous research in decision-making of ambulance staff found perception of role, confidence, service demands and training to be key drivers2. The previous work highlighting drivers, but not the experiences that explain why they occur, leads this study aim to determine the experiences and confidence of frontline emergency clinicians in attending older adults who have fallen. Method Online cross-sectional survey of frontline emergency clinicians from one English ambulance service in May 2023. Open questions generated qualitative data for thematic analysis3. Ethical and regulatory approvals, and informed consent, were obtained. Results: 81 participants completed the survey. Analysis identified three themes. Care Provision: Provision of hospital avoidance pathways varies throughout the region. Concerns arose from not knowing what different areas had and reduced accessibility out of hours. Communication: Decision-making confidence was impacted by the participants’ experiences; positive experiences encouraged use of hospital avoidance pathways, whilst negative experiences impeded willingness to avoid hospital for fear of repercussion. Shared Decision-Making: Patients, family and clinicians were all valued as part of shared decision-making, with past feedback on decision-making informing future practice. Conclusion Confidence of frontline ambulance staff was impacted by the challenge of a regional and 24/7 ambulance service not having consistent pathways available. This variation led to concerns when responding to patients outside of the clinician’s usual area, and further challenges ambulance clinicians must balance in their practice.

Linguistic domination or discrimination?

Abstract This article analyses some of the linguistic tensions derived from international academic mobility in English-medium instruction multilingual university contexts, focusing on local and international academic staff’s interests from a linguistic justice viewpoint. Firstly, we develop a normative argument to explore whether international academic mobility and increased use of English can become a source of linguistic domination for local staff, or if suggested countermeasures, such as requiring international scholars to learn the local language, might lead to linguistic discrimination against the latter group. Secondly, via a qualitative analysis of survey data, we ask local and international scholars at the University of Tartu about their views on the language policy regime at the university. Protective language policies that encourage locals to use Estonian more and require internationals to learn some Estonian could help enhance linguistic justice, according to local staff. However, international scholars may perceive such requests as discriminatory. Linguistic domination and discrimination play a key role in the clashing interests of stakeholders, creating tension. The study highlights the complexity of the dilemmas faced by many university officials today in their attempt to balance institutional goals with on-the-ground realities.

Storied reflections: Development of a longitudinal interdisciplinary curriculum to improve patient-provider communication.

This article details the development of an interdisciplinary graduate medical education (GME) narrative curriculum. Descriptive statistics were conducted for the narrative session surveys. Two separate qualitative analyses were conducted. First, content and thematic analyses of the open-ended questions in the survey using NVIVO software occurred. Second, an inductive analysis of the participants' 54 stories was performed to identify unique themes not related to the prompt topics. Quantitative survey results demonstrated that 84% of learners' felt the session benefited their personal or professional sense of wellbeing and resilience, 90% of learners believed the sessions aided in their ability to listen more effectively, and 86% of learners could apply what they practiced or witnessed. Qualitative analysis of survey data showed learners focused on patient care and listening. Thematic analysis of participants' narratives revealed strong feelings and emotions, struggles with time management, increase in self- and other-awareness, and challenges managing job-life balance. The longitudinal interdisciplinary Write-Read-Reflect narrative exchange curriculum is cost-effective, sustainable, and demonstrably valuable to learners and their program directors across multiple disciplines. The program was designed for 4 graduate programs' learners to simultaneously experience a narrative exchange model to improve patient-provider communication, support professional resilience, and deepen relationship-centered care skills.

Chilling Tales: Understanding the Impact of Copyright Takedowns on Transformative Content Creators

Though current conversations around automated content moderation often focus on newer contexts for this technology such as harassment or misinformation, one other important use case is copyright detection systems such as YouTube's Content ID. This context for content removals online has some unique properties such as its relationship to legal requirements (Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that governs copyright notice-and-takedown), and provides a longstanding example of the intersection between policy, online platform design, and algorithms. Based on qualitative analysis of survey data, this paper examines the impact of DMCA takedowns and automated copyright-related content removals on a community of content creators who primarily share transformative works, remixed content that makes use of copyrighted material. Our data reveals patterns of chilling effects related to prior experiences and perceptions of policies and process. Based on these findings we make recommendations for platform policy and design, education, and advocacy, and discuss the implications of our findings for current and proposed laws.

Contextualizing Everyday Data Literacies: The Case of Recreational Runners

Data literacy is typically described in a decontextualized manner, and many data literacy frameworks are detached from the “messy” realities of everyday life. In the present study, we selected a specific context (recreational running), specific data technology (self-tracking devices), and specific viewpoint (accuracy of data and analyses) to construct a substantial theory of (one form of) contextual data literacy. The research question is: How does recreational runners’ everyday data literacy appear in relation to the accuracy of measurements and analyses of self-tracking devices? Through an abductive analysis of qualitative survey data (N = 1057), we identified the data literacy actions that runners engaged with when assessing the accuracy of data in relation to their subjective needs, objectives, and life situations. The first-order data literacy actions (comparison and evaluation) captured how runners assessed and analyzed the accuracy of data, and they took place mainly in the immediate context of running. The second-order data literacy actions (acceptance, adaptation, and optimization) were the result of the runners’ reflections on what they sought from running and how they valued data, as well as their broader life situation.

The Reflective Essay in Social Research Methods Education: An Analysis of Student Assessment Experiences

Reflective essays have become common in higher education, especially for modules and programmes focused on the development of practical skills. This paper analyses the efficacy of reflective essays specifically for social research methods education and training. In order to do so, a thematic analysis of qualitative survey data from undergraduate students taking a compulsory second-year social research methods module was undertaken. Overall, I contend that while the process of reflecting itself has clear benefits, and students themselves generally perceive the act of reflecting as being personally beneficial, the requirement to write up into an essay for submission has more mixed results. Further, while previous studies have suggested that reflective essays are confidence-building exercises, this research suggests that while this was the case for some students who completed the assignment, others found the process more discouraging. The paper concludes by suggesting several potential improvements that could be made to reflective essays in order to mitigate these issues.

The experience of loneliness among international students participating in the BBC Loneliness Experiment: Thematic analysis of qualitative survey data

Loneliness is associated with poor mental and physical health in the general population. It is thought to be prevalent among international students, but few studies have investigated this. To capture what loneliness means in the everyday lives of international students we analysed data from 521 international students aged 16–40 years who participated online in the 2018 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Loneliness Experiment. Using the approach of thematic analysis of free‐text responses to a question probing the perceived meaning of loneliness, we identified six main themes: (1) Negative psychological and social aspects of loneliness; (2) The distressing experience of being alone; (3) Disrupted ability to make meaningful connections; (4) Sense of entrapment in a state of loneliness; (5) Awareness of others’ stigmatizing perceptions of oneself as lonely; (6) Perceptions of positive aspects of loneliness. These findings identified a range of negative social and psychological dimensions of loneliness in international students in relation to their well-being, emotional health, and social functioning, hampering the benefits to be gained from their overseas study. Higher education teaching staff, pastoral staff, and mental health professionals need to be more aware of the prevalence and impacts of loneliness and should tackle it in culturally appropriate ways.

Learner-generated podcasts: an authentic and enjoyable assessment for students working in pairs

Assessment and feedback are common sources of student dissatisfaction within higher education, and employers have shown dissatisfaction with graduates’ communication skills. Authentic assessment, containing ‘real-world’ context and student collaboration, provides a means to address both issues simultaneously. We discuss how we used authentic assessment within a biological sciences degree programme, replacing an individually written essay coursework assignment with learner-generated podcasts. We outline our implementation strategy in line with existing theory on learner-generated digital media, assessment for learning and self-regulated learning. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey data (2020 and 2021) indicate students prefer podcast assignments over traditional essay coursework, perceiving them to be more enjoyable, authentic, allowing for greater creativity, and better for building their confidence as communicators. Podcasting as an assessment may have a positive influence on knowledge retention and promote deep learning too. Our assessment design provides opportunities for community building, formative peer review and enhancing assessment literacy, while also being flexible enough to be used across any discipline of study and/or as an inter-disciplinary assessment.

Reducing global health inequalities for a rare disorder: evaluating the international Prader–Willi Syndrome Organisation’s Echo® programme

BackgroundPeople with rare disorders face significant global health inequalities; the challenge is how to raise awareness and develop a nucleus of experts in a country who are then able to provide guidance to others in that country. The International Prader–Willi Syndrome Organisation (IPWSO) established Project ECHO® with the aim of facilitating the sharing of knowledge and the building of international partnerships to reduce global health inequalities for a particular rare genetically-determined neurodevelopmental disorder, Prader–Willi Syndrome (PWS). Four different ECHO programmes were established for the following groups: (a) Individuals (usually parents) who had taken on a leadership role in their country; (b) health professionals interested in PWS; (c) professional care providers supporting children and adults with PWS; and (d) a Latin American ECHO in Spanish. The programme started in 2020 and an evaluation was undertaken after one year to determine: the extent to which IPWSO had been able to recruit and retain individuals globally; the nature and extent of any benefits gained from the sessions; and examples of how individual involvement in the programme had led to local benefits. The methods included analysing routinely kept process indicators and survey data from the attendees of one component of the programme (the Leadership ECHO), together with a qualitative analysis of survey data and recorded interviews of attendees from countries of differing socio-economic status.ResultsWe describe the IPWSO ECHO programme and report on the outcomes from the evaluation of one aspect of the programme, the Leadership ECHO. Attendance of the Leadership ECHO sessions was satisfactory, with a mean of 24.7 participants, with participants attending a mean of 5.67 sessions, i.e., 30% of sessions. There was also good global reach, with individuals attending from 34 countries, although there were notable geographic regions with very limited representation. Feedback and interviews demonstrated the positive impact of the programme with some early evidence of positive developments at national level.ConclusionsFamilies and professionals from countries with a range of expertise and services offered to people with PWS remained engaged throughout the ECHO programme, established networks of support and fostered the development of good practice.

"Constantly Working on My Attitude Towards Statistics!" Education Doctoral Students' Experiences with and Motivations for Learning Statistics.

Doctoral students in education-related fields are required to take graduate level statistics courses and often face anxiety and negative attitudes about taking these courses. Using a mixed methods survey research design (N = 95), this study explored students’ experiences with statistics anxiety and how course instructors can support them to mitigate statistics anxiety and improve attitudes. Analyses of quantitative survey data found that students who had never taken a statistics course before beginning their doctoral program, and students that had completed less doctoral coursework had higher negative attitudes towards learning statistics; and older students had higher statistics anxiety. Plans to use research in the future predicted more positive attitudes and lower statistics anxiety. Analysis of qualitative survey data found that students: (1) expressed that their attitude towards learning statistics was very important and played a big role in how they approached their coursework; (2) considered their plans to use research skills in the future as motivation to learn statistics; and (3) believed that their instructors’ attitudes and instructional practices supported learning and decreased statistics anxiety. This study has implications for how statistics and research methods courses are taught in higher education, and how the experiences of graduate students in education may have lasting implications for research use in Prek-12 education settings.

Learning to Teach Without Teaching: A Mixed Methods Case Study of Preservice Teachers’ Efficacy Beliefs and Perceptions of an Evidence-based Creative Arts Subject

Recognition of the inherent value of the Creative Arts in society seldom extends beyond rhetoric to meaningful action. The powerful ways the Creative Arts are positioned within curriculum documents, for example, stand in contrast to entrenched problems such as poor teacher attitudes, disengaging teaching practices and low status. Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs and preservice teachers are essential to the long-term improvement of Creative Arts education. Creative Arts in ITE is also an interesting context in which to examine the divide between Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK) and Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) that has influenced both educational research and policy. This paper reports on a mixed methods case study of 24 preservice teachers’ Creative Arts teaching efficacy beliefs and perceptions as they completed an evidence-based, discipline-focussed creative arts subject. The Likert scale efficacy data, collected via the CATEBI-B, modified from the established STEBI-B (Enochs & Riggs, 1990), were analysed via MANOVA with repeated measures and T-tests. These analyses were complemented by thematic analysis of qualitative survey data. Results showed statistically significant increases in participants' personal Creative Arts teaching efficacy upon completion of the subject. The significance of Creative Arts teaching outcome expectancy increases was questionable and the qualitative results were somewhat mixed despite being mostly positive. Implications of these findings and directions for further research in this space are discussed.

Anesthesia-related perioperative patient safety services in Indian public and private hospitals with or without teaching programs: A matched analysis of qualitative survey data

Introduction: The World Health Organization is emphasizing global patient safety for more than a decade. However, very less is known about the patient safety environment in the perioperative settings in developing countries. The present secondary analysis aimed to compare the anesthesia-related patient safety measures and services in Indian public versus private and teaching versus nonteaching hospitals.Materials and Methods: The present study is a post hoc, subgroup analysis of a previously conducted cross-sectional, questionnaire-based, online survey during February–May 2019. Responses from the postgraduate trainee and consultant/qualified practitioners were included. Data related to the practice pattern and availability of standard, advanced monitoring, and equipment were then categorized based on the hospital funding source and availability of teaching program; compared using the Fisher's exact test, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: Six hundred responses were included. The majority (60.7%) were from the private sector; 57.3% worked in teaching hospitals. Overall, anesthesia-related patient safety and equipment were deficient across the entire range of hospitals. However, there was no difference between matched public and private hospitals (P > 0.05 for most), except the anonymous incident reporting, which was significantly higher in the corporate teaching hospitals (P < 0.0001). Teaching hospitals had significantly better safety measures (P < 0.0001 for most parameters) than nonteaching hospitals.Conclusion: Public sector hospitals in India are not having significantly different anesthesia services related to patient safety monitoring and equipment than private sector hospitals. However, the safety measures are relatively low in many aspects across all sectors, which need attention.The following core competencies are addressed in this article: Patient care, Systems-based practice.

The Attitude of the Lithuanian Translation Market Participants towards Machine Translation and Post-editing

The article presents the results of the research project funded by the Research Council of Lithuania, the aim of which was to find out the attitude of Lithuanian translation market participants – companies and freelance translators – towards machine translation and post-editing. Currently, there is no objective information on the application of machine translation in companies providing translation services in Lithuania or the attitude of translators to machine translated texts and the challenges posed by post-editing as a service. There is also no information on the competences that need to be developed by translators and translation students so that they can adapt to this new reality and work successfully on the market. To reach this aim, two questionnaires were prepared: one for translation companies providing translation services (n1=42) and the other for translators (n2=61), and two surveys were carried out. A qualitative analysis of survey data confirmed that among market participants there is a strong belief that as machine translation programs progress, the importance of competences ensuring quality post-editing will grow rapidly. Among the most important competences for post-editing, both groups of respondents singled out knowledge of text linguistics, native and foreign language proficiency, and knowledge of the field of translation. However, the surveys have also revealed that at least one third of market participants have a negative view toward machine translation and see it as a threat to the quality of translation (agencies) and/or their jobs (translators). It is expected that the conducted research will contribute to the promotion of a more favourable attitude of translators to machine translation technologies and will encourage further research in post-editing in Lithuania.

The impact of the first COVID-19 lockdown in the UK for doctoral and early career researchers

Doctoral researchers and early career researchers (ECRs) are crucial to producing scientific advancements and represent the future of academic leadership. Their research endeavours were changed radically by lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to explore the perceived benefits and challenges of the national lockdown in the UK from the perspective of doctoral researchers and ECRs. We present analysis of qualitative survey data from 1,142 doctoral researchers and ECRs on their experiences of the first UK lockdown collected from April 16, 2020–May 14, 2020. Our findings suggest considerable heterogeneity in how the pandemic impacted this key group of academic workers. Challenges arising from the lockdown largely cohered around a poor work environment, limited access to resources, perceptions of pressure, and negative psychological outcomes. Conversely, respondents also highlighted several benefits in the early stages of the pandemic, with the change to working from home creating more time, resulting in greater productivity and a better work-life balance. Collectively, findings indicate the importance of considering the personal circumstances and needs of individual researchers. We discuss the implications for support these researchers require to rebuild their careers in the wake of the initial disruption.

675 The childbirth experience survey (CBEX): an analysis of qualitative survey data

In collaboration with community research partners, a national cross-sectional online Childbirth Experience Survey of pregnant and postpartum birthing people (CBEX) was conducted in 2016. The antepartum-postpartum survey includes items across 19 domains (including patient expectations, preferences and outcomes), and identified 23 childbirth-specific postpartum patient-reported outcomes (PROs) that were predictors of hospital satisfaction. It is currently being offered in 12 California hospitals to identify hospital-specific opportunities for improvement in care. We analyzed postpartum qualitative survey responses to validate the CBEX domains and to assess for any potential new domains. This was an exploratory analysis of qualitative survey data. Using Atlas.ti, we mapped participant responses to the 19 domains and 23 key childbirth-specific PROs. A total of 547 postpartum surveys were completed between October 30, 2018 and September 7, 2020. Of the completed surveys, 175 patients responded to the question, “Is there anything else you would like to share about your birth experience?” Patients could provide multiple comments. A total of 235 comments were analyzed and mapped to the 19 domains (Table 1). Qualitative responses highlighted issues in several subdomains: 1) interventions in labor: pressure from the care team to be induced comparable to pressure about cesareans; 2) pain management: issues related to epidural effectiveness, timing, dosage and education; 3) empathy and respect: issues related to students and residents; and 4) newborn feeding: rough physical handling of patients by nurses, specifically during lactation consults. Postpartum patient comments were entirely mapped to existing CBEX domains, confirming its content validity. These nuances emphasize the importance of patient input into research development and suggest the need for further refinement of topics to be explored and developed into standardized items. The potential for expanding CBEX subdomains and developing additional standardized items will be explored with community research partners.

Blood Work: Managing Menstruation, Menopause and Gynaecological Health Conditions in the Workplace.

The menstrual cycle remains neglected in explorations of public health, and entirely remiss in occupational health literature, despite being a problematic source of gendered inequalities at work. This paper proposes the new concept of blood work to explain the relationship between menstruation (and associated gynaecological health conditions) and employment for women and trans/non-binary people. We build on and extend health and organisational literature on managing bodies at work by arguing that those who experience menstruation face additional work or labour in the management of their own bodies through the menstrual cycle. We discuss how this additional labour replicates problematic elements that are identifiable in public health initiatives, in that it is individualised, requiring individual women and trans/non-binary people to navigate unsupportive workplaces. We present findings from an analysis of qualitative survey data that were completed by 627 participants working in higher education, revealing that employees’ blood work comprises distinct difficulties that are related to the management of painful, leaking bodies, access to facilities, stigma, and balancing workload. We suggest developing supportive workplaces and public health policies, which refocus the responsibility for accessible, equal workplaces that accommodate menstruating employees, and those with gynaecological health conditions.
